Boken skildrar den hemliga kärleksaffären mellen greven och drottningen men även 1700-talets politiska omvälvande rörelser i Europa, åren mellan 1770 och 1810. Med ny teknik har forskare lyckats dechiffrera det Axel von Fersen ville hålla hemligt i deras brevväxling, bland annat intima detaljer om sin relation till drottning Marie-Antoinette.
