Speaker 1 (00:17):
Hello, and welcome to Psychic Teachers. I'm your host, step
Bowen with a new installment of my Wisdom from Dead episodes.
So if it's safe and comfortable for you to do so,
sit back, drop your shoulders, take a deep breath, and
close your eyes. If you can't close your eyes, at

(00:38):
least drop your shoulders and take a deep breath. So
as you know, if you've listened to one episode or
a zillion episodes of Psychic Teachers podcast, you know that
Samantha and I close the episode every time with these words.
Samantha says, remember to be the light for yourself and others,

(01:01):
and I respond, take care everyone. I assume we all
have our individual notion of what it means to be
the light, and most of us try really try to
embody that phrase and live it. But what does it
mean really to be the light? I've given this a

(01:23):
lot of thought, y'all, and pondering that question has sent
me down a physics rabbit hole. Now hang on, stay
with me. I promise this rabbit hole is not terribly deep.
So what is light really? I mean the science of light?
And how do we be the light? So come with

(01:45):
me now, as I explore the answers to this question.
They may not be your answers, but I invite you
to consider them. So Wikipedia defines light this way. In physics,
the term light may refer more broadly to electromagnetic radiation

(02:05):
of any wavelength, whether visible or not. In this sense,
gamma rays, X rays, microwaves, and radio waves are also light.
The primary properties of light are intensity, propagation, direction, frequency
or wavelength spectrum, and polarization. Its speed in a vacuum

(02:30):
is one of the fundamental constants of nature. End quote. Huh,
what in the world did I just rattle off? Well, basically,
there is light that we can see and light we
can't see. But all light moves at the same speed

(02:50):
and in a vacuum anyway, And while we really can't
see light with the naked eye, light is what allows
us to see everything else. And the gift of light
was one of the earliest gifts given to beings on earth,
according to the Judaic Christian tradition. But we, most of

(03:13):
us anyway, don't really think about light in scientific terms
all the time, but rather in metaphysical terms. We think
of light as something entirely different. We think of light
as a concept of sharing kindness, love, peacefulness, generosity, inspiration,

(03:37):
and other positive aspects of being. But do we share
those qualities with ourselves as well as with others? Samantha's
weekly phrase, be the light for yourself isn't said without
deep consideration. We must be our own light. We must

(03:59):
guide our own path, make our own decisions and choices
about how we see ourselves. Living in the light. Merlin, Merlin,
the Magician in Lady Mary Stuart's book The Hollow Hills,
which is the second book in her Arthurian Legend series,

(04:19):
says live in the light and let the shadows fall
where they will. Now what Merlin means by this, I
believe is that we must choose our values, our very
way of being in the world, and we must trust
that we will be guided to our truths. We must
stand in a place of conviction of what is right

(04:42):
and honest for ourselves, and then how do we be
the light for others? That phrase always makes me think
of one of my two favorite keys in to Row.
In the traditional Waite Smith deck, the hermit is portrayed
as an old man cloaked in a gray robe, a

(05:06):
staff in one hand and a lantern in the other
he stands against a gray background on a snow covered mountaintop.
So the gray on gray in this key is an
indication of ambiguity. This deceptively simple key, this old man
on a mountaintop with a staff and a lantern, is

(05:29):
filled with deep knowledge. The mountaintop upon which he stands
is the same as the mountains seen in the background
of the fool key, indicating that the pilgrimage upon which
both the hermit and the fool are embarking is an
arduous one, but a pilgrimage that must be taken if

(05:53):
true understanding is to occur. We learn as we journey
through to Row that this is true for us as well.
The light radiating from the lanner that the hermit holds
aloft comes from a six pointed star within the lanner,
reminding us of that age old adage. As above, so below.

(06:18):
This reminds us that whatever is true in the universe
beyond our comprehension is also true within us, and vice versa.
When the six pointed star is depicted as a three
dimensional figure, it comes even more fraught with deeper esoteric meaning,

(06:41):
called a macabre or a mercaba, a star tetrahedron. The
three dimensional star is two interlocking tetrahedrons spinning in opposite directions.
And this star, as we can see it in the
land that the hermit carries, it carries within it the

(07:04):
divine ratio of sacred geometry, and it represents the cosmic
union of mind, body, and spirit. So the light emanating
from the hermit's lantern not only guides our path along
our pilgrimage in our lives, but does so by gently
reminding us that we, within ourselves and with all that is,

(07:30):
are a balance of mind, body and spirit, and that we,
just like the hermit, cannot shine the light to guide
our own path without sharing that light with others. Well,
this is great, but how do we actually do it.
I don't know about you, but there certainly are days

(07:52):
when I don't feel very light filled or believe I
have one feeble ray of light to shine for myself,
let alone for someone else. And then I remember, I
remember that the light that comes from within me is
always there waiting, and I remember that this light is

(08:14):
the same light that flows through all of the cosmos.
I am the light, You are the light. But we
must call forth that light into consciousness. So you can
call that light forth when you smile at someone or

(08:35):
something around you. This morning, I had a conversation with
a rent on the deck and envision showering her with light.
You can call forth this light when you soften your
eyes against someone else's anger and wish them well. You
can call forth light when you breathe deeply and see

(08:59):
and feel nature around you glowing with nurturing light. You
can feel and send out light when you've touched a
tree trunk or breathe in deep, wonderful clean air. You
can call light when you offer up gratitude each morning

(09:21):
and again each evening every day. You can call forth
light when you're able to see that light bearing and
light receiving are all a part of the great gift
giving circle of being in the world. It's really about
consciousness and awareness and consistency in our lives as to

(09:46):
how we perceive our relationship within ourselves and with the
world around us. So recently got a wonderful guest on
our podcast. Her name is beth al Daughter, and we
had such fun discussing her to row work and mine
and how they differed, and so many esoteric topics. We

(10:10):
can't wait to have her on again. But near the
end of the conversation, Samantha mentioned that she knew that
both Beth and I are all grateful Dead fans, so
she asked Beth if she could quote her favorite line
from a Dead song. And I knew before Beth opened
her mouth what she was gonna say, and I mouthed

(10:33):
the words along with her silently. The song is Scarlet Pegonias,
written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. And here's the
line that Beth quoted. Once in a while, you get
shown the light in the strangest of places if you'll
look at it right. And that's the point to be

(10:54):
aware always. The light is always there, sometimes in places
we may never expect to find it. We have to
look for it. Trust that that light is always there,
both within you and without you. Always, and once in
a while, you get shown the light in the strangest

(11:17):
of places if you look at it right. Thank you
