In het jaar 1911 verbleef hoogleraar C.C. Uhlenbeck drie maanden onder de Blackfeet indianen bij Montana. Terwijl hij de taal van de Zwartvoetindianen bestudeerde, hield zijn vrouw Willy een gedetailleerd dagboek bij van hun belevenissen op de prairie. Onderzoeker Mary Molenaar ontdekte het dagboek bijna honderd jaar later in het archief van een Canadees museum en wist dat ze op een goudmijn was gestuit. Via het verslag van Willy Uhlenbeck zien we het veranderende culturele en economische leven van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Amerika. Maar het dagboek laat vooral op pijnlijke wijze zien hoe wij westerlingen tegen andere culturen aankijken.
