Summary: In this episode (#396) of Mike Dell's World, aired on November 9th, 2023, Mike Dell reflects on his previous podcast episode, which he dubs as potentially the world's worst, entirely created with AI tools. He walks through the process of using ChatGPT for scripting, Descript for voice training, and AI for generating episode artwork. Mike shares his experiences with podcast apps, switching from Overcast to Castamatic, and recommends others for users to try. He updates listeners on his shoulder surgery recovery, the convenience of passive exercises, and the adjustments he's had to make during his recovery, including hiring help for yard work. Mike also talks about dealing with a planned power outage during his wife's birthday celebration and plans for the next podcast episode during this disruption. Key Points: - Mike Dell's experiment with a fully AI-produced podcast episode. - Tools used for the episode: ChatGPT for scripting, Descript for voice training, AI for artwork. - Discussion about various podcast apps and a personal switch to Castamatic. - Updates on shoulder surgery recovery and adjustments in daily life. - Upcoming birthday party for Mike's wife and coping with a planned power outage. Mentioned Podcast Apps: - Podcast Guru - Castamatic (recommended by Mike, possibly iOS only) - Podverse (for live shows) - Podcast Addict (for Android users) Resources: - For new podcast apps, visit: podcastapps.com, newpodcastapps.com, or podcastindex.org/apps. (00:00):
Mike Dell's World number 3 96 for
November 9th, 2023.
I.

(00:34):
Ah, there it is.
And so how terrible was thatepisode yesterday? ?
I'm gonna call that the, uh, world'sworst podcast, or at least my world,
my world's worst podcast. Yeah,
that was all done with ai, 100%.

(00:55):
The only thing that I did waspublish it on my WordPress site, uh,
which put it out to thepodcast world. But I had, uh,
I'll tell you how I didit. Uh, first I had chat,
GBT write me a scriptabout AI and podcasting,
and I edited the script a little bitto get rid of some of the extraneous

(01:17):
crap that it put in there.
And then I went to de Script and Itrained de Script to use my voice.
That did sound like me, but it wasn't me.
didn't sound like menormally had, uh, you know,
no soul or something. I don'tknow. It was weird, but it, uh,
it did a pretty good job of pronouncingeverything and it sort of sounded like

(01:41):
me, at least my voice. But, uh,yeah, wow. It was crazy. But, uh,
anyway, I trained a scriptto, uh, use my voice,
and then I fed that scriptinto it, recorded it. Then I,
uh, told chat GBT to,uh, make me some, uh,
artwork for it. And voila,

(02:03):
there's the podcast episode. I toldhim to make a 10 minute episode,
and mercifully, it was, what, three or four minutes?
Something like that. But yeah,it was hard to listen to. Uh,
so I don't think, at leastthe, the process I used,
I don't think that's ready for,for prime time. Uh, but, uh,

(02:25):
some of those tools aregetting pretty cool. The,
the episode artwork that I'vebeen doing, this whole, uh,
stretch of nap pod Pomohas been AI generated,
but some of 'em I had to do about sixtries at before it made one that was worth
it. And it doesn't spell worth a crap.
That's one of the bad thingsabout, uh, image generation.

(02:48):
Uh, if you have any text in thatimage, it just doesn't do it. But, uh,
it does make some pretty interestingartwork. If you haven't seen the artwork,
well, you should get adifferent podcast app, .
And speaking of podcast app, thanksfor, uh, those of you that, that, uh,
answered my question about whatpodcast app you're using. Uh,

(03:10):
I switched to Podcast Guru fora little bit, and then, uh,
I found one that I likea little better. Uh,
what is it called now? Castomatic.
So that's the current one thatI'm using in place of Overcast,
because it has the same featuresas Overcast and it adds a few

(03:31):
other features such as value forvalue and, and that kind of thing.
And, uh, I still use, uh,
pod verse and whatnot for
the live stuff. 'cause Castomaticdoesn't have the live in it. You know,
I listen to a couple ofshows that go live and, uh,

(03:53):
you can listen to those right in yourapp rather than have to go to wherever
they're live streaming. So itmakes it pretty convenient.
So I've been playing with Castomatic and,
and kind of switched over to it fromOvercast, and so far, so good. We'll,
I'll continue to reporton that. But, uh, yeah,

(04:13):
otherwise everything's going good here.
Still recovering fromthe shoulder surgery,
that'll be an ongoing thing forthe next, you know, couple months.
But, uh,
I'm getting to the point now where I'mdoing physical therapy home version.
Uh, they gave me, uh, uh,
sheets of exercises to do allpassive range of motion type

(04:35):
stuff. So no, uh, physical, you know,
I'm not moving the shoulderwith my shoulder muscles and,
and whatnot. Uh, it's all, uh,passive using my other hand,
or in this case, a,
a golf club to do rangeof motion for external rotation.

(04:55):
But, uh, it's, it's still a littlesore, but uh, it's getting there.
The range of motion is, it's okay. Uh,
it'll get better after I losethe sling here in another month,
and then I can do a regularphysical therapy with
a therapist and get arange of motion back and,

(05:18):
and, uh, strength back and allthat. So, uh, yeah, it's doing,
uh, doing quite well.
My doctor told me I couldn't drive forthe whole time, the whole six weeks,
which is horse crap. Uh,
I've watched a whole bunch of differentphysical therapists and doctors on, uh,

(05:39):
YouTube and all of them say, well,
once you're off the narcotics andas long as your vehicle is, uh,
compatible with, uh, drivingone handed, then you're good.
So I can't drive my ToyotaCorolla with a stick shift,
but I could drive my Chevy pickup truck.I haven't been doing a lot of driving,

(05:59):
but I've done some just a little bit. Uh,
but for the most part, I'mjust taking it easy. Uh,
just had to hire someone to takecare of the leaves in the yard. Uh,
you got done with ithere a little while ago,
otherwise I would've recorded earlier. But, uh, all the machinery was running,

(06:20):
so I got that done or got, youknow, use, used my checkbook to, uh,
rake the leaves rather than my, uh,
body sometimes themost powerful tool in the
toolbox is the checkbook. Uh,it's my wife's birthday today.
She's now the same age as I am,which I won't tell, but, uh,

(06:43):
at least for a couple of months tillI bump up another notch in January.
Uh, uh, we're having a,
a party get together this weekend, uh,
which is kind of okay, but, uh,what's weird is that we did it,
we're doing it onSaturday at three o'clock,

(07:04):
and I just got a notice from the powercompany yesterday morning that said, oh,
hey, we're gonna have a planned outagefrom 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturday.
So not only is it gonna getcold here or cold in here,
I'm gonna bump up the,the heat a little bit, uh,
before that happens so thatit'll retain a little more heat.

(07:28):
And so, yeah, so we get to, uh,
party plan in the dark. We're with no power,
so that'll be not fun, but,oh, well, stuff happens.
Gotta make sure the phones andiPads and laptops are all, uh,
charged up, I guess ifwe want internet access,

(07:50):
I don't suppose I need that,
and we just load up mypodcasts and call it good. So,
uh,
Saturday's episode ought to be interestingto record because I'm gonna have to
do it either early in themorning or after the party.
So I don't know, maybe I'll record ahead.

(08:10):
I do that some from time to time as well,
so maybe I'll record twotomorrow and meter them out. But,
but anyway, rather than just going onand on, I'll cut this one off. And, uh,
thanks for listening andcontinue to listen to Mike
Dell's world here. And again, if youwanna try one of the new podcast apps,

(08:32):
go over to podcast apps.comor new podcast apps.com,
or you can go to, uh,podcast index.org/apps.
There's a whole bunch of waysto get there and, you know,
download something new. Uh, likeI said, I recommend castomatic or,
or, uh, podcast Guru. Uh,if you're on Android, uh,

(08:55):
podcast Attic is pretty good. Uh,
I think Castomatic is only iOS,
but they're, uh, they'regood apps and, uh,
they've got some features that,uh, other apps don't have,
so they're well worth playingwith. It was also on the,
uh, nap pod, Pomo, whatever,

(09:19):
I forget what it is. They do itevery morning, a, a session on Zoom,
and I was the guest of honoron Wednesday's session, so, uh,
I don't know where to find that, butI'm sure it's there somewhere. Anyway,
catch you tomorrow. Bye-Bye.
