Marc Dutroux lærte allerede som barn, hvad vold og ydmygelser kan gøre ved et menneske. Alligevel valgte han at kopiere den adfærd, han selv var blevet pint og plaget af som lille. Et voldsomt mørke tog form i hans tanker, og han kom allerede som helt ung på politiets radar for småkriminalitet og senere for alvorlige seksualforbrydelser. Selvom han endte med at afsone en længere dom for flere grove kidnapninger og voldtægter, var der ingen, der senere overvejede, om han spillede en rolle, da piger forsvandt på stribe. Marc Dutroux formåede ikke bare at holde sig langt under politiets søgelys, han blev ligefrem hjulpet af myndighederne til at begå sine uhyrlige forbrydelser, og konkrete advarsler blev ignoreret.
