Mats Karström är skogsräddare. I 35 år har han sökt upp gammelskogar som inte avverkats och saknar skydd. När han räddat 200 skogar ska han sluta.

Han är hjärnan bakom den metod som skogsfolk och biologer använder för att avgöra om en skog har höga biologiska värden och han har grundat skogsgruppen Steget före. Mats Karström har vigt sitt liv åt att ge gammelskogar ett formellt skydd. Hans önskan nu är att myndigheter och skogsägare tar sitt ansvar och att han kan sluta vakta på de värdefulla skogarna. Nu vill han bli en sorglös fältbiolog igen.
