Wetenschapstalent 2019 Special
Deze week zijn er vijf speciale kortere afleveringen van Makkelijk Praten. Iedere dag spreken we één van de vijf finalisten van New Scientist Wetenschapstalent 2019. Vandaag Matthieu de Schipper, Kustwaterbouwkundige bij de TU Delft over Zand- en waterbewegingen bij kustonderhoud:
Als surfer houdt Matthieu de Schipper van golven, maar als wetenschapper ook. In het klein is het gedrag van water en zand lastig te bestuderen, dus raast De Schipper gewapend met een jetski vol meetapparatuur langs de kust. Of hij gebruikt kleurstoffen om de stroming van water en menging met zand inzichtelijk te maken. Het is buitenspelen met een hoger doel. Door klimaatverandering is het risico dat kustgebieden in gevaar komen steeds groter. De Schipper laat zien dat we proactief moeten ingrijpen in kwetsbare gebieden, niet pas als de schade al is geleden. Zo kan het verbreden van een klein stukje kust een groot gebied beschermen, voor langere tijd. Met zijn inzichten in de krachten van golven, stromingen en zand draagt De Schipper bij aan dit soort oplossingen.
