Een vrachtschip volgeladen met buskruit ontplofte op 12 januari 1807 in het centrum van Leiden. De binnenstad lag in puin en overal woedden branden. Ongeveer 160 mensen kwamen om het leven en circa 2000 raakten gewond. In de nieuwste aflevering van MakersRadio reconstrueren we deze ramp aan de hand van ruim 200 jaar oude bronnen. Je hoort verhalen van mensen die de Leidse buskruitramp van zeer dichtbij hebben meegemaakt en actief handelden. Wat te doen als de paniek toeslaat en normale wetten en regels niet meer gelden. Maar ondanks paniek en chaos verlopen rampen vaak volgens een vaste structuur. De Leidse buskruitramp is in veel opzichten een blauwdruk geweest voor latere rampen.
