He believes that there were more positives to take away from the loss than negatives, admits that he doesn’t really know what to do with Xavien Howard right now with the injuries the team has at that position, and would like to see the Colts get Josh Downs more involved in the pass game.

(27:32-41:52) – Indiana Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith joins Jake Query on Pacers media day to reveal how he recovered in the off-season from the long season, accesses how the team will replace the leadership of Myles Turner and Tyrese Haliburton, discusses the Turner fallout, and comments on what to expect from the team stylistically without Haliburton this season.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Monday, one o'clock. You know what that means. Mike Chapell,
CBS four and WXI in Fox fifty nine to break
down what happened with the Colts, and again I'll summarize
what I said earlier and then we'll let Chap kind
of opine from there. I know, it was a disappointing
game yesterday the Colts. Now though three and one. You

(00:20):
take the good with that, because if I would have
told anybody back in early August the Colts are going
to be three and one through the first four games,
all of you would have taken that. And you know,
eight days a week to quote the Beatles and Ady
Mitchell yesterday was Yes, he is the target that we're
going to talk the most about, but there were a
lot of other things that did them in. You know,

(00:41):
eleven penalties did him in. The ten men on the
field did him in. The depleted secondary did them in.
And it's easy to say that that all falls on
the fault of eighty Mitchell, but at some point it
becomes the fault of those that continue to tell us
to be patient with him. And we knew that immaturity
and lack of focus were the reasons that he was

(01:03):
the eleventh receiver taken in the year that he was selected,
and that's the reason why we've had to wait and
wait and wait. Was just that maturity issue. Now I'm
not saying he's a bad guy, but as a player,
still an immature guy. But we'll see how he bounces
back from it. Mike Chappell joining us now on the program.
Chap your overall I guess thoughts are observations from yesterday

(01:24):
or a storyline perhaps that was overshadowed by Ady Mitchell.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Well, one quick takeaway is I'm really kind of encouraged
because I think there was some question about whether these
guys were legit. I really kind of think that, Well,
you know, Denver gave you the game, and you played
a crappy Miami team and Tennessee's the worst team in
the league that may not win a game. The Rams

(01:51):
are good, the Rams are very good, right, and you
just should have won the game. Should have would have
could it? All that kind of stuff. So I'm encouraged
by the fact that I think these guys are legit.
I really do. And chibah own Lord Liven, I thought
these guys could start six and two. I really did

(02:11):
if they got confident quarterback play, and they've gotten more
than that, so I'm not totally shocked. Having said that,
My goodness, that's the game was there for you, and
there were probably I don't know, five or six things.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
That went wrong. There's no downplaying.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Mitchell's screw ups. It's fourteen points. It's fourteen points, and
I don't know how to explain. It's funny. Last year
in December, I think it was we're talking with Jonathan
Taylor in Denver, maybe November. I came. What it was December,
I think, and I'm thinking, you know, I've seen I've

(02:53):
been around a long time and I haven't seen that
in forever. And now yesterday's thinking, I mean, I haven't
seen that sense, I don't know December, so you just
you just can't do that. And Jonathan Taylor wasn't celebrating.
He just dropped the football eighty Mitchell I think was

(03:13):
show Bolten was gonna put the ball out with his
right hand and all that. Yeah, it's one of those
like act like you've been there before. Well in the
NFL he hasn't been so uh. And then the holding
on Taylor we had like the third or fourth, third
straight game of Taylor just doing something ridiculously brilliant and

(03:33):
it gets called back because Mitchell sort of tackled the
guy on the perimeter. So that's fourteen points. And Taylor's
touchdown was with like two minutes to play, and yeah,
the Rams might have tied up. I don't know so,
but dam like you, like you said, somebody tell me
why you've got Xavian Howard.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
On Poka tua I.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
The object is to take away the other team's best player,
the other team's best players in the kua and you
put Xavier Howard on him, and he hasn't played well
since he's been here.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
You know.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
I guess if they put Mooney Ward.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
On on on Nakula.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Then Devonte Adams goes off. But I would risk that,
so I and then ten minutes on the field, what
are you doing?

Speaker 3 (04:22):
What's that about?

Speaker 2 (04:24):
So it was just incredible mistakes and you're still right there.
I'm curious to how they they react with two things
with with ad Mitchell is you know, hopefully they get
pierced back this week and and that will diminish more

(04:44):
of eight sides. But you're right, they say, bear with us.
This kid's gonna be a great place. He's great talent.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
The catch was incredible, it looked there has never let
let me tell you something, you remember Bo Jackson? Right, sure,
I've always felt like Bo Jackson. And probably the most
famous game that Bo Jackson played in was that Monday
night game against the Raid against the Seahawks in Seattle
when he was with the Raiders and he ran over

(05:11):
the bas But the other play in that game is
the one where he turns the corner and he takes
off down the sideline and he's running so fast he
goes right into the tunnel.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
Right.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I've always said that that perfectly encapsulated him because just
when you realized what you had seen before your very eyes,
he disappeared. And it was the perfect synopsis of a
player's career in one play. That might have been the
perfect synopsis of Ady Mitchell because we were we saw
why we've been told to be so patient, and then
we saw why we've had to be patient because he

(05:42):
made a knucklehead play all in one fell swoop, right.
I mean, it was the perfect synopsis. The question for
me becomes, how does he respond? How does he respond?
And do we know? Do we have enough body of
work to this point to say from a mental standpoint
that that might be the him.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
No we don't. I mean, no, we don't. We don't,
and I I I understand your question. I'm more curious
how the team responds to it. You know, roster spots
are so you know, premium. And I'm not saying you
check the guy. I'm not saying that at all, but

(06:21):
but it's this is a game of trust and you
have to And they said all the right things after
the game, we have faith and trust, and yet he
had it well based on what I mean, you know,
based on what uh And I'm going to try not
to pilon him too much, but but this is big
boy football. It's it's your profession, and they preach accountability.

(06:45):
That that's what the change stick says.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Well it starts with me. Okay, but but you're.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Not out there dropping the ball at the one yard line.
You're not out there getting roasted every play by Nikua.
So I I accounabilly would would be to find somebody
other than Xavian Howard to play at corner. I don't
think they get Kinny Moore back this week, and then
even less sie Alan Pierce misses another game. He's never

(07:12):
missed two games of the congession. But did you see
more of Ashton Doolan? You just do so, I I
don't know. I'm more curious how the team responds than
I am. I don't know that I expected it from
Xavian Howard. How he responds. He's just he's not playing well, you.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Know, Chap in terms of the way the team responded
to Ady Mitchell yesterday, and I'll start with that response.
I get it, and they said the right things, and
we'll play you know, audio for everybody coming up here
with Daniel Jones Andsire Franklin what they had to say.
But is there a fine line in the NFL between
having a guy's back and coddling a guy?

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Oh we see, yeah, yeah, we've seen that a quarterback
here last couple of years. Yeah, there is. Don't talk
to accountability and then you know, do the old definition
of insanity. So yeah, I think again, this is a
chance for us to see what their accountability level is. Again,

(08:18):
I want to say at two spots, because Zavian Howard
wasn't good yesterday. He just wasn't wasn't good the week
before the week before that, So so yeah, that's a
really good point. And your tolerance level for coddling goes
up with a player's resume and his talent, And right

(08:40):
now a d. Mitchell doesn't have much in the bank.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
To keep saying, well, you know, patient, no, you.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Only play seventeen games. It's a long season.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
It is.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
You play seventeen games, and you know, things even out
against should lost the Denver go on yesterday, so they
sort of even out. But I would hate for.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
These guys in January, the.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Maxine boy, like like last year in Denver, the losing
it in Denver, and it cost him. It cost him.
Uh So I'm I want to see how they deal
with it. I want to see how this team bounces
back against the Raiders who showed you what they can
be yesterday. But this is still a good team. But
you just can't go on and say, will these guys

(09:29):
will come out of this on their own, because that's
you can't you can't bank on that.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
Are we burying the lead though, in the fact that
we're so focused on the eighty Mitchell play. Mike Chaplar
guests from CBS four and WXA and Fox fifty nine,
The Dean of coult Riders. We were so focused on
the Mitchell mistakes that and I agree with you Chap
fundamentally that there were things that were encouraging about that game,
but there were also just such incredible mental errors, like

(09:55):
the eleven penalties and like having only ten men on
the field the most critical play of the game. How
does that happen?

Speaker 2 (10:02):
No question, I don't know. I can't buy them, sort
of said. He said, we had a feeling before the
play that things weren't right, and then he said his
players and his coaches. He pointed into the coaches as well,
they've got coach, they get, they got more coaches, and
then you've got fans. Jake, I mean, they got coaches everywhere,
and somebody is responsible for getting the right guys out there.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Did you say that I have fans? Is that what
you said that I have fans? I said, because because
that would be listen, Chap, your grandson's basketball team at
the Beach Grove y has more coaches than I have fans.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Right well, that would be that that would be the
Mount Vernon wide.

Speaker 5 (10:48):
Now.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
But they've got people that they got people to do that.
I mean to make sure you've got the right the
right people, the right a number of people from crying outlets.
Maybe it wouldn't have mattered because uh, blackman fell down
and you leave that well wide open and running three.
Maybe that the extra player would have been somewhere else
it would have mattered. But that doesn't matter. You got

(11:11):
to have you know, like like Mindam said ten verses eleven.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
You're gonna lose. You're gonna lose, and you.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Just know that when a guy's open like that, Matthew
Stafford is gonna find him. He doesn't, He just hit
him astride. So that's how I say that. There were
so many mistakes from a team that for the first
three games didn't do much wrong, no turnovers, and you
know they had loved penalties against Denver, I think it

(11:38):
was but by and large they'd played pretty clean, and
yesterday was in bud clean. There was pressure on Jones
the second interception, I don't throw it. I guess you
had some timeouts and all that, but I thought he
he would be down my list of worries. Jonathan Taylor
played well, Josh Towns made and key plays. Past protection

(12:02):
was not very good, I thought, with even with two
sacks and dumb doun. You still could have should have
won the game if if Mitchell doesn't mugg the guy
on the on the end and Jonathan Teter gives you
another highlight.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
You know the thing, Chap, that's encouraging because you know,
I know they lost, and I know people want to,
you know, fret and complain, and I get it after
a loss. But the reality is this, now that we've
seen four games, and you're right, Tennessee is terrible. I
mean they're terrible, right, Tennessee and Carolina they're they're awful, right,

(12:38):
two worst teams in the league. But now that we've
seen them go into LA and we're talking about how
the Colts cost themselves, you know, it's like the Rams
didn't beat the Colts. The Colts beat the Colts. And
so when you look at that, you have to be
encouraged because now you start looking at the schedule wondering
where they're going to lose another game. I mean, the

(12:59):
going to LA and on the Chargers is going to
be a big challenge. But coming back and getting the
Raiders and Cardinals at home, I mean, they've got a chance,
to your point, to be five and one, and then
you know, maybe they go five and two. But outside
of that, the schedule is pretty favorable for them. I mean,
this legitimately looks like the in fact, the groundwork is

(13:22):
there for them to be a not just a playoff team,
but a contending playoff team. Am I beat? Am I
too bullish?

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Too early? No? That because again I kind of again
I saw that as a possibility just because so much is.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
On the quarterback.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
It just is. And they've gotten very, very good play
from the quarterback. But had they said that, then you
can't do stupid things around him. And again he was
far from perfect yesterday. But again that's why I say
part of me is encouraged by how they played, just
because they went out there and they had a chance

(14:00):
to win the game they did in the past, I
think the Colt's team might go out there against the
quality Rams team or whatever and just get boat race,
and that wasn't the case. So again I'm encouraged by that.
But then you come back to the bottom line, and
you can't do ten things wrong and beat a good team.

(14:22):
Can't do it. Kevin Bowden made a good point was
at the end of the first half where the Sans
just piss him at the four yard line and the
Rams go ninety six yards at the end of the half. Yep,
that's you just can't do that. So but they still
held them to twenty until the late touchdown. So again,

(14:44):
very very a lot of reasons to be encouraged. But
if you think you can go out there and do
that kind of stuff week after a week, you're delusional.
Chat free turnovers, get your beat.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
The issue at defensive backfield, in the defensive backfield, you know,
and Xavier and Howard to your point, I'd like, you know,
it would be easy to throw the Colts under the
bus there and say what in the world are they doing?
But it's not necessarily their fault. I mean, if there's
something to be to give them a pass, I guess
if you will, it's the fact that they're having to
play with guys in those positions that weren't even on

(15:17):
the roster when training camp began because of attrition. Can
you literally limp your way in waiting for Jalen Jones
Kenny Moore to come back? Or are they in the
situation where they're going to have to start scanning the
free agent wires again?

Speaker 2 (15:30):
Well, free agent wires, that's that's where you got Jamien Howard.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
That's right, but I mean right, no.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
I I if I'm not mistaken. I think Jalen Jones
as l's worked come off this week now. Whether he's
read or not, I don't know.

Speaker 6 (15:49):
Kenny, and he says he's not one more week, right, yeah,
because that was week one, right, Chap, so he had
to have to miss.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
Yeah, you're right, you're right.

Speaker 7 (15:56):
Two.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Yeah, he's got one, He's got one more week, so
Clay Jonathan Edwards some more.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Most teams aren't going to have au DeVante Adams combination again.
I just come back that Bill Belichick was great about
taking again. He would take a guy away, Marvin Edrian, Reggie,
somebody and make somebody else beat you. I would rather
you make DeVante Adams beat me. And he's a great,

(16:26):
great player. Then Nakua had one hundred and seventy yards
career high and his third career high, if you remember,
came as a rookie against the coach when he had
won sixty three and they decided not to cover him
in overtime. So I just make somebody else beat you,
Make somebody the Nico Collins beach you and I just

(16:49):
will talk to lou And tomorrow and I just want
to understand why you continually put Xavian Howard on their
best player. The nine yard touchdown, they put Howard on him.
I don't get it.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
I just don't get it.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
I realized I'm not a football savant, but I just
want somebody else to beat me, and that's not what
happened yesterday.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
Mike Chapel, our guest, chap let's go to this when
you look at you know again we've nitpicked the negatives here, right,
Let's go with three positives. You talked about Jonathan Taylor,
but aside from that, I'll start with Daniel Jones. I
thought yesterday, and you tell me if you agree with this.

(17:37):
I was very interested to see how he would respond
to his first pick, and obviously he threw two yesterday.
But we've seen quarterbacks where the wheels can kind of
come off, especially early in a game, in that situation
and in a hostile environment. I thought he was pretty

(17:57):
poised and over the course of the game actually like
that Mitchell throw. He put the ball at times where
it needed to be. I thought he was impressive yesterday.
But am I too kind?

Speaker 2 (18:08):
No? And again, we've we've kind of had lower standards
on what we thought what we think efficient play is.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
I thought he was fine. I just you know, he underthrows.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Who was what was Mitchell on the first one deep
for the interception. If he lays it out there, it's
probably a long game. I thought he played fine. He
played winning football. The interception at the end. He got
too too greedy, too soon, I thought. But made some
great plays at Josh downs, a couple of great throws

(18:39):
to Tyler Roar and that kid.

Speaker 4 (18:41):
That kid.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Uh, he just keep finding different ways to use him,
which we knew they would, you know, the wildcat and
the and then the full back with the touchdown and
they hit their own version of the tousch bush to
get him in. So I thought Jones played fine. Again,
if you want to list ten things that went wrong,
he's number ten. Which again that's why I say it's

(19:05):
encouraging because I think you're right. A lot of a
lot of people are waiting for the wheels to come
off and say, oh, that's why it didn't go right.
And in the in New York, that's why the Giants
got rid of him, and we haven't seen that. Uh,
And I don't think we're gonna see some of the
mistakes moving forward. The Bernard Ryman had a bad game,

(19:29):
holding penalties in the red zone and and all that.
We're not you know, I'm still not sure what Tyler
Warren did on his past interference.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
I need to see that again. We're not going to
see a lot of that.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Moving Forward're not gonna see the loving penalties moving forward.
So I thought, if I thought the wheels weren't gonna
come off, yesterday was a great day for that to
happen with Jones, and it did not happen.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
You know what's funny, Chap. I mean, you know you've
been covering the NFL since it came to Indianapolis. It
seems to me like offensive line, and you tell me
if I'm wrong here, but it seems to me like,
in particular, left tackle is the position where even the

(20:11):
very best to play the position just have an occasional
off day, Like it just is one of those I
think it's a timing position, and you know you have
quarterbacks gonna have an off day, sure, but it seems
like the very best of tackles or guards that we
have seen come through this town, even the very best

(20:32):
of them have games where just like psychologically, they're just
off and their timing is just off for the day,
and then the next week they kind of get back
on the horse again. That seemed to be the case
yesterday with Ryman.

Speaker 4 (20:45):
Did it not?

Speaker 2 (20:47):
I hope so it again.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
I wish I was home. I go look at my notes.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
I thought he missed part of the day of practice
last week with an illness, and now whether he's been
fighting something, I don't know. The Rams have a really
good front seven. They really do got There was one
play that Jared Vers just ran over borderline holy smokes.
But but you know, if you're not on top of

(21:11):
your game, yell exposure, they simply will because they've got
guys that everybody's got guys that.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
Are that good.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
And it's sort of the unfair nature. But the reality
of the business is if if a left tackle has
three bad plays, he has a bad game, right and
if the right end had three good plays and forty
seven terrible plays, he's an all pro. H So an
alignment just can't afford to have bad plays. I think

(21:41):
Bernio bounce back, he's he's he's been okay, not not
as good as he's been, but he's he's not high
on my list of words either.

Speaker 1 (21:49):
You know, it's interesting when Mike Hilton had to play,
you know, when when the Rams had the fumble and
immediately they're like, Mike Hilton comes flashing in and makes
a play, and I'm like, you know, so he kind
of got credit for it, and he was in the
right place to cause a disruption, but it almost in
the replay You're like, no, I think actually there was

(22:09):
he's spinning out of the play and the fumble happens,
and so Hilton kind of got credit there, but you
got to be in position. I guess he was. You know,
he was in the right spot. But my point being,
there are some guys that you can put into situation
like Hilton where you just pick him up and you
put him in there and he's familiar with the defense
and he's able to at least be in position, and

(22:32):
then others like Howard that it just seems like the
expiration date has come.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
Well in again, he didn't play last year and he
had that was at the foot injury in twenty three
with Miami, and he sort of made it sound like
that he didn't play last year. It wasn't because of
the foot, it was because of situations. But he didn't
play last year. I mean it's it's if a guy
is healthy enough, then at that position, somebody's gonna give

(23:00):
a chance. They just aren't, So something went on there.
All I know is that he's not been what they thought.
And just because he and Lou have a history, okay,
so what you know that's got an expiration Nick too.
And again I'm really curious to hear what Lou has
to say yes tomorrow or late tomorrow when he talks

(23:21):
with the media, because it's kind of like the old
Dais and Lucy. You know, you got some explaining to dude.
Just because it was a strange game defensive win chap.

Speaker 8 (23:31):
I thought with no Alec Pierce that there was baby
the potential to get Josh Downs going. He plays thirty
eight of the sixty one snaps, has four catches for
twenty four yards. Is there something going on that we
don't know? I understand Tyler Warren takes away a lot
of the things that you know, Josh Downs likes to do,
but they just seemingly have not been able to get
him going. And I think yesterday was the lowest snapcount

(23:52):
of the season. Despite no Alan Krusher downs.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
No Tyler Warton, no Tyler Warren, takes away a lot
of Josh downs. He does he does. Having said that,
Josh Downs needs to be more involved, and that's why
Alec Pierce is sort of the ideal guy to be
in this receiver rotation, because I think it's an amazing
thing about Alec Pears is how unselfish externally he is.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
Now he may boil.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
Inside, but he seems like he's just fine getting four
targets and three catches because he's gonna make a couple
of big plays, and I think that's very rare for
a receiver, it really is. But they need to get
Downs again. The fact that people need to remember Josh
Downs had had more catches in his first two years

(24:41):
than any player in franchise history, and this franchise has
had some pretty good receivers, so they need to get
in more involved. He's the guy that I think has
to be frustrated by his his lack of involvement. But
it's hard to do that when you're three and one
and whenever they go to him, it's like thirty and

(25:01):
seven and he gets you eight or more. Uh, he's
the one that they need to find more targets.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
But dog gone.

Speaker 2 (25:10):
I think a lot of us talked in the offseason
that Tyler Warren's going to get a lot of that stuff,
and there are you know, they put Michael Pittman's off
to a good start and so jt. So if there
are only so many targets in a game, I don't
think they want to throw the ball forty times a
game or whatever. What did Jones with the twenty three

(25:32):
or thirty four? That's probably a few too many for them.
But yeah, Josh Stawns is a guy that they've got
to find a way to get more involved.

Speaker 4 (25:40):
I agree with that.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
You know.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
The again, the funny thing about it, to put a
tie on all of the chap is the fact that
they're three and one. And if I would have told
you when I was handing you a Beatles shirt back
at camp that they were going to start out three
and one and that we would be nitpicking like two
boneheaded plays to cost that, you would have said, sign
me up all day long, right, sign me up all

(26:03):
day long for that good question.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
It's all about you know. They always break down the
season into quarters without screwy seventeenth game. You're three and one.
I mean you're telling me you wouldn't take that back
in August like you said you would.

Speaker 5 (26:17):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
I would much rather be three and one, no one.
I've got things to fix than being oh and for
and say, man, do how do we fix this? Because
the things that were messed up yesterday are fixable.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
I I and I'm.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
Curious how they how they go about trying to fix them.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
That's again the next couple of days.

Speaker 3 (26:41):
I want to hear what we get changed stacking later.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
I don't know that he's gonna give us a lot
just because he wants to see the tape, and that's
that's what coaches do. They're not going to really dive
deep into it. I think I think Loue will give
us some insight on what the heck's going on and
how personnel wise. Personnel wise, you're not gonna be able
to address it until you get a couple of these.

Speaker 1 (27:03):
Guys back twenty four of thirty three yesterday Daniel Jones
two sixty two with a touch and two picks, we
will come from Daniel Jones.

Speaker 2 (27:11):
Thirty three patches are okay, I can deal with that. Yeah,
I see John Davin get a few more carries, but
that's just me.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
Taylor seventeen for seventy six. Well, here from Daniel Jones.
We'll let you know what he had to say coming
up in just a couple of minutes. Chap appreciate the time.

Speaker 2 (27:24):
As always, Thank you you guys being well.

Speaker 1 (27:27):
Mike Chapel, CBS four and WXA and Fox fifty nine.
It is Pacers Media Day, meaning that we are on
the cusp of another Pacer season and a guy that
is entering his fourth year in Indiana, he just hit
another three point shot against the New York Knicks. Aaron
Nee Smith joins us on the program aeron how are you?

Speaker 4 (27:46):
I'm doing good? How you guys doing?

Speaker 1 (27:47):
We are well? Thank you listen. It is and this
is a good thing, you know. It's a good thing
to have the off season be so short because it
means that your regular season went so long. But for you,
I am curious from a player's standpoint, with the way
everything went last year, did and as deep as you
guys got, did it cause for acceleration of let's get going?

(28:10):
Or is the body still needing more time?

Speaker 4 (28:15):
Actually?

Speaker 5 (28:16):
I feel like I took the proper amount of time
off like normally I take, like the amount of normal
time I take off on the summer. I just added
a week to it, just since we played so far
into the season. And then when I started hooping again
and working out again, I just scramped it up a
little bit quicker than normal.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
So it all worked.

Speaker 1 (28:32):
Out, you know, it was it was such a magical
run and you know everything that went with it, and
then obviously the way it ended with you know, just
and that Game seven will replay that in our heads
for a long time and wondering of the what ifs.
But from a player's standpoint, I'm curious, what is the

(28:52):
mindset now of understanding the excitement that comes with that,
but also the reality of what the year is ahead,
and then waiting of course to have kind of everything
back in the arsenal.

Speaker 4 (29:05):
Uh, you got to turn the page. You know, it's
a brand new season.

Speaker 5 (29:09):
You know there's gonna be a new champion crown at
the end of this year, and you know you gotta
start working from that today. It all starts tomorrow and
training camp and you know you can just all you
could take is really.

Speaker 7 (29:20):
The lessons you learned from last.

Speaker 5 (29:22):
Season, you know, the trials and tribulations, to ups and
downs and try and have a better start this year
and you know, get the ground running.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
You know with the you know, obviously with Tyree's out
for the year and Miles now in Milwaukee, does does
your role change in terms of obviously we know what
your position is and you know the starting situation, but
in terms of what you need to bring do you
have to diversify your game at all?

Speaker 5 (29:49):
Yeah, everybody's got to take a little step up. Everybody's
going to do a little bit more, but it's going
to be done by committee. You know, five people on
the court at one time, so everybody's gonna have to
take a little step up in their production and what's
asking them. But you know we're all getting done.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
Who what teammate is the one that most intrigues you
in terms of what you might see from them this year?

Speaker 5 (30:12):
I believe I think Jerris Jaris Walker has a real
chance to take a leap this year.

Speaker 7 (30:15):
And you know, he has all the tools.

Speaker 5 (30:17):
And I talked to him about you know, what he
did this summer and how much he worked and how
much he prepared for this season.

Speaker 7 (30:23):
I think he's ready for the challenge as ahead of him.

Speaker 1 (30:25):
Aaron Nesmith is our guest as the pacers resume, and
we'll get underway, get everything going here before we know it.
And with that, Aaron, when you talk about Jaris Walker,
you know your situation being a guy that was in Boston,
got you know, buried a little bit there, and then
as soon as you got your chance here you really

(30:46):
did flourish. What sort of things can you tell young
players about that and about seizing that opportunity? And are
you the type that would go to them and say, hey,
let me tell you what I went through and what
worked for me.

Speaker 5 (30:59):
Yeah, I mean him, man, when he first got here,
I told him he was in a similar situation I
was in Boston, just guys in front of him, not
a big opportunity to play. But always stay ready, to
be ready because you never know when your name is
going to be called. And whenever you get your opportunity.

Speaker 7 (31:15):
You know, people say, look is.

Speaker 5 (31:17):
When preparation meets opportunity. And I believe he's prepared for
it properly and he's going to be ready.

Speaker 1 (31:22):
By the way, do you believe in the zone like
when people say that athletes get in the zone and
all of a sudden, You remember Jordan said, like the
rim becomes like a big old bucket, right, do you
believe in the zone?

Speaker 4 (31:35):
Oh?

Speaker 7 (31:35):
Yeah, that's real. Called it like the flow state.

Speaker 1 (31:38):
Okay, so the flow state is what it's known as. Now, okay,
Now the reason I ask and I think that with
everything that took place in all of the excitement of
the miraculous finishes that you guys had and getting to
the finals and all of that, historically, I worry that
perhaps we're going to forget about being in the flow
state like you were against New York where you you

(32:00):
in that zone in that game?

Speaker 5 (32:03):
Oh yeah, there's nothing like that. That's that's I always say.
You know, all the work you put in the early mornings,
every left, every extra shot you take after practice, before practice,
it's for those moments, like you do all of that
so that when you do enter that state, it's just
all rhythm. You lean on the work that you put
in and it just literally feels like you're floating. You're

(32:25):
just vibing.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
Well, you were, I no question about it, right, And
you know do you You're an interesting one to me
erin because your three point shot it almost seems like
sometimes you're more in that flow state, if you will,
when it's accelerated, and that you know, wide receivers often
say in football that the hardest pass to catch is

(32:48):
the one where they're wide open. Is the same thing
true as an outside shooter? It is it more a
rhythm thing if you're wide open and you've got time
to square up, does it almost then become more of.

Speaker 7 (33:00):
A challenge.

Speaker 5 (33:02):
A little bit because you have more time to think
you're not you know, you're not in the rhythm of
your jump shot. And I think, you know, all my life,
I've always been such a great shooter that nobody leaves
me open and so more times and I'm more used
to having somebody sprint at me full speed trying to
keep me from.

Speaker 7 (33:20):
Shooting the ball post just letting me shoot it so
I see it more.

Speaker 1 (33:25):
By the way, were you surprised by the Miles Turner decision?

Speaker 7 (33:30):
I was.

Speaker 1 (33:32):
Did you guys speak to him? I mean, is he
you know, how does that work in professional sports? Your teammates,
but I assume you're also friends, So how does that
work once that all goes down?

Speaker 4 (33:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (33:45):
He sent, you know, the mentions to the group chat
about his decision and why he made it, and you know,
I'm I'm also I'm just the type of guy that
you know, I wish him nothing but the best. He
did well, he thought it was right for him and
his family, and we'll see him when he played Milwaukee.
You know, I'll give him a big hug at half court.
But you know, once the game starts, you know.

Speaker 4 (34:07):
I gotta win the game.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
Did he say what the reason was?

Speaker 7 (34:11):
That's him, that's for him, that's for him to speak on.

Speaker 1 (34:14):
See, I was in the flow state there. I had
to ask right right, gotta, hey, what did you do
in the off season? Because for fans, you know, I
think we all basked in the glory of what the
run was, but then there was also the what could
have been?

Speaker 4 (34:34):
Right?

Speaker 1 (34:35):
But for you guys, as players, what did you do
to kind of get away, clear your head, reset the
table in the off season?

Speaker 5 (34:42):
You know, I think I spend proper amount of time
reflecting on, you know, what we just did and what
just happened. And I tried to turn the page as
quickly as possible. At the same time, so I tried
to have fun and you know, get my mind off
the loss. And but at the same I appreciate it
and understand what we did was special for our city,

(35:04):
you know, for each of us as an individual. We
just accomplished so many different things this year. And you know,
I've had so many people come up to me and
just say, You've made me an NBA fan again. And
so it's a little things like that that kind of,
you know, make me feel really good about how far
we made it.

Speaker 1 (35:21):
You know, when they had your the image of you
on the Arts Garden down here downtown with the huge
thing that said finals and like, you know, a four
story high photo of yourself, I would have like taken
two hundred and fifty pictures of that if it were me.
Did you do that?

Speaker 5 (35:36):
No, I'm sure my family did, though I kept I
try to bookmark as many things as I can, just
because I know later in life I'm officely gonna want
to look back at them, but I let my family
do all the picture take it.

Speaker 1 (35:49):
Have you gotten a chance to enjoy or watch the
Fever run I have.

Speaker 7 (35:54):
I have.

Speaker 4 (35:55):
I haven't been able to make it to a game yet,
but I have been keeping up.

Speaker 1 (35:59):
Do you guys feed off one another? You know, I
realize your seasons are different obviously, but and your facilities
will soon be completely different. But do you get a
chance to kind of interact with one another or you know,
at different events things representing the franchise.

Speaker 5 (36:14):
Times sometimes not too much, just because we said our
teams are, you know, at different times, and a lot
of times during our season they're playing overseas or they're
playing in the different leagues and such, so they're not
always around. But there's always, like usually this period right here,
there's always a gap and where we'll do events together,
we'll see each other and they always come to our games,

(36:35):
you know, we go to their games, so we do.

Speaker 7 (36:37):
We do mix it up a good bit.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
And lastly, you're an interesting one because you grew up
in South Carolina. Aaron Ne Smith our guest. When you
were a kid growing up, did you have an NFL team?
Would it have been the Atlanta Falcons or.

Speaker 5 (36:48):
Carolina Unfortunately, as of right now it's the Carolina Manthers.
I'll never slitted up, but yeah, it's real dark for us, right.

Speaker 1 (36:58):
I would say yes, in fact, that would be the case.

Speaker 6 (37:01):
Stety and you guys obviously we've talked about I've lost
Miles Turner no, Tyre's Halliburton for you guys this year,
who has to step up in the leadership role because
those are those were two big voices for you guys
throughout the course the last season.

Speaker 5 (37:14):
Yeah, I mean, we're gonna have to do it by committee,
and I think everybody in here understands what's going to
be asked to them.

Speaker 7 (37:19):
Everybody in here understands that we're everybody's got to.

Speaker 4 (37:22):
Do a little bit more.

Speaker 5 (37:23):
And I think everybody as much as like we as
far as it made it and we came up short.
I think the culmination of Tyrisks being out and Miles leaving,
everybody had.

Speaker 7 (37:34):
Proper motivation this summer, eat to work and to get better.
And I think we have a.

Speaker 5 (37:40):
Pretty special group of guys to where we use different things.
It's fuel and motivation, and I think those those the
combination of both of those happening so close to each other,
like we're.

Speaker 7 (37:50):
Able to turn the page on the loss really quickly
and get to work.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
Will it be an adjustment in terms of stylistically, because
I think you know, it's been stated obviously that you
guys will not be playing as fast now at least
for this season, and maybe you do go a little
bit more half court set or ISO set. Will that
be an adjustment?

Speaker 5 (38:10):
I think, I mean, we're gonna play the same way
we've been playing, where you're gonna have to continue to
do that as a team, and you know, one man
are our main guys out, but we've been doing it.

Speaker 7 (38:19):
For so long that we we can't.

Speaker 5 (38:22):
We don't know any other way to play except for
fast picking up full court and you know, being a pest.
So we're gonna do it again.

Speaker 1 (38:29):
It is kind of weird though, Like for me, it
just aaron like I was. It was so much fun
and I'm not saying it's not gonna be this year,
and I think that the Pacers are going to be
probably better than people are giving credit, right But but
at the same time, I have to keep reminding myself
that the roster will look different for the interim than
it did a year ago. You are one of those

(38:50):
players on that roster, do you have to also remind
yourself of that.

Speaker 5 (38:56):
I've kind of, I mean, I've had to remind myself
it's gonna look a little different, you know, to start
the season. And I think we, like, especially in training camp,
like we're gonna have to relearn a couple of things
and recommit to a couple of things. And I think
once we get past that hurdle, it'll be easy flowing again.
But there will be a learning curve obviously, and there's

(39:18):
gonna be ups and downs, because you know, we're so
used to playing a certain way and with Tyree's being down, like,
we're gonna have to learn different things.

Speaker 4 (39:26):
So you know, all that will come with time and repetition.

Speaker 1 (39:30):
Okay, lastly, so i'd lied, but I said lastly last time.
But we talked to you. The last time I talked
to you, you had mentioned that the most recent book
you had finished was Unbroken, which is a fabulous, fabulous
book about Louise Mperini. I'm curious the last book now
that you read.

Speaker 7 (39:45):
I've actually read.

Speaker 5 (39:46):
I actually read a couple of books, and I read,
oh man, it's like a it's it's like an overthinking book.

Speaker 4 (39:56):
But it was called some like the Keto over thing.
I can't remember what it was called.

Speaker 5 (40:00):
I read that last year. And then I read a
fancy book called uh probably, I don't know why I'm
blanket on it. It's like a three I read three books.
I read four books. I read this overthinking book. I
read one hundred Laws of Power, and then I read
this series.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
For what it's worth. By the way, I'm guilty of
one hundred ways to overthink.

Speaker 7 (40:22):
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (40:24):
That's that sounds like that sounds like my biography, you
know that, right?

Speaker 4 (40:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (40:29):
Aaron Jake ridicules me from time to time on this show,
and one of the reasons why I'm not a big traveler.
I've never traveled outside of the United States. And I
know you like to go to Japan. Did you go
to Japan during the off season? And if you didn't,
did you go somewhere else?

Speaker 4 (40:42):
I went to Costa Rica.

Speaker 7 (40:43):
The book was called Fourth Wing, Fourth.

Speaker 4 (40:45):
Wing, Fourth Wing? Okay, hang on, yeah, but.

Speaker 5 (40:50):
No, I went to Costa Rica this summer by I
went golfmen out there.

Speaker 7 (40:54):
Nice. Nice.

Speaker 1 (40:57):
I've asked you this, perhaps before you grew up in
South Carolina, carol on it or Clemson neither, Well, I
guess Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt having a good day. Actually, listen, I'm
a Clemson football fan, so I can I can relate
to your Carolina panther misery.

Speaker 4 (41:13):
Yep, yeah, so yeah, I was watching uh.

Speaker 5 (41:16):
I was watching the Syracuse game with my guy the
other week and he was he was down bed.

Speaker 1 (41:23):
Was not good. Trust me. They were guilty of overthinking.
Is exactly what happened. Yeah right, they were not in
the flow state. I can tell you right now.

Speaker 7 (41:33):
That's right, drops, that's they're right.

Speaker 1 (41:36):
Aaron listen. I appreciate the time. As always, we look
forward to the season. I think it's going to be
a lot of fun and it's always fun to watch
you man. We would love to have you back on
the program anytime, but we certainly wish you the best
in getting things underway.

Speaker 7 (41:47):
I appreciate it you.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
