Thorvald Steen har skrivit över 40 verk och förutom romaner är det dramatik, essäer, noveller, barnböcker och poesi. Känd också för sitt engagemang för yttrandefrihet och mänskliga rättigheter. Genomgående i Thorvald Steens författarskap är undersökandet av hur kroppen påverkar vårt fysiska och själsliga liv. Tydligast kanske i böckerna om hans muskelsjukdom, Det sista fotografiet, Det vita kallbadhuset, Snökristallernas tyngd, Det längsta hoppet och Balans men i lika hög grad gäller det hans historiska romaner.
