Viaja a una velocidad sorprendente: aproximadamente 7 centímetros al año, una cifra que, aunque pueda parecer insignificante, supera con creces el promedio de movimiento de las demás masas continentales, que se sitúa en torno a los 1,5 centímetros anuales. Para hacernos una idea, esta deriva australiana es similar a la velocidad a la que crecen nuestras uñas y nuestro cabello.
