Ab Mitte der 1990er war Echtzeitstrategie das dominierenden (PC-)Genre, Titel wie Warcraft, Command & Conquer oder Age of Empires zogen die Spieler in ihren Bann. Auslöser dieses Hypes war Dune II — Kampf um Arrakis, das auf der Sci-Fi-Romanreihe Der Wüstenplanet von Frank Herbert basiert.
Das war zwar streng genommen nicht der erste Vertreter der Echtzeitstrategie, gab jedoch die Marschrichtung vor, der viele Entwickler folgten und somit das Gesicht des Genres prägten.
