The 1973 novel tells the tale of two girls who grow up to become women. Two friends who become something worse than enemies. There are a few themes that the book covers that are still relevant today such as race, sexuality, community identity and motherhood.  Malia breaks down how prevalent the white community has on the black community even though there's not one white character in the book. Chris tackles the topic of friendship as it relates to the two main characters.
