Jaywalking, playing video games too late, playing music too loud in public, not paying bills on time, and criticizing the government are just a couple of ways the Communist Party of China will control their citizens with the social credit score system that is planned to roll out in 2020. This score will dictate what rights and freedoms people have. If an individual's score is too low they can be placed on a “blacklist” which will prevent them from buying plane/ train tickets or qualifying to work in desired jobs. The social credit score system will also allow the government to track and monitor the activities of all businesses in China. The system is described by some as a “digital dictatorship” and a “dystopian nightmare straight out of Black Mirror”. Ian Miles Cheong joins us to explore the current pilot social credit score systems that are in place and what to expect with the 2020 model. We will also discuss why the West should care about the 2020 roll out.
