This is porn Talk. He wasyour host, Eric Zuzak, Welcome back
to porn Talk. This is powerful, Eric. This show's not just about
breaking in addictions, it's about breakin belief systems. And we have an
incredible belief breaker here back today. He was just on our last episode.
(00:23):
He is back. He's John Giro'dono. He's the founder of the National Institute
for Holistic Addictionary Studies. This manis an extraordinary individual. He's the author
of The Kid from the South Bronxwho Would Never give Up. Welcome back,
John GIORDANOD Welcome John. Hi Eric. So John, let's pick up
(00:46):
where we left off. If youcouldn't get into the thing that was really
challenging for me is I really wantedto improve. I really wanted to get
better, and I went just thetraditional route, you know they put you
on and essence, you go toa traditional therapist. And it did not
work for me, like it didnot actually got worse, and so I
(01:08):
had to go out on my own. And especially like with sex and corn
addiction, like you think drugs andalcohol, I mean that's a little more
out there. This this is sucha stigma about it, and so I
had to kind of go out onmy own and find things that worked,
and I thank god I did,and I share them with the world.
So maybe you could share with usone maybe before you get into it,
(01:33):
maybe a story, maybe uh aboutJames Brown or whatever. And then if
you can get into some of youralternative recovery modalities that you use, well,
wherever you want me to start,I could start. You know what.
The problem with all these addictions isthe shame and guilt that's attached to
it. And you know, everybodyhave something. I don't care who you
(01:57):
are, you know, where youcome from. We all have some kind
of abnormality that we're dealing with, okay. And you know, you know
there's a saying in the programs thinkingthinking, Okay, well, you know,
the thoughts control a lot of thechemicals in your body. People don't
realize that either, okay, becauseit's not easy to control this team of
(02:23):
wild horses here in your head, all right. They look for a quick
fix, a pill, okay,or just succumb to whatever. Look,
it's an odd recovery. Excuse me. Recovery is an ongoing battle, okay.
It's not something that you do whenyou're stunt, all right, it's
a it's a moment the moment,day by day challenge. Sometimes sometimes it's
(02:46):
fine for a while, the boom, that little ugly head rises again,
and here you are again. No, I won't do it anymore. You
do it again, and you arewhy did I do that? What's that's
wrong with me? Then you beatyourself up, Then you go back into
it. I mean, it's likea never ending story. And you know
it's just a work in progress. But long, I believe, long as
(03:07):
you keep working on it, Okay, it doesn't go away, but it
diminishes. Okay, where it doesn'tcontrol your life, Okay, sometimes it
does, sometimes it doesn't, butit gets less and less if you're really
working on yourself. And is itdifficult, absolutely okay. Are you gonna
win all the time? Absolutely notokay, But if you succumb to it,
(03:30):
you're going to lose all the time. And if you're in a relationship
and you have if it's a womanor it's a guy, and you're insecure,
okay, then you're gonna have aproblem because insecurity, in relations oh
you're watching the girls, you're watchingthat I'm not good enough? What's going
on? You know, don't Iplease you. You know it goes on
(03:52):
and on and on, has nothingto do with you, or this is
all in the head. Okay,it's like mental masturbation. I'll put it
for you that way, so youknow it has nothing to do with the
person you're with. Okay, ithas to do that. We're energy seekers,
we love, we're excitement junkies.Okay, so we need excitement.
(04:15):
We don't have excitement, we fillwe're depressed. Okay. We don't know
what normal is. Addicts don't knowwhat normal is. The only normal I
know is a dial on a washingmachine. We have no clue about what
normal is. If you're just rollingalong, oh that means I'm depressed.
If I'm up here, oh man, I'm good. Everything's great. You
(04:38):
know, probably manic. You know, you don't even realize that either.
It all depends with there's there's it'sthere's a bunch of things involved in mental
health and addiction. It's not justpsychologically, okay, and that's where we
fall short addiction recovery centers, whetherit's for point addiction or or sex addictional,
(05:00):
gambling, addiction, whatever you wantto talk about, Okay, it's
basically the same thing we call itRDS reward deficiency syndrome. Now what does
that mean. That means you havea deficiency in serotonin and dopamine, you
know. And the bottom line isis that that fluctuates. Okay, and
(05:24):
when you're down on dopamine and serotonin, you look to bounce it back up.
Whatever, with food, with sex, with risky behaviors, with business,
whatever. Okay, But we takeit to another level. We don't
know how to balance that. Sothat takes practice. That takes time.
(05:46):
Sometimes you're really good for a while, sometimes you're not good. You have
a dip. Okay, but yougot to keep going, all right,
otherwise you succumb to it, andthen you know what happens. You wind
up in poo poo land. Andthat's why one of your alternatives. I
was impressed that you use it asamino acids. The book The Mood Cure
(06:10):
talks about that. Can you speakto that about using amino acids? Sure,
we have fifteen Well well here, let me tell you. The audience
doesn't know. So for some reasonwhatever, I got very fortunate. I
got involved with some of the toughscientists in the world, actually not in
this country, but in the world. I'm in eighteen Medical and Scientific peer
(06:31):
review journalist. And I told youwhere I came from, all right,
I came from the South Bronts. All right, here I am and with
a bunch of scientists and researchers fromall over the world. And I happened
to be with some of the topones in the world. Doctor blum Gus,
I told you earlier on the othershow. He was the one who
him and doctor Ernie Noble developed thatThey found that the main addiction gene,
(06:58):
which is the d on D twodopamine addiction gene, that means you don't
have enough receptor sites and you don'thave enough dopamine and causes you a cascade
of other problems that go on withother genes. I work with doctor Deborah
Mash. She's a pioneer in ibygaintreatment, which the psychedelics. So I
became a pioneer in psychedelics in nineteenninety six. I worked with her.
(07:20):
Okay, I did the counseling doingintegration. Ibergain is a bush from West
Africa that was used by the Wheeditribe as a rite of passage. But
they found out that this heroinautic. This guy Howard lutz Off went to Gabron
to go get high from this newdrug called ibogain. Anyway, he did
(07:46):
the ivy game. He woke upthe next morning detoxed and he didn't have
any cravings, which was impossible. It usually takes anywhere from seven to nine
days to stabilize, not even detoxokay, So he wind up opening up
in Panama and he got a holdof doctor Match somehow. But you know,
(08:07):
and it's just because they stopped drugsand alcohol, their behaviors need time
to redevelop. So she left himand opened up in say Kits in nineteen
ninety six, nineteen ninety five.I wind up being with her. I
was doing the counseling with other therapistsand we were doing integration therapy with them,
meaning, you know, when youdo psychedelics, you know, not
(08:28):
have to have an intent, Youhave to have a plan where do you
want to go? You know, and then when you come out, I
help you to understand what you sawin your journey, how it matches what
you have in life, and onand on and on. So that's another
person that I'm One of my othermentors is doctor Paul Hartsch doctor Hartch is
(08:50):
a pioneer in hyperbaric medicine that's oxygenunder pressure that he went to the Senate
with doctor h I think was hisname. Anyway, he went to the
Senate and he got them to approveWold healing for diabetics for the VA because
they were cutting off arms and legs, and it actually heals wounds, but
(09:13):
it also heals TBI cases, traumaticbrain injury cases and drums an alcohol damage
your brain, so it also healslots of your brain that are damaged.
So those are some of the peopleI work with and also worked with the
Spider Man Sea guys. The doctorLinus, Yeah, Linus that one of
(09:35):
the direct uh doctors that worked directlyin the Linus bowling. Uh. He's
the vitamin C guy that found vitaminC. How great? It wasn't a
matter of fact, doctor showit.Dalla from Stance Lass University, I worked
well, he was on one ofmy he was on my faculty. He's
(09:56):
the one that did the research projecton five hundred adolescents with nutrients and changing
their diet and and you know whenthe treatment center, these were really kids
that were really lost and bad kids. Not bad kids but kids were not
good kids. Okay. Anyway,it showed that their behaviors changed and they
(10:18):
weren't so nasty and angry. Yeah, nutrients we make a difference. Well.
I now own another treatment center calledJc's Recovery Center in Hollywood. It's
a faith based program, non phenomenal, you know. And what I've done
is we put together an executive programand these are the things that really help
(10:41):
with porn addiction. Any addiction doesn'tmatter. Okay. What we want to
do is you want to diminish inflammationin the body. Okay, you want
to raise dopamine and serotonin. Mostpeople don't realize where where depression and anxiety
comes from. It's not just psychological, okay, it's your gut, your
second brain, your microbiata, yourmicrobiome, the flora in your gut,
(11:07):
whatever you want to call it.Okay, when you when your bacteria in
your gut is out of balance, your brain is out of balance. You
excause you have more neur uns inyour gut than you have in your brain.
Go look it up, guys.I always tell people, please,
don't believe a w I tell yougo look up this stuff. Okay,
what you say, I know eightynine of dopamine seratoi's manufacturing your gut goes
(11:30):
up the vegas nerve. Okay, you learn about what the vegas nerve is
all about, okay, and itdeposits and into your brain. Now,
if you have the DRD two addictiongene, okay, well you have a
deficiency to begin with it. Now, just because you have that gene doesn't
(11:50):
mean you're going to become an addict, okay, because there's such a thing
as epigenetics. Epigenetics means a socialenvironment can actually change the genix. Okay.
So but when you add all thesethings together, then deficiencies, vitamin
and nutrient deficient is what we doat the center. We do micronutrient testing,
(12:11):
okay, to see where you're deficientin your body with nutrients. Nutrients
in your body. Deficiency can causemental health issues. Then you have gut
issues, leaky gut syndrome. Lookthe stuff up, guys. H By
Lawyer, infection, hypoglascemia, lowblood shagar, low thyroid, low testosterone
(12:33):
or high testosterone. All of thesethings are precursors for depression and anxiety,
not just psychological Now, Okay, heavy metal toxicity, heavy metals cause neurotransmission
disruption in your brain. All right, how do I know all this stuff?
(12:56):
I learned it from all the peopleI work with, you know,
like I said, eight medical journals, scientific peer review journeys. I'm on
a team of researchers from around twelveuniversities. God put me in some crazy
places. And you know, beingan inner city kid, you learned how
to maneuver in the huper etelant ofwherever you go. You know, addicts,
(13:20):
especially addicts, we can no matterwhere you put us, we can
wind up if you put an addictin the juggle and find drugs. Well,
John, maybe this is a goodsegue into some of your stories,
like when John wants to do something, he finds a way to do it
some extraordinary ways, from dropping thousandsof dollars out of hot air balloons to
(13:41):
getting James Brown involved with his projects. Could you maybe tell one or a
couple of those stories. Yeah, now this is before recovery, guys.
I was using drugs at the time, Okay. I worked for a company
called Flea Market. You say.It was in Liberty City in Overtown in
Miami, and that's where the riotswere in nineteen eighty eighty one, and
(14:07):
Liberty City is a rough rough part, yeah, really rough time. It's
an African American community, and afterthe riots, nobody would go in that
community, especially with shop. Okay. So one of my students, karate
students owned for was one of theowners of the flea market. Wanted to
(14:28):
sell me a booth. I said, no, I don't want a booth.
I said, I want to workfor you. He said sense that
means teachers said, look, youknow you do karate, but you know
this is business or something. Isaid not no. I said how much
do you want? I said, give me a thousand a week. Now
this is nineteen eighty one eighty okay, So what I says, Okay,
I tell you what. Give metwo hundred and fifty dollars a week.
(14:52):
Tell me what you want me toaccomplish and bringing people in and doing stuff.
And if I accomplished that, Iwant a thousand a week. He
says, you got it. Monthslater, I got a thousand a week.
So then they wanted to have agrand opening, the biggest grand opening
that anybody ever wanted to have.So I said, okay, here's what
we're going to do. All right, we need a theme. So the
(15:13):
theme was we're revitalizing Liberty City andOvertown. And what I did was I
I was dancing in the churches withall the deacons and everybody and all the
pastors, and I contacted the SBApeople Small Business Association. We were teaching
people how to run a business, how to buy wholesale, you know,
(15:35):
how to market their their products andstuff like that. And I says,
you know, I want to Weneed somebody here that's going to make this
really explode. So we got tohave a concert. And the parking lot
was gigantic. Okay, so weMy friend knew James Brown, so he
(15:58):
was in the entertainment business. SoI got ahold of James Brown and we
were going to throw a James Brownconcert. Meanwhile, I said, you
know, I want to invite PresidentReagan to the opening of the flea market.
Everybody laughed at me, okay you, but I laughed. I can
a shot anyway. So I contactedthe White House. I sent the letter.
(16:25):
Two weeks later, I got aletter back. Then everybody jaw dropped
and they says, due to andI have the letter in the book,
by the way, due to hisscheduling. Doctor President Reagan can't come,
but he's sending a representative, andthey sent Carrie Meeks at the time,
I think she was represented for thestate of Florida at the time. Then
(16:47):
she became Senator Meets. Anyway, they really check you out. So they
checked all around and what I wasdoing. And my karate school actually was
in Liberty City, so I talkedto a lot of the kids there,
all right, And they went tothe Montin Luther King Foundation and they came
on stage and we had James Brownconcert. Sixty thousand people showed up.
(17:11):
Now I got the videos to showbecause nobody believes what they tell them stuff
anyway, nobody believes anybody anyway,And I think it's in the book.
I think. I don't know ifI have some pictures in the book,
I'm not sure. I don't remember. Anyway, they presented me with the
Mantin Luther King Award on stage infront of sixty thousand people. You never
know unless you knock on doors, what's going to happen next. That's the
(17:33):
lesson I want to get across toyou. Yeah, okay. So then
it was a Christmas time and theysaid you know, John, what do
you want to do for Christmas toget people into the flea market? I
said, I got a great idea. I said, I'm gonna go up
in a hot air balloon. We'regonna have Sandy Claus and Ludolf the Red
Nose ring there, okay, andwe're gonna throw flyers out over the cities.
(17:56):
No, you can't do that. We'll get tickets. I said,
no, I don't think you understand. I want to throw your money out
over the city. They said whatI said, yeah, So we said
what do you mean. I said, well, here, look, I
put a I made a sticker,I put it on a dollar bill,
and I turned the dollar bill intoa flyer. So we went out and
we threw all this money out fourtimes. When he had every radio station,
(18:18):
every television station looked at this sky, Sandy Claus and Rudolph and throwing
money out over the city. Andthen and then you guys almost crashed,
right, Yeah, curse. It'sabout five thousand dollars to do this.
We got hundreds and hundreds of thousandsof dollars worth of free publicity. Then
we had I had my own circus. I did a lot of stuff.
(18:40):
Yeah, you a lot of stuffto say the least. I mean,
we don't even have time to reallyeven scratch the surface of everything that you
did. So John, there issomebody listening right now that maybe he was
in a situation like me where likethey want to get better and they're doing
the just the traditional route. Likewhat would you what would you say?
(19:03):
Like, what could that person do? What would you suggest to that person?
Okay, there's a couple of thingsyou could do. First of all,
you got to check to see whatefficiencies you have in your body that
the micronut testing, gut testing.Okay. Then what you want to do,
all right, is go to atherapist that does monologuistic programming, n
LP, E md R, eyemovement, the sensitization reprocessing, and a
(19:30):
hypnotherapist. Those are the three thingsI would have four things I would attack
and go from there, all right, and see where you're at now,
what you want to do is,look, Uh, if you're in a
relationship, you have to you haveto communicate with your significant other. Okay.
(19:52):
If it's causing your problems, youhave to figure out why is it
causing your problems? Okay, whatare you doing? That's causing the problems.
Besides looking at porn. What kindof porn are you looking at too?
We got to see what that's takingyou. So you need a therapist
to help you to figure out whyyou're retracted that. And you know,
(20:15):
you'll see people in relations think they'redeficient in the relationship and sometimes it has
nothing to do with that. Okay. You know a lot of people don't
realize when you're in a relationship anda woman that gets you know, in
our forties and fifties, sometimes theylose their sex drive, you know,
and that could because of a lowtestosterone, and you know, they become
(20:38):
dry and it comes painful to havesex. So you have to look at
that too for the wife, youknow. So there's a lot of things
you need to go to people thatreally know what they're talking about, not
just regular people. Otherwise regular therapistssay you know, yeah, yeah,
exactly, And uh, you know, we talked a little bit about an
(21:00):
e m d R and your laston the podcast that I was on with
you, and I benefited from theEMDR and the thing that I got certified
in is the Emotional Freedom Technique ore f T or tapping which is you
could say, is a cousin ofya. They're using light right and left
hemisphere of the brain. And whatI make it real simple, what it
(21:23):
does is causing an electrical storm andthe brain. Okay, to break that
that that trauma is like a closedloop and it keeps me circulating. See,
so a lot of this stuff comesfrom trauma. Also, you know,
it comes from low self esteem. It comes from a lot of different
avenues. So you have to addresspeople comprehensively, holistically. You'll have to
(21:49):
use a wholeness approach. Okay, sometimes things work, sometimes they work for
a little well, sometimes they don'twork. So you got to keep knocking
on doors until somebody answers. Andyou always tell people, don't give up
to the mercal average. But youhave to change the way you think,
okay, and you have to practicethat because you got an old tape running
(22:11):
that tells you everything what you needto do, when not to do.
And look at that tape and seewhat kind of success have you had with
that and what does it bring youto? Does it make you happy?
Okay? If it doesn't, thenyou got to change it. Yeah,
John, could you tell us briefand I'm laughing because I've read your book
(22:34):
and hard to say this and ashort amount of time. But turning three
three hundred bucks to forty five milliondollar empire, how'd you do that?
I don't know. Well, youknow, and even today, treatment hasn't
(22:55):
changed in seventy years. We keepdoing the same thing over and over again,
expecting different results. It's only afive to eight to ten percent recovery
rate. Yeah, okay, we'renot looking at all the things we talked
about, our whole body approach, find approach we're using. You know,
I know cognitive therapy works really nice, but there's other therapies that work better.
(23:21):
Yes, you see, I lookat top therapy deals with the software
of the brain. Psychedelics E MD R NLP. They deal with the
hard drive. It's the hard drivethat drives to show, not the software.
It's like on your computer. Ifyou raise something on your computer,
(23:42):
it's still on your hard drive. That's why when the FBI come to your
house, they think they don't takethe computer, take the hard drive,
okay, because that's where all theinformation is, you know. And if
before we forget, if people wantto, you know, know more about
me and what I do if theycan go to John the letter J Jordano
(24:03):
dot com and see what we're doingwith this jc's Recovery center that I have
now to get tremendous results. Andhow I turned three hundred dollars with the
forty five million is the same whatI'm doing now. Okay, I took
modalities that people weren't looking at andmy treatment sent at G and G Holistic
(24:26):
Addiction Treatment Program. Okay, westarted with three hundred. We had one
employee that was me. Then Igot my partner, my friend, and
I made him my partner. Andhe says to me, he goes,
I wasn't a business person back then. You know, I just love doing
the work. So he says tome, all right, let me see
your books. I said, whatbooks? So I don't have any books.
(24:48):
He said, well, how doyou know who pays you? They
pay me. I put the moneyin my pocket. They pay me.
He said, they're addicts. They'renot going to pay you. Are you
crazy? So I said, well, is that an observation of a statement?
Says you know? Bottom line isis that he took over the business
part. Then we had his soncame in who knew about computers and together
(25:10):
because it's always a team. It'snot the John Show. I'm just going
to tell you that right now.Wasn't John that made this. You know,
three hundred and forty five men.It was a team of us and
we each had our you know, our job. It was my ideas and
I did the branding. Gerald didthe marketing. Jerry did the business.
(25:30):
Okay, So what happened was Idid. I brought in Hyperberic Medicine.
This is over twenty years ago.We tested the gut with them. We
did nutrient testing, we did lightand sound therapy, we did aroma therapy,
we did acupuncture. We then lymphaticlymphatic massage to get the drugs out
(25:51):
of the body on the cellular levellevel. We did colonics, We did
after careful life. We did heavymetal testing. We detox people from heavy
metals. We did home run replacementbecause low test. We found eighty five
percent of our clients we had lowtestostero. So we did things that nobody
(26:15):
was doing. And then I wasinvolved with doctor Mash and we used to
take the ivy Gan clients back tomy clinic, and you know, we
had a sixty two bed. Eventuallyinpatient facility. We winded up with seven
buildings, one hundred and forty sevenemployees. How that happened, God was
involved, because I have no clue. We just kept doing the work.
(26:37):
We didn't chase the money. Wechased recovery. And if you focus on
helping people and focus on your business, of course they have to have a
balance, okay, But we weremore about helping people than more about the
money. Okay. Unfortunately some ofthese places today it's all about the money.
(26:57):
It's not about the client, andI'm not for that. The people
that I get involved with at jc'sRecovery Center, they're for the people,
but they're too much on that side. They get too much and they can
go to business the way they weredoing things, so I had to bring
him back. Okay. We werepaying for food, we were paying for
(27:18):
housing, and you get one hundredand ten dollars a day. I mean,
it doesn't work out very well.So anyway, that's how I grew
it. Everybody used to laugh atme. Go to Jordana, will give
you a vitamin and you'll cure you. That's not what I was saying.
We were a twelve step program andwe had the faith based track. You
(27:45):
know, I always trained my staff. I send them all to go get
the MBR training, and then Iredeveloped the m v R. I call
it TRT TRAMLA released technique. Iate it NLP. I added hypnotherapy and
holotropic breathing to the EMBA, andI believe in combining things that support each
other, and it works a lotbetter than the regular MBR. Yeah.
(28:08):
John, one of the things thatI hear you saying about taking the three
hundred bucks to forty five million isthat you didn't do it alone, and
that you reached out and you askedfor help for many other people. Yeah,
you gotta know where you begin andwhere you end. Now. I
learned the business part. I'm notwilling, I'll be honest with you.
(28:30):
I didn't like that part. Ijust liked doing groups and individuals and designing
the program. And my friend Jerry, unfortunately he got cancer in his throat
and then he got cancer in hiskidney, and then he got a stroke
and he was gone for forty ahalf years before we sold. And what
had happened was I was forced totake his position also, so I was
(28:52):
running the whole treatment center. Okay, doing all the branding, doing all
the lecturing, doing all the otherstuff, plus business part. Very difficult,
but I had a good team ofemployees that helped tremendously. So Gerald
did the marketing with the Internet. That was his job. So you know,
(29:15):
my partner, Wan Gerald, wantedto sell. I didn't want to
sell, but that's what we did. So we had an offer for twenty
one million. Now we were takenin thirty six to forty million a year
in a revenue. And I saidno. And then one of our guys
that worked for us said, listen, I have somebody that's interested. I
(29:37):
says, okay, So I said, tem I want forty five million.
Don't bother calling me. But hecalled me, and long story short,
we got forty five million. Wow. And but we actually sold to the
wrong guy. We didn't realize heclosed the place in three years. Oh
we didn't. He showed one faceand was another face and otherwise I went
(30:02):
and gave my baby to somebody whowasn't the right person. But that's what
wind up happening. And anyway,he destroyed the whole company. He cut
the staff in half. Well,we overstaffed. Yeah, we had a
little bit overstaff. But we wantedto do good treatment, you know,
so we made a little less money. I mean I was money you want
(30:22):
to make. We're making tons ofmoney, Okay. To me, I
was always broke and homeless. Iwas homeless when I started my journey after
recovery. Wow, when I startedmy because I had nothing. My wife,
the guy got divorced, she cutthe house, she got the car,
got the kids, and I didn'thave anything. So that was my
(30:44):
beginning of my journey in recovery. And well, you read the book,
so you know what happened to meand all this stuff. So that's life.
The kid from the South Bronx endedup homeless and then ultimately building a
forty five million dollar recovery center.Absolutely extraordinary. And John is just like
(31:07):
I said, John is just scratchingthe surface with many just all the different
things he's done, and I love. Well, let me ask you this.
We just a minute left. What'ssome last words of wisdom? John?
You're you're going to be turning seventyeight years old. You've done extraordinary
(31:30):
things in your life coming from beinga kid from the South Bronx, being
homeless. What is some last wordsof wisdom you could say say to someone
that is really struggling with sex, porn addiction or any type of addiction,
never give up, get off yourass and go get help. Sorry for
(31:52):
