Wetenschapstalent 2019 Special
Deze week zijn er vijf speciale kortere afleveringen van Makkelijk Praten. Iedere dag spreken we één van de vijf finalisten van New Scientist Wetenschapstalent 2019. Vandaag Jonas Lembrechts Bioloog bij de Universiteit Antwerpen over de verspreiding van plantensoorten:
Het valt misschien niet op terwijl je door de natuur wandelt, maar ook planten zijn aan de wandel. Het veranderende klimaat dwingt veel soorten om op reis te gaan naar gebieden waar ze beter kunnen gedijen. Helaas is zo’n reis niet altijd succesvol. Mensen verbouwen en bebouwen steeds meer land. De natuur kan klimaatverandering op zich best aan, maar in combinatie met de druk van veranderend landgebruik gaat die weerstand snel achteruit. Dat is waar het onderzoek van Jonas Lembrechts om draait. Hij brengt de verspreiding van soorten in kaart en achterhaalt welke rol klimaatverandering en menselijk landgebruik hierin spelen. Met die informatie kunnen we de natuur helpen zich aan te passen. Zo hoopt Lembrechts zijn steentje bij te dragen in de strijd tegen afnemende biodiversiteit.
