Jackie* went to an audiologist in Oct 2013 complaining that she couldn’t hear. The audiologist gave her a hearing test and suggested that she might have an auditory processing disorder (APD) after her hearing test results displayed essentially normal hearing sensitivity. These findings didn’t match the level of difficulty she was experiencing in her day to day life. No further appointments or referrals were made.
In May 2019, she told her family doctor that she was really struggling with her hearing, but she knew that her hearing sensitivity was normal. Her doctor sent her to a talented otologist in Tauranga, New Zealand, who sent her for another hearing test. Once again, her hearing test results were essentially normal, but her concerns didn’t seem to match those findings. Mr. Wouter Ten Cate then sent her to our clinic in Taupo, New Zealand, for a full auditory processing evaluation. Today’s episode is what she told us the first time she met with us.
