(00:00):
Mike Dell's world for November 3rd, 2023.
And today,
I know some of you have been here withme a long time and probably know all of
this, but some of you might benew because of Na Pod, Pomo 23.
So I, I kinda wanted to gothrough my podcast history.
(00:20):
You know, I started podcasting.I near, as I could tell,
April of 20 0 5 2,
2005 . I guess, uh,
that date is a little bit fluidbecause I can't find my first
so many episodes.
So if anybody out therehas OID report number one,
(00:43):
that's, uh, that, that'sthe one I'm looking for. I
don't have it. I think mine,
what I do have starts at aboutepisode 30. So I started out,
I lived in a little town called LakeAnn, Michigan, that's about, uh,
20 miles west of where I'm athere in Traverse City, Michigan.
Now I'm on the east side of Traverse City,
(01:05):
and Lake Ann is on thewest side and 15 miles out.
But I digress. And, uh,
lake Ann is in what's knownas Benzene County, Michigan.
That's the smallest county inMichigan by population and by
land area. So it's a prettysparsely populated out in the woods.
(01:27):
And so my podcast,
this one started out as theOID report 'cause the, uh,
county people tend tocall themselves benzo.
I did not know that It wasalso a class of drugs .
So funny thing there. But, uh,
about episode 50 ish,
(01:48):
I decided to change it to MikeDell's world. It's really,
this podcast has always beenabout nothing in particular,
just what's going on in my world. So why not Mike Dell's world?
I talk a lot about Michigan. I talkabout cars, I talk about airplanes.
I talk about whatever strikesmy fancy from time to time.
(02:09):
So it's really a show about nothingwhich I like. You know, it's, it's,
it's therapy. You know, I have otherpodcasts that I do that are, uh,
more professional, like apodcast insider that I do for my,
uh, employer, a blueberry podcasting.
And that one I do weekly.
(02:29):
This one I do very weekly ,
but I figured for Nepo Pomo, we'll,uh, we'll kick out a few episodes, uh,
30 hopefully is the goal. But, uh, yeah,
I started way, started out way back when,
and that was when you had to sorthand roll the RSS feed. You, uh,
(02:50):
had to find a place to put the,uh, the audio files, MP threes.
And, and that's always beenthe case. MP threes. Now you.
Can do M four a's and allthat stuff. But anyway,
it was one of the, uh, first100 podcasters or thereabouts.
And the first podcastconference I went to in 2006
(03:13):
in Ontario, California, the Portable media Expo,
it was like an old family reunion.'cause all the podcasters were there,
all of them. Everybody knew everybody.Uh, everybody listened to everybody. It,
it was a whole different vibe than, than now, you know. Now there's between,
you know, depending on who you listen to,
(03:33):
there's between two and 5million podcasts out there now.
There's really probably 200to 300,000 active podcasts,
this being one of them.Periodically . But, uh, yeah,
I, I worked, you know, I workedon the show. I, I did, you know,
I never was really consistent, and I only have 390 episodes,
(03:57):
but I did have some phonein episodes. There was a, a,
an outfit called Garage Band at,at the time where you could, uh,
just dial up a phone number, talk into the phone and hang up,
and it would pu publish anepisode. I use that for a while,
and those aren't numbered. So there'sprobably more out there than just the, uh,
390 that I claim. But,
(04:21):
so I, I did that fora while. And then, uh,
I moved to a company called Pod Show.
Pod Show was a company byAdam Curry and Ron Bloom.
Uh, their, their whole thing was Quityour day job. You know, at the time,
I had a day job and, you know,
they were gonna bring money intopodcasting and let you quit your day job.
(04:44):
And that worked for a few years. Uh,
but free hosting is a bad businessmodel. And all, all along this time,
I, I, I knew the people that thatstarted Raw Voice Incorporated.
Raw Voice is the parent companyof Blueberry podcasting, now,
my employer. But, uh, that firstconference, I met those guys and,
(05:06):
uh, you know,
we're hanging around them a bit everytime we'd go to conferences and whatnot.
And, and so in 2009,
I, uh,
switched my hosting from whatwas called MEO at the time. Uh,
'cause pod show had turned into meoand then MEO tried to compete with, uh,
(05:26):
YouTube, and now they nolonger exist, but around 2000,
I think probably 2008 actually,
I moved to Blueberry hosting andwas a customer at Blueberry for
a little while.
And then I got hired onPart-time as a contractor
doing tech support. And, you know,
(05:47):
I would just do email tech supportwhen I had time. And the job I had,
I would push a button and then wait anhour for something to happen and then
push another button. And.
So I could do that at my dayjob. And, uh, still, you know,
keep up with support.
And did that for quite a while, goingto conferences and, and whatnot.
(06:09):
And I always had this show, and I'vehad, I tried a lot of different shows.
You know, I'm the king of, uh, podFade. Uh, we did What's Up With That,
with Jim Farley. Did, uh, uh,
aviation History Today, uh,which was a daily for a while.
Then we did aviation Historythis week because Daily was hard,
(06:31):
. And then alsodid, uh, strange Today,
which was a history, uh,with Strange News, uh,
on that day. Did that for awhile. It was a daily, uh,
did the Traverse City Weather Brief,
which was a daily weather report that, uh,
(06:51):
I did that for quite a while. It was, that was actually pretty easy. It was a,
a rip and read about two minutespublish done. And I had that on the, uh,
Amazon Talking Tubes and the, uh,
Google talking speakers and neverdid get it on the Apple one.
'cause Apple's not that popularin that genre. Anyway, uh,
(07:12):
what other ones I've, I've, I've trieda lot. I had Geek of the North. I had,
uh, oh, golly, uh,
fast food history. I see a theme here. I,
I go at things for a while, then Stop 'em.
So this one's been the one that'sbeen carrying me through, uh,
that can say that I'm a podcaster andof course, podcast Insider as well.
(07:36):
And, uh, between those two shows,uh, I still am a podcaster,
although infrequently onthis one sometimes. And I
always have ideas of, uh, oh,
I wanna do a podcast about that.
And then I remember how much isinvolved in starting a podcast.
It's not particularly hard, but it's just, you know,
to do something of qualitytakes a little more effort than
(08:00):
just, uh, rip and read or, uh,
whatever live to thehard drive. That was, uh,
that was another big thing backin the day. But suffices to say,
I've been around podcasting a long time.I've been working full-time for, uh,
raw Voice now for, orblueberry for, uh, I dunno,
5, 7, 7 years, eightyears, something like that.
(08:24):
And I'm the, uh, part, partowner. And, uh, and, uh,
yeah, it's going swimmingly. I work in a,
a shed in my backyard and, uh,
have a 45 foot commuteout my back door. And,
uh, yeah, life is good. But,
so that's kind of the, the briefhistory. I figure all told,
(08:47):
I've probably created and published 2,500
episodes in one form or another.
And I've guested on several podcastsand guest hosted some podcasts.
I guest hosted, uh, geek NewsCentral before, uh, for Todd, uh,
who's also the CEO ofBlueberry and Raw Voice.
(09:08):
And speaking of which, uh,
guesting on shows tomorrow afternoon, uh,
I'm gonna be on the Podcasting2.0 show with, uh, Adam Curry,
the inventor of podcasting, orco-inventor of podcasting, and Dave Jones,
the Pod Sage. And, uh,
Todd and I are gonna be guestson the Podcasting 2.0 show.
(09:31):
And you won't findPodcasting 2.0 on Spotify.
You won't find it on Apple,
or you might find it on Apple ifsomebody stuck it in there. But, uh,
they didn't put it there themselves.
And Podcasting 2.0 is kind ofa big thing, uh, these days,
in my humble opinion. If youwant to read all about it,
go to podcast index.org.And they have a lot of,
(09:55):
lot of things. Actually, I shouldsay it's today. 'cause I'm,
I'm recording a day ahead, sothis is actually November 2nd,
but I will be on November 3rd.
And if you download eitherFountain or Pod verse
and I, and there's probably someother ones, uh, from the, uh,
podcast apps.com page,
(10:16):
and then subscribe to Podcasting 2.0,
you'll get a, a noticeabout, uh, two o'clock,
1 30, 2 o'clock that, uh,podcasting 2.0 is live,
and that is live. We're live streamingit. So you'll get a notice there,
and then you hit, uh, play andyou're listening live to, uh,
(10:39):
us recording that show.
And then it'll be put out later asa regular podcast in an RSS feed.
But that's part of thePodcasting 2.0 stuff.
So if you get on a newer applike Pod Verse or Fountain or
I don't know, there's,there's a bunch of 'em.
I'll have a link to that page inthe show notes over@mikedell.com.
(11:00):
But, uh, yeah, the,
the old legacy apps and almostpodcast apps like Spotify,
that's not really a podcast app. Idon't believe this show's in Spotify,
but if it is, I didn't put itthere. And, uh, I am an Apple,
although looking at mystats for this show,
most of you guys are usingOvercast or casts or,
(11:25):
you know, some, some of thosebetter apps, uh, than, you know,
like Spotify is a music app. They should, you know, they're,
they're great for music, notso great for podcasting. Uh,
the whole new YouTube thing I'mgonna do an episode about. In fact,
probably tomorrow I'm gonna do an episodeexplaining YouTube big air quotes,
podcasts, . 'cause they're not,
(11:48):
but Google seems to thinkthey are. Anyway, with that,
I don't want to keep you too long. I'msure you got lots of shows to listen to.
We'll catch you tomorrow. Thanks for listening.
