Hvis vi skærer det helt ind til benet, er planter et væsen, som – sammen med algerne – er enestående. De er nemlig de eneste organismer, der direkte kan udnytte solens lys. Det gør de ved at bruge solens energi til at lave fotosyntese. Dermed producerer de den ilt, vi indånder, den mad vi spiser. Kort sagt: de er grundlaget for alt andet komplekst liv på Jorden.
I modsætning mennesker er planter tilpasset til at stå ét bestemt sted. Derfor kan de ikke flygte, hvis der er fare på fære.
