Transcript Today's Bible Translation Bible translation used in today's episode: Ch. 117-118 NLV Associate Producer Chase Jacobson Podcast Introduction This is Psalms Wednesday. We’ll read chapters 117-118. We’ll also have a prayer segment, but no Essentials today. I’m recording this on the evening of July 4th and most of our house guests are still here. I think the final total was 20 people. So I had to make my exit and come into the studio here at ls central to do this episode for you. But alas, there is no time to get an essentials segment into the show today. I hope that’s ok with you.  I’m calling this episode “The Revolutionary Psalm that Defied Jewish Tradition.“ Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Luis Quintero on pexels.com Summary Psalm 117 reveals four important points, and Martin Luther wrote a 36 page commentary on just this one Psalm! It prophesies the inclusion of Gentiles in God's redemption plan, emphasizes the heavenly and eternal nature of the Messiah's kingdom, instructs that salvation is by grace alone, and admonishes us to praise the Lord. Just a reminder that the Psalmsfrom 113 to 118 make up what is

Psalms chapter 117. Praise theLord, all nations praise Him all
people, for his loving kindnesstoward us his great and the

(01:48):
truth of the Lord lasts forever.Praise the Lord.
There is no attribution as towho the author is of Psalm 118.
But King David is generallyaccepted as the writer, but
thinking of Jesus singing thispsalm after his last Passover
meal, and just before he wasbetrayed, one could also say
that this is the Messiah song ofthis psalm G. Campbell, Morgan

the ideal servant, ie theperfect priest, ie the leader of
the people, how much all thesewords meant to him, as he sang
them on that night in the upperroom.
Psalms chapter 118. Give thanksto the Lord, for He is good. His

(02:35):
loving kindness lasts forever.Let Israel say his loving
kindness lasts forever. Let thehouse of Aaron say his loving
kindness lasts forever. Letthose who fear the Lord say his
loving kindness lasts forever. Icried to the Lord in my trouble.
and He answered me and put me ina good place. The Lord is with

(02:57):
me, I will not be afraid of whatman can do to me. The Lord is
with me. He is my helper, and Iwill watch those loose who fight
against me. It is better totrust in the LORD than to trust
in man. It is better to trust inthe LORD than to trust in
rulers. All nations gatheredaround me, but I cut them off in
the name of the Lord. Theygathered around me, yes, they

(03:20):
were on every side, but I cutthem off in the name of the
Lord. They were all around melike bees, and they died out
fast, like burning thorns, Iwill destroy them in the name of
the Lord. You push me back sothat I was falling, but the Lord
helped me. The Lord is mystrength and my song. He is the
one who saves me the joy ofbeing saved as being heard in

(03:44):
the tents of those who are rightin good. The right hand of the
Lord does powerful things. TheLord's right hand is lifted
high, the right hand of the Lorddoes powerful things. I will not
die, but live. and I will tellyou what the Lord has done. The
Lord has punished me, but he hasnot given me over to death,
opened me to the gates of whatis right and good. I will go

(04:07):
through them and give thanks tothe Lord. This is the gate of
the Lord. Those who are rightwith God will pass through it. I
will give thanks to you for youhave answered me, and you are
the one who saves me. The stonethat was put aside by the
workmen has become the mostimportant stone in the building.
The Lord has done this. We thinkit is great. This is the day

(04:29):
that the Lord has made. Let usbe full of joy and to be glad in
it. Oh Lord, we beg you to saveus. Oh Lord, we ask that you let
everything go well for us. Greatand honored is he who comes in
the name of the Lord. We honoryou from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is good. He has givenus light. Tie the gift with rope

(04:50):
to the horns of the altar onthis special day. You are my God
and I will give you thanks. Youare my God and I will praise
you. Give thanks to the Lord forHe is good. His loving kindness
lasts forever.
I've got some comments on Psalm117. I told you that Martin

(05:10):
Luther wrote about fourdifferent aspects of the psalm
even though it was so short, hewrote 36 pages about it. Here
are the four aspects that MartinLuther addressed. Number one,
prophecy, the Psalm tells usthat the Gentiles will be
included in God's plan ofredemption. Number two,
Revelation. The psalm told usthat the Messiah is Kingdom is

(05:32):
heavenly and eternal, notearthly. and also there was some
instruction in the song thattells us that we were saved by
grace alone, not by works, holiness or wisdom. and the
fourth thing was, there was anadmonition in the song. Because
of these things, we shouldpraise the Lord. Now, not only
is chapter 117, the shortestchapter in the Bible, it's also

(05:55):
smack dab in the center. andwhat's really amazing about this
psalm is this, the writer wrotesomething that could not have
been accepted by the Jews. Why?Well, because it says, Praise
the Lord, all nations, praisehim, all people. You see, unless
you were circumcised to the Jew,you could not join in praising

(06:15):
the Lord, when this Psalm waswritten in this chapter at the
very heart of the Bible, revealed the heart of God. This
was a peek at the gospelmessage. Paul, in the book of
Romans, chapter 15, even usedthis short chapter as a proof to
the Jews, that God's love wasfor the Gentiles as much as it

(06:36):
was for the Jews. That is,indeed good news. But the
message of Psalm 117 does notend there. It says, For His
loving kindness toward us isgreat. I like the way the King
James says it For his mercifulkindness is great toward us.
Beloved, we should praise himbecause his merciful loving

(06:57):
kindness is great toward us. Dowe deserve it? No, but his
merciful kindness is greattoward us. That's the truth. and
the truth of the Lord lastsforever. It will never change.
It will never waver, he won'tchange his mind, Forever is a
long, long time. and then thepsalm ends with the only

(07:17):
response we should have to thislife changing truth. Praise the
Lord. Praise the Lord. Hedeserves our praise, ye who
created all that is he who holdsyour life and mine in his strong
right hand loves you, and Heloves me. and that will never
change. Praise the Lord. Praisethe Lord indeed. What are your
