Speaker 1 (00:00):
Edgewood. By the way, Sullivan knocked him off on Friday Night,
twenty eight, twenty one. Edgewood now stands at five and
two on the season. We mentioned that because Don Fisher
we've mentioned with him before, his son is the coach
that's done a heck of a job and turning around
that program. And then of course the other program marquee
of the area. And the reason that we have Don
(00:20):
on is the Indiana Hoosiers now in a top ten
matchup College Game Day will be there in Eugene to
take on Oregon in what promises to be the biggest
game in college football. Of Don I don't know about you,
but I mean, obviously it's the biggest game of the week,
biggest game of the year really for Indiana. But like,
I'm ready to go. Let's have him play tomorrow, right,
(00:42):
Let's just get out to Eugene and let's go, right.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, Well, after a bye week, you're always chomping at
the bit to get going again. That's the biggest thing.
And right now, I think everybody kind of feels the
same way. I'd love to see this game play today
or tonight or tomorrow and not have to wait for
another or five days before we get to see it, you.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Know, when you the And it's interesting because the we
have seen now with Indiana football, and obviously a long
time before we were able to see this with regularity.
But in terms of this is the biggest game of
the year, you know, happening multiple times over the course
of a season with Indiana, you know, a year ago,
the Ohio State game comes to mind, goes without saying,
(01:24):
the college football playoff week comes to mind. I'm curious
from your observation in these game weeks or preparation, does
Kurt Signetti change approach with his team anymore depending on
one game to get his team up more so than
others so to.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Speak, No, not, and not in the least. Jake, he
just is.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
He's the same guy day after day, game after game.
He just doesn't change his approach to this philosophy for
any reason. And that's one of the things I think
he's successful, because I'm not saying that other coaches do
that necessarily, But I don't know. I just I know
(02:09):
his approach is the same day after day, week after week,
get better each every practice, and you don't change anything
if you're going to change something because something's wrong, and
in his mind, there is nothing wrong with the way
they prepare.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
The only the only time he would change something in
the sense of what he says to his players is
if he thinks that they are not understanding that they're
not doing it the same way this week as they
were last week. And that's when he changes. He doesn't
change anything. He just reminds them that that's not the
way we do it. And you know, in no uncertain
(02:49):
terms if you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yeah, well, and you know he there is such the
and we've talked about it. Don obviously Don Fishing the
voice of the Hoosiers, our guest and by the way,
he is all the Java House Peel and poor guest line.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Don.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
There's this confidence about Kurt Signetty you could say as
a swagger, but it does carry over to his team
unquestionably right. And they are now going into this game
with Oregon. And I watched Oregon against Penn State, and
one of the things that I really was impressed by
with Oregon was late in that game they were able
(03:24):
to They had a precision offense in their passing game.
They have receivers that if they get them in space,
to use that buzzword. They can extend plays, and they
had a quarterback that I thought, even under duress, was
really precise and accurate and can find where the ball
needs to go. What is your impression or I guess
analysis of Indiana in terms of their defensive backfield and
(03:48):
the challenge that will be presented to them.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Well, it's going to be the toughest test of the
year to this point. And I say that not to
be quick and smart or any of that kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
It's just a fact.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
I mean, they haven't played anybody to this level of
talent yet this season, and last year it didn't happen
until they've played Ohio State. It's happening much earlier this season.
And there's no question that Oregon is really well put together.
They have a system, they have a philosophy, and you
(04:24):
talk about their head coach, she also worked with Nick
Saban for a few years and got his first head
coaching job because of that opportunity that was presented because
of that experience that he had. So you got two
guys here that have tutored have been tutored under Nick Saban,
(04:46):
and I think both of them have basically the same approach. Now,
I've seen Landing and interviews and things like that about
what he believes and that kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
It's not far off of what Signetti believes.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
And I'm sure they have their differences and how they
go about things to some degree, but the program and
the philosophy of how you play the game, I think
it's probably pretty identical to what these two coaches believe.
I think they are very much from the same school
of thought and the same beliefs. So what we're going
(05:19):
to see and the one thing you could say about Oregon,
they've had success for years now, not just Underlanding, but
they had success before that. Indiana and Oregon have played
only one time, and to my knowledge, and I haven't
looked back at the record book because the only time
I know that Indiana ever played Oregon when since I've
(05:41):
been there, was two thousand and I think in three
or two thousand and two, but it was under Jerry DeNardo,
and Indiana won that game at Oregon in Eugene. And
they won that ballgame because Oregon turned the ball over
seven times. So it's kind of to win when you
have somebody giving you the football seven different times in
(06:03):
a ballgame, taking away their possessions.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
And adding to yours.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
So at any rate, long story short, this is a
program that's been very successful over the years under multiple coaches,
and I don't think there's any doubt that Indiana's got.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
To have its hands full of this matchup.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
But I don't doubt that Indiana is capable, don't I
really believe Indiana is capable of putting off what some
people would call a surprise.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Now don they And I cheated here. I looked it
up just as you were saying it that this is
this the third meeting. The first meeting between the two
was in Eugene, I believe, but it was actually a
week before the Kennedy assassination, if that tells you how
long ago Oregon won. So they are one and one
against one another, I believe, if I'm not mistaken in
(06:49):
looking at that way. And Indiana is the last I
believe Big ten team, even though they won a Big
ten team at the time to win in Austin Stadium
in Oregon. So there's you know, this is a place.
To your point, it's been a while since they have
played totally different circumstances. I'm curious of this and maybe
I've asked you this before. Does Signetti seem to you
(07:10):
to be the type of coach don that comes up
with different schemes and wrinkles based on what a game necessitates,
or is he more of the this is how we're
going to play, come and get us.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
I guarantee you he will come up with different ideas
in regard to the team that he's playing. He's not
a guy that's structured that way. He believes that you've
got to adapt to what you see and you've got.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
To be able to do that, and if you don't
do that. In other words, I think.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
He feels like he's got the kind of talent that
allows him to do that. And number one and number two,
I think he is always adapted to what they need
to do and made tweaks based on what that particular
team's best stat And then where does he find the weaknesses?
And this is my analogy of Kurt Signetti, and not
(08:08):
necessarily of his personality or any of those kinds of things,
but how he goes about So he tries to find
where the weak points are for that particular team that
they're about to face, and then he tries to scheme
in regard to those weaknesses and those kinds of things.
So I think he's really a smart football coach. I
think he's really understanding of what he has himself, the
(08:31):
talent level that he's got, and what he thinks will
work against the particular team that they're going to go
up against. And I'm sure that's the approach he's taking
against Oregon as well.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Don When you look at the way things went in
Iowa and Indiana getting that game but one that and
I was, you know, I was listening to you guys
when when I WOA miss that field goal. I think
everybody's singing like, holy cow, like there's a second lease
here almost, if you will. But to be challenged like that,
and to to have to then and surat getting that
(09:02):
touchdown that resolve? Did we not see that out of
Indiana a year ago? To your point? In other words,
it was it maybe, even though it was one that
was closer than people would have liked. Was that perhaps
could we look at that later and say that's the
best thing Indiana needed was to have to show their
metal in that game and dig down. I thought it
(09:25):
was impressive, But did we see that a year ago
at any point.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
No, because they didn't have a game like that a
year ago.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
You could some people would say, well, the Michigan game
in the second half, Michigan kind of controlled that second
half of that contest. I can't disagree with that. However,
we didn't see a game like this where it went
back and forth. You know, was tied here, it took
a lead there, and then it got tied again and
went back and forth in this ballgame. Not now, it
(09:55):
wasn't dramatic in that context because it was a low
scoring ballgame.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
But the fact of the.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Matter is I wanted to see Indiana how they would
deal with the adversity in a ballgame where they were
still in it, but they were behind. Could they come back?
Could they make a game out of it? If it
got away from it. It didn't get away from them
in any way in that contest. But the fact of
the matter is I have made it tough on Indiana
(10:21):
for the full sixty minutes of that football game, and
Indiana was able to resolve themselves to get back into it,
to be resilient every time that they got behind, and
they made the plays at the end that made the difference.
And we had not seen that last year, they were
within a touchdown. They actually was tied against Ohio State
(10:44):
going into almost going into halftime, and you'll remember what happened.
The ball got snapped back to Indiana's punter and he
fumbled the snap, dropped the ball down at the seven
yard line at Ohio State. The Buckeys takeover, score, touchdown,
take all the momentum out of Indiana's hands, had put
it in their side, and it was fourteen to seven
at halftime Ohio State. And from that point forward, Indiana
(11:07):
really kind of struggled for quite a bit of the
second half. They kind of fought back a little bit,
but it was it was just you knew the game
was out of hand at that point or they weren't
going to be able to come back and win it.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
And the same thing kind of happened in the Notre
Dame game as well. The other least they had ye
had the big run. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
To have a game like that last week, in my opinion,
probably helped this team's mental frame of mind more than
anything that's happened up to this point this year.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Lastly, Don Don Fisher, our guest voice of the Hoosiers
Indiana and Oregon going to be a three thirty kick
coming up on Saturday. You can hear it right here
on this radio station. Don, somebody asked me this, and
I don't know if you would know this or not,
But for fans that are planning for either the Michigan
State game or UCLA that's the next two home games
after Oregon, what point in the week did they usually
(11:59):
announce start times? Is it usually one week before basically
that people can then start to plan on what time
to head down.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
Yeah, it's basically boils down to what television wants wants
to dictate. And you won't know in any of the
games to be a TBA. Any of the games that
are to be determined time wise, you're not going to
hear until probably six seven days before the game itself.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Don We look forward to it coming up Oregon in
Indiana on Saturday, the big one, the Marquee game in
college football, and can you believe that we haven't even
gotten into basketball yet, But that won't be long before
we start chatting hoops. Right now, when you're ranked seventh
in the country and football, Don, it's all about the gridiron, baby.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
It is.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
There's no question about that, and that makes me happy
because for years it's been quarterly the opposite.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
You're used to guys in September asking you about who's
shooting the ball well from the outside, right, exactly, all right,
don We appreciate it as always.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
All right, thanks Jake dot Fisher, the voice.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Of the Hoosiers, joining us on the program. So chirp, chirp,
here's the good news and bad news. Okay. Over the
weekend on Saturday, and it was fabulous German Fest out
in front of the Antonium, and I'm with Lindsay Monroe,
who's a ball State cardinal, and I'm m seeing the
wiinardog races the docks and dash as they call it,
(13:26):
which is fabulous. Congratulations to Thor, the overall winner, set
a new track record, by the way, two point four
to four seconds on the dash. I actually did the
time Cardemie as well, right, And so I'm announcing college
football scores during it, and at one point I said, like,
you know, ball State was down. I think at that
point it was fourteen to nothing. And then later a
(13:47):
couple of guys that were sitting in the front row,
Aleck and William, like they go nuts and they're like chirp, chirp,
ball State gets to win. And so I announced that
and everybody goes crazy. And so I'm thinking this is
awesome because we're gonna have coach on on Monday. And
and then I said, Eddie, I am super stoked. We've
got the ball State football coach on. And people were
excited at the docks and dash and you said, well
that's great, but he's he wants to blow you crap.
(14:09):
And I said, well what did I do? And so
he joins us now on the Java house by the way,
peeling poor guest line. He is the head football coach
of the Ball State Cardinals. Now want to know in
the mac Mikey Rimovitz, Jones's coach, how are you.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
Doing good and doing good getting ready for Western Michigan.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Okay, So I got to know what it is to
begin with that that I did wrong. Eddie said, you
were grateful.
Speaker 5 (14:29):
It's enough to have me on when I was hired
here at the new staff. And I know, and I'm
a huge Indy five hundred fan. I go, I've been
going for thirty years. And so I sent you a
message this year before the race. I said, I'm camping
out for three days if you want to stop by
and crickets.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Wait a minute, hold on, so.
Speaker 5 (14:51):
True story and I listened to your show, so I
know everybody involved is enjoying this more than I am.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Right now, So if you don't mind me asking, and
I apologize because I I would have been all over that.
When when exactly did you send it on Wednesday?
Speaker 5 (15:05):
I gave you plenty of time to make your way.
Even though I live in India. Now I still camp
out for three days at the track. Okay, you still
got a camp I said, yeah, that's part of the experience.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Well, no question. Now was it Wednesday of race week?
Speaker 5 (15:17):
It was it Wednesday prior to the race?
Speaker 1 (15:19):
Yeah, And I apologize. I did no problem. Here's the thing.
I would have been all over that. I just probably
didn't see it. I mean, well I shouldn't say probably
I didn't see it because I would have absolutely been
all over that. So I have you come by this year?
Speaker 5 (15:33):
We took a pig on Saturday. Every year, all my
coaches go, all my bunch of my former players. It's
a great event.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
And okay, I totally apologize for that, right, totally apologized,
But I but I love the enthusiasm and listen, let's
talk about what took place, because you know, not only
did you get a big win in the MAC. And
I thought about this, You know what I like about
ball State football? And you tell me if there's an
element of truth to this. You go into MAC play
(15:59):
and you're going against a team in Ohio that's you know,
a stout MAC team, and you can look at the
numerical record and say, well, you know, Boss State got
out to a slow start, but you tested yourself. You
went out and you tested yourself and you're playing you know,
when you go to an Auburn, I mean's it's different
than not. You went out there and you tested yourself,
(16:19):
and I thought you saw the fruits of that. Once
you get into league play. Is there some truth to
there were positives that could come out of a negative
at the beginning of the year.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
There definitely is. And I've been up coaching the MAC
before and then this is what a lot of the
MAC schools, you know, have to go through. You go
play some Power four schools and then you get into
conference play and I tell everybody, the thing I love
about the MAC is from top to bottom, it's the
most competitive conference in the country. It's the most level
conference in the country. From what each institution is spending
(16:51):
on their staff and their coaches and their budgets. It's
really really close from the top to the bottom. So
you've got a chance to make a difference as a
coach and develop your player. You know, you look at
the Big ten of the SEC, what some of those
top schools are committing to football, and what the bottoms are.
It's not even like the same conference.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
You know.
Speaker 5 (17:10):
Our situation the MAC is everybody's about the same, So
you get the chance to go out and compete. The
positive of that is you got an opportunity to win
every Saturday, but you can also lose every Saturday because
every game's tight in the MAC and it's really fun
to coach, and I know our players enjoy playing in it.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
When you go into that game against Ohio and you're down,
you know, you're going into the final quarter, you're down
fourteen to ten. What did from a coaching standpoint, you know,
was it a matter of something that was said and
done or maybe even schematically that allowed you in the
fourth court to pull that out, or was it just
simply you had to trust use the old coach's term
(17:46):
of trust the process and trust your guys.
Speaker 5 (17:48):
I honestly believe our kids gained confidence as the game
went on. You know, Ohio won the MAC last year,
and our defense played lights out for four quarters. Our
offense didn't get going to the second half, but you know,
the team. We bring the team up after the third
quarter and I said, guys, look at the scoreboard, go
win in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 6 (18:05):
You're right here.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
We've talked about fourth quarters all off season and this
is why we train. And they went out and did it.
And it was great to see the offense get the
ball back with an opportunity to go win it and
score a touchdown, and then great to see the defense
get a stop. So, you know, it's really nice obviously
when the stuff that you focus on and preach, you know,
happens in the fourth quarter. But now we've got to
move on and we got a really tough opponent this Saturday.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
Are you a different team in terms of the way
you play then you sought out to be when you
first got the job and first gathered together. Did you
have to make adjustment based on just kind of the
roster and what you saw you had?
Speaker 5 (18:43):
I think that it's I think that every coach is
constantly trying to maximize their best players. So we will
be different as the season goes on, and we should
learn our team from week to week. And in football
you got to do with injuries and different schemes and
who you're playing and all that. But you know you
should be improving every week as a team, which is
(19:03):
our ultimate goals to keep getting better. But you know
what we do and how we do it offensively and defensively. Obviously,
you learn more and more about your team and what
your guys are good at as the season goes on.
I don't think you can say this is our playbook
for the year, or these are the guys that are
going to play. We had some guys play this week
that earn their way on the field during the bye
week and the practices that we had they performed so
(19:25):
well in practice. They hadn't played much going into Saturday,
but they showed him practice that they should be out
there on the field.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
By the way, you mentioned the schedule and the fact
that now that you're in league play gets tough. Western
Michigan I believe is next Rock Lowry pretty darn good
quarterback for them, didn't he. I mean, yes, he looks
like one that can kind of beat you two ways.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
He's super talented. He's their leading rusher as well. He's
very physical runner. He doesn't run like a quarterback. He
runs like a tailback. He's downhill falling forward. They have
a very talented tailback. They're good on the offensive line.
They're in the top five in the country in sacks,
and they won three games in a row to the
hottest team in the MAC Right now, they're playing really,
(20:04):
really good football and we get to go up there
and play them on their homecoming, so it'll be a
good environment.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Wait, did you say you camp from Wednesday to Sunday
for the race.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
I got to make sure I'm early and got everything
squared away.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Now, how rudimentary is this camping process? I mean, are
you one of these guys that I mean, are you
going RV? You go on actually pitching the tech.
Speaker 5 (20:25):
When I first started going in high school, I slept
in the back of my truck. But now I've moved
up to an RV because I bring my boys out
there and we used to stay.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
Out in the coke lot.
Speaker 5 (20:34):
Now I've graduated to that lot. That's kind of right
across from the you know where they park all the
buses and the grab a lot.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Yeahs, the gated community of the Coke Lott is Derek
shul Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:43):
Yeah, yeah, I'm not in there anymore. I got my boys,
and our defensive coordinator goes with us every year as
his boys, and then we have people stop by. But
we moved up to a camper now, but I spent
a lot of nights in tents and the bet of
my truck when I was younger.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
And then you sit where for the race we move.
Speaker 5 (21:00):
Around the last couple of years, I've been outside of
turn one, which is pretty good.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Season. Yeah, that's a long hike from your campsite though, right.
Speaker 5 (21:07):
Yeah, yeah, that's all right. I make the make we
make the boys carry the coolers because they're young, they're
in high school and college and Jack just walk.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
And it's beautiful. Listen. It is like it's unlike anything.
I mean, there's just no way to explain, Like if
you're on vacation or you're on recruiting trip or whatever
and you're talking to a kid's dad that you know,
and you're talking about it, if they're not from here,
there's just no way to explain everything that goes into it, right.
Speaker 5 (21:33):
No, you can't. It's it's a great I mean, even
you know, people who don't know anything about racing, they
come to the event and they want to keep coming
back because everybody's there to have a good times. I
love the patriotic element of it because obviously I love
our country and it's just a it's a great weekend
and it's an opportunity for me as a coach. It's
a great time of year for us, spring balls over,
(21:53):
recruiting is just getting over with for May camp start
in June. So it's the one the one week of
the year that I take off and really try to
just get away from everything.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
I mean, it's listen, I love it obviously, and apparently
during the week the only thing that I take, you know,
get away from is checking my messages on social media.
So my apologies, right.
Speaker 5 (22:16):
I'm kind of glad it happened. Now we got something
good to make fun of.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
I guess Akron the next home game for you guys, right,
that's going to be coming up a week from Saturday,
if I'm not mistaken, three thirty up there, right, Yep,
that's correct, all right, plenty of opportunity for folks to
get up see some MAAC football again getting a win
over Ohio twenty fourteen. The ball State Cardinals on the
road against Western Michigan coming up this week. Coach, appreciate
the time. As always, we miss you. The best of luck.
Speaker 5 (22:40):
All right, thanks, appreciate you having me on.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
I much appreciate it, Mike you Rimvich the head coach
and by the way, apparently my midweek coast at the
Indianapolis five hundred mile race leading up to next year's
running and coach joining us on the JAVA House pealingpor
guest line. Yes, in fact, believe it. The Colts are
four and one and assuming they stay healthy, seems as
(23:10):
though they are in very good position, even though it
is so early in the year. And I get it,
but I wanted to get the perspective just on whether
or not we're showing a bias or whether or not
they in fact are legitimately good. So who better to
bring on to the program? Joining us now on the
JAVA House peel and poor guest line. He is with
(23:31):
Sports Illustrated. He's a return guest of the program at
Verde ram Matt I will simply ask you that question.
The Cults, in your opinion, good, very good or great.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
Very good, very good.
Speaker 6 (23:43):
I mean they look, they're second in the yards for play,
they are fourth in yardage, they are second in points. Defensively,
they're they're good. I don't think they're great defensives. They're
good essentially, and that's that's fine. Like when you're playing
offense while they're playing. Taylor's run the heck out of
the ball. I did my all Pro teams at the
quarter pole before this weekend, and Daniel Jones the second team.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
And I think right.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
Now part of that is, you knowless he's playing above
expectations and all that. Do I you know, is he
the second best quarterback in football? No, but to this
point he's been excellent. He's done everything they could have
ever expected. Then some Taylor was my number one back.
He's been the iping the best back in the NFL.
The offensive line is doing its part and the receivers
(24:29):
are doing theirs, and Warren's been awesome. I did Warren
look the last year brought Bauers is an All Pro
tight end as a rookie. Warren might be this year.
So I think the Colts are a very good team.
Who there's gonna be people nationally who say, oh, look
like three O the four wins. Look at they've been again,
that's fine, they've pounded those teams. Give me one because
(24:50):
they win those games twenty one twenty.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
They're not.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
They're winning those games the way a really good team
would win those games, which is just blowing those teams out.
So the Colts listen, they've they've got to keep doing it.
But right now, yeah, I think you'd have to be
super impressed.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
You know, it's interesting because let's begin with this at
the beginning of the year. I remember asking you just
before the season began, and you were dead on when
I said, who's a team that has the feel to
be one that could just completely be a dumpster fire
and unravel before our very eyes? And you said Miami
and certain. And then Week one came around and I
thought to myself, verde Am is a genius. This team
(25:25):
looked completely lost, right, But is Indianapolis to be it
good or bad? Either way? Is Indianapolis the biggest surprise
for you?
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Yes, well they're They're the most They're the biggest surprise
in a positive way. Miami, as you point out and.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
Not far from the genius.
Speaker 6 (25:45):
But it's not surprising to me because I thought they'd
be terrible and they are. The Ravens are the biggest
surprise for me in terms of part of that is
they're insanely beat up. But they weren't insanely beat up
until this past weekend. Like they went to Kansas City
and they were favored in that game, and they were
two and a half points favored in Arrowhead and got
(26:07):
their teeth kicked in and they were healthy on offense.
There was a few guys on defense. They had everybody
in that game offensively, and they got crushed. And I
understand what, You're not going to beat the Texans when
you're missing you know, one hundred guys.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
I get it. They didn't even show up.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
I mean that's a home game and they just laid
down in acting. So for me, the two biggest surprises
are in the AFC, Baltimore looks like a complete dog
and Indianapolis look, I mean look around the conference. Okay,
Buffalo in Kansas City. You respect them in the sense
that they're always there.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
You got the quarterback, you know they're gonna be there
after that.
Speaker 6 (26:45):
Show me a team better than Indianapolis?
Speaker 4 (26:47):
Who is it?
Speaker 6 (26:48):
Who's the team? Like I wrote about this on my
columnists they had SI the good, bad, and ugly, like who's.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
Better than them?
Speaker 6 (26:55):
It's not the Chargers.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
I don't think it's Denver. Is it Pittsburgh?
Speaker 6 (26:59):
I don't think so, Like is it something in the shouts?
Speaker 4 (27:01):
I don't think it is.
Speaker 6 (27:02):
Who Who's the team? So if I'm the Colts, I'm
sitting there going, look, we can go on a nice
run here in this conference, and who knows, maybe even
shock Gold. But there's nobody outside of Buffalo, Kansas City
that I sit there and go, oh yeah, I would
definitely pick that team over Indiana.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
Playoff games you.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
Will, I'll tell you a team that's intriguing to me, Matt,
and I don't think they're as good as Indianapolis, but
I'm curious your thoughts on them because I just don't know.
This is the one team that I'm still like, I
don't know, like which the real version is going to
stand up here? And that's Jacksonville. You know, they've started
to show a little bit more competency, But is that
(27:40):
fools Gold or can Jacksonville be one that keeps within range?
Of the Colts for the totality of the season, I.
Speaker 6 (27:48):
Think Jacksonville is about a five hundred team.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Look.
Speaker 6 (27:51):
I like Liam Kellen. I think he's done a nice shout.
The problem with Jacksonville right now that I see is
two pronged.
Speaker 4 (27:59):
One is Lawrence has not been good.
Speaker 6 (28:01):
In fact, the Lawrence has been downright bad, and they've
survived it because they've forced thirteen takeaways in four games.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
And yet even with that, they needed.
Speaker 6 (28:13):
Punt return to beat the forty nine. They needed they
needed a Houston team that, outside of playing Baltimore, can't
score a point. To lose seventeen to ten the game,
they had three takeaways, their plus two in the takeaway margin.
And that's to me, the very interesting thing with Jacksonville tonight,
like they're an underdog at homes. Kansas City doesn't sound
like Trayvon Walker is gonna play Kansas City is going
(28:35):
to play man coverage, and they are gonna blitch the
daylights out of.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
Lawrence in this game.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
They're just gonna bring everybody. They're not going to care,
They're gonna single up everybody because they can with their corners.
And the interesting thing tonight is if Jacksonville can't turn
Kansas City over?
Speaker 4 (28:50):
Can they win?
Speaker 6 (28:51):
Can or is there one of these things where if
they don't get a bunch of extra possessions and a
bunch of good field position, then the balloom kind of
falls off the roads.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
I was actually looking at this.
Speaker 6 (29:00):
So Jacksonville is number one in terms of the best
turnover differential. Here's the stat that is unbelievable, but it's true.
The Chiefs have not lost a game in which they've
won the turnover battle since week six of twenty nineteen.
They're thirty eight and oh including the playoffs when they
win the turnover battle since that game. So Jacksonville's got
(29:23):
to win it tonight because if they don't, historically speaking,
they'll be three and two, and all of a sudden
you look at him and you say, they got seatle
coming in, and you know what happens moving forward.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
I'll tell you what Matt and I've been Admittedly, you
know I'm a Clemson fan, right so I saw Lawrence
play every game in college. I've mentioned this ondayre one
hundred times. He to me was a slam dunk Peyton
Manning reincarnation. I'm like, this guy is the guy and
I mean, I get it. It's still on the tar
back as an NFL player, And I don't know is
(29:56):
it injury, is it didn't have enough supporting cast early.
Is it quarterbacks need more time to develop and they
just didn't build around him, or in fact, was he
just throwing to Sunday receivers in college and it led
us to believe he's better than he is.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
No, I mean, I'm with you in this.
Speaker 6 (30:13):
I'm not a constant stand. I watched him a ton
in college and I thought he'd be the next Hall
of Fame type of quarterback coming out. Can't miss all
that stuff. I think part of it was his first year.
He played for Irvin Meyer, who is one of the
worst head coaches I've ever.
Speaker 4 (30:30):
Seen at the NFL.
Speaker 6 (30:31):
His entire rookie year was basically watching his coach act
like a clown. And then they had to get Doug
Peterson in there, and that started out well. They went
to the playoffs, they won a playoff game, and then
they were eight and three the following year and Lawrence
got hurt. They missed the playoffs. They fell apart. Then
last year there are more injuries. I think it's a
(30:53):
combination of things and then you look at them this show.
Brian Thomas Junior, who was awesome as a rookie, has
done nothing. Travis Hunter offensively, he has done very very little.
Their offense right now is Travis ETN And if you
can cultail EPN, that's kind of it. Like and that's look,
I think Lawrence the talent is there the problem I
(31:13):
have with Lawrence? And frankly it surprises me with him.
He'll make three or four unbelievable throws in the game,
but he just misses easy throws.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
No, that's exactly right.
Speaker 6 (31:22):
Yeah, he'll miss half doesn't throws a game here, Like
how do you miss that? But that guy, that guy's
wide open.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
Man just lay it in there for fifteen yards?
Speaker 6 (31:30):
And that is that is something that you wonder if
he had been developed better early in his career, would
that not be a problem.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
Matt, do you believe Matt verda Rim is our guest
from SI He is on the Java House Peel and
poor guest line. Do you believe that we will see
in the next let's say, between now and the end
of next season, if Daniel Jones is healthy? Do you
believe that Anthony Richardson will at any point accumulate still
(31:59):
a total of six starts in the NFL, not an Indy.
Speaker 6 (32:04):
I mean, I think if Jones continues to play like this,
if you're if you're the colch yeah.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
And that guy out of the building, you're kidding. I mean,
you've been you've been waiting, and I get it.
Speaker 6 (32:16):
Look I understand because even I feel this way, there's
a part of you that says, it's Daniel Jones. He
was a bust in New York, and you're really gonna
believe in it. But at the same point, like we
have seen this time and again, when guys, especially guys
who were high draft picks, have gotten out of a
place or it didn't work, they get somewhere else, they
(32:39):
find the right system, the right coach, and all of
a sudden starts to worm. Baker Mayfield is a great example.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
Donald yesterday's game, Donald Mayfield and Donald.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
Yeah like those two and it's happened even before.
Speaker 6 (32:51):
Look, Rich Dannon was a guy years ago who is
who bounced around the game an MVP.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (32:55):
You know, Kerry Collins was a guy who you know
had success later on in his career. Giants go to
who I mean there are a lot of examples of it.
You look at Jones and I think, if you're the culture,
you say, listen.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
You know what.
Speaker 6 (33:07):
He doesn't turn the ball over. He is accurate, he's
got some mobility, he's still in his twenties. And if
you've got Anthony Richardson sitting there, maybe you deal him.
Maybe you deal him for a pick and say, you
know what, we take d L on this one.
Speaker 4 (33:21):
It happens. That's I mean, it's just look.
Speaker 6 (33:24):
If you're the cult of if Jones sends up being
anywhere near it's because he's been the first five games.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
It's fine, you know, you move on, You'll live with it.
Speaker 6 (33:32):
You think you're lucky stars to found the guy.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
You keep moving.
Speaker 6 (33:35):
But I think it's really hard at this point that
John's is healthy to see any real world where Anthony
Richardson's getting back on the field in the near or
even somewhat distance.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Ye, Matt Verderram is our guest, SI I Matt, you're
working on what in terms of articles still upcoming that
we can find from you.
Speaker 6 (33:55):
Uh, well, this week is my quarterback rankings. I'll do
them somewhat quarter better before weeks is the first one. Uh,
Friday preview file for the five best games of the week.
I'm going down It's not gonna be coming out anytime soon,
and I'm going out to interview Joe Nama tomorrow for
a magazine piece that I.
Speaker 4 (34:14):
Hope people check out.
Speaker 6 (34:15):
It's coming out the December issue. So a ton of stuff.
I got Collins up in the Dolphins the Raves. I
wrote about the Colt yesterday in my Good, Bad and
Ugly column. There's there's plenty, there's plenty. I'm certainly busiest
time here.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
Have you.
Speaker 1 (34:29):
Have you had encounter with Joath before?
Speaker 6 (34:32):
Yes, I've interviewed the multiple times over the phone. Is
the first time down first?
Speaker 1 (34:35):
I mean, that's pretty cool, right. He was at an
IndyCar race at Alabama a couple of years ago and
was actually super nice guy, to be honest with you, about.
Speaker 4 (34:43):
The nicest guy you can get.
Speaker 6 (34:44):
Yeah, super nice guy. He's gonna have to deal with
me asking him questions about Super Bowl for hours on end.
But yeah, well can find I mean, what the heck
calm Beach, I'll uh, yeah, it's hard to really complain
about going down there.
Speaker 4 (34:56):
Not the worst assignment I've ever had in my career.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
That's let's just say that clearly at this point he's
he's one of the nicer of the ex Jets quarterbacks.
We've learned that much, right.
Speaker 6 (35:06):
I mean, well you've really learned that in Indy definitely true.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
Say that's one of those stories that like started out
you're like wow, and.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
Then like that is it developed?
Speaker 4 (35:14):
For wow? What happened?
Speaker 1 (35:17):
It had a pretty serious one eighty and a lot
of people probably that wish they would have waited that
one out right.
Speaker 4 (35:23):
You know, I learned I've learned over the years.
Speaker 6 (35:25):
Don't tweet because you might think something's really obvious and
then it turns out like nine time times out of
one hundred, it probably is that one time that it's not.
You know, then you're on.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
You know you're on.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
You're on awful announcing and freezing call takes and all
the right and the rest of the time it's it's not
worth the tweet.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
Don't do it.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
It's true. Matt appreciated as always. Man here, you got
it anytime, all right, Matt verd ram our guest on
