Steve Webb (00:00):
We show that our
hearts are sincere. It's history
Tuesday. and we'll read SecondChronicles six through 10.
Thanks for inviting me in.Before we read, let's pray. Our
gracious heavenly Father, how wethank You for Your Word. and we
pray, Lord, that as we readtoday, you would bless us, teach
us touch our hearts. I pray thisin Jesus name, Amen. All right,
(00:24):
let's begin.
Second Chronicles chapter six. Then Solomon said, Yahweh has
said that he would dwell in thethick darkness, but I have built
you a house and home a place foryou to dwell in forever. The
king turned his face and blessedall the assembly of Israel, and
(00:44):
all the assembly of Israelstood. He said, bless it be your
way, the God of Israel who spokewith his mouth to David my
father, and has with his handsfulfilled it saying, since the
day that I brought my people outof the land of Egypt, I chose no
city out of all the tribes ofIsrael to build a house in that
my name might be there. and Ichose no man to be Prince over
(01:07):
my people Israel. But now I havechosen Jerusalem that my name
might be there. and I havechosen David to be over my
people Israel. Now it was in theheart of David my father to
build a house for the name ofYahweh, the God of Israel. But
he always said to David, myfather, whereas it was in your
heart to build a house for myname, you did well that it was
(01:28):
in your heart. Nevertheless, youshall not build the house, but
your son who will come out ofyour body, he shall build the
house for my name. Yahweh hasperformed his word that he spoke
for I have risen up in the placeof David, my father, and I sit
on the throne of Israel as y'allway promised, and have built the
house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. There I have
(01:50):
set the ark in which is youalways covenant which he made
with the children of Israel. Hestood before Yahweh his altar in
the presence of all the assemblyof Israel and spread out his
hands, for Solomon had made abronze scaffold, five cubits
long and five cubits wide inthree cubits high, and had set
it in the middle of the court.and he stood on it, and knelt
(02:11):
down on his knees before all theassembly of Israel and spread
out his hands toward heaven. andhe said, Yahweh, the God of
Israel, there is no God like youin heaven or on earth. You who
keep covenant and lovingkindness with your servants who
walked before you, with alltheir heart, who have kept with
your servant, David, my father, that which you promised him
(02:33):
that, yes, you spoke with yourmouth, and have fulfilled it
with your hand as it is today. Now therefore, Yahweh, the God
of Israel, keep with yourservant, David, my father, that
which you have promised himsaying, There shall not fail you
a man in my sight to sit on thethrone of Israel, if only your
children take heed to their wayto walk in my law, as you have
(02:54):
walked before me. Now thereforeyour way the God of Israel, let
your word be verified which youspoke to your servant David. But
Will God indeed dwell with menon the earth? Behold, heaven in
the heaven of heavens can'tcontain you how much less this
house which I have built, yethave respect for the prayer of
(03:14):
Your servant and to hissupplication, Yahweh, my God, to
listen to the cry into theprayer which your servant prays
before you, that your eyes maybe open toward this house, day
and night, even toward the placewhere you have said that you
would put your name to listen tothe prayer which your servant
will pray toward this place.Listen to the petitions of Your
(03:35):
servant, and of your peopleIsrael when they pray toward
this place. Yes, hear from yourdwelling place, even from
heaven. and when you hear, forgive, if a man sins against
his neighbor, and an oath islaid on him to cause him to
swear, and he comes in swearsbefore your altar in this house,
then hear from heaven, act andjudge your servants bringing
(03:57):
retribution to the wicked tobring his way on his own head,
and justifying the righteous togive him according to his
righteousness. If your peopleIsrael are struck down before
the enemy, because they havesinned against you, and they
turn again and confess yourname, and pray and make
supplication before you in thishouse, then hear from heaven and
(04:18):
forgive the sin of your peopleIsrael, and bring them again to
the land which you gave to themand to their fathers, when the
sky is shut up, and there is norain because they have sinned
against you. If they pray towardthis place, and confess your
name, and turn from their sinwhen you afflict them, than here
in heaven and forgive the sin ofYour Servants of your people
(04:38):
Israel, when you teach them thegood way in which they should
walk and send rain on your landwhich You have given to your
people for an inheritance. Ifthere was famine in the land, if
there is pestilence if there wasblight or mildew, locust or
Caterpillar, if their enemiesbesieged them in the land of
their cities, whatever plague orwhatever sickness there is
(05:00):
whatever prayer and supplicationis made by any man, or by all
your people, Israel, who willeach know his own plague and his
own sorrow, and shall spread outhis hands toward this house,
then hear from heaven yourdwelling place, and forgive and
render to every man according toall his ways, whose heart you
know, for you. Even you onlyknow the hearts of the children
(05:22):
of men, and that they may fearyou to walk in your ways, so
long as they live in the landwhich you gave to our fathers.
Moreover, concerning theforeigner, who is not of your
people, Israel when he comesfrom a far country, for your
great namesake, and your mightyhand, and your outstretched arm,
when they come and pray towardthis house, then hear from
(05:43):
heaven, even from your dwellingplace, and do according to all
that the foreigner calls to youfor that all the peoples of the
earth may know your name andfear you, as do your people
Israel, and that they may knowthat this house which I have
built is called by your name. Ifyour people go out to battle
against their enemies, bywhatever way you send them, and
(06:05):
they pray to you toward the citywhich you have chosen, and the
house which I have built foryour name, then hear from
heaven, their prayer and theirsupplication and maintain their
cause. If they sinned againstyou, for there is no man who
doesn't sin, and you are angrywith them and deliver them to
the enemy, so that they carrythem away captive to a land far
(06:25):
off or near. Yet if they come totheir senses in the land where
they are carried captive, inturn again, and make
supplication to you in the landof their captivity, saying, We
have sinned, we have doneperversely, and have dealt
wickedly, if they returned toyou with all their heart and
with all their soul in the landof their captivity, where they
have carried them captive, andprey toward their land which you
(06:48):
gave to their fathers and thecity which you have chosen and
toward the house which I havebuilt for your name. Then hear
from heaven, even from yourdwelling, place their prayer and
their petitions and maintaintheir cause and forgive your
people who have sinned againstyou. Now, my God, let I beg you
your eyes, be open, and let yourears be attentive to the prayer
(07:10):
that is made in this place. Nowtherefore arise Yahweh God into
your resting place you in theark of your strength. Let your
priests your way God be clothedwith salvation, and let your
saints rejoice in goodness,Yahweh God, don't turn away the
face of your anointed. Rememberyour loving kindness to David
(07:31):
Your servant,
Second Chronicles chapter seven. Now, when Solomon had finished
praying, fire came down fromheaven and consumed the bird
offering in the sacrifices andyour ways glory filled the
house. The priests could notenter into your ways house
because you always glory filledyou always house. All the
(07:53):
children of Israel looked onwhen the fire came down, and you
always glory was on the house. They bowed themselves with their
faces to the ground on thepavement, worshipped and gave
Thanks to Yahweh saying, For Heis good, for his loving kindness
endures forever. Then the kingand all the people offered
(08:13):
sacrifices before Yawei KingSolomon offered a sacrifice of
22,000 head of cattle and120,000 sheep. So the king and
all the people dedicated God'shouse. The priests stood
according to their positions, the Levites also with
instruments of music of Yahweh, which David the king had made to
(08:34):
give Thanks to Yawei when Davidpraised by their ministry
saying, for his loving kindnessendures forever. The priests
sounded trumpets before them andall Israel stood. Moreover,
Solomon made the middle of thecourt that was before you always
house holy, for there he offeredthe burnt offerings and the fact
of the peace offerings, becausethe bronze altar which Solomon
(08:58):
had made was not able to receivethe bird offering the meal
offering and the fat. So Solomonheld the feast at that time for
seven days, and all Israel withhim a very great assembly from
the entrance of Hey Math, to thebrook of Egypt. On the eighth
day, they held a solemnassembly, for they kept the
dedication of the altar sevendays and the feast seven days.
(09:22):
On the 23rd day of the seventhmonth, he sent the people away
to their tents, joyful and gladof heart for the goodness that
Yahweh had shown to David and toSolomon and to Israel, his
people. Thus, Solomon finishedyour ways house in the king's
house. and he successfullycompleted all that came into
Solomon's heart to make in yourways house and in his own house.
(09:46):
Yahweh appeared to Solomon bynight and said to him, I have
heard your prayer and I havechosen this place for myself for
a house of sacrifice. If I shutup the sky so that there is no
rain, or if I command the lookIs to devour the land, or if I
send pestilence among my people,If my people who are called by
(10:06):
my name will humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from
their wicked ways, then I willhear from heaven will forgive
their sin and will heal theirland. Now my eyes will be open
my ears attentive to prayer thatis made in this place. For now I
have chosen and made this householy, that my name may be there
(10:28):
forever, and my eyes and myheart will be there perpetually.
As for you, if you will walkbefore me is David your father
walked and do according to allthat I have commanded you, and
will keep my statutes and myordinances, then I will
establish the throne of yourkingdom. According as I
covenanted with David yourfather, saying, There shall not
(10:50):
fail you a man to be ruler inIsrael. But if you turn away and
forsake my statutes, and mycommandments, which I have set
before you, and shall go andserve other gods and worship
them, then I will pluck them upby the roots out of my land
which I have given them in thishouse which I have made holy for
my name, I will cast out of mysight, and I will make it a
(11:12):
proverb and a byword among allpeoples. This house, which is so
high, everyone who passes by itwill be astonished and say, Why
has Yawei done this to this landinto this house? They shall
answer because they abandonedYahweh, the God of their fathers
who brought them out of the landof Egypt, and took other Gods
(11:32):
worship them and serve them. Therefore, he has brought all
this evil on them.
Second Chronicles chapter eight. It took 20 years for the Lord's
temple and Solomon's Palace tobe built. After that Solomon had
his workers rebuild the townsthat Hiram had given him then
Solomon said Israelites to livein those towns, Solomon attacked
(11:55):
and captured the town ofWeymouth soba. He ordered his
workers to build the town ofTadmor in the desert and some
towns in Hayworth where he couldkeep his supplies. He
strengthened upper Beth Horon inlower Beth Horon by adding walls
and gates that could be locked. He did the same thing to the
town of Bailiff and to thecities where he kept supplies,
(12:15):
chariots and horses. Solomonordered his workers to build
whatever he wanted in Jerusalem,Lebanon, and anywhere else in
his kingdom. Solomon did notforce the Israelites to do his
work. Instead, they were hissoldiers, officers, army
commanders, and cavalry troops. But he did make slaves of the
Hittites, Amorites, parasitesHivites and Jebusites, who were
(12:39):
living in Israel. These were thedescendants of those foreigners.
The Israelites did not destroy, and they remained Israel slaves.
Solomon appointed 250 officersto be in charge of his workers.
Solomon's wife, the daughter ofthe king of Egypt, moved from
the part of Jerusalem calledDavid city to her new palace
(13:00):
that Solomon had built. Thesacred chest had been kept in
David's city, which made hispalace sacred. and so Solomon's
wife could no longer live there.Solomon offered sacrifices to
the Lord on the altar he hadbuilt in front of the temple
porch. He followed therequirements that Moses had
given for sacrifices offered onthe Sabbath. On the first day of
(13:20):
each month, the festival of thinbread, the harvest festival, and
the festival of shelters.Solomon then assigned the
priests and the Levites theirduties at the temple, and he
followed the instructions thathis father the man of God had
given him. Some of the Leviteswere to lead music and to help
the priests in their duties, andothers were to guard the temple
(13:42):
gates and the storage rooms. Thepriests and the Levites follow
these instructions exactly.Everything Solomon had planned
to do was now finished from thelaying of the temples foundation
to its completion. Solomon wentto easy and Gerber and eLife to
eat in my towns on the Red Sea.Hiram sent him ships and some of
(14:02):
his experienced sailors. Theywent with Solomon zone sailors
to the country of ofor andbrought back more than 15 tons
of gold for Solomon.
Second Chronicles chapter nine. The Queen of Sheba heard how
famous Solomon was, so she wentto Jerusalem to test him with
difficult questions. She tookalong several of her officials,
(14:23):
and she loaded her camels withgifts of spices, jewels and
gold. When she arrived, she andSolomon talked about everything
she could think of. and heanswered every question no
matter how difficult it was. Thequeen was amazed at Solomon's
wisdom. She was breathless whenshe saw his palace, the food on
his table, his officials, allhis servants and their uniforms,
(14:46):
and the sacrifices he offered atthe Lord's temple. She said,
Solomon in my own country, I'veheard about your wisdom and all
you've done, but I didn'tbelieve it until I saw it with
my own eyes. and there's so muchI didn't hear about You are
greater than I was told yourpeople and your officials are
lucky to be here where they canlisten to the wise things you
(15:09):
say, I praise the Lord your God.He is pleased with you and is
made you king of Israel. Godloves the people of this country
and will never desert them. Sohe has given them a king who
will rule fairly and honestly, the Queen of Sheba gave Solomon
more than four tons of gold, alarge amount of jewels, and the
best spices anyone had everseen. In return, Solomon gave
(15:32):
her everything she wanted evenmore than she had given him.
Then she and her officials wentback to their own country. Hiram
rooms and Solomon's sailorsbrought gold, Juniper wood and
jewels from the country of OferSolomon use the wood to make
steps for the temple and palaceand harps and other stringed
instruments for the musicians.Nothing like these had ever been
(15:55):
made in Judah. Solomon receivedalmost 23 tonnes of gold each
year not counting with amerchants and traders brought
him in the kings of Arabia andthe leaders of Israel also gave
him gold and silver. Solomonmade 200 Gold shields that
weighed over three kilogramseach. He also made 300 smaller
gold shields that weighed almosttwo kilograms. and he put these
(16:17):
shields in his palace in forestHall. His throne was made of
ivory and covered with puregold. It had a gold footstool
attached to it in armrests oneach side, there was a statue of
a lion on each side of thethrone, and there were to lion
statues on each of the six stepsleading up to the throne. No
other throne in the world waslike Solomon's. Solomon's cups
(16:40):
and dishes and forest Hall weremade of pure gold because silver
was almost worthless in thosedays. Solomon had a lot of
seagoing ships. Every threeyears he sent them out with
Hiram chips to bring back gold, silver and ivory, as well as
monkeys and peacocks. Solomonwas the richest and wisest king
in the world. Year after year, other kings came to hear the
(17:02):
wisdom God had given him andthey brought gifts of silver and
gold as well as clothes, weapons, spices, horses and
mules. Solomon had 4000 stallsfor his horses and chariots, and
he owned 12,000 horses that hekept in Jerusalem and other
towns. He ruled all the nationsfrom the Euphrates River in the
north to the land of Philistiain the South, as far as the
(17:25):
border of Egypt. While Solomonwas King, there was silver
everywhere in Jerusalem, andcedar was as common as the
sycamore trees in the westernfoothills. Solomon's horses were
brought in from other countries, including Meuse, dry everything
else Solomon did while he wasking is written in the records
of Nathan the prophet, a hydrathe prophet from Shiloh and Edo,
(17:48):
the prophet who wrote aboutJeroboam, son of knee bat. After
Solomon had ruled 40 years fromJerusalem. He died and was
buried in the city of his fatherDavid, his son Rehoboam, then
became king.
Second Chronicles chapter 10.Rehoboam went to Shechem for all
Israel had gone there to makehim king. When Jeroboam son of
(18:09):
knee bat heard this, he was inEgypt, where he had fled from
King Solomon, he returned fromEgypt. So they sent for Jeroboam
and he and all Israel went toRehoboam and said to him, your
father put a heavy yoke on us,but now lighten the harsh labor
and the heavy yoke you put onus, and we will serve you
Rehoboam answered, come back tome in three days, so the people
(18:30):
went away. Then King Rehoboamconsulted the elders who had
served his father Solomon duringhis lifetime. How would you
advise me to answer thesepeople? He asked? They replied,
If you will be kind to thesepeople and please them and give
them a favorable answer. Theywill always be your servants.
But Rio Boehm rejected theadvice the elders gave him and
(18:51):
consulted the young men who hadgrown up with him, and we're
serving him. He asked them, Whatis your advice? How should we
answer these people who say tome, lighten the yoke your father
put on us, the young men who hadgrown up with him replied, The
people have said to you, yourfather put a heavy yoke on us,
but make our yoke lighter. Nowtell them my little finger is
(19:12):
thicker than my father's waist. My father laid on you a heavy
yoke. I will make it evenheavier. My father's scourge
deal with whips. I will scourgeyou with scorpions. Three days
later, Jeroboam and all thepeople returned to Rio bone, as
the king had said, Come back tome in three days. The king
answered them harshly, rejectingthe advice of the elders. He
(19:35):
followed the advice of the youngmen and said, My father made
your yoke heavy, I will make iteven heavier. My father's
scourge deal with whips, I willscourge you with scorpions. So
the king did not listen to thepeople for this turn of events
was from God to fulfill the wordthe Lord had spoken to Jeroboam,
son of knee bat through a hijab, the Shiloh night, when all
(19:56):
Israel saw that the King refusedto listen to them. They asked
The king what share do we havein David? What pardon Jesse,
son, to your tents Israel, lookafter your own house, David, so
all the Israelites went home. But as for the Israelites who
were living in the towns ofJudah Rehoboam still ruled over
them, and King Rehoboam set outat an IRA who was in charge of
(20:18):
forced labor, but the Israelitesstoned him to death. King
Rehoboam however, managed to getinto his chariot and escaped to
Jerusalem. So Israel has been inrebellion against the house of
David to this day.
Well, beloved, let's talk aboutchapters six and seven. In
chapter six, we see that thetemple that King David first
(20:40):
thought to build but which Godsaid he could not build because
he had been a man of war, hisson Solomon has now completed as
had been promised by God. andthere's a great time of
sacrificing and dedicationlasting for seven days. Can you
imagine what a great time thiswas, how joyous the people must
have been. and Solomon offered agreat prayer of dedication in
(21:02):
chapter six in which he askedthe Lord that if the people ever
stray from God and suffer theconsequences brought upon them
by God as judgment, if they thenrededicate themselves to him,
that he would forgive them. andin chapter seven, God appeared
to Solomon in the night andresponded to his prayer. and
remember, this was the secondtime that God appeared to him.
(21:23):
The first time, of course, waswhen God asked Solomon what he
wanted in Solomon asked forwisdom, discernment and
understanding. In here in thissecond appearance, God said, I
have heard your prayer and havechosen this place for myself as
a temple for sacrifices when Ishut up the heavens, so that
there is no rain, or Commandlocusts to devour the land or
(21:44):
ascend to plague upon my people,If my people who are called by
my name, will humble themselvesand pray and seek my face, and
turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven,
and I will forgive their sin andwill heal their land. Now my
eyes will be open and my earsattentive to the prayers offered
(22:05):
in this place. I've chosen andconsecrated this temple, so that
my name may be there forever, myeyes and my heart will always be
there. So as you know, you'veyou've heard me claim this
promise If My people who arecalled by my name, etc. Some
might say God made this promiseto Solomon at this time, about
(22:28):
the people of Israel, it doesn'tapply to anybody else. well,
let's look back at Solomon'sprayer of dedication in chapter
six, verses 32 and 33. He said, into future foreigners who do
not belong to your people,Israel will hear of you. They
will come from distant lands, when they hear of your great
(22:48):
name, and your strong hand andyour powerful arm. and when they
pray toward this temple, thenhear from heaven where you live
in grant what they ask of you.In this way, all the people of
the earth will come to know andfear you, just as your own
people Israel do. They too willknow that this temple I have
(23:09):
built honors your name, Beloved,we are the foreigners Solomon
was talking about that is if youare not a Jew, if you're a Jew,
then that applies, obviously. But for those of us that aren't
Jews, for those of us that areGentiles, we are the foreigners
that Solomon was talking about.and in God's response to
(23:31):
Solomon's prayer, God began withthese words, I have heard your
prayer. So God will honor Hispromise to heal the land of
people who humble themselves. Iknow I've talked about this
promise time and time again onthe show, but I believe it's
important to emphasize it. Weknow from Scripture that David
and others repeated God'spromises many, many times right.
(23:54):
God's promises must be repeatedfor our benefit. and though God
does not need to be reminded, henever seems to mind when we do
remind him. I think that byrepeating his promises to him,
we show that our hearts aresincere. Yes, God's promise is
for us. and when Jesus wascrucified, and the curtain in
(24:16):
the temple was torn from top tobottom, God sent the message
that we do not need the templeto be in the place where God
hears our prayers or wheresacrifices are made. Jesus is
our high priest, and he was thefinal lasting sacrifice.
Beloved, if we humbly confessour sins, and if we turn to Him,
(24:38):
He will heal our land. We havehis promise on that. What are
your thoughts? I'd sure like tono contact information is at the
