April Fools’ Day: A Day of Tricks—But Don’t Be Deceived. April Fools’ Day has been around for centuries, but its origins are a little murky. Some say it started in 1582 when France switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, moving the New Year from April 1st to January 1st. Those who didn’t get the memo—or refused to accept the change—were mocked and tricked, earning the title of “April fools.” Others trace it back to ancient Roman festivals where deception and pranks were part of the celebration. Either way, it’s a day built on fooling people, making them believe something that isn’t true.
Yesterday, I played along. On social media, I teased that Other People’s Shoes was coming to an end and that the time had come for a change. It was just a joke, but for a moment, some believed it. And that got me thinking—how often do we believe the lies we’re told?
Because the truth is, deception isn’t just for one day a year. It’s happening all around us, every single day.
Right now, our young people are being fed lies—about their identity, their worth, their purpose. They’re told they can define their own truth, that faith is outdated, that they don’t belong. And many parents are left feeling helpless, believing another dangerous lie: there’s nothing they can do.
My guest, Debra McNinch, knows this battle all too well.
For her, one phone call changed everything. She had raised her family in faith, yet one of her children took a path she never expected. Fear, shame, and heartbreak followed. She wondered where she went wrong, and questioned if she had failed as a mother. But then she learned the most powerful truth of all:
God is not done writing their story.
In Battle Cry, Debra shares how to:
Develop a focused daily prayer plan to lay your prodigal at Jesus’ feet.
Let go of your imagined “fairy-tale” life and trust God with your reality.
Overcome the shame of not raising perfect Christian children.
Her motto is simple: NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE.
This is a wake-up call. The enemy wants us to believe our prodigals are too far gone, that prayer doesn’t work, that hope is lost. But that’s just another trick.
Who will rise up? Who will answer the call to stand in the gap, to battle in prayer, to intercede for our sons and daughters?
Satan may think he’s won, but the battle isn’t over. God is still in control, and our prodigals are coming home.
