Transcript Today's Bible Translation Bible translation used in today's episode: Ch. 5-6 NET; Ch. 7 NLT Associate Producer Sister Ann Podcast Introduction It’s Epistles Sunday, and we’ll Epistles Sunday, and we’ll read Hebrews 5-7. We’ll also have a time of prayer. I’m calling this episode “Phinehas’ Righteous Anger.“ Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Bommie on pixabay.com Summary Hebrews 7 discusses Melchizedek, a mysterious figure without a recorded genealogy. The author highlights that Melchizedek's name, meaning "king of righteousness" and "king of peace," foreshadows Jesus and his titles. The author also emphasizes that Melchizedek's priesthood is perpetual and superior to the Levitical priesthood, which is significant for the Jewish audience as it demonstrates that Jesus' priesthood surpasses the old covenant. The importance lies in the fact that the old Law could not bring about perfection or righteousness before God. Only the new covenant with Jesus as the Great High Priest can accomplish that. A priest acts as an intermediary between humans and God, and Jesus, having lived a sinless life, qualifies as the representative who brings our case to God. Through Jesus, believers can approach God and have a standing before Him. Listen to the episode for more! Support This a value for value podcast. I'm your OG Godcaster. Steve Webb, it's epistle Sunday and we'll read Hebrews five through seven. We'll also have a time of prayer. The website is Lifespringmedia.com. and contact information will be at the end of today's show. Before we read, let's pray. Our Heavenly Father, we love you and we thank You for Your Word. and we ask you to bless our time of reading today. We pray this in Jesus name, Amen. All right here ready? Let's get going. Steve Webb 0:37Hebrews chapter five. For every high priest is taken from among the people and appointed to represent them before God to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins, he is able to deal compassionately with those who are ignorant and daring, since he also was subjected to weakness. and for this reason, he is obligated to make sin offerings for himself, as well as for the people. and no one assumes this on or on his own initiative, but only when called to it by God as in fact, Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself and becoming High Priest. But the one who glorified him was God who said to him, You are my son, today I have fathered you. and also in another place, God says, You are a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. During his earthly life, Christ offered both requests and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death. and he was heard because of his devotion. Although he was a Son, He learned obedience through the things he suffered. and by being perfected in this way, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, and He was designated by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek. On this topic, we have much to say and it is difficult to explain since you have become sluggish and learning for though you should in fact, be teachers. By this time. You need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God's utterances, you have gone back to needing milk, not solid food,

getting the book of Deuteronomy, which is the last book of the
law or Pentateuch. The closer weget to the end of the season,

(00:43):
these "lasts" will accelerate. No need to panic though. After
today, there will still be 91episodes remaining. The website
is lifespringmedia.com and I'llhave contact information at the
end of the show. Before we read, let's pray. Lord, I pray that
you would bless our timetogether as we read. Show us how
we can apply what we read to ourlives today. In Jesus' name.

(01:04):
Amen. Are you ready? Let'sbegin.
Acts, chapter 1. DearTheophilus: In my first book I
wrote about all the things thatJesus did and taught from the
time he began his work until theday he was taken up to heaven.
Before he was taken up, he gaveinstructions by the power of the

(01:24):
Holy Spirit to the men he hadchosen as his apostles. For
forty days after his death heappeared to them many times in
ways that proved beyond doubtthat he was alive. They saw him,
and he talked with them aboutthe Kingdom of God. And when
they came together, he gave themthis order: “Do not leave
Jerusalem, but wait for the giftI told you about, the gift my

(01:46):
Father promised. John baptizedwith water, but in a few days
you will be baptized with theHoly Spirit.” When the apostles
met together with Jesus, theyasked him, “Lord, will you at
this time give the Kingdom backto Israel?” Jesus said to them,
“The times and occasions are setby my Father's own authority,
and it is not for you to knowwhen they will be. But when the

(02:09):
Holy Spirit comes upon you, youwill be filled with power, and
you will be witnesses for me inJerusalem, in all of Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of theearth.” After saying this, he
was taken up to heaven as theywatched him, and a cloud hid him
from their sight. They still hadtheir eyes fixed on the sky as
he went away, when two mendressed in white suddenly stood

(02:30):
beside them and said,“Galileans, why are you standing
there looking up at the sky? This Jesus, who was taken from
you into heaven, will come backin the same way that you saw him
go to heaven.” Then the apostleswent back to Jerusalem from the
Mount of Olives, which is abouthalf a mile away from the city.
They entered the city and wentup to the room where they were

staying (02:51):
Peter, John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas,
Bartholomew and Matthew, Jamesson of Alphaeus, Simon the
Patriot, and Judas son of James. They gathered frequently to pray
as a group, together with thewomen and with Mary the mother
of Jesus and with his brothers.A few days later there was a
meeting of the believers, abouta hundred and twenty in all, and

(03:13):
Peter stood up to speak. “Myfriends,” he said, “the
scripture had to come true inwhich the Holy Spirit, speaking
through David, made a predictionabout Judas, who was the guide
for those who arrested Jesus.Judas was a member of our group,
for he had been chosen to have apart in our work.” (With the
money that Judas got for hisevil act he bought a field,
where he fell to his death; heburst open and all his insides

(03:37):
spilled out. All the people inJerusalem heard about it, and so
in their own language they callthat field Akeldama, which means
“Field of Blood.”) “For it iswritten in the book of Psalms,
‘May his house become empty; mayno one live in it.’ It is also
written, ‘May someone else takehis place of service.’ “So then,
someone must join us as awitness to the resurrection of

(03:59):
the Lord Jesus. He must be oneof the men who were in our group
during the whole time that theLord Jesus traveled about with
us, beginning from the time Johnpreached his message of baptism
until the day Jesus was taken upfrom us to heaven.” So they

proposed two men (04:13):
Joseph, who was called Barsabbas (also known
as Justus), and Matthias. Thenthey prayed, “Lord, you know the
thoughts of everyone, so show uswhich of these two you have
chosen to serve as an apostle inthe place of Judas, who left to
go to the place where hebelongs.” Then they drew lots to
choose between the two men, andthe one chosen was Matthias, who

(04:36):
was added to the group of elevenapostles.
Acts, chapter 2. The day ofPentecost came. The believers
all gathered in one place.Suddenly a sound came from
heaven. It was like a strongwind blowing. It filled the
whole house where they weresitting. They saw something that
looked like tongues of fire. Theflames separated and settled on

(04:58):
each of them. All of them werefilled with the Holy Spirit.
They began to speak in languagesthey had not known before. The
Spirit gave them the ability todo this. Godly Jews from every
country in the world werestaying in Jerusalem. A crowd
came together when they heardthe sound. They were bewildered
because they each heard thebelievers speaking in their own

(05:20):
language. The crowd was reallyamazed. They asked, "Aren't all
these people from Galilee? Why,then, do we each hear them
speaking in our own nativelanguage? We are Parthians,
Medes and Elamites. We live inMesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia. We are from Pontus,Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia.
Others of us are from Egypt andthe parts of Libya near Cyrene.

(05:43):
Still others are visitors fromRome. Some of the visitors are
Jews. Others have accepted theJewish faith. Also, Cretans and
Arabs are here. We hear allthese people speaking about
God's wonders in our ownlanguages!" They were amazed and
bewildered. They asked oneanother, "What does this mean?"
But some people in the crowdmade fun of the believers.

(06:04):
"They've had too much wine!"they said. Then Peter stood up
with the Eleven. In a loud voicehe spoke to the crowd. "My
Jewish friends," he said, "letme explain this to you. All of
you who live in Jerusalem, listen carefully to what I say.
You think these people aredrunk. But they aren't. It's
only nine o'clock in themorning! No, here is what the

(06:27):
prophet Joel meant. He said,"'In the last days, God says, I
will pour out my Holy Spirit onall people. Your sons and
daughters will prophesy. Youryoung men will see visions. Your
old men will have dreams. Inthose days I will pour out my
Spirit even on those who serveme, both men and women. When I

(06:47):
do, they will prophesy. I willshow wonders in the heavens
above. I will show miraculoussigns on the earth below. There
will be blood and fire andclouds of smoke. The sun will
become dark. The moon will turnred like blood. This will happen
before the coming of the greatand glorious day of the Lord.
Everyone who calls on the nameof the Lord will be saved.' "Men

(07:11):
of Israel, listen to this! Jesusof Nazareth was a man who had
God's approval. God didmiracles, wonders and signs
among you through Jesus. Youyourselves know this. Long ago
God planned that Jesus would behanded over to you. With the
help of evil people, you putJesus to death. You nailed him

(07:32):
to the cross. But God raised himfrom the dead. He set him free
from the suffering of death. Itwasn't possible for death to
keep its hold on Jesus. Davidspoke about him. He said, "'I
know that the Lord is alwayswith me. He is at my right hand.
I will always be secure. So myheart is glad. Joy is on my

(07:53):
tongue. My body also will befull of hope. You will not leave
me in the grave. You will notlet your Holy One rot away. You
always show me the path thatleads to life. You will fill me
with joy when I am with you.'"Brothers, you can be sure that
King David died. He was buried. His tomb is still here today.

(08:13):
But David was a prophet. He knewthat God had made a promise to
him. He had taken an oath thatsomeone in David's family line
would be king after him. Davidsaw what was ahead. So he spoke
about the Christ rising from thedead. He said that the Christ
would not be left in the grave. His body wouldn't rot in the
ground. God has raised this sameJesus back to life. We are all

(08:38):
witnesses of this. Jesus hasbeen given a place of honor at
the right hand of God. He hasreceived the Holy Spirit from
the Father. This is what God hadpromised. It is Jesus who has
poured out what you now see andhear. David did not go up to
heaven. But he said, "'The Lordsaid to my Lord, "Sit at my
right hand. I will put yourenemies under your control."'

(09:01):
"So be sure of this, all youpeople of Israel. You nailed
Jesus to the cross. But God hasmade him both Lord and Christ."
When the people heard this, their hearts were filled with
shame. They said to Peter andthe other apostles, "Brothers,
what should we do?" Peterreplied, "All of you must turn
away from your sins and bebaptized in the name of Jesus

(09:23):
Christ. Then your sins will beforgiven. You will receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit. Thepromise is for you and your
children. It is also for all whoare far away. It is for all whom
the Lord our God will choose."Peter said many other things to
warn them. He begged them, "Saveyourselves from these evil
people." Those who accepted hismessage were baptized. About

(09:46):
3,000 people joined thebelievers that day. The
believers studied what theapostles taught. They shared
life together. They broke breadand ate together. And they
prayed. Everyone felt that Godwas near. The apostles did many
wonders and miraculous signs. All the believers were together.
They shared everything they had. They sold what they owned. They

(10:09):
gave each other everything theyneeded. Every day they met
together in the templecourtyard. In their homes they
broke bread and ate together.Their hearts were glad and
honest and true. They praisedGod. They were respected by all
the people. Every day the Lordadded to their group those who
were being saved.

(10:29):
Well, Beloved, the Acts of theApostles, which is the full name
of the book of Acts was writtenby Luke. At one time, the Gospel
of Luke and Acts were consideredone book of two volumes with
Acts being the second volume.Acts is a sort of bridge between
the four Gospels and theEpistles. Without Acts, there
would be no record of howChristianity spread from

(10:50):
Jerusalem, which is where theGospel of John ended, to Rome,
which is where the book ofRomans takes place. The book of
Acts is about the dawning daysof the Christian church, how it
began. It's about theempowerment of the seemingly
defeated followers of Jesusafter his crucifixion and
resurrection. You see, Jesusknew that his disciples would

(11:10):
need encouragement and courageand ability from God to be able
to take the message of thegospel to the world. So just
before he ascended to heaven, hetold them to stay in Jerusalem
until they received the HolySpirit. Now put yourself in
their place. Yes, they had seenand spoken with the resurrected
Christ over a period of fortydays before his ascension, but

(11:32):
they had no knowledge of theHoly Spirit. What was Jesus
talking about? How would thishappen? And how would they know?
They gathered in an upper roomof a house in Jerusalem and
spent their time praying. Theremaining eleven disciples,
Jesus' mother, some other womenand Jesus' brothers were there
and they waited - for what?Well, when the Holy Spirit

(11:54):
arrived, there was no doubt thathis presence was a game changer.
When the day of Pentecostarrived, which was fifty days
after the Passover, he came intothe upper room accompanied by
the sound of a strong wind. Notethat the text doesn't say it was
a wind, it was the sound of astrong wind. And then there were

(12:16):
what looked like tongues offire, which came and rested on
each one of the people. And theywere all filled with the Holy
Spirit. And they began to speakin tongues which they had never
spoken before, enabled by theHoly Spirit. All of this noise
drew a crowd, some thought thatthe speakers were drunk, but it
was early in the day. Of thosethat heard, many were from other

(12:37):
lands who were not Jews, andthey heard what the believers
were saying in their ownlanguages. And then Peter stood
up and told those in attendanceof the words of the prophet
Joel. And he preached his firstsermon to them, telling them all
about Jesus. And three thousandnew believers were added to the
church that day. What abeginning! What a miraculous

(12:59):
event! When the Holy Spiritworks through his people, Jesus
Christ is glorified and livesare changed. Now listen, every
believer is meant to have thisexperience of power from the
Holy Spirit. The Greek word forthis power is "dunamis" which is
the root of the English word"dynamite," "dynamic," "dynamo."
Every believer is called toshare the Good News of the risen

(13:22):
Christ. And whether or not youbelieve in the Pentecostal
experience, God calls each of usto be a light to the world with
Jesus' message of hope andsalvation. That is your call and
mine. Jesus said, "You willreceive power ("dunamis") when
the Holy Spirit has come uponyou, and you shall be my
witnesses, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria,

(13:45):
and even to the remotest part ofthe earth." So, Beloved,
