Als Ebeltje tien jaar oud is, blijft hij per ongeluk haken aan een opstijgende luchtballon. Hij houdt zich stevig vast aan het ankertouw en wordt honderden meters meegesleurd voor hij eindelijk weer vaste grond onder de voeten krijgt. Het lijkt een wonder dat de jongen weer heelhuids terugkeert, maar misschien is het een kwestie van pure overlevingskracht, want ook later zal hij in levensbedreigende situaties terechtkomen waar hij zich telkens weer uit weet te redden. Maar een overlever is nog geen held. Dat wordt duidelijk als niet hij, maar zijn kinderen in gevaar komen en de volwassen Ebel nergens te bekennen blijkt te zijn.
