When people grow old or become very sick, they often spend time thinking about what might happen when life ends. It is natural to wonder what comes next, and people from every culture and religion have imagined it in different ways. Some people speak about heaven, others about reincarnation, and some believe death is simply the end. But there is one curious set of experiences that seems to cross cultures and history: deathbed visions.
A deathbed vision is a strange and powerful event reported by people who are close to dying. They might suddenly announce that they see their mother standing in the room, even though she died long ago. They may reach out their hands to someone invisible, whispering, “They’ve come for me.” They sometimes describe beautiful places filled with light, or hear music that no one else in the room can hear. Family members and doctors who witness these moments often feel awe, puzzlement, and sometimes comfort.
