(00:01):
Good morning, good evening, goodafternoon, whatever the case may be.
This is Mike Doll's, world number 3 91 for
November 4th, 2023. Nap Pod Pomo 23.
Okay, wow, that gets longerand longer each time.
So today he just got off ofa live stream slash podcast
(00:24):
recording with Adam Curry, the pod father,
and Dave Jones,
the Pod Sage and Todd Cochran, the podcast, curmudgeon,
, I guess we'llname him that. Anyway,
the four of us had a really gooddiscussion on what was going on in the
podcasting world and,
(00:45):
and some other thingswith Podcast 2.0, which,
if you're not familiar with it, go overto podcast index.org and check it out.
Uh, it's aims to, uh, completely, uh,
keep podcasting free andopen rather than closed
and, uh, and censored and,and all that other good stuff.
(01:07):
You've heard me talk about that before.
But what I wanna talk to youabout today is what podcast app
are you listening to,to, uh, hear this show?
And I really do wanna know, pleaseshoot a quick email, mike@mikedell.com.
Put app in the, in the, uh, subject line,
(01:28):
and tell me what app or appsyou use to listen to this show.
I'm gonna guess that, uh,those of you who reply,
it's gonna be a higher number of peoplenot using the default app on their
phone. And really with Android, there isn't a default app.
I guess Google Podcast forthe time being is that,
(01:52):
but, uh, I really do wanna know. Soplease, please, please, please, please,
if you do nothing else, just, you know,
just type app in the subjectline and shoot me an email.
Tell me what app you're using to listen.
I can look at my stats and kinda telltoo, but I wanna hear from you guys.
So mike@mikedell.com.
(02:12):
mike@mikedell.com. . Alright,
so here, here's the deal.
There's three differentcategories of podcasts,
listening apps. Well, four, let's, let's do four. Uh,
and I'll categorize these, uh, by,
(02:32):
in rank order worst to best.
The worst is something like Pandora,
iHeart, Spotify, uh,
soon to be YouTube. And, you know,
apps like that where they're not,
(02:54):
that app is not focused on.
Podcasting. Amazon's anotherone. There's nothing wrong.
I don't care where you listen to behonest with you, but I think you're,
you're getting a bad experienceusing those particular apps,
in my humble opinion, ormaybe not so humble. Uh, the,
(03:15):
the second tier apps, I would say,
or second tier way of listeningto podcasts is just on a webpage.
Again, nothing wrong with that, Ido it myself sometimes, but, uh,
just listening on a webpage, uh, onyour computer or even your phone,
you don't see that as much, but youknow, somebody listening on the desktop,
(03:38):
what if you're sitting there? Andthat's probably a good way to go.
And then there's the, what I call legacy apps.
And I don't count Spotify as a legacyapp because they're really a music app,
but the legacy apps like
Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, until they close it, uh,
(04:03):
overcast to a certain extent, althoughI love our overcast. Marco, please,
please do some, uh, newstuff. But anyway, ,
I do love Overcast, and a lot of you guysuse that one, but that's a legacy app.
It doesn't have any of the newpodcast 2.0 features in it yet.
It does have a lot of other coolfeatures like the, uh, smart playlist.
(04:26):
But again, that's what I consider a,
a, an, an app that's, youknow, further down. It's the,
it's second tier or legacy app, something that, uh, you know,
it's, it's okay, nothing wrong with it.
And I guess a subsubsection of that is, uh,
(04:48):
of the web version ofit is PW type apps. Uh,
and, and I believe that that's probablythe way a lot of apps are gonna go. So,
but, uh, the top tierapps in my world now, uh,
is the Podcasting 2.0 compliant apps.
And there is a, justa literal crap tone of
(05:12):
apps on this page. New podcast apps.com,
and then if you filter it to just apps,
it'll show you all the different listeningapps. And that's what I'm getting at.
So, pod fans, that one's a, uh,
PWA slash web based player. They're,
they're really good and they have themost features of any of the apps. Uh,
(05:35):
one that I just discoveredtoday that, you know,
I didn't know they had an iOS version,
but they do have an Android versionand they do now have an iOS version.
So I, I'm using Podcast Guru. I'm,
I just downloaded it. I, Iplayed with the settings and it,
it can do what I wanna do other thanthe smart playlists that I love and
(05:58):
overcast, but I think I found away around that with tags. But, uh,
there's one called Peer Tube Pod verse.I've, I use Pod Verse a lot as well,
fountain, I also use Pod Friend. That one is a whole bunch of things.
It's, uh, apps, native apps, and APWA and a web interface.
(06:18):
Ellen Beats a podcast addict, whichis kind of a legacy app, but they've,
they've, uh,
upped their game and now have a lotof the podcast 2.0 features in it.
Uh, if so, if you're on an Androidphone, uh, PO Look Up podcast addict.
If you don't like, uh, podverse Fountain or Guru, uh,
(06:40):
split Kit, I guess that's a,I don't know, that might be a,
a listening app, but there's awhole bunch of 'em. Just, you know,
flip through some of theseand give it a try. You know,
try it on my show ortry it on, uh, you know,
some of the other NaPod Pomo shows, uh, the,
it's powered by the Podcast Index. That's where they get their, uh,
(07:02):
podcast from instead offrom Apple. And, you know,
there's nothing particularlywrong with Apple. I,
I do actually enjoy their appas well. I don't use it a lot,
only because, you know, I use it forwork related stuff because, you know,
I, I have to know how it works. But,uh, you know, it's a legacy app.
(07:23):
Uh, you know, podcasting'sbeen around 19 years.
It's not a new concept anymore.
And the next generation of podcastapps are found over at, uh,
podcast apps.com. So, anyway,I, I, I really, really,
really would love you to try oneof those apps and, uh, you know,
(07:45):
sign up for an Albee walletfor, uh, Bitcoin, you know,
cost you 30 bucks to throw a, youknow, a few Satoshis in there,
and then you can, you know, rewardthe people you'll listen to. Uh,
it's, it's really a cool way to do it. Uh,
what do I do with Saturn? Oh, I, I musthave closed it otherwise you'd hear,
(08:07):
uh, boosts coming in, uh,from my appearance on, uh,
on podcasting 2.0 show. But anyway, it's,
it's just something that I, I, I wanteverybody to look at and, you know,
decide.
Do you want to be beholdento these big tech companies
that are really just out thereto sell your data and, you know,
(08:32):
throw ads at you? You know, no,
there's nothing particularly wrong withads either. You know, some podcasts,
that's how they, uh, keepthe lights on and, you know,
you should support them as well. But this value for value thing,
I think is going to be really goodfor us, independent podcasters.
And maybe, uh, if you listen to thatshow, we did, uh, a, a really good.
(08:54):
Idea came up for the advertisingpiece. So that should be fun.
But yeah, I just wanted to de debrief,
decompress from my appearance onthat show and, and, uh, say, Hey,
try a new podcast app todayor tomorrow, over the weekend,
whatever. I'll be back tomorrow.Everybody. Have a good weekend.
