Kunst geeft ons de mogelijkheid terug in de tijd te kijken - schilderijen worden niet voor niets ‘ramen naar het verleden’ genoemd. Maar wetenschappelijk gezien kijken we eigenlijk altijd naar het verleden. Licht heeft immers een klein ogenblikje nodig om je ogen te bereiken.
Dit licht heeft echter ook een schadelijke impact: door de continue blootstelling aan UV-straling, kan verf in schilderijen verkleuren, waardoor een paars object in een schilderij ineens blauw kan zijn geworden.
Mimi den Uyl, analytisch chemicus, promoveert aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam in het verval van materialen onder de invloed van licht. Zo analyseert ze hoe licht verf beïnvloedt. En dat helpt je dan weer anders te kijken naar de schilderijen van Van Gogh, die overigens helemaal niet zo groen was als we denken.
Het was van Gogh zelf die al zei: “Kleur drukt uit zichzelf iets uit, dat kan men niet missen, daar moet men gebruik van maken. Vooral als je analytisch chemicus bent.” Als is het niet zeker of die laatste zin ook van hem kwam. Desalniettemin is het hoog tijd deze ramen naar het verleden te voorzien van een UV-werende coating, zoals ze in sommige musea al hebben.
Overigens hebben we het niet alleen over schilderijen, maar ook over hoe bijvoorbeeld voedselverpakkingen worden beïnvloed door licht.
