Hello, you are listening to My Dog digs Dirt. I'm
your host, Lauren Collier, and we're talking pet fitness today.
It might surprise you to learn that more than half
of all adult pets in this country are considered overweight
and unfit. That's right, So what can we humans do
to help them fight the battle of the bulge and

(00:43):
live longer.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
In healthier lives. My dog digs Dirt has that answer.
We'll be back in a bark. I love cleaning the
litter box, said no one.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Ever.

Speaker 5 (01:00):
Luckily there's World's Best Cat litter, the litter that promises
less mess with less litter only. World's Best Cat Litter
uses the concentrated power of corn to quickly trap odors
in tight clumps, and quick clumping means you never have
to chisel or scrape the box. Less cleanup with less
wasted litter. That's a litter bit amazing. Save two dollars

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Let's talk pets on petlife radio dot com.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Welcome back to My Dog dig Dirt.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
So have you noticed an extra jiggle on your pets belly.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
If so, you aren't alone.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Pets are apparently getting fatter and more out of shape
than ever, but my guest is trying to change that.
Let's welcome Trisia Montgomery, who is a fitness expert and
founder of care Fit Club.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Welcome to the show.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Trisha, thanks for having me. Lauren, thanks for having me.
And it's not just our dogs getting a little bit poortly.
It's the humans and the and the parents as well.

Speaker 6 (02:11):
So it's not.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Well, yeah, I hear you, but it is very interesting
because I think sometimes it's difficult to see that in
your own dog.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
Oh it is, it really is, right, It definitely is.
I think that. And according to a new survey from
the Association of PETALBC Prevention that people when they look
at their dog, they feel that their dog is a
normal weight when actually their dog is overweight. So it
is it is a trend that we're looking at our
dogs and being oh, they're okay, when they actually need

(02:43):
to lose a few pounds similar to us.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, and it's interesting because it's not always you know,
like a fat belly that determines that.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
What would if you looked at your pet, how would
you really.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Know if they weren't obviously looking like you know, they
were heavier.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
Well, I think that you would have to look at
it in turn and looking at overall from the top
of the dog and looking at the frame of them
and seeing if there is if they're coming in at
the ribcage, or if they're rounded out, if they're moving slower,
any of those kind of tendencies. Are they getting at
are they being active? And I think for Keenin and Thicklub,
what we really want to do is is it's about

(03:20):
being healthy and whatever healthy that is. It's getting up,
getting active and moving together and creating that great parallel
program between the two of you.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Well, yeah, I mean, I'm so excited to have you
on because I think this is not only something that's
important because there are health issues that come when you're
overweight humans and dogs, but also it's something really fun
that you can do with your pet. How did you
get started attrition? Because it's really a personal journey for
you as well.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
It is a personal journey for me. So I used
to be morbidly obese. I went to see my veterinarian
and he looked at me and he said every time
I came in on lous my dog Flui gaining weight,
but he had the onset of diabetes and I wasn't
giving a dinner and that really that was a catalyst
and the changing of my life. And as my blessings,
my luck would have it, I was actually able to

(04:08):
work in the vettery profession. I went on to become
public education director and executive director for the Chicago Veterinary
Medical Association, and that the vettery profession has changed my life.
And Beverly was the starting point for me looking at
the trend between people and dogs and that more often
than not, when a veterinarian seas an overweight dog or

(04:28):
cap for that matter, more likely than not the owner
sitting across from them is unhealthy as well. And how
do you broach that subject? So how do you approach it?
You start with something fun and that's kine. I'm Thick Club.
So our programs are over twenty one programs now and
they range from Papilate's nom Sit Stay, Begging for a Beginner,
bow Foot Camp, Rover Run Club. But those whimsical names

(04:51):
don't be misled by those because people and their dogs
are losing thousands of pounds of caine. I'm Thick club,
And there's so much research right now, Lauren related to
that because because people who are unhealthy, people who are
maybe obese, are more likely to work out with the
dogs because their dog provides the confidence, that security and
lessons the embarrassment, and they're getting thirty four percent more

(05:14):
exercise than those people without a dog. So it's a
win win.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Well, you know it's interesting because I remember several years ago,
I was not morbally obese. You know, I was overweight
a little maybe ten pounds or so, and at that
time I got a dog, and of course she wanted
to be walked and I wasn't even really trying and
I turned around and.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
I had lost the weight, like no problem.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
So that's the thing I love about the Canine Fit
Club because it's just sort of you're having fun, you're
not even thinking that you're trying to lose weight or
you know, it's sort of takes your mind off of it.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Wouldn't you agree with that, Tricia, Oh.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
My goodness, it does. It does.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
And that's what our participants say. Because they're working out,
their sweating, they're getting a workout, they're streaking their muscles
or toning down. The dogs are getting a workout as well.
They're strengthening their muscles, they're getting flexibility, they're getting the
cardio and at the end of the class, people are like,
oh my gosh, I had so much fun. I didn't
even realize that I was.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Doing a workout right, And that's the fun of it.
And you don't have to be overweight to enjoy the
class that you offer. And also you can be older,
you can be disabled that you really include everyone. Talk
about that for a little bit, because I really that's
really special.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Thank you.

Speaker 7 (06:28):
We don't leave anyone behind at Canine Thit Club, and
we cater to the entire bell curve of fitness, whether
you're young or young at heart, whether you're in great
barcam Burn shape, or you're.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
In a sit, stay and get fit class. Because everyone
is welcome at Canine Thick Club. And I also have
to say we really we're not just a bunch of
people jumping around with a bunch of dogs. We are
approved by Healthway Silver Sneakers, which means Medicare pays for
people to come to Canine Thick Club classes. We are
approved by Association of PTOPT Prevention, National Associations for Medicine,

(07:00):
and I can go on and on, but we're recognized
by accredited organizations, so we've done the homework. Our programs
were created by experts such as doctor Ernie Ward, Association
of pet OBSU inventioned doctor David Levine in creating these
programs and putting a science behind what we're doing, because
when you are working out with a dog and a human,
you have to know what you're doing. There is a

(07:22):
standard of excellence behind it because say that person maybe
they may have osteoarthritis or the dog may be pulling.
You've got to look at the gate. You've got to
know how the best work with that person. So they
come to us for master training. Every person that is
part of our Canine Fit clubs, they have gone through
extensive master training classes with us here in Chicago.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
And you don't have to live in Chicago to take part.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
You do not. We have forty clubs in the US
and Canada and expanding all across the nation this year.
And I'm also excited to announce there's going to be
a Canine Pit to Go, which is going to be
a subscription model opening up soon. I say look for
that May or June and we're going to be doing
live stream and on demand classes. Super cool. So we're
going to be able to reach every dog owner, every

(08:09):
nong dog owner in America to work out with Canine
Pit Club.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
I love that And what I mean some people would
say like, well, but my dog's never going to do that.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
What would you say to them?

Speaker 4 (08:19):
You know what? I hear that so much. The thing
is they're not trying, and it goes up and down
the leash. If I think that I'm having a bad day,
I'm having a bad day. Who else is going to
have a bad day? My dog is going to have
a bad day. It's getting the human in the proper
frame of mind, and we are flip flopping the industry.
What we're doing is I am focusing on the people

(08:40):
through their dogs, and by extension, the dog is getting
healthier in the process. But first we have to educate
the human.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
That's just what you have to do.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
You can't just you know, it's great to say all
I'm going to drop my dog off and give them
a doggy day here Ontario or dog walking service, but
the bottom line is unless we're doing something together, we're
not going to really understand that. And we find that
people who say that really within five seven minutes of
a class, they're like, oh my god, I didn't think
my dog would do yeah, and.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
I I was going to say, it's like you have
to go out there and try it and.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Then you see this is how it's fun.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Okay, we're going to take a short break, but we
will be back with Canine Fit Club, will find out
where you can get involved, and we'll talk more with Chrisha,
So stay tuned.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
My dog, dig Stirt will be right.

Speaker 8 (09:23):
Back, going back to the myvegs and saying you cost
me a lot of misery and all total twenty seven
hundred dollars in doggy fees and it all it took
was one container of dynavite two pounds three ounces, and
my dog has been sure. Abby's a five year old
Silkie Terrier. She had like chicken pox on her belly,

(09:45):
clusters of bumps on her back, and she was allergic
to like seventy somehat things. So the dermatologist it was like,
oh yeah, just keep giving her meals every ten days,
but she's not clearing up. And then I came up
on my radio Dynamite d n o v E eight
two eight one does Dynabyte is nutrition? I give her
the dynamite after five weeks and one morning there was

(10:07):
nothing there and I'm like, she's all clear. There wasn't
one blemish on her body. Prefur is beautiful, she is
totally happy. She is a healthy, bum free, pimple free, shiny, silky.
It turned our lives around. So thank you very much
for Dynamite. I couldn't be happier. Dynabtees the mom eight.

Speaker 4 (10:22):

Speaker 2 (11:25):
My dog digs Dirt is back. We're here with Tricia Montgomery.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Who's a fitness expert.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
I can say that Tricia and founder of the Canine
Thit Club. So, Tricia, you're based in Chicago, but let's
our listeners are all around the world. How can we
find you? How can we get involved? No matter where
you are, you.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
Can go to our website at caninefitclub dot com and
you can look up license locations or find a location,
plug in that your zip code and you'll be able
to find a Canine Thick Club in your area. Or
they can also call us at eight four four Canine
Fit Club and we can connect them to some people
as well, and more than happy to do that. More
locations are going to be opening around the country this

(12:03):
year as well as again anyone anywhere anytime. We'll be
able to take a canine fit Cloud class with us
on demand and live stream classes, and that's something to
be able to really reach people and get people up
out and moving and getting off their butts and working
out with their mutts. And I have to say, there's
a lot of people out there that work out with

(12:24):
us that don't have a dog, because we have so
much fun when we're at the location for people so well,
I don't have a dog. We have a loan and
leash program and what we do is we work with
animal shelters and rescue groups.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Oh that's terrific, right, And so.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
People will come in and they'll say, well, you know,
I'd like to work out with a dog. We'll be
able to work with those humane associations. In the process,
we get dogs adopted. We help, you know, get dogs
adopted with our lone and leash program. In the process,
we get them healthy and active at the same time.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
And what if a humane shelter is interested, should they
contact you as well, you know, if they want to
get their dogs involved.

Speaker 8 (12:57):
Absolutely, I love that.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
We love we'd love to talk to them. And we're
about giving back, we really are. And it's all of
us getting healthy together. It's wanting four people and not
from people. And we're again we're changing the world. That
is what this company is all about. And so proud
of our teams for doing this and just being alongside
us in this journey.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
What about if you can a cat do this too?
Or not necessarily?

Speaker 4 (13:22):
Well, you know, as I say, cats are me out,
get it out? No, I you know my daughter loves cats,
she has two cats, and I've never tried to work
out with a cat before. We find it easier with
a dog. Although I'm sure that somewhere Sunday somebody's going
to come up with a feline pickfoy.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Exactly, I know, because there's no agility now, so right,
you never know. Now, I want you to give our
listeners an idea. If somebody enrolls in a class, is
it in a classroom?

Speaker 3 (13:49):
Can it be anywhere? How does it work? What can
you expect?

Speaker 4 (13:53):
Sure, well, it depends upon where the location is and
who's instructing the class. You might find us in a park,
you might find us in a in a standalone location,
or a doggy day here, or a fitness facility. But
if you come into a class, if it's a bow
lail boot camp or begging for a beginner class, you
can count on about a fifty five minute class that's
going to include a warm up and getting kind of

(14:13):
both of you warmed up and acclimated to that working
out together how to hold a leash, and then you
go into a little bit of cardio, a little bit
of biometric strength training exercises. You may go into rovers,
reverse lunges, sally squats. We utilize equipment such as fit paws,
fit balls the climb as well, so the dog by extension,

(14:34):
naturally is getting some obedience training with it, but it's
really that activity and the parallel programs of working out together.
After that time, we'll go into a cool down, a
little bit of stretching, and then kind of leading from there.
It is not a social hour of dogs that are
never off leash. We do a health assessment and an evaluation,
and there is a healthy to participate form from the

(14:56):
veterinarian prior to a human coming in into the class,
because we want to make sure it's safe class and
affected class, but overall a fun class and making sure
especially in Chicago right now there's the canine Blue that
it's broken out again, so we want to make sure
that every dog and human coming into that class is
going to have an amazing experience and want to come

(15:17):
back again.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Yeah, I could.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
I saw some of your videos and you could see
clearly that the people and the dogs that were really
having a fun time and you know, so it's really
a wonderful thing you're doing.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
We should stress too, you know.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
We talked about, you know the importance of not only
it's not only fun, it's not only good for an adult,
but it's also good for a can nine because when
they're overweight, there's a lot of health issues that come
with that which can be really serious.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
Wouldn't you agree with that, Tricia?

Speaker 4 (15:47):
Absolutely similar to human's dog are plugged with the same
diseases because of obesity, and whether it's heart disease, diabetes,
osteoarthreadits and more. Obesity really is a disease and it
is a leading cause of illnesses and you can go
down the line and right now, if you look at
the classifications we have now as humans, the CDC Center

(16:09):
for the Disease Control has had classified obesity as a disease,
and I know within the better of profession they're certainly
looking at that as well, that it is a disease
and it is the leading cause of many health related problems.
And what we want to do is is get those
people and their dogs to live longer, happier and healthier lives.

(16:30):
And that's through health, fitness and wellness. And again, we're
not about six pack ads, although some people have them,
ah where yeah, I can paint them on me, but
that other than that, No, we're about being healthy at
both ends of the leash. That's what we're about.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
It's terrific. So once again let's remind our listeners. Tricia,
it's Canine Fit Club. Where can we find.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
You Caninefitclub dot com. And again, we have over forty
locations all across the nation, US and Canada and love
to have you guys.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
Fantastic, So get fit with your pooch and have fun
at the same time and you'll feel better too, I
think so. Thank you so much, Trisha, thank you everybody
out there. I'm Lauren Collier and this has been my
dog digs Dirt.
