Season 3, Episode 2

Students expect to hear textbook terminology in class. But Dr. Janell Carroll, author of Sexuality Now: Embracing Diversity, says using only scientific language in Human Sexuality can make students uncomfortable. With the right mix of slang and classroom-appropriate wording, your class can discuss social media, consent and other topics that influence how sexuality is viewed today. Learn more from Dr. Janell Carroll—who literally wrote the book on sex—on this episode of the Neuro Transmission.

Guest Biography

Dr. Janell Carroll is an AASECT certified sexuality educator and a member of the faculty at the University of Hartford, where she has been teaching Psychology courses for over 25 years. Dr. Carroll has travelled the world exploring and documenting the wide cultural differences in sexual and gender practices around the globe. She has also authored several books, including a college-level human sexuality textbook, Sexuality Now: Embracing Diversity (now in its 6th edition) and a popular press book about menstruation, When Aunt Flo Comes to Visit. An engaging and dynamic speaker and presenter, Dr. Carroll has been a featured expert on multiple TV, radio and social network sites. A graduate of Denison University and the University of Pennsylvania, she and her family live in Connecticut.

Dr. Carroll became fascinated by Psychology during her sophomore year of college. Like many people, her interest was sparked by a professor who, she recalls, “brought energy and passion to the classroom.” Soon afterwards, she began working on a research project with her professor and had it published, leading to graduate school and, eventually, the teaching of Psychology as a profession!
