Estas piezas junto a Trois sarabandes y las Gymnopédies suelen clasificarse como danzas. Las Gnossiennes tienen un carácter melancólico. Un gran número de producciones cinematográficas, televisivas e incluso videojuegos han incluido alguna o varias Gnossiennes dentro de su banda sonora. Asimismo diversos artistas musicales han hecho sus propias versiones y adaptaciones de estas obras.
