According to reports on Thursday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers released veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney after one season with his hometown team. This release was part of several post-draft cuts made by the team, but it was undoubtedly the most notable, as the Panthers signed Clowney to a two-year, $20 million deal just a year ago. Did this decision come as a surprise? Following the Panthers' selection of two pass rushers on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft, GM Dan Morgan was noncommittal about Clowney's future when asked how the draft picks impacted Clowney and other reports suggesting the Panthers were shopping the former number one overall pick.
Clowney's departure opens up significant cap space for the Panthers. Will Carolina now use this space to sign a veteran free safety? The move away from Clowney continues a trend of Carolina opting for younger players over the past two offseasons. How does the Panthers' edge rusher group shape up without the veteran?
There was other big news on Thursday, as the Panthers placed RB Jonathon Brooks on the PUP list after suffering an ACL tear in Week 14. Brooks, drafted in the second round in 2024 by Carolina despite tearing his ACL the previous fall, will now be unavailable for the 2025 season. What does this mean for his future in Carolina? Julian Council shared his thoughts on both breaking news stories and how they'll affect the Panthers in 2025.
