show notes. Here's our story
when you find the necklace byAndrew Hughes

(03:48):
Susan stares at Liz across thelocker room bench, visually
tracing her figure from theground up are petite feet with
her painted toes, dots of red toadorn flawless nails, or smooth
legs that lead up to firm curvesthat make Susan's assets look
quaint. All the way to her long, slender neck. The part of her

(04:10):
that looks almost naked. Even onMars. She'd still managed to
maintain a tan. Except for thethin pale line. Like what you
see. Liz asks flashing a tongueout wink. Oh no, Susan says
slipping out of her civilianattire.
I just noticed you're notwearing your necklace.
How was a long stare to get tomy neck. I guess I forgot it at

(04:33):
home
smooth. She's so smooth.
I'm surprised you notice myjewelry at all with that shiny
thing on your hand
loses eyes point to Susan'sengagement ring. It's a simple
silver circuit adorned with ahexagon li cut Blue Sapphire.
Yeah, the usually shimmeringstone seems dull tonight, even
in the intrusive fluorescentlighting of the locker room. Liz

(04:55):
lips into the bulky whitespacesuit and yanks up the
zipper. Somehow even this fallUnless attire complements her
figure
Hurry up. We're already late.
Yeah, sorry Susan steps into theone piece and pulls it up to her
neck where it seems to chokeher. She pulls the hood over her
bald scalp and sinks the zippertight. By the time she's
finished, Liz is alreadystanding at the door. Susan

(05:18):
starts with things in her lockerhats her pocket to assure its
contents, then shuffles acrossthe room to catch up. They walk
almost in tandem down thecorridor. With Liz just a few
steps ahead. She reaches thedoor to the break room first and
holds it open. Susanacknowledges the gesture with a
nod and a thanks even though sheknows the game. It's a subtle

(05:41):
attempt to avoid being the faceof disappointment. As she passes
through the entryway CaptainMira Mota scowling face is the
first thing she sees behind her.The rest of the night staff is
already seated
Nice of you to join usBlackheart
She says her voice carries abite. But by the time Liz
follows in behind her captainMara Modus is already looking

(06:01):
back at the diagram on theboard. Susan inlays take a seat
in the back row.
As I was saying, another daywith no sightings. According to
day shift, not a single roach. That doesn't change the
procedure. Got it. Stay smart, stay vigilant and stay dark. She

(06:22):
turns to face them cordovanJacobs you have interior 12 A
marks and pits interior 12 B.Cooper is the torah interior. 12
see Blackheart and Christian, you two will be doing exterior
room.
Susan says nothing. It's exactlyas she predicted. Suddenly,

(06:44):
she's very aware of herself ofher place in the room of her
body and the choking suit of thecontents of her pocket.
All right, folks, get to thearmory and get to work.
The other members of the 12division stand with a rustling
murmur. It's their first nightback after a week of sunlight.

(07:06):
So there's the standard catchingup the swapping of fresh stories
and replaying of inside jokes.Susan feels exterior to at all
she cannot focus on the socialroutine going on around her.
I'm going to say something. Thisis three shifts in a row. No,
don't. Let's give her a cockeyedglance.
You know, if you don't fight forwhat you want, people are gonna

(07:28):
keep walking all over you.
Susan has no response as shewatches Liz crossed the break
room. She feels an anger burn inher chest. Excuse me, Liz says
falling to attention Captain mirMotus.
What is it Christian?
Well, ma'am, this is Blackheartand I's third consecutive shift
on exterior duty. I was thinkingit might be better if we got a

(07:49):
little more variety. If we're toexcel at the survey duty, we're
going to need to experience theother parts of the job more
frequently. I'm sure the otherswould also benefit from seeing
the exterior more often
kept in mirror Motus does notlook up from the chart on her
desk.
If you want preferential shifts. You need to show up at a
preferential time get your gearand get outside.

(08:11):
There's a pause and Susan feelsa sickly as she watches Liz's
face searching for a response. There are some things that even
she can't manipulate. Yes,Captain. Liz says she taps her
heels together and turns away asshe does her face flushes with
anger. Susan has to bury hercontentment deep within herself.

(08:31):
They exit the break room andmake their way to the armory and
pull to flash suppressed riflesfrom hold this Liz says resting
hers into Susan's arms. Shecrosses the room and scrolls her
name and the sign out roster. Asshe does. Susan presses her
fingers hard into thesuppression block in the barrel,
shifting the mechanism withinthe bore. Can you believe her?
Liz stomps back and snatches herweapon. What a bitch.

(08:54):
We've been with the 12 thelongest show about a
preferential time. How about youeat my ass preferentially Susan
trucks?
I guess she doesn't like us.
They make their way out of thearmory and walk towards the
lift. As they do. Susan feelsthat atoms in our pocket bounce
against her head.
I don't give a damn if shedoesn't like us. We shouldn't be
taking the most dangerous jobevery night. It's bullshit. It's

(09:17):
not like we're getting any extrapay.
They reach the elevator and Lizpresses the code. The machine
words and the doors wide openwith a hiss. They both pull the
face shields of their suits downand step inside. There's a soft
whoosh from within each suit asthe oxygenated pores fill in.
Susan clutches her rifle tightand takes her first sipping
breath of fabricated air.Everything is working. The

(09:40):
elevator door slides shut andthe animatronic voice crackles
from the speaker above.
Thank you for your service tothe outpost. As you descend,
please check all
I'm just saying it'd be nice toget some fucking respect for
once. We're busting our ass outhere to create a future for the
species. We shouldn't besubjugated for little mishaps

(10:02):
here and there.
No, we shouldn't.
Susan says as she stares out theporthole window at the black
vastness of space. Liz shakesher head. Whatever,
I'm over it.
The elevator slows and theanimatronic message comes on
again, you know, let's turn thistoward her.
I'm just glad I've got you as mypartner.

(10:23):
Me too.
All systems are functioning. Acomplete seal is necessary for
survival. Additionally, pleaseremove all sources of light and
engage X ray capacity.
The message ends in the elevatorhisses. As the doors slide open,

(10:44):
Susan feels the antigravitymeasures in her suit and gauge.
The first step out feels likewalking in Waterlogue boots. The
elevator door shut and the liftdescends faster than I had
calmed down as if it was fleeingthe surface. For a moment, there
is only blackness. But then theX ray mask engages and Susan
sees the world through a film ofvibrant neon green. They're

(11:08):
standing outside the outpost ontheir left the wall that
surrounds it stretches up almostout of sight to the right as a
plane of craters and valleysbackdropped by the black sky.
Above there is nothing for themask to illuminate. They begin
to walk along the exterior.
So we go up with Jeff, how wasit? Nothing exciting. I spent

(11:33):
most of it working at the commstation. Every cent counts right
now.
Liz sighs and kicks a small rockspiral slowly up into the
blackness
of all the places to find a goodman. Can't believe you wrangled
one here.
Yeah,
he's good, isn't it? They walk awhile in silence. There is
nothing out there but the walland the void. Occasionally, they

(11:56):
stopped to survey the landscape. As Captain Miyamoto said, It is
quiet now. The roaches? Thecarnivorous insectoids that have
plagued them when they firstarrived had gone into
hibernation. Now they'reharmless, as long as they don't
sense light.
So have you guys talked aboutwhen you'll have the ceremony?
No. We don't want to get aheadof ourselves.

(12:19):
Make sense? You never know whatcan happen out here. Maybe I'll
meet a Jeff one day.
Maybe? Susan says she feels herheart pulsing faster. She turns
towards the void. Hey,
what is that? what's what? Outthere?
She points to the rim of one ofthe craters. Oh my god.

(12:42):
I don't see anything. If that'swhat I think
it is. Susan begins to walk herrifle carried down by her side.
Liz follows behind her What?
What do you think it is?
Oh my God. It is.
Susan walks faster. Theantigravity controls in her suit
struggling to keep up so everyfourth stride is a long bounding
leap. Susan, come on. Liz callsafter her.

(13:04):
She didn't go that far
out. No, I'm serious.
Susan reaches the edge of thecrater sticks her hand in her
pocket and lets the thing fall. She emits a little laugh. You
gotta check this out. She waitsfacing the crater as Liz catches
up. The second seem to elongateand slither as she's surrounded
by blackness. When Liz finallyarrives, Susan points down to

(13:25):
the crater. It's a steep bowlnearly two storeys deep. Do you
see it? Liz leans forward, squinting Wait, is that she
starts to pull away but Susanshoves her in the back with a
button her rifle. For a briefmoment Liz dangles in space, her
tan face a palette shock ghostof itself, before the
antigravity controls kick in andpull her lurching down into the

(13:46):
depths of the crater. Shestrikes hard and lets out an
accurate tree. Find it. Susanasks as she dips her hand back
into her pocket, her fingersfind the cylinder and she pulls
it out. She looked like a tinygreen blip in the crater glass
candy at the bottom of the bowl,a last piece that she would

(14:09):
surely eat. Even if Susan wasstarving. Her left leg is
twisted and human angle. Herfingers are curled around the
silver chain and the X rayvision. It's only a line of
slightly more vibrant neon. Youknow what this is? Susan says
she clicks on the flashlight andtosses it over the rim. The beam
spirals downward and Liz screamsas the ground around her

(14:29):
ripples. Before the flashlightconstruct the rocks a knife like
appendage as long as her armbreaks through the rest of the
ropes comes behind until itsmonstrous body towers above her.
Susan watches as Liz pulls upher rifle but there's no burst
of sound only an audible clickTry holding your own gear Susan
calls out was screams as thenext Roach breaks through then

(14:53):
another and another. Theirventures click because they
slice their cycle. First frenzyhis left arm fried with a gut
wrenching tear. As the stumpsfloat through the air, the board
hangs behind like a spray ofneon paint. With oxygen crushes
her lungs, Susan waits at thetop of the crater and watches as

(15:15):
the roaches disassemble her withvoracious precision. By the time
they finished and returned tothe ground, all that is left is
neon streaks of blood and Liz'snecklace. The necklace that Liz
his mother had given her beforethey left Earth the necklace
that she would never forget athome. The necklace that Susan
had found after a night workingat the comm station temporarily

(15:38):
last under the bed that she andJeff shared
