Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's absolutely gorgeous outside, I mean absolutely gorgeous, a perfect
(00:08):
day in Indianapolis, and I know apparently it's supposed to
rain this weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
I don't know, but.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
There is so much to talk about and have fun
with on this Friday. And yes, we typically on a
Friday start out with you know, everybody's working for the weekend,
little lover boy, right, But had to even though obviously
it's been nearly twenty four hours since the news came out,
(00:34):
and unfortunately, I think it wasn't necessarily shocking or surprising news,
but we had to set aside lover Boy for the
spaceman right Space Ace Ace freely passing away of Kiss
yesterday at the age of seventy four. And it's interesting
(00:56):
because Kiss and I don't know, I've never known this
those of you who were let's say five years older
than I or older, probably because I think kiss is
prime if you really look at when the you know,
Kiss Alive and you know rock and Roll Night, Detroit,
Rock City, all that. I mean, you're looking at essentially
(01:17):
the second half of the seventies, late seventies into the
early eighties prime Kiss, Army Kiss era, and I have
never known this answer partially because I think the answer
fluctuates depending on who you ask, and that is, was
Kiss a gimmick band that happened to take off and
(01:40):
people loved it? And was it intended to be almost
like a spinal tap gimmick stick band that was brilliantly
marketed by Gene Simmons. Or was Kiss this totally serious,
totally dialed in hard rock metal band that had the
(02:01):
brilliance of anonymity for so long because of the gimmick.
And I think that kind of depends on who you ask.
But there is a point to my story, which is this,
when Kiss, you know, I'm the youngest of three, and
I think oftentimes you can tell when someone has older
siblings because you are pop culturally aware at a younger
(02:23):
age for the obvious reasons of influence within your house.
And for me, my oldest sister notably had the Kiss
Alive two album.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
It was a double album.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
You open it up and there's the picture of the
pyrotechnics and Gene Simmons and everything else. And I cannot
be alone in this regard. Cannot be alone in this
regard in the.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Fact that.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
When I saw the characters of Kiss, when I saw
the big boots and with Gene Simmons, the blood and
the pyrotechnics and the makeup and all of it as
a young kid, it terrified me to this day when
I see pictures of them and all their get up,
like it's a little bit eerie to me. But then
(03:12):
JJ Jackson a MTV in nineteen eighty three in September
did the big makeup unveiling of here here are the
members of Kiss without their makeup on. And I think
at that time Geene Simmons and Paul Stanley were the
only originals left. But my point being that what we
found out and what we've seen with Gene Simmons, who
(03:32):
you know, I was around a little bit with the
IndyCar thing, and you know he has the reality show
and as Freely and Paul Stanley and even Peter Cris,
what we found out is that once the makeup went away,
once the wigs were put up, once the big steel
shoes and boots were aside, it was like that was
(03:53):
all this gimmick and these are.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Just dudes, and the.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Putting forth this badassory image was exactly that. It was
the marketing of Kiss, and so often I think that
happens in sport. I think so often in sport we
see teams or we see athletes that come out and
they put forth this big, huge, tough persona, or they
(04:23):
put out this persona of like sleek and fast and
catch me if you can in space. They put forth
this persona of we work harder than you, you know,
et cetera.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
And you then.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Realize and recognize over the course of game, you know
there was some gimmick to that. And it is seldom
that we see teams or athletes that live up to
and actually exude on stage or in this case, on court,
or on field or on diamond, what it is that
(04:59):
they protect and to be. But then you see those
that it's like no, eventually they prove that everything they're
pretending to be is reality. And yesterday when the news
of Ace freely came out around that time, what we
also found was the reward, or we saw the reward
(05:21):
just after we finished the show, and when John was
on yesterday of the unveiling of the makeup, you saw
that the character is in fact still the same as
the person on stage. And by that I mean to
this point, Kurt Signetti when he came to Indiana. And yes,
we've talked a lot this week about Kurt Signetti, but
(05:43):
now there's kind of a finality. We are basically in
now to the final song of the album on the
Kurt Signetti staying in Indiana story, and we go into
now the encore, which is the rest of the college
football season, and then if you are Indiana, you're hoping
that encore includes the playoffs and et cetera. But Kurt
Signetti when he came to Indiana from James Madison, even
(06:05):
before he arrived in Bloomington, Kurt Signetti went on television
on National TV on ESPN when he was at JMU
and they were getting ready to play I think it
was Old Dominion and he went on there and it
was like, holy cow, this guy surely believes in himself.
Holy cow, this guy is not afraid to pump up
(06:26):
his team. And then he went out and James Madison
stayed in the top twenty five like all year long.
And then he gets hired by Indiana, the program with
the highest accumulation of losses in college football history, and I,
like so many people were convinced it was always going
to be that way, and he comes into Indiana, does
(06:49):
Kurt Signetti, And he comes in with this mantra and
this character. Yeah, I know I look like a seventh
grade math teacher, but I carry with me this old
school confidence, this John Wayne level bravado about me, this
aura of invincibility, and until I'm proven wrong, I win
(07:14):
football games. Just google me. And it rubbed a lot
of people the wrong way. It rubbed Paul Finebaum the
wrong way. It rubbed probably a lot of fans in
the Big Ten the wrong way, and it didn't rub
Indiana fans the wrong way. But I think Indiana fans
were like, whoa.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
What in the world?
Speaker 1 (07:31):
And yet he is now seventeen and two in Bloomington,
And as happens, sometimes in life, things simply work out,
and timing is everything. Andre Agassi once said images everything,
and if image is everything, then kiss never takes off
(07:52):
their makeup. But image isn't everything. But sometimes timing is
the i'ming for Kurt Signetti worked out because Indiana goes
seventeen to two, Indiana defeats a top ten team on
the road, Indiana gets the highest ranking in the history
of Indiana University, and it just so happens that all
(08:14):
takes place in the week that one of the most
tradition laden programs in college football, with the deepest of
pockets and the biggest area of boosters, is looking for
a new head coach and they happen to be hailing
from the home state of Kurt Signetti. But a boom,
but a bang timing is everything and Kurt Signetti. Now,
(08:35):
if Indiana is ranked third in the country in college football,
Kurt Signetti is ranked fourth. I don't mean in terms
of acumen. I don't mean in terms of accomplishment. I
mean in terms of payday.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Baby.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Payday is more than a candy bar in Bloomington. And
you can say all you want that like the candy
bar Indiana is nuts, But I don't think they are.
I think somebody asked me, my buddy mack Ingle covers
the TCU and Texas and everybody down in Texas for
the fort Worst Star Telegram grew up with me and
Indy Mac texted me today and said, is there any
(09:11):
backlash over this deal that Signetti got? And I said,
the entire states doing backflips. Even people at Perdue deep
down are like, you know what, good for that guy?
But he is now the fourth highest paid coach in
all the college football Only Kirby Smart, Ryan Day and
Lincoln Riley are going to make more per year eleven
point six million per year for Kurt Signetti and I
think we deserve a cut, baby, because what have we
(09:32):
been talking about? And I got now this is the
least original thought in the history of mankind. But I
did on my TSTQ group text, which is what we
call it, of all the people I went to high
school with, most of which went to IU last week,
I posted on there, Penn State is going to force
Indiana to go deep in their pockets. And that's exactly
(09:54):
what happened. This was believe you me. This was the
most predicted storyline of all time as soon as James
Franklin was out that Kurt Signetti was getting end up
getting paid. But it wasn't just that. Signetti and I
do actually believe this, and the cults are getting ready
to play the Chargers. We're going to get into that.
We're also going to get into the fact that you've
(10:16):
got the Indie Fuel getting their season underway. We got
tickets for that to give away today. There's a lot
to unpack over the course of today on a Franciscan
helped feel good good for the Hart Friday, we might
have we might have a weather public service announcement to
get to I mean, we got a lot going on,
But it is very easy to assume that this was
(10:38):
strictly a money issue with Kurt Signetti, and money talks
if image isn't everything, but timing is so too are
Ben Franklin's. And as you always have heard in music,
it's all about dead presidents, right and how many have
been getting in your pocket? But in Kurt Signetti's case,
I do think that they're also is something about this
(11:02):
fit in Bloomington. Maybe it's the challenge, maybe it's the people,
maybe it's the campus. But Kurt Signetti, as we're about
to hear, made no bones about the fact that when
it all comes down to it, perhaps in fact, this
is exactly from day one where he wanted to be.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
My wife, Minette and I love Indiana University, Bloomington, the
state of Indiana. The people we've met with have very
strong feelings about President Whitten and Scott Dolson. And you know,
we've accomplished a lot here in a short amount of time,
but still have a lot of work to do, so
I couldn't be more proud to be a Hoosier and
I plan on retiring as a Hoosier, and the way
(11:38):
that this state has embraced us in our success in
football has meant more to me than anything else. So
I just wanted to get on camera and let you
know that Kurt Signetti is going to work daily to
make Indiana the best they can be.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
There you go, and right now they are the best
they can be. Number three in the land taking on
Michigan State homecoming in Bloomington. This weekend, the Colts will
be heading out west, taking on the Chargers out in LA.
And this one's interesting. This one is. And I didn't
(12:14):
think I would say this. I didn't think when the
schedule came out that we'd be sitting here talking about
the game in Los Angeles against the Chargers for the
Colts to continue to separate themselves in the AFC. I
didn't think we'd be talking about the game. I mean,
whoever would have guessed, whoever would have guessed in August
(12:39):
that midway through October number one, that would be like
seventy degrees outside number two, that we'd be talking about
the Indiana football coach getting eleven and a half million
a year and becoming in the top five in college
football coaches in terms of payment. Whoever would have guessed
that we would have been talking about the fact that
Joe Flat would have delivered a loss to the Pittsburgh
(13:04):
Steelers for the Cincinnati Bengals that would allow the Colts
to continue separation amongst those in terms of seating in
the AFC, even though we're only a third of the
way through it. And whoever would have guessed that we'd
be talking about the game going in against the Chargers
where the Chargers were actually trying to keep up pace
with the Colts. But that's where we are. And when
(13:29):
you look at this particular game, this particular matchup, there
are a lot of things about the Chargers I think
that jump out you, notably as we've talked about Justin
Herbert and his ability to kind of spread the ball
around the field, and he is I love Justin Herbert
(13:52):
because I think he has just enough mobility and pocket
presence to extend plays, to go through his progressions and
kind of you know, it's not just one receiver he
locks in on it. He likes tied end he likes,
but he can kind of spray it around and they
have a very balanced passing attack do the Chargers. But
(14:13):
they also, as we've talked about, have a susceptibility to
not always properly protecting Justin Herbert, but the Chargers themselves
and Jim Harbaugh, you know, this is a team that
I think a lot of people going into the year
thought were In fact, there are some probably thought that
(14:34):
they were maybe even a front runner in the AFC.
They're a little dinged up. Their offensive line has been
decimated by injury. The Chargers offensive line is essentially the
Colts defensive backfield and the fact that they just cannot
seemingly buy a break right. As for the Colts themselves,
(15:01):
they also have injuries beyond just defensive backfield. That raises
some questions for them. Yesterday not practicing Josh Downs, not
practicing Ashton Doolan two days in a row for both
those guys. In the case of Down's a concussion. When
you're in the protocol like that, it's tough, and it's
(15:24):
particularly tough when you are coming off of a practice
on Friday where you or on Thursday where you didn't practice,
and if they don't practice today, it's going to be
for downs in particular, it's going to be real tough
for him to be clear for Sunday. Now, Ashton Doolan
he has a just it's listed as a chest injury.
(15:44):
He's had that now and did not practice so far
on Wednesday or Thursday. But Kenny Moore did practice again
for the second straight day and it looks like he's
going to be good to go. Mooney Ward again did
not practice also in concussion protocol, and I think it's
safe to say, because of the fact that his concussion
(16:04):
protocol is coming off of another concussion already this year,
you may well say, okay, Kenny Moore in Shavarius Ward,
Mooney Ward out, and then your receiver position is one
that is again potentially depleted, which then leads to Ashton
(16:27):
Doolan if he can't go, Adie Mitchell having to come back.
And I think in the case of Adie Mitchell, it
simply comes down to this is a guy that's been
buried now and I don't know Adie Mitchell as a player,
(16:48):
I mean as a person. I'm saying, like how it
affects him as a player. I'm saying how he goes
about things, his psyche as a player, I don't know that,
but he does appear to be one when he was
coming in one of the narratives the scouting reports about
Ady Mitchell coming into the draft, and if I'm not mistaken,
(17:09):
the year that he was selected, I think he was
the twelfth or thirteenth receiver taken. It was a very
receiver heavy draft, so take that with a grain of salt.
But at the time that he was drafted, there was
question about his overall focus and maturity as a player,
which many think because of late first early second round talent,
which is why he fell down to where the Colts
(17:30):
were able to select him. And while we don't necessarily
see that on the day to day, it's not even
about action sometime to evaluate one's focus, but rather reaction
to an action. And when he had the situation and
the scene of the crime, Sofi Stadium where the culture
(17:51):
getting ready to go, it was against the Rams where
Ady Mitchell had the two critical errors, not one, but
two the drop ball the goal line, the penalty that
negated the big touchdown run. Not necessarily saying that that
was the reason for the touchdown, but nonetheless it negated
it those two plays. He has not been able to
get back in favor since then, sparingly a target and
(18:17):
then deactivated, and a guy in that situation, if he
finds himself buried, can then actually say and kind of
sulk and kind of throw in the towel a little
bit until the team comes back and says, now is
when we need you. We're not telling you that we
(18:39):
want to see something out of you. We're not telling
you that we're just simply testing you to internally find motivation.
We're telling you we need you. You are now, Your
number is necessary, your contribution is missed, And maybe that's
what he needs. Maybe he needs that confidence of Okay,
(19:01):
they haven't forgotten about me, and now all of a sudden,
I have another chance here to respond and show what
I can do. And I think that's going to be
one thing it's interesting to watch if in fact he
goes and at this point it would seem almost inevitable
that he is going to get reps and get looks
(19:21):
and be a key part of what the Cults are
going to do coming up on Sunday, or try to
do on Sunday against the Chargers. But it's one of
the things that we'll discuss over the course of today. Again,
Kyle Edrip going to join us coming up just about
ten minutes from now. We will get into the action
of high school football, what's going on in that regard
I mentioned Signetti and Indiana basketball is in exhibition tonight.
(19:44):
Jeff rab John's going to join us, coming up on
the program at one point thirty, and then Kevin Bowen
will kind of give us a recap from West fifty
six when he joins us in the two o'clock hour,
and we'll get kind of caught up to speed on
those things that I'm talking about of who's in, who's out,
you know, who might be surprises, who may be trending
in the right direction, and also just the overall vibe
(20:07):
of what is presented by the Chargers that we haven't discussed,
and we'll get into that with Kevin coming up later
in the show. Last night, Corbyn, did you happen to
watch the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati mingles.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Off and on? Off and on?
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Is not how you would describe the relationship and the
reliability of Jamar Chase for Joe Flacco, because that was
one and of course in the Chicago's Pizza Fantasy Football League,
which no one cares about my fantasy team, I realize,
but we do have listeners that are partaking in the
(20:42):
Chicago's Pizza Fantasy Football League.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
And my team is terrible.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
Not my fault, not my fault, decimated by injuries and
guys not showing up. Not my fault. But t Higgins.
I finally said enough. Higgins was my ady. Mitchell. I
was gonna send him a message. I had him on
the bench. I thought to myself, Joe Flacco is going
to favor Jamar Chase. He's not going to throw to
(21:09):
te Higgins. I'll let this sit for a little bit
and I'll see what else I can get out of it.
I'm going for the I'm trying to build up the
depth of my bench, and lo and behold what happens.
But Te Higgins last night does go out and get
some catches, and I think he had a touchdown. But
Jamar Chase and Joe Flacco had this thing going right.
And Joe Flacco, when you watch him, you think to yourself, Okay,
(21:32):
there is still tread on the tires for Joe Flacco.
But Cleveland saw this as well, where yes, donut tire.
It can work in spells, But if you're planning on
going for that for the totality of a season, you're
going to eventually find out why. As a veteran player
and an aging player, he isn't necessarily a guy that
(21:52):
you are going to win with or build around at
this point in his career. But what Cincinnati is doing
with them is perfect, which is, hey, we just need
somebody to keep us in the mix until Joe Burrow's back,
and he can definitely do that, and to an extent,
he did that for the Colts. In the fact of
(22:12):
I think what Joe Flacco was able to do last
year was allow Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen to properly
assess what they had at the receivers and what they
didn't have at the tight end position. And then once
they were able to assess that by the play of
(22:32):
Joe Flacco, because Flacco gave them a regular barometer just
at least of okay and kind of can assess, here's
where you are, and here's which guys can make plays
if there's somebody that can deliver them the ball or
keep out of a clean pocket. And I think the
Colts last year looked at that with Flacco and said, Okay,
(22:55):
if we can get a quarterback that can routinely deliver
the football in stride to Michael Pittman, Josh Down's, you
know obviously Alec Pierce now, et cetera, then we can
we have something here. I think Flacco gave them indication
as to what they had in their receiving corps, which
(23:16):
gave them idea that a quarterback not named Anthony Richardson
would be able to if it is somebody with accuracy
and a little bit of mobility and a little more
zip on the ball, with a little more youth, that
they had enough there. And they also were able to realize,
I think, in assessing it because they had a veteran
(23:38):
quarterback that could give them. Like when you put a
driver and a car in the Indy five hundred, and
everybody knows this driver doesn't have the youth of being
able to go out and make all of the moves
to stay up front for two hundred laps, but they're
really good at being able to get out of the
car after a test run and say this car needs
ABC and D and this car is good in e
and f and that's what Flacco did a year ago.
(24:00):
And I think it also allowed for the Colts to
be able to say what all of us knew, which
was we need a game changing tight end as well,
and they have it now in Tyler Warren. But whomen
come back. It is a Friday night. It's gonna be
a glorious, a beautiful night in central Indiana and under
the lights all over high school football.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Who's your hysteria, baby?
Speaker 1 (24:22):
But on the gridiron version and Kyle Neddrip gets us
up to speed on what's happening under the lights tonight.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Next. I wonder if Kyle Neddrip. I remember.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
Kyle's slightly younger than I. I remember my mom taking me
to village pantry. It's seventy first in Benford to get
kissed trading cards in about nineteen seventy eight. I thought
it was the coolest thing ever. But I'm telling you,
those boots and that get up terrified me. It was
like the Flying Monkeys and the Wizard of Oz. You know,
(24:55):
It's like, I don't know, like my friend Casey Lewis
Wizard of Oz kids movie, what are you talking about?
I'm terrified of the I get it the fly Monkeys,
I get it a little.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Bit, little bit much.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Kyle Nederrip joins us now he's on the Java House
Peel and Poor Guest line.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
By the way, Jake twenty five.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
That's Jak E two five Jake twenty five for twenty
five percent off your first purchase of the Peeling Poor
pods from Java House, whether you're talking about coffee tea
of course, the Liquid Science hydration and Wrangler Energy drinks.
Jake twenty five at Java house dot com. Kyle Neddrip
joining us. Uh, Kyle, we will get to Tech and
Crystal House coming up in just a little bit, and
(25:34):
we'll get to the game that you are covering. But
I'd like to know this when you were a kid, Like,
how old were you when you were first familiar with
the band Kiss?
Speaker 3 (25:44):
I mean I was pretty young.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
They were they were probably you're you're yeah, you're probably.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
A little bit older than me.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
So I would like the seventies music, I was not,
you know, totally in on until uh, you know, until
I got a little older in that music became popular again,
I would say.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
But so I was kind of my.
Speaker 5 (26:04):
First my first memories of you know, music, probably like
in the early eighties, So it wasn't like kiss was
front of mine right at that point, I don't think,
I mean as far as I did.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
Did there get up with the big like the spiked boots?
I think between that and the spitting blood even though
that wasn't you know current perhaps when you first saw it,
and you may not have been young enough when you
first saw it, did it scare you at all?
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Or is it weird that it scared me when I
was a kid.
Speaker 5 (26:35):
No, I don't remember. I don't remember being scared by that,
but I do remember when you mentioned the Wizard of
Oz and the flying monkeys.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
I was definitely I love that movie. I loved that movie, but.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
That was a little when they went to the Witch's
castle there, I was definitely a little bit freaked out,
and the flying monkeys were a big part of that.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
The how many times would you say you've seen the
Wizard of Oz?
Speaker 3 (26:58):
Oh, my goodness, right, so many? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (27:02):
You have no idea how old you were the first
time you saw it, right, You just you've always known it.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Right, I've always known it.
Speaker 5 (27:07):
Yeah, I mean I remember then it used to just
be on like a couple of times a year they
would run it.
Speaker 1 (27:12):
I remember it being on like for whatever reason, The
Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music. I remember
both of them being on, like on either Thanksgiving night
or Christmas typically Thanksgiving night and then like around Christmas time.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
Yes, yeah, like what's a year that sounds right?
Speaker 5 (27:30):
I did when I was pretty young. I look forward
to watching it, so I that was one thing I remember.
You know, I've never my wife kills me for I've
never seen Sound of Music, so I don't even know
that one. But uh, I know what it is, but
I just.
Speaker 3 (27:43):
Haven't seen it.
Speaker 5 (27:44):
But uh, the Wizard of Oz man, Yeah, I still
watch it when it's on now.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
A nanny that's basically like missus Brady picks up like
six kids and parades them around mountains in Austria escaping
war torn times and sing songs that I don't need
to see it. I mean to see it classical movie.
But okay, what game are we heading to tonight?
Speaker 5 (28:07):
I will be watching Pendleton Heights play Shelbyville and we'll
have a kind of a different type of story from
that game tonight. So looking forward to seeing Penlton Heights
for the first time this year. They're they're having a
great season, only one loss this year. They're they're ranked
highly in Class four A, I think number seven this
week in four A, and the only loss is to
(28:30):
newpal which is you know where we all know, having
just a fantastic season. So it's kind of a special
year that that Pendleton Heights has had so far. And yeah,
they are seventh, and Shelbyville actually two, is having a
really good year. They're four and four, which you know
may not sound like monster.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
No for them, that's saying I mean, they were winless
just a few years ago, right they were.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
Yeah, they they were winless. Not only winless, but man,
they were just struggling, you know, numbers wise, struggling to
even score points a couple of those years, you know,
going back to twenty twenty twenty, nineteen twenty twenty and
then you know, I've kind of made some strides here
in the last couple of years. So but yeah, it's
been a good season for them. So yeah, I'm a
(29:09):
little different. We'll have a hopefully a story in the
morning that'll be a little bit different.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
So when you say a little.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Bit different, can you give us an indication as to
what angle we're talking here because I do know this
about Shelbyville. You know, I've mentioned before I lived in
Shelbyville when I was a little kid, but I spent
a lot of time in Shelbyville. I know of that
community and some of the challenges that it's had, certainly
athletically for the Golden Bears. But I'm getting the impression
here that you're indicating that it's going to be above
(29:37):
and beyond just a football x's and o's story.
Speaker 5 (29:40):
Yeah, and actually it's on the other side. It's Pelton Heights.
Is they're kind of letting me have some access tonight
to kind of go, you know, behind the scenes a
little bit myself and our photographer. So it won't be
anything crazy because you know, you're writing on deadline, it's late.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
You know, hopefully it's really good. That's the goal is.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
To write something different and and good, uh, you know,
for for the readers. But but you know, having a
little bit more access I think will be fun and
kind of give some insight into what goes on. I'm
gonna get out there lit early and and senior night
and and Jed Richmond's been nice enough to kind of
let me go behind the scenes with them tonight. So
something I've done, I do occasionally and you know, it's
(30:22):
it's always you know, fun for me, you know, because
you know, even though you're covering it, you're somewhat removed
at times from what you're covering. But you know, having
some insight into the inner workings is always fun and hopeful,
hopefully beneficial to people who follow high school sports.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
Kyle, when you look, Kyle nrep is my guest. He's
on the Java House Peel and poor guest line. He
is with the Indianapolis Star, of course talking high school
football here. When you look around the state and you
know you've had the pleasure and the privilege to cover
high school athletics for a long time. But in this
particular season, give me a story of a play that
(31:02):
is off the beaten path. And by that I mean, like,
for example, I do you know each Friday the feel
good good for the hard story right where and I'm
not so I'm curious. You have written a lot of these,
and I have always admired your ability to bring to
the forefront some of these stories. Give me the story
(31:22):
of a local athlete that Kyle Nennripp found so inspirational
that you a that it was an honor and a
privilege to illuminate the accomplishments of an athlete that was
off the beaten path.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (31:38):
I mean when you say it like that, I would say,
you know, and there's there's been Yeah, I mean, I
appreciate you saying that because I mean that's kind of
the whole point of doing this is.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
You know, to bring those stories to light.
Speaker 5 (31:50):
There's a young man out named Jackson Grundy at the
North Montgomery who was on the tennis team, also you know,
three sport athlete.
Speaker 3 (31:59):
But he's a little little.
Speaker 5 (32:00):
Guy and uh, you know, he had he had some
health issues growing up and was always just kind of
a small kid. And you know, they found out that,
you know, his kidneys just were not functioning properly. He
and at the start of twenty twenty five, he he
was on dialysis. I was pretty dire and needed a
(32:20):
kidney transplant. And you know, I was lucky enough to
talk to him and his mom and some of the
people in North Montgomery and then you know, one of
the teachers actually got involved and she she was going
to uh, you know, donate a kidneyt for for Jackson,
and it ended up where he found a kidney before.
(32:41):
But her name is Donnelle Rogers, but she she's an
English teacher there. Uh but even after that, she went
ahead and and and uh went through the process and
which I thought was you know, talking to her was
just kind of added to the to the story quite
a bit, you know. But that's definitely a kid and
he had successful, you know, kidney transplant. Has gone on
(33:03):
to continue his tennis season this past fall. He's playing
on playing be on the basketball team, and in playing
golf in the spring, which he loves golf. And hopefully
we'll go on to abash in college. At least I
was just playing when I talked to him. And he's
the top he's one of the top academic kids there.
He's he's he was on the homecoming court. So all
(33:24):
kinds of you know, great things going on in his life.
But his situation was really dire at the start of
twenty twenty five and needed a transplant, got it. And
also kind of you know, like I said, this Donelle Rogers' teacher,
who's you know, I think she said she's fifty years old,
But she ended up donating a kidney you know, became
a you know, real advocate obviously for him and for
(33:44):
you know, kidney transplants, and it's just kind of a
kind of a neat thing was able to you never know,
you know, kind of in this people you meet and
things that you know. But it's kind of inspiring or
just not kind of definitely inspiring for me to to
meet people like this and be able to kind of
tell stories. But when you mentioned that angle on a
kid who's inspiring, I mean I would definitely say, you know,
(34:07):
Jackson's right at the top of that list.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
You know.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
I mentioned that story, Kyle, because I was aware of
it from the donor side, because of Indiana, you know,
the Indiana Donor Network and Driven to Save Lives, which
we've done a lot of work with here, great people.
I've had the privilege of being able to go and see,
you know, just.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
The overall.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
Tour through you know, both sides of the organ donation,
by going through the Indiana Donor Network and seeing their
facility on the Northwest side and then getting to know
you know, Danny, who is a kidney recipient that has
become a strong advocate through Brian Clausen in the different
sides of organ donation and that that story for that
reason struck a chord with me because I think that
(34:50):
the the angle of the stranger potentially helping stranger with it,
and also knowing that there is no age limit for
organ donation organ you know, obviously being on the receiving
end as well. I want to commend you because I
thought it was a really important story to get out there,
and I thought your your pin did an excellent job
of voicing that story and the triumph of it too.
(35:12):
In the Indiana Dunner Network, who I'm a strong believer in,
very much appreciated in terms of the football side of things.
For tonight, one of the games to me intriguing Cathedral
and Warren. I think Cathedral when you look at record, Kyle,
and we've talked about it, you might look at Cathedral's
record and think that it's I'm not going to say
a down year for Cathedral, but not a typical Cathedral year.
(35:33):
But I think that's misleading because their schedule has they
have not been afraid to challenge themselves. We've talked about
that in the past. What do we look for tonight
with Warren?
Speaker 5 (35:44):
Yeah, I definitely agree with you and yeah, and thanks
for saying that about Jackson in that story by the
way too. But I would say, you know, Cathedral in Warren,
I think both are probably better than their five and
three records indicate, you know, And I think that'll be
really interesting game. These teams played last year in a
close game. Warren won that game, but both battling some injuries.
(36:07):
I don't expect Keon Thomas will play to night for Warren.
You know, Cathedral has been battling some injuries at some
key spots as well. But it should be a great game.
And and I think Cathedral definitely will will be a
challenger for newpal in the sectional down the road at
Center Grove. Bloomington South is super interesting to me too.
These teams haven't played against each other in.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
A long time.
Speaker 5 (36:28):
But but you know, from a five A verse six
A South is very good this year, so we'll kind
of see where they're at from a standpoint of can
they challenge in the five A tournament. That's a good indicator.
East Central Ron Colly also I think is a great game.
East Central's highly ranked in five A. They're typically a
four A team, but playing up because a success factor
(36:50):
in Ron Colly of course, you know, highly ranked in
Class four A as well. So I think that's an
interesting game. That's been a really good rivalry game, close
games over the years. Cascade, as they know they're at
Western Boon. That'll be a good one. HSC plays Brownsburg.
Last team to beat Brownsburg was HSC last year this
same week, so otherwise, Brownsburg I think would have what
(37:11):
a twenty one game winning streak if not for that game.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
So I think that'll be an interesting game to watch
as well. But yeah, several good games. I think.
Speaker 5 (37:19):
Should be great weather again tonight like we've had all
season on Friday, and knock on wood hopefully that continues.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
And you mentioned New Pal by the way, and I've
talked to people about New Pal and just there you know,
they are such an offensive juggernaut, Kyle, But I think
it New Pal is just a classic example of what
can happen when you get kids to buy into a
program at a young age, get into the wait program
and everything else. And when you're watchingow New Pal play football,
(37:46):
you're watching kids that have known since they were probably fourth, fifth,
sixth grade exactly what they needed to do to represent
that high school. Right, I mean, that is a juggernaut.
Speaker 5 (37:56):
It is, Yeah, and it's been fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
You know.
Speaker 5 (37:58):
I was kind of when Kyle Ralph first got out there.
I still remember first meeting him his first year, and
there's you know, it was just like, you know, there
was something about him that was you know, it's not
necessarily the you know, it's it's just the work they
put in, like you mentioned, and and they were a
real advocate of weight room and getting in there and
and not really just football but all sports. And he's
(38:19):
a big part of that. But but yeah, to look
at where they were then, and they were really good
even his first year, but to go where they've gone
since he's been there, and this is this you could
argue this is their most well rounded, deepest team that
they've had, which is really saying something considering all the
great teams he's had there. But I guess the you know,
the next few weeks will bear that out, how they're remembered,
(38:41):
if they if they go on and win it or not.
But but I can't imagine there's been many more dominant
seasons really in the history of high school football than
what Newpals had this year.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Kyle Nenritt will be out at Pendal and Heights.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
You said, right, yes, sir, all right, we will look
forward to that story with Penolan Heights and Shelby Belle
and taking a look at it from a little bit
of a different angle tonight, Kyle. Appreciate the time as always,
and we'll talk to you next Friday. All right, you bet,
Thanks Jake, I appreciate it again. On the Java House
Peel and Poor Guest line we come back. I was
driving in today. This happens from time to time, and
(39:17):
I looked at the you know, I looked at my
watch and I'm like, man, this date sounds familiar. And
then I realized why, and it kind of reminded me
of something that happened last night. I'll explain next. So
Jimmy sends me this. By the way, Jimmy Johnson, I
don't know if that's the coach or not sends me this,
(39:38):
or maybe it's the driver. Jake, you were so misinformed
on Kiss. Yes, the makeup and persona was to scare you,
but coupled with great music is what made them legendary.
They still had great music without the makeup and still
sold out arenas. You need to get educated on Kiss
before you speak. Okay, I think, actually that's exactly what
I said. But Jimmy, you should listen to the show
(40:00):
with the same critical ear by which you listen to Kiss.
Pay attention to each and every lyric. I appreciate it. Hey, Jake,
quit blaming your team's crappy season on injuries. I I'm
not sure what that reference is, but I will definitely
take note of it. I'm writing it down right now.
So I'm on my way in today and I actually
(40:20):
had to get up this morning and run a couple
of errands, and so at one point I thought to myself,
good lord, I need to check and see what time
it is, because I feel like I'm running late for work.
And then and the whole time I woke up, And
this happens to me from time to time. I woke
up and I'm like, man, there's something like something feels
(40:42):
I feel like there's something today, like it's an anniversary
of some sort. And anniversaries I realize typically you go
what like twenty twenty five point fifty, So when something's like,
you know, when they're like today's the forty first anniversary.
I am okay, but the date jumped out at me,
and I couldn't pinpoint what it was. And then I thought,
(41:03):
you know what, as a die hard seven weeks now,
die hard in the wall watch every inning fan of
the Toronto Blue Jays, I knew last night. I was
super tired. I did a bunch last night. I kind
of have a lot going on, and so I went
to bed early and I actually thought, I actually thought
(41:23):
that the Blue Jays Game four was tonight. I didn't
realize that Game four was last night. And I'm afraid
to admit, as a die I'm negating my responsibilities as
a diehard Blue Jay fan for seven weeks now that
last night there was a game and things were just
discombobulated in terms of a lot going on, and I
was like, maybe in my mind I was delaying that
(41:45):
last night was Game four. And then I realized the
reason for delay in my mind was because today was
in fact in anniversary, because it was and this is
really hard to believe that it was thirty six years
ago this happened.
Speaker 6 (42:04):
Well, so that's the greatest open in the history of
television far none. Yes, it certainly this and we're still here.
We are still as we can tell on the air
and I guess you are hearing us, even though we
have no picture and no return audio, and we will
be back, we hope, from San Francisco in just a moment.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
That's how it sounded, is they were doing the pregame
analysis of the Giants and the Oakland Athletics on October
seventeenth of nineteen eighty nine, and the World Series that
was delayed between those two teams.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Al Michael's on the call there.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
He would later go on to I believe win an
Emmy at the very least nominated for one for his
live coverage of the earthquake. You know, obviously the rest
of the evening, because that earthquake in nineteen eighty nine
was a really really serious one, a six point nine
on the Richter scale. Tonight, by the way, things get
(43:05):
underway for the Indie Fuel. If you have not been
to the Fisher's Events Center, it is fabulous, absolutely fabulous
up in Fishers And you know, obviously it's where the
Indian Night play, It's where the Freight play with Inner
Football and the Indie Fuel. And we have tickets to
give away for tomorrow night. We have a four pack
(43:26):
to give away. It is military appreciation night tonight the
home opener for the Fuel Tomorrow night, though they are
getting underway at seven o'clock and the doors open at
six o'clock. They are taking on who are they taking on?
Did we say Corbin tomorrow night? The Walleye, the Evil
Toledo Walleyes. I believe it's fort Wayne tonight to open
(43:47):
things up. But tomorrow night seven o'clock is when the
puck drops. Doors open at six, and we have four
tickets to give away. We will do it right now.
For Color number, we'll go with four for the Indie Fuel.
I love going to Fuel games. Going to be there
tomorrow night, So if you are and listen, this is
the real bonus of it all. Not only do you
(44:07):
get to go to the game, but Shannon and I'll
come by and say hi because we're going to be
there as well. We'll have a beer with you or
die cooc is perfectly sufficient. Caller number four right now
at two, three, nine, ten seventy one o'clock hour underway.
By the way, I mentioned yesterday, I think it was yesterday.
(44:27):
So today is going to be a make good Friday, Okay,
make up Friday in honor of A's freely and kiss.
This is a makeup Friday, even though Jimmy is mad
at me because he thinks that I was saying that
kiss is only known for their makeup. That's not what
I said. But nonetheless, to make up Friday because yesterday
I had mentioned that we were going to be more interactive.
(44:49):
You remember when I said that Corbin is going to
be more interactive. You and I were on the phone
last night for nearly two and a half hours. Right, Yes,
we we're a man a few words, so I did
the most of the talking. But I'm used to that.
But it's an inter active Friday. It's a makeup day, okay,
because it's like when you were a kid. When you
were a kid and at the end of the year,
you're like, wait a minute, we're going to school two
extra years. Yeah, their makeup days because we had a
(45:11):
snow day, and today's a makeup day because yesterday we
had some we had some issues technically speaking, and we
couldn't necessarily interact. Now I loved it, of course, because
it meant more of me and I love me some me.
I do, but.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
I'm looking at the camera.
Speaker 1 (45:36):
That was sarcasm, by the way, But I do love
me some me, but I'd like to interact more today,
so a makeup interaction day at two three nine ten seventy.
There's plenty to talk about, For example, the fact that
we could talk about that Ady Mitchell. Shane Steichen now says,
in fact, will play Adie Mitchell will play on Sunday
(46:00):
in Los Angeles the scene of the crime where he
had the staffoos against the Rams at Sofi Stadium, and
now he is going to be back out on the
field and will play the Sunday. Now how much or
how targeted, I don't know. I don't know that we
know that yet, but he will play that much, we
(46:21):
do know, Hey, Jake, remember when the Reds were on
their Wire Wire World Series our senior or at high school.
Speaker 2 (46:28):
Quite a ride.
Speaker 1 (46:28):
Hopefully they can make a World series before we're too
old to remember. Jeff, I do remember, and if I'm
not mistaken, the Eric Davis home run game I believe
also today is an anniversary of that. That nineteen ninety
team was awesome, Jose Rijo, and I mean Billy Bates,
Billy Hatcher going eight for eight I think to open
the World Series was awesome, Hey, Jake, The Indie fuel
(46:52):
this from Jalen, who is a huge fan of mine.
By the way, the Indie Fuel future AHL affiliate of
Indiana NHL team previously known as the Anaheim Ducks now.
Jalen also says that Indianapolis is eventually going to be
home to the White Sox, and I think also is
convinced that Indianapolis is going to get an MLS team.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
So I applaud.
Speaker 1 (47:14):
Jalen for his enthusiasm of sports expansion within this fair city.
But if you would like to chime in on anything
we've talked about over the course of the week, it
is a makeup interactive Friday, and believe you me, I
(47:35):
wanted to interact. I wanted to interact, but we had
some technical difficulties. But let's get into the Colts and
the Chargers and that fact of Adie Mitchell back on
the field. One of the things that has been a
real There have been a lot of things this year.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
For this Colts team.
Speaker 1 (47:54):
There have been several things that have I think awakened
them in terms of these greener pastures they have in
the way that they're playing, the record that they have,
the start they've gotten off to, and Daniel Jones is
the backbone of so much of that. It goes without
(48:18):
saying he provides for them the stability, the leadership, the
consistency that they have been looking for and that they
have been seeking now for quite some time. And I
know I've probably said it every day since he was signed.
(48:41):
But what we don't know, and I don't know that
we will ever get a full answer, nor are we
necessarily entitled to that full answer of did Chris Ballard
go out and sign Daniel Jones because he truly looked
at it and said this guy can play? Or was
(49:03):
it Hey, we need a veteran as a counter to
Anthony Richardson to push and lift Anthony Richardson and work
with him like we had with Joe Flacco, you know,
work with him like we had with Gardner Minshew and
just tutor him. And then once he got here, Shane
(49:24):
Steiken said, you know what, there are some tools here
I can work with. Or you know which wasn't which
was the reason. Did they know when they signed him
that this was the possibility. I don't know, and quite frankly,
I don't know that I care. What I know is
he's playing at a very high level. Is this the
real Daniel Jones. I think that when you have multiple
(49:53):
weapons for him to throw to, it allows for him
to and Anthony Richardson, I don't mean to keep going
back to Anthony Richardson, but offensively in terms of what
the Colts want to do, I think they have. When
you have the number of weapons that the Colts have,
you need some of those weapons come. It's not from
(50:14):
the outside in, it's from the inside out. And by
that I mean you want to start out by the
layups and then eventually you work your offense around where
you're spraying it around the three point line to use
a basketball analogy. And I think what the Colts were
(50:34):
doing and what was hurting them is they were becoming
too reliant on being a big playoffense. We are either
going to try to spring Jonathan Taylor into a big
run or we are going to go the deep ball
for a deep pass, and that when you do it
that way, you are It's a tough way to play
(51:00):
yachtzi when you need a six every time. And so
Daniel Jones in this offense and what Shane Steichen has
done has said, I have a quarterback now that can
hit the layups where I am starting out with the
bubble screen or starting out with the quick slant, and
I'm using Alec Pierce not as the deep ball guy,
(51:24):
but I'm now using Alec Pierce as in addition to
that possibility. But I'm using him on a curl right
off the line. I'm using him almost as a possession receiver,
and that then is freeing up Josh downs. And I'm
using Michael Pittman Junior across the middle and taking advantage
of his versatility and his durability. And Michael Pittman Junior
(51:49):
gets a ton of credit for a year ago playing
with that hurt back, I mean, tough to the core,
but I'm using him that way, and then that is
facilitating when then we're getting used to people seeing Alec
Pierce expecting to do a quick on the line curl.
Now we're going to send Pierce deep. Now we're going
to send Ashton dooland deep. And then you have the
(52:12):
Tyler Warren factor. You just I think needed a quarterback
to have that consistency, and that's where they are now.
Does that maintain and sustain over the course of the year.
I think that we are already to the point of
the year where there's tape out, there's film. You know,
you see a lot of quarterbacks that start out a year,
(52:34):
or offenses in general, that start out a year and
look super efficient and almost unstoppable, and then teams start
to figure out how to limit offensively. They make adjustments,
they come up with different looks, they come up with
different blitzes, and they know what creates that offense to
(52:56):
get off kilter, and what the best quarterbacks do, like
a Peyton Manning, you know, like theoretically today, well certainly
a Mahomes a Josh Allen is they're able to see
that look that you're giving that different look, and again
counter and get out of a bad play. Sometimes that's
(53:16):
all you want is just to get out of a
bad play. It's not that you want to run some
great play. It's like, no, no, no, we got a
bad play here. So instead of a two yard loss,
we're just going to do a run and get a
two yard game and move on and rinse and repeat,
or you know, get out of that play.
Speaker 2 (53:29):
And so.
Speaker 1 (53:32):
I think that we are in the point of the
season where we can start to understand and see that
they are getting different looks and yet they are still
able because of the versatility of their offense to counter
those A makeup Interactive Friday. Now, Mike, I believe, has
(53:54):
a racing question, And Mike, I'll be honest with you.
When it comes to the racing stuff out of season,
sometimes for me, the break calibers start to get a
little rusty. But I will do the best I can.
I do know this that F one today has closed
a deal as I understand it, with Formula one and
F one Races will now be on Apple on a
streaming service in the United States. That announcement, if it
(54:18):
hasn't come out yet, will be coming out shortly.
Speaker 3 (54:20):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
But I will do my best. Lsewise, Mike, what's up?
Speaker 3 (54:24):
Hey?
Speaker 7 (54:24):
This is an easy one for you. When when the
at the Indie Racing and Indy Car Racing, I guess
it's say, when they come out of turn four and
I assume out of turn two they're out wide, then
they head towards the infield and then come back out
wide for turn turns two and four, And I guess.
Speaker 3 (54:46):
Right, right right, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (54:48):
I know exactly what you mean. Yep.
Speaker 8 (54:50):
Why do they do that?
Speaker 7 (54:51):
Why don't they go on a straight line?
Speaker 2 (54:53):
Mike. That Now, let me ask you something, Mike.
Speaker 1 (54:55):
I'm gonna ask you a question here, Okay, go ahead,
and I want you to answer this honestly, Okay, on
a one to ten scale, Mike, on a one to
ten scale, ten being the most egregious and one being
not at all in your mind when you ask that question,
how worried are you as to how dumb a question
(55:16):
that is ten being the dumbest question ever and one
being not at all? And I make a living asking
dumb questions, so I want you to be honest.
Speaker 7 (55:22):
It's a nine at bet.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
Okay, I will tell you this, Mike.
Speaker 3 (55:27):
No me.
Speaker 1 (55:27):
Here's the thing, Mike, It's one of the best questions
I've ever been asked. And the reason I say that
is because I have asked that exact same question, and
I have the answer for you, and I have the
answer because I asked those that are in the car
at one point I said the same thing. I'm like,
when I watch Qualifying, why is it that when they
come off of turn four they immediately dive down to
the middle or the inside of the track?
Speaker 3 (55:49):
Right?
Speaker 1 (55:49):
That's what you're asking, right, Okay? Exactly the reason why,
the reason why is because because the Indianapolis five hundred
is an oval, and that means that you have to
make eight hundred perfect left hand turns. The tire stagger
and the way that the tires are set up and
the tire pressure and the weight balance of the car
(56:10):
is designed to naturally push the car towards the left.
And so when you go into the turn and you
take the turn high, and you do so from the
standpoint of just your overall inertia carrying you in with
that speed the car itself. As you're doing that, the
car is saying, I gotta get to I gotta get
to the left.
Speaker 2 (56:30):
I gotta get to the left. I gotta get to
the left.
Speaker 1 (56:32):
So it is in your best interest, with the immediacy
of when you can do so, to then allow the
car to go where it naturally wants to go, because
that allows it to perform at its highest level.
Speaker 7 (56:44):
So that's a different setup well obviously, but different than
NASCAR because NASCAR does not do that.
Speaker 2 (56:51):
NASCAR.
Speaker 1 (56:54):
Yeah, I think with NASCAR, and I can't speak to
that because I'm not around it as much, Mike, I
appreciate the call, but I think with a NASCAR car,
the weight of the car is so heavy that you
are fighting the car at all times anyways, whereas an
Indy car, the lighter, the aerodynamics of the car are
such that it is much more temperamental in terms of
(57:14):
the setup that allows it to be. Indy cars are
designed the faster they go to create more downforce down
on it. With a Nascar the weight of the car
prohibits it from sliding all over the place for the
most part. I mean, obviously it does, but an IndyCar
is designed because of the sleek nature of getting the
most speed out of it. It is designed to have
(57:35):
a balance between taking out as much downforce as possible,
but at the same time allowing it to go fast,
and that means that you have to listen to the
car much more than you do in a NASCAR Dario
Frank Kitty once told me that going from IndyCar to
NASCAR was like going from a Corvette to a school bus.
(57:55):
And that's the best way that I can answer it,
if that makes sense. But I see, that's what we
do on a makeup interactive Friday, right correct?
Speaker 2 (58:04):
Now?
Speaker 1 (58:05):
The other thing on this interactive makeup Friday, and this
is not a makeup but it is a Friday, and
it is gorgeous outside, beautiful outside. However, it is my
understanding that it's supposed to rain this weekend. Now do
we happen to have the breaking new Sounder Corbin this
(58:31):
just in it's the first time we've been able to
do it. But it is autumn. The leaves are a changing, right,
the leaves are a change and they're a little late
this year. Typically this time of year, this is the
weekend fall break. Everybody's going down. They're going to Brown County,
they're going to Nashville, they're going to the little old
drugstore restaurant that unfortunately is closing. I think you got
(58:54):
like three weeks left something like that. But this is
the time when everybody's going down to Brown County. Everybody's
checking out the leaves. And then as you are looking
at and you're captivated by the look of the leaves,
and it's autumn, which is also known as fall, meaning
guess what they're floating right down there off of the trees.
Rain comes this weekend, even if some of the rain,
(59:19):
and the rain might facilitate it might expedite the fall
of those leaves, and you know what that means. The
breaking new sounder is there because yes, in fact, my
mom has a message.
Speaker 2 (59:30):
For all of you.
Speaker 9 (59:32):
Good morning, Jake. This is mid October, so it's time
for me to put out the public service announcement. It's
a beautiful, colorful day today. The leaves are just turning
such bright colors and they're so pretty. And this weekend
we're supposed to have rain, which is going to bring
(59:54):
the leaves off of the trees and onto the sidewalks
and the streets. So please everybody be very careful scribing
because rain and are toxic, yes, toxic. They're slippery on
the sidewalk and there's slippery on the street, so everyone
(01:00:15):
be very careful. But enjoy these colors. We have them, Okay,
So thank you very much. Goodbye.
Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
That's that's my mom's annual PSA. The toxic Mix. Literally,
I'm not kidding you. Like when you think about it,
you know, it's I don't know what what out there
would be toxic when you mix it to it together, right,
but it is a toxic mix, and my mom is
making sure that everybody is aware of it several I'm
telling you right now, few things give me more joy,
(01:00:46):
few things make me more proud. Than when people will
say to me and they and I'll get like tweets
from people, Hey guess what I was in. You know,
we we actually went to Holland for fall break and
I saw the wet leaves and immediately I thought of
Jake's mom Let's go annual. A tradition like no other,
A tradition like no other. Is in fact the mom
(01:01:07):
psa a tradition like no other. Pacers in action tonight,
taking on San Antonio and the Spurs once again, this
time down in San Antono. And you know, the Pacers
started the week by playing San Antonio. Here, Benedict Mathern
in that game was able to show what Benedic Mathern
(01:01:28):
can do. And I think for Benedick Mathern, what was
so important was they meaning the Pacers got that scoring
out of Mathern with efficiency. It's one thing to be
a volume score, it's another to be an efficient scorer.
And there are players that you look at and they're scoring,
(01:01:52):
you know, like WHOA And then you look at the
box score and you're like, well, yeah, I mean it
took him thirty eight shots to get there. And Mathern
a has been that guy, even though the offense of
the pacers typically leading up to this year has not
been of that necessity nor that you know, facilitating it
(01:02:14):
because they're He has never been when he's been on
the floor their designated score in situations yes, in certain possessions, yes,
but Matherin has never been the guy going into the
year where everybody knew you are in fact going to
(01:02:36):
be the guy that is like Option A or B.
I think we know that Pascal Siakam is going to
be a key ingredient to their offense. But if Rick Carlisle,
as he has said, and as Aaron Neismith as he
has said on this program and other players have said,
(01:02:57):
if they are going to continue playing at the same
pace that we have become accustomed to, then that would
mean that Matherin becomes important because if you're going to
have Siakam as your primary go to option A score,
that means you're slowing things down. But if you want
(01:03:17):
to keep it same pace, then the way that you
do that is when you come down before you even
set up into a half court set, you are getting
quick shot to begin with, or you are immediately facilitating
that weave, which is partially based upon somebody being a
volume scoer, but an efficient one to keep things moving offensively,
(01:03:42):
and Mathern is going to be that guy now with
how to burn out. Nim Hart is going to be important,
don't get me wrong. Ni Smith's going to be important,
don't get me wrong. But Rick Cardisle has stressed, Look,
the way that Matheren needs to be a score is
to be a shooter that is shooting within the scheme
of our offense. And the scheme of the offense is
such that it is fast paced and he's going to
get multiple looks. But you're not going, hey, we're going
(01:04:05):
to Matherin and now you're isolating and you're getting away
from that quick movement. But rather, you are shooting within
the first second to two of getting the ball. I mean,
I'm saying second or two generically speaking, but you are
shooting the basketball within a precise and quick level of
when you are receiving the basketball. And that's not always
(01:04:26):
been his game. And so I think when you looked
at his efficiency of shooting from the outside and shooting
at a high percentage in Game one, that is a
good sign because what it means is he's not having
to isolate back down or penetrate to the his Matherin's
(01:04:46):
game to this point in his career has been getting
to the line by penetration for the most part, and
then maybe that's setting up his outside game.
Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:04:58):
I think you're going to see him get his points
almost more so from the outside and then eventually kind
of like the Colts, right the opposite of the Colts.
The Colts are, you know, working things in terms of
the smaller play and then working out. I think for
Benedict Mathern, it's going to be starting on the outside
then working your way in in the way that you
want to do it. But that's one of the things
(01:05:20):
to watch tonight because he is undoubtedly Matherin a dog
mentality guy, a get out of my way guy, and
there are times they've needed that. I thought during the Finals,
for example, in Game three.
Speaker 2 (01:05:40):
He was huge.
Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
He was huge, and then in Game four he was
a disaster. Frankly, if we're being honest, I mean he
had the I think it was Game four he had
the two off ball fouls. He he also missed the
free throws, and I think he was somewhat stagnant in
the way that he was moving and he is gonna
(01:06:05):
have to be more fluid. He's gonna have to be
of quicker release this year. That's what they're expecting of him.
That's what they're asking of him. And I'm curious to
see if we see it. It's gonna be a fascinating
year because how long does nim Hard get you know,
how many how many miles can you put on nim Hard?
How much tread can you get on that without McConnell
(01:06:25):
there at the beginning of the year. And I do
think that you also preserve McConnell a little bit because
he is so important and they still are under the assumption,
the expectation to believe for the hope that when Haliburton
comes back, you can still get like a two year
push while Siakam is still in prime and under contract,
and you're gonna need McConnell's energy and mcconnald's contribution in that,
(01:06:50):
which means you've got to spare him.
Speaker 3 (01:06:51):
A little bit. Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:06:53):
Indiana has a coach. We knew that, but now they
have a coach that is long term in Bloomington. Kurtis
signal Eddie Inking a big deal and they have a
basketball exhibition tonight two big things that Jeff rab Johns
has been keeping an eye on from peagus dot com,
and he is going to keep his eyes off the
keyboard just long enough to join us next. That song
(01:07:14):
will be playing in Bloomington tomorrow for homecoming for Indiana
and Michigan State. Also exhibition in basketball taking place this weekend.
Joining us now from peaks dot com Jeff rab Johns
to talk about that and more. There's news on both
sides of it, So Jeff, I will give it your prerogative.
Football basketball you'd like to start with?
Speaker 3 (01:07:33):
Which? Oh? Start with football?
Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
Man got to right, I mean, listen the I want
to get to this. How much of and maybe entirely
I don't know, you know, I think Indiana knew probably
at some point that this reality was there, that Kurt
Signetti was going to have to be extended. They were
going to have to dig into their pocketbooks because, as
(01:07:58):
you know, just the what he is doing and the
bigger programs that we're going to be. And when I
say bigger, we can get into that, I mean that's
I'm saying that in air quotes. But how much of
this was simply reactionary to news a rumor of Penn State.
Speaker 3 (01:08:12):
I was not reactionary. They actually started this process several
weeks ago. They just looked at the landscape and knew
where he was just from a financial standpoints and from
a length standpoint wasn't going to be what he deserves
for what he's accomplished. And so they started the process
at least three weeks ago. That's why I was told
(01:08:34):
that they, you know, agents and Scott Olsen and had
discussions as far as okay, you know, this thing is
not a one hit wonder. It's pretty clear, and what
do we think we meaning the agent and Indiana, what
do we think makes a lot of sense? So at
(01:08:54):
least three weeks ago and this process started.
Speaker 1 (01:08:57):
Jeff, let me let me give you a perspective, and
then I want you to either you know, just expand
upon here because I think you'll agree, but certainly tell
me and feel free if I'm wrong.
Speaker 2 (01:09:08):
But I was thinking about this yesterday.
Speaker 1 (01:09:12):
It is a remarkable story and one that there will
probably be a thirty for thirty someday on this turnaround
of Indiana football. But I also feel like this goes
back to Indiana being ahead of the curve in terms
of creating collective preparing for the NIL, seeing the perfect
(01:09:36):
or imperfect storm, whichever way you want to look at it.
Of between the transfer portal and the NIL, Indiana acted
proactively more so than virtually any school in the country,
and it was football as opposed to perhaps basketball, that
was the the biggest beneficiary because it allowed Signetty to come.
(01:09:56):
It allowed him to bring, you know, a lot of
his roster with him, to bring his entire staff with him,
which is also big. But in addition to that, to
just be able to be out front in building a
roster and then taking advantage of what was essentially an
evening of the playing field amongst big programs in college football,
(01:10:19):
and Indiana is the program that has most benefited your thoughts, I.
Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
Think it's a piece of it. I don't think it's
the reason for it. I think Signetti, Briant Haines, Mike
Shanahana the reason for it. Obviously, if you didn't have
a chans for portal and you didn't have an IL,
you can't rebuild a roster in one year. But Indiana
(01:10:46):
was proactive. They were They didn't embrace an Il before
he be came to be officially, you know, everybody knew
some form of player compensation was coming, and Indiana uh said, Okay,
this is what's coming. Let's get on the train, Let's
get in front of the train, let's drive the train.
(01:11:06):
Let's go. While some schools were like, oh, I don't
know what, what's this terrible thing that could could? You know?
Indiana was like, let's go. So it was a piece
of the puzzle. But I think the biggest thing was
the hiring of Signetti and him just his his his blueprint,
his style of coaching, Brian Haynes, his defense, Mike Shanahan's offense.
(01:11:30):
I think those are the biggest things. You know, you
look at it right now, there's one school in the
country where we're midway through the season, you know, six
games in Indiana. Six now, there's one school in the
country that's top four in scoring offense and scoring defense,
only one in a university. So I really think that
the Signettes plan. Brian Haynes on defense, Shanahan on offense.
(01:11:54):
I think those are the bigger reasons. And you know,
those those two guys have been with him since they
were part time division to assistant coaches making out eight
grand a year. Think about that. Everybody talks about what
Signette is making, which obviously is life changing money, no question.
But he went from making four hundred and twenty five
four hundred change changed Madison to making eleven point six million. Okay,
(01:12:19):
obviously a huge change. But if you're making four hundred
change changed Madison, you're doing fine. Think about the coordinators.
Think about their lives, Think about their journey eight Gillian
Bryan Haynes eight million to two in, Mike Shanahan eight
grand to one point one million. Think about how much
their lives have changed, and they've earned it. They You know,
(01:12:39):
there's there's other coordinators around the country making similar money
who are not achieving in similar results. So I think
I'm not saying I think disagree with your theory. I
think your theory is a piece of it. Certainly Indiana's
embrace of the whole concept of nil, But there are
other schools who have a lot more nil, especially for
a football at. Oregon's one of them, and Indiana's went
(01:13:02):
out to Oregon and kicked the button.
Speaker 1 (01:13:04):
Well, but the thing about for me and I guess
you know we know this, I guess in Indiana. But
do you feel, Jeff, that the you know. I mean,
I'll go with Paul Finebaum. I mean not to like
go with the low hanging fruit here, right, but like
he still is like, well, I don't know they made
the right move. I'm not convinced this guy's a great coach.
I mean, at this point, it's got to be a bit.
I mean, I'm like, he's seventeen and two. I mean,
(01:13:25):
come on. But what I'm saying is it feels like
this is the sustain of this that as college football
continues to evolve literally year by year, Scott Dolson in
Indiana seem to be staying at the front car of
the roller coaster here and keeping everything behind him. And
(01:13:46):
I'm impressed by that. But I also may be off
base on that. But in other words, I don't think
this is going away in any way, shape or form.
Speaker 3 (01:13:55):
Agree. No, No, that's they definitely embraced it. And yeah,
they are trying to stay in front of that. They're
working a stand in front of that. They certainly are,
you know, doing all those things, you know, with intelligence,
with purpose, And I think Scott Dolson's deserves a ton
(01:14:17):
of credit here. You think about the fact that less
than ten years ago, Indian's football coach is making head
football coach was making basically right around one point nine million,
Tom Allen. And now you're willing to pay so many
eleven point six which is market value because I'm telling
you right now, I'm not guessing. When I tell you this,
(01:14:38):
Penn State and some other people would have gladly paid
first think Naty twelve min off a year.
Speaker 2 (01:14:42):
I totally agree.
Speaker 1 (01:14:43):
I said twelve to fifteen honestly, like an Alabama or
Penn State twelve to fifteen easy.
Speaker 3 (01:14:49):
And the low watt bulbs like Paul Seinbaum, who is
a low watt bulb who has a paid shill for
the SEC, wrote a book called My Conference Can Beat
Up Your Conference? Now works for ESPN, which is a
contractual marketing partner of the SEC. Those people are of
(01:15:09):
no count, They no longer matter. They're paid shills. It's like, Okay,
you're getting paid to shill for your conference, So what
you're gonna say is what you're gonna say because you're
paid to say it. That means what you say has
no merit.
Speaker 2 (01:15:23):
And Kurt Signetti has said as much, has he not?
Speaker 1 (01:15:25):
I mean, didn't Kurt Signetti basically say like, look, we're
at a point now where you've got people that are
speaking on behalf of a conference and it's dividing it all.
Speaker 3 (01:15:33):
And other people have said it as well, and it's true.
You know, Paul feine Mom no longer matters. Anybody listening
to Paul feinn mom right now is either just an
sec fans who wants to hear somebody say something good
about their conference, or is an idiot. Okay, I mean
the only people who listening to fall Fine mom right now,
really they're just idiots. I'm sorry, no offense. It's a
(01:15:54):
great country. You're allowed to be an idiot, but those
of us who aren't idiots are allowed to lucky look
at you and go you list time Line.
Speaker 1 (01:16:01):
I do like the time when that Harvey Upnke called
into his show to say that he poisoned the trees
at Tumor's corner.
Speaker 2 (01:16:05):
That was at least, you know, entertaining, right.
Speaker 1 (01:16:08):
Yeah, but that's that's your market audience, right right.
Speaker 3 (01:16:13):
That does say something about who you're aiming to. Yeah,
but anyway, gosh, I just called people IDIOTNY radio show.
That's gonna get me in trouble, isn't it. Jake, what's okay?
Speaker 2 (01:16:23):
I can called it every day. You're kidding me. The
more the merrier, right, Well, yeah, there we go.
Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Did you like Kiss when you were a kid? Did
you like the band?
Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
Kiss?
Speaker 3 (01:16:34):
Said about it? He's threely passed away?
Speaker 1 (01:16:35):
Were you afraid of Kiss? I was terrified if I'm
a little older than you. But like when when Kiss
was in their prime, I found and even still to
this day when I see the big spike boots like it.
Speaker 2 (01:16:47):
Kind of.
Speaker 1 (01:16:48):
I'm not saying I don't like their music. I'm just
saying the gimmick side of Kiss scared me.
Speaker 3 (01:16:54):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
Is that is that odd?
Speaker 3 (01:16:56):
No? I remember, you know, because yeah, you're a little
maybe were similar ranges, but anyway, you know, it's like
we in the in our gosh, we're sound like old
farts here, but we've heard music on the radio before
we saw.
Speaker 2 (01:17:10):
Music correct correct.
Speaker 3 (01:17:12):
And you hear a song, you're like, oh man, that
thing really thumbs. And you know you're out there, you know,
playing basketball as a little kid, or you know, on
your bike, riding around with your boys or whatever, you know,
and then all of a sudden he turned on MTV.
And you know, MTV at one point time actually played
music videos. People don't realize that. But god, we stand
all right now, Jake. But anyway, you know, like you
(01:17:34):
would hear a song for maybe weeks, and all of
a sudden you would see the people singing on MTV
and that was your first visual who are these people?
You didn't know? You know, maybe if you got you know,
one of the you know, magazines, but it was a
monthly magazine. And but then so it would be weeks
before you see who was singing a song. First time
(01:17:55):
seeing kids that was that was Jaria.
Speaker 2 (01:18:00):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 1 (01:18:01):
It was Yeah, it was not unlike the first time
that like you saw the uh the disclaimer on an
HBO movie that said brief nudity or strong sexual content.
It was like, I think something just changed here, right,
like like this this is not yeah something something's new here,
something's different. And that was definitely the case. I'm telling
you my sister. I have an older sister. I mentioned
(01:18:22):
it earlier. She had the Kiss a Live two album
and it had the picture. It was a double album
and in it there was the pyrotechnics and Gene Simmons
and the blood coming out and the boots, and I
mean it was, like I mentioned earlier, it was like
the Flying Monkeys.
Speaker 2 (01:18:36):
And the Wizard of Ozz, Like, what in the world
are we doing here? I'm terrified? But the music was cool.
The music was cool. Hey, Jeff.
Speaker 1 (01:18:43):
Obviously Indiana basketball it is interesting, and I'm not going
to get into the whole thing of like this Indiana
and now football school versus basketball school. It's an athletic
program that has, you know, obviously one side of it,
on the basketball side, which has great fans, support and usiasm.
But at the same time, I think there's a lot
of curiosity as to what we are going to see
(01:19:06):
this year out of them. The thing that is the
most intriguing to you about Indiana basketball now is they
have an exhibition. Is it tonight or tomorrow? I think
it's tonight the exhibition, right, yeah, Okay. So the thing
that you will be looking for in that or that
maybe is of intrigue to you that you were looking
to either see if it does or doesn't go a
certain way, would be what shooting.
Speaker 3 (01:19:29):
Shooting. They their roster was primarily about adding shooting, multiple guys,
a multiple physicians who can make threes. You know, we
watched them three games then in Puerto Rico. They've been
open practices. So we've had, you know, multiple viewings now
and they're going to take threes and humphrees. So the
(01:19:51):
this game, the exhibitions tonight, then against Baylor at gambridgefield House,
even even the games through November, I'm gonna be watching
shooting because this is a you know, a roster that
you know, they they weren't able to go get like
a traditional post player. They weren't able to get some
(01:20:12):
traditional things. But you've got guys like Read Bailey out there,
who's a center on paper. And there were times in
practice where like when quote the other team, you know,
not his team, but the other team, you know, scrimmage
makes a basket, they throw it into him. He's turning
around bringing them off the court, and the other center's going,
oh crap, what do I do here? And there were
(01:20:33):
times that they had four guys on the floor who
had made a three, either in the game that was
being played for talking about Puerto Rico, or in the
scrimmage of practice. We watched and reed Bailey can't make three.
He just he just didn't at that particular juncture. But
to me, I think shooting is the most interesting game.
It's it's a modern style. It's just a far more
(01:20:56):
just It's just it's just a better brain at basketball
than I used played the last four six, eight years.
It's just a better brand of basketball. So I don't
think they're oldly talented. I think you know, Technicum Reason
and Marna Rookers and are probably the two guys should
look at first and say, Okay, who's gonna go each
points most night? Those guys are, uh taking Connor away
at the point, can be disruptive as a as a
(01:21:17):
defender on the ball. You know, Reed Bailey can be
a mismatch guy. Uh. Trent Sisley, Uh from from Heritage
Hills down there in the southern part of our state. Uh,
you know he he's really battling for minutes. But I think,
to me, the number one thing you think about when
you look at this roster, when you watch them play,
when you watch them practice, it's just a shooting. They've
(01:21:39):
got multiple guys who can actually make threes. And I
asked Darn to reads about it. We were up in
Chicago for Big Ten Media Day last week and I
just asked him, I said, what what what? What's like?
I said, somebout what's one of the most important things
for your team to do well. And he said shooting, shooting,
and more shooting. And he said, we love taking the three.
We love hunting the three. We're gonna guys should can
(01:22:00):
make threes. And so yeah, to me, number one thing
I'm looking for here the first few weeks, how do
they hit the ball?
Speaker 2 (01:22:07):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (01:22:07):
Lastly, and this is probably the most important, Robbie, Okay,
I'm taking out Michael Jackson's Thriller and I'm taking out
Money for Nothing by Dire Straits because those are the
obvious answers. I know that you are a fan of Prince.
I still have your album for you. But when you
think about early young first years of MTV introduction to
(01:22:28):
Jeff rab John's give me the two or three songs
or music videos that jump out in your mind?
Speaker 3 (01:22:35):
Oh man, yeah, okay, let's see.
Speaker 10 (01:22:42):
You.
Speaker 3 (01:22:42):
Definitely Money for Nothing would have been clearly number one,
clearly number one.
Speaker 4 (01:22:51):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:22:51):
Who else who would be there?
Speaker 2 (01:22:56):
Let me give you a couple on this again. I
might be ahead of you in years here.
Speaker 1 (01:23:00):
I mean, most people are gonna say video killed the
Radio Star because it was the very first video. We'll
take that one out too. Always something there to remind
me by Naked Eyes. For whatever reason, it seemed like
that was on like twenty four to seven.
Speaker 3 (01:23:11):
I know what, I know what Actually okay, uh, Phil
Collins something in the air tonight where he just hammers
the drums.
Speaker 2 (01:23:19):
Okay, okay, that's fat.
Speaker 3 (01:23:22):
You hear it on the radio and you're like, Okay,
that's cool that you see him do the whole thing
where like they're playing and he's like singing slash sing conking,
you know, at the air at the beginning of that,
and then walks up those stairs, gets behind the ground boom.
Speaker 1 (01:23:36):
You ever wrapped around your finger sting was just like
dancing around candles during Wrapped around your finger And that
one I remember Cindy Lapper was like a Cindy Lopper
was working a drive in during she Bop.
Speaker 2 (01:23:49):
That one jumps out at me.
Speaker 3 (01:23:51):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:23:52):
And then, like I mentioned, Naked Eyes always something that
remind me, there was a and then Human League Don't
You Want Me?
Speaker 3 (01:23:58):
By?
Speaker 1 (01:23:58):
The Human League seemingly on like every hour or two.
But I'm telling you, those were the glory that was
back when I was waiting, just killing time before I
could watch Ted Kitchell and Randy Whitman hit Baseline jumpers.
Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
You know what I mean. I mean era long ago.
Speaker 1 (01:24:10):
All right, Rabbie, we appreciate the time as always. Jeffrab
johnspeaks dot com on the Java House Peel and poor
guest line always a pleasure, RABBI enjoy the weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:24:18):
All right, Jake, appreciate you man. And I still got
to I still gotta pay you for that Princes album.
Speaker 2 (01:24:22):
I still have to get the album. That's the first thing.
Speaker 3 (01:24:24):
Right.
Speaker 1 (01:24:25):
If I'm down, I'm blimington this weekend, I'll bring it along.
And we got I was at a music store in
California with Michael Young and we were looking at old
albums and Jeff rab Johnson I just happened to be
talking and it turns out that he I got him
a vinyl album of Prints in the Revolution from Purple Rain,
the Purple Rain album. I bought it on vinyl for him.
(01:24:46):
All right, when we come back, we do have two
things to get to. Number one, who's in and who's
out for the Colts. We will let you know exactly
that coming back. And a four pack for the Indie
Fuel tomorrow night Military Night at the Fishers Event Center.
It is fabulous, Shannon and I will be there. Danny
from Beechgrove who won earlier, will be there and we're
(01:25:07):
gonna do it with Get to Know Your Listener style
at two nine ten seventy. If you want to go
to Military Appreciation Night for the Indie Fuel on this
the opening weekend of hockey in Indianapolis, give us a
call now. We'll get to Know your Listener next and
I'll let you know who's in and out for the Colts. Hey, Jake,
(01:25:29):
have you noticed that all that Corbin sounds a little
like Andre the Giant Corbyn. That's a compliment or not
a compliment. I've not heard Onto the Giants speak, so
I I.
Speaker 2 (01:25:40):
Saw him in The Princess Bride, so I say it's
a compliment. Okay, that's cool.
Speaker 1 (01:25:44):
He seemed like you'd be a fun guy, right, Yeah, absolutely,
totally totally good. Good point here from Anthony take on
me by Aha. That is a quin Is it quint
essential or quint essential either way? That is an essential
MTV Early Year music video for sure, one of the
(01:26:05):
great ones. Kenny Moore will be in the mix for
the Colts coming up against the Chargers in Los Angeles
on Sunday at Sofi Stadium. That from Shane steike In today. However,
Ashton Doolan and Josh Downs are both out. Ady Mitchell,
as we talked about earlier, will indeed play. So those
(01:26:29):
are the things to keep an eye on. The fuel
tickets to give away, and I believe now I'm fairly
certain of this as we check in with Cindy, who
was the first to dial in, and I believe that
Cindy is already one of our existing twenty nine thirty
or thirty one female callers. Hi, Cindy, how are you good?
Speaker 11 (01:26:49):
How are you?
Speaker 1 (01:26:50):
I'm correcting that right. You've called the program before, so
we can't We're trying. What we're trying to do here.
Cindy is up our numbers and while I you know
what I mean, I try to keep track, and it's
not hard to keep track of our female listeners because
there's only thirty, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (01:27:06):
Are you Cindy Denise? Is that right?
Speaker 6 (01:27:09):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:27:09):
No, because we have one woman who called in and
we gave her two names so that we could fudge
the numbers, because we're not above doing that, you know
what I mean, fudging the numbers on this Cindy, have
you been to the Fishers Event Center. I have not
what side of town do you live, Cindy, If you
don't mind.
Speaker 9 (01:27:25):
Me asking, I actually live in Camby.
Speaker 1 (01:27:30):
Camby is if I'm not mistaken in correctment from is
that south southeast?
Speaker 2 (01:27:33):
Is that right?
Speaker 3 (01:27:34):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:27:34):
Okay, okay, southwest.
Speaker 3 (01:27:37):
Sorry.
Speaker 1 (01:27:37):
Fisher's Event Center is fabulous. It's absolutely spectacular. Indie Fuel
for Military Appreciation Night coming up tomorrow night. We have
a four pack to giveaway. Would you be interested in
attending set event, Cindy, Yes, seven o'clock, puck drops, six o'clock,
doors open, Cindy, you're on your way. We're gonna send you.
I see that, Sindy, send her. It's exactly where we're
(01:28:00):
gonna do. Kevin Bowen joins us next, speaking of this
radio station, the morning show and the lineup thereof let
me get quickly for you up to speed on the
way it's going to work for tonight because it is
a busy night of college basketball, and that means a
busy night for all of us Indiana and Marion. That
is an exhibition game that is being played tonight at
(01:28:23):
Assembly Hall that can be heard on our sister station
ninety three point one WIBC at six point thirty tonight
now also at six point thirty, Butler taking on Kevin's
beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball team that can be
heard on our sister station ninety two point seven Fuego
So ninety two point seven FM is where you can
(01:28:46):
hear Butler and Notre Dame at six thirty, and the
Pacers and the San Antonio Spurs preseason game tonight right
here on this radio station ninety three five one to
seveny five to fan that is at seven thirty. Kevin
joins us now on the program. He has been out
at Wall fifty sixth Street at the Colts Complex and
Kevin I mentioned it earlier. But for those that may
not have heard, please update us on who Shane Steiken
(01:29:08):
says will be in and who will be out for
the game in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Speaker 11 (01:29:14):
Yes, so Shaveris War Josh Downs, the two guys in
concussion protocol will both be out and then Ashton Dolan
chest injury for him, he will be out. Does sound
like Kenny Moore the second will play Now he only practiced.
He wasn't practicing today so he's only practiced two limited
days since he got hurt three weeks ago, so I'd
(01:29:35):
be curious how much he will play, But it does
sound like the plan is at least for Kenny Moore
to give it a go.
Speaker 1 (01:29:42):
And in addition to that, in terms of curious how
much he will play, Kevin, I put Adie Mitchell in
that same category because there's going to be necessity to
call his number. But he also has been in the doghouse,
no question about that. Shane Stiken did elaborate a little
on that, correct.
Speaker 11 (01:30:00):
Yeah, so ad will dress and will play, which is
obviously a change from certainly last week and I think
pretty much the Raiders game where he didn't play a
meaningful snaps of the fourth quarter. But you know, how
do they replace downs? You know, when you looked at
it last year, Jake, it was mainly Mitchell and then
a little bit of Douling. Well what's happened since then?
Mitchell has proven to continue to be not very reliable
(01:30:23):
and now Doling is out, So you know, how do
you do it? Certainly, Tyler Warren's presence I think alleviate.
Speaker 3 (01:30:28):
Some of it.
Speaker 11 (01:30:30):
You know, I thought Anthony Gould had a really nice
training camp and he's more in that slot role.
Speaker 8 (01:30:35):
You know, he's only really been a return man.
Speaker 11 (01:30:37):
I don't even know if he's played an offensive snap
in the NFL, so, you know, body type wise, kind
of what he did a little bit at Oregon State
was that slot wide out.
Speaker 8 (01:30:47):
You know, perhaps they.
Speaker 11 (01:30:48):
Promote Lakwan Treadwell or coleman Owen off the practice squad.
But again, I probably moved some guys around, you know,
maybe even you know, Pittman does so much dirty work
in the middle of the field. I see, you know,
him maybe getting moved around a little bit there. But
I don't think you'll have just hey, player A is hurt,
so player B slides into that role. I think it'll
be kind of by committee.
Speaker 1 (01:31:09):
I'd like to know in the morning show, which you
guys does the dirty work. Who's the Pittman of the
morning show.
Speaker 11 (01:31:16):
Oh boy, that's a great question. Yeah, that's a great question.
I mean, I part of me would like to say Mark,
but I mean Mark, You never know when Marx is
playing animal, I mean Mark sad Mitchell.
Speaker 8 (01:31:28):
Mark's playing animal.
Speaker 11 (01:31:29):
Sounds you just I mean, you never even know what
you're gonna get from Mark. You know, one minute, all
of a sudden, he's on a Bears ran the next minute.
Speaker 1 (01:31:36):
Marks kind of like Anthony Richardson because every time I
turn around, he's out for the week.
Speaker 2 (01:31:39):
Right.
Speaker 8 (01:31:40):
Oh boy, that's excellent. That that maybe that might be
your best work of all time. That's tremendous.
Speaker 11 (01:31:46):
I know, yeah, I think, thank you, yes, thank you
Corman for that. You know, I said that Caleb today.
Caleb Zuber did a great job filling in for Mark
all week long. And you know, I kind of thank
Caleb in the final sigma of the show today and
I said, you know, I I thank you, but I'm
sure we'll see you again because I think Mark has
thirteen more vacation days now and Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
You're you're not kidding, man, you know the.
Speaker 1 (01:32:10):
It's interesting, Kevin when you look at Kurt Signetti and
the fact that you know, we just talked about it
with Jeff rab John's But I'm just gonna go conventional
or generically speaking, years from now, we'll look back and say,
Penn State made Kurt Signetti a lot of money because
the timing was perfect to go ahead and lock him in.
Is ad Mitchell making Alec Pierce a lot of money?
Speaker 8 (01:32:36):
Maybe more money in Indy?
Speaker 11 (01:32:37):
I think Alec Pearce is going, that's what I money.
Speaker 2 (01:32:40):
That's what I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:32:40):
In other words, Alec Pierce is a guy, and Alec
Pierce deserves credit because Alec Pierce has shown a versatility
as a receiver that we had not previously seen. Maybe
Daniel Jones has something to do with that as well.
But the if there was going to be a passing
of the torch of hey, we've got a deep ball
guy or an in space guy in eighty Mitchell, So
(01:33:02):
what do you bring into the table in negotiation, I
don't know that the Colts can say that, right.
Speaker 11 (01:33:06):
Yeah, it's definitely a great point you bring up. I mean,
I'd have to take a closer look at the free
agent list for next year. I want to say, you know,
maybe you let Brayden Smith walk. It does seem like
they're intrigued by Jalen Travis, their fourth round pick out
of Iowa State, who's got into some jumbo packages last week.
You know, at some point you got to pass the torch.
(01:33:27):
You know, they obviously passed it with Will Fries to
Mac Gonzalez and Ryan Kelly to Tanner Bordolini. You know,
pretty much each year, let's say you have four marquee
free agents. Five marquee free agents. You got to pass it,
especially if you're going to pay a quarterback. So where
are they going to do that again? Pierced I think
is going to be in high demand from around the NFL.
So yes, I would think that, you know, he maybe
(01:33:50):
indeed views it as hey, we need up this price,
and let's be honest. Shane Steton clearly has had eighty
Mitchell issues and you know, assuming that everyone is that
again next year, you know, GM and head coach, I
think that matters. You know, we're here two weeks ago.
What would Shange Siken's punishment be for Ady Mitchell? Would
it just be, hey, speak in front of the team
(01:34:11):
on a Monday, apologize and let's move on.
Speaker 8 (01:34:13):
Well, no, it wasn't that.
Speaker 11 (01:34:15):
It was you know, pretty much bend some week one
probably wanted to keep him inactive until pier Scott hurt
and then obviously he was a healthy scratch last week.
So we'll see if Mitchell can change that over the
final eleven games.
Speaker 1 (01:34:29):
When I look Kevin, a lot of people have asked
me this. Kevin Bowen is our guest. He's on the
Java house. Peel and Port guest line Jake twenty five.
By the way, the discount code for twenty five percent
off from Java House Kevin. The several people have asked
me this, and admittedly I mental hurdle on the last name.
Speaker 2 (01:34:45):
That does not make me unique.
Speaker 1 (01:34:46):
But the Colt's rookie JT defensive lineman or defensive end specifically,
that just has not been able to crack rotation yet.
Maybe I'd know the last name and have more fluidity
in saying it if there was reason to have done so.
Speaker 2 (01:35:00):
At this point.
Speaker 1 (01:35:01):
What is holding back there is that because of who
is in front of him, or he just has not
been able to make a step.
Speaker 11 (01:35:08):
Yeah, JT Tuimalolau. I look at it in a couple
of different ways. What the Colts would tell you is, hey,
he's our fifth defensive end.
Speaker 8 (01:35:17):
Let's start there.
Speaker 11 (01:35:19):
So when healthy, that would be Quitty pay Laatu, Lasu
Sampson epucon Taekwon lewis supposed to be the four above him,
And the Colts would say, hey, when we play the
run heavy teams, we want an extra defensive tackle to
be dressing on game days, so that therefore we'll have
five of those and only four defensive ends. That's when
you see him being inactive, and then you know, when
(01:35:41):
you play the past happy teams, then you address him
as the fifth defensive end. Now, I think a little
bit certainly has to do with you're not getting enough
from him, because I don't think you're getting enough from
the guys above him on the depth chart to warrant
necessarily you dressing them. So you know, to me, this
(01:36:03):
is such a big storyline for Sunday. The Chargers, frankly,
are in one of the more dire situations at offensive
tackle I've ever seen an NFL team.
Speaker 2 (01:36:11):
No kidding, they are.
Speaker 11 (01:36:13):
Starting Last week they started their fifth and sixth offensive tackle.
I can't even tell. I don't even I don't even
think the Colts have a sixth offensive tackle on their
practice squad. To be honest with you, this week, maybe
it looks like it's gonna upgrade the fourth and fifth
assuming Joe Aalt doesn't play. So you know, we're talking
about a cold sea line room that has three first
round picks, two second round picks, two third round picks,
(01:36:36):
the fourth and fifth. I mean, they're all highly highly invested,
resourced individuals in that room. You better show up, and
I think that is a massive, massive key for Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:36:48):
Yeah, Kevin, Kevin Bowen our guest. The the defensive line itself.
And it's interesting because I was talking earlier this week
the Chargers, Okay, they are right now, they are really struggling,
obviously protecting Justin Herbert. I mean, I come, I totally
get it. And and the Colts on the other side
have done a remarkable job of protecting Daniel Jones. More
(01:37:11):
on that in a second. But in terms of the
pass rush for Indianapolis, where would you grade it at
this point? U?
Speaker 8 (01:37:20):
D plus, maybe C minus.
Speaker 11 (01:37:23):
You know, I want to be a generous greater, which
Lord knows you could have used a few of those
back in the day, particularly at Kansas.
Speaker 2 (01:37:30):
You ain't kid Yeah, I in again, Jake.
Speaker 11 (01:37:34):
I'll go off like what you've invested. I mean, you
have put so much into that room. I want to say,
you're the top five, top three highest paid defensive line rooms.
So I'm not even talking where they were drafted, you know,
based off what they've done in their career, second contract,
third contract for a few of those guys, you are
paying them and have invested into that room for it
to be elite and so I think that matters. I
(01:37:55):
think you are grading on a scale when it comes
to that. So I mean on this is varsity versus freshman,
your D line versus their O line, particularly at tackle.
You know, coming on Sunday, the question is, you know,
will it play out in that manner? I mean, if
anybody wats the end of that Chargers game and look
at what Herbert had to do on the final drive.
(01:38:16):
I mean he is getting just I mean under siege
from Miami's defensive line and he makes you know, Ludini
like plays to save the game that'll be up for
the Colts. You know, can you get to him and
then obviously get him down because just getting to him
is not enough. Given how a you know, great of
an escaper, he can be Kevin.
Speaker 2 (01:38:37):
When you look though at.
Speaker 1 (01:38:40):
And there are areas where I will give Chris Ballard
a lot of credit because we either harped on him
to address something and then he did and did so
now we're seeing you know, their results in that. And
then there are other areas where he has been proactive
in addressing it, but it's never taken off. And pass
(01:39:00):
rush is one of those. It's like just repeated each
year it seems as though there's the next guy that's
gonna be the guy. Okay, does that speak more to
the difficulty in the NFL of finding edge rushers or
is it more so just an area that has been
a vapor lock for Chris Ballard.
Speaker 3 (01:39:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:39:23):
I mean I would say if you made me pick
one or the other, I would say the ladder. I
don't want to act like finding edge rushers is a
slam dunk by any means. But you know, if you
go back and traill bash them was a third round pick,
and you know what's his name, the kid from Rutgers,
Kimoko Turre was a second round pick. And then you
know Ben Bannagu was a second round pick. And you know,
(01:39:45):
Taekwon Lews has been a nice player, so I don't
know if you group him in there, But you know,
Quity Pay a first rounder, Niola Dango second rounder. Again,
there's just been a lot of drafted investments, and you
know Quitty, for example, kind of one of those ones
where all right, Chris explain this to us. You know, Michigan,
he really didn't put up prominent sack numbers. They were
(01:40:07):
banking on man that size and that ability to do
this three cone drill and that test. We think it'll
lead to more, and you know, I would say from
a pressure standpoint, it hasn't. You know now in year
five of his career now quit, he's done more than
you know, some of those other guys that I mentioned,
certainly some of those early draft picks there. So yeah, again,
(01:40:28):
I don't want to act like you just draft one
and it's a slam dunk lock that you figured it out.
But you know, to draft whatever five six in the
first three rounds and to really I mean, none of
them have double digit sacks, and many of them didn't
make it to the end of their rookie contracts. Are
certainly even debated about getting a second contract to them.
I would say probably the.
Speaker 1 (01:40:46):
Latter Kevin Bowen, our guest Kevin. This particular game, you
know we talked about justin Herbert right is there and
look at I set off the top of the show
in August. If you would have looked at it, the
Chargers are one of those games that jumped outhere, you like,
that's gonna be a tough one. Whoever would have guessed
that now the Colts would go in not only as
(01:41:07):
the team with the best record in the AFC, but
also some of those that we thought would be hanging around,
maybe even fading a little bit. Some of that's injury,
I get it. But when you look at the Chargers
aside from the tackle situation, we talked to Matt money
Smith about that yesterday, the voice of the Chargers. What
area of susceptibility beyond that do you think the Colts
(01:41:29):
are going to try to exploit and what area of
the Colts specifically talked about will be their challenge.
Speaker 11 (01:41:36):
Yeah, I think the charge has been really poor stopping
the run, especially the last few weeks. Khalil Mack, I know,
has gotten back to practice. He would be a very
welcome addition if.
Speaker 8 (01:41:45):
You are the Chargers.
Speaker 11 (01:41:46):
But again he's been out about a month, so is
one week of practice enough for a guy of that age.
So again, your run game a strength against their run defense,
not a strength you know, should be advantaged Colts there.
You know, I would say that this gets back to
the past rush shake. An area that is worrisome is
I think their overall depth at white out, you know,
(01:42:07):
looks like they're gonna get Quinton Johnson back, who's been
a pretty good whiteout for and they still have Keenan
Allen who's making plays at his age, and Lat McConkie's
been a really good player in his early NFL career.
You know that depth at wide out. I mean, those
are three pretty good dudes. And again, your depth at
corner is definitely being tested. So I would say that
is something that falls on the warrisome scale. I don't
(01:42:29):
get the sense that the Colts are, you know, overly
impressed by what the Chargers have done defensively.
Speaker 8 (01:42:34):
They've been really good in the red zone.
Speaker 11 (01:42:37):
But I don't think this is like Arizona last week,
for example, where they're super exotic pre snap and it's
gonna take a lot now. I think the Colts feel
like they should be okay there, but you know, still,
it's been probably more some of its parts and how
the Chargers have played defensively this year.
Speaker 1 (01:42:53):
Kevin, who did the who did your son pick?
Speaker 2 (01:42:55):
Have you done it yet?
Speaker 3 (01:42:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (01:42:57):
I haven't posted it yet, but.
Speaker 2 (01:43:00):
Just tell me this which charge or helmet did you use?
Speaker 1 (01:43:02):
Because I mean there they have kind of a variety, right,
and they've they've got some friend yeah, although they seem
to have kind of settled on you know the powder
but but but which one did you go with?
Speaker 3 (01:43:12):
Which?
Speaker 11 (01:43:13):
I don't know if you've seen what the Rock and
Sunday shake, but the rock and it's called charger Power.
Speaker 8 (01:43:17):
I believe if I read.
Speaker 2 (01:43:18):
This, did we lose Kevin?
Speaker 1 (01:43:25):
Okay, hold on, we lost you for a second there,
So charger Power please explain.
Speaker 11 (01:43:29):
Yeah, I believe it's all gold. And then like the
powder blue socks and or like Herbert, you know, I
think he's a sleeve guy. I think it'll be like
a powder.
Speaker 8 (01:43:38):
Blue sleeve for him.
Speaker 11 (01:43:40):
I did see at one point this year they're going
back to the Navies. They're going back to Honestly, I
think of Billy Vullock in that jersey more than I
think of anybody else. In that jersey shows you how
how my childhood was. But as far as the helmet,
it was the white helmet with the light. He was
very confused. He kept on calling him the light. You know,
it's cults against the lights this week, and I didn't
(01:44:04):
really know how the lightning bolt, you know, would he
treat it like an animal, which usually animals tend to
have favoritism towards He tends to be on that side
of the aisle. So he's one five in a row.
Speaker 8 (01:44:15):
He was torn on on the pick.
Speaker 11 (01:44:17):
I will very much say that it was not an
easy pick for him. And yeah, hopefully you know now
my wife helps me edit the music on these videos and.
Speaker 1 (01:44:28):
Also can edit out the last one. If I'm not mistaken,
had some fecal chat, right, isn't that right?
Speaker 11 (01:44:33):
Yeah? And I I apologize up front. I just think
that's a state that we're in right now. I just again,
they say, and I felt this way about Joe Davis
the other night when cal Raley hit a home run.
Like when cal Rally hit a home run, it was
like Joe Davis was waiting to say big dumper, like
he couldn't.
Speaker 8 (01:44:49):
I mean, he couldn't wait to say that.
Speaker 11 (01:44:52):
And then we all we all laughed.
Speaker 8 (01:44:53):
That's the phase that.
Speaker 11 (01:44:55):
My children in right now with the word poop.
Speaker 3 (01:44:57):
M h.
Speaker 1 (01:44:58):
Well, so we're back to that, okay. So now here's
the thing. I just I feel like there's a bias
when your son is doing the helmet selections because he
knows the colt's helmet now right.
Speaker 11 (01:45:10):
Well yeah, yeah, but wait till you see this one. Yeah,
I mean, I guess I just kind of tipped my
hand a little bit there, and you know we went
back to you know, some people for a while there
thought he was right hand dominant, you know, he and
we keep the home team on the right side. So
you know, I think we're about to start to get
into some interesting circumstances. I mean, the more outdoor games,
(01:45:32):
you know, a trip to Pittsburgh, a trip to Berlin.
Of course, we won't go to Berlin for the helmet pick.
We'll go to our front sidewalk though, and you know,
we'll get outdoors and you know, the elements and the
leaves and you know, cars driving by.
Speaker 8 (01:45:44):
We'll see how he reacts.
Speaker 11 (01:45:45):
But five in a row is five.
Speaker 8 (01:45:46):
In a row. So it's hard to argue against his
success so far.
Speaker 1 (01:45:50):
All right, I'm looking, by the way in conclusion here
at the you said, charger power is what it.
Speaker 2 (01:45:55):
Is, right, the charger power.
Speaker 3 (01:45:57):
It's like.
Speaker 1 (01:46:00):
I kind of looks like, you know, to be honest
with you, they look very similar to and I can't
papoo this, and let me tell you why, Kevin. We
had Aaron Nesmith on I think it was last week,
and I mentioned to Aaron's Nie Smith that his new
balanced shoes are my favorite shoes, signature shoes amongst the
Pacer roster. And they are a bright, highlighter yellow with
(01:46:21):
light blue in it. And I told him, you know,
I was going to buy a pair of those. Do
you think I could pull off that? Look they're the
same colors as the Charger power look here.
Speaker 11 (01:46:32):
Oh boy, yeah, I mean yeah, yeah, I'll.
Speaker 8 (01:46:38):
Leave that up to Shannon.
Speaker 11 (01:46:39):
Part of me says no, you know, honestly, when I
saw the color this week, it reminded.
Speaker 8 (01:46:45):
Me of and I know you're a big fan of you.
Speaker 11 (01:46:47):
Know, Rasskellar beer garden mustard has met like Heinz mustard.
You have a last mustard a little bit lighter, and
I think you know the the Rasskeler mustard a little darker.
Speaker 3 (01:46:58):
If those two had a baby.
Speaker 8 (01:47:00):
I think that's what Justin Herbert will be wearing.
Speaker 2 (01:47:02):
All right, fair but great venue.
Speaker 1 (01:47:06):
The weather will be great, I'm sure out in Los Angeles,
Colts Chargers coming up Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:47:09):
Kevin appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (01:47:10):
I know you guys will be all over it coming
up Monday morning on the Fan Morning Show.
Speaker 11 (01:47:15):
Indeed, you boys have a great weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:47:17):
All right, Kevin Bowen joining us on the JAVA house
peel and poor guest line. I'll tell you what that
Rath Skeller mustard that Kevin just mentioned, and we've mentioned
this before, it is one hundred percent no joke. I'm
telling you, like we talk understandably and rightly so in
this town about the Saint Elmos shrimp cocktail sauce and
(01:47:39):
clearing you out.
Speaker 2 (01:47:41):
But that Rath Scalar mustard no joke, none at all.
Speaker 1 (01:47:46):
Uh Hey, Jake, this as part of our Friday Interactive
Makeup Friday? Are you still looking for employees at Quarrying Company?
As the owner of Indiana's favorite antique ball, I could
be the director of anti Absolutely. I love a j
query fun fact. I love antique malls. I love antiquing.
(01:48:10):
I'm not saying like love. I can't tell you the
number of times whether it be and it doesn't say
here which one it is. Southport Antique Mall, Midland Antique Mall.
I mean I love them. I'll walk through Middle, I'll
spend hours in there. I get fascinated by it, and
then I also feel old because they'll have like the
(01:48:32):
little Looney Tunes milk pint glasses from my childhood, or
lunch boxes which I know J and V collects are
a big thing. There are certain things that when I
see it, I'm like, man, totally nostalgic. But I don't
know that I would list them as quote antiques. But
I also love old, like black and white photos. There
(01:48:56):
was one Midland and Tiak mall one day. They had
a photo, a black and white photo and literally four
guys sitting around the table smoking cigars when suspenders and
ties from probably nineteen thirty and I was I so
badly wanted to buy it, and I thought maybe it
was weird. I mean, like, you know, I ain't I
ain't my place, ain't BUCA to BEPO, you know what
(01:49:16):
I mean, Like, I don't just need old pictures all
over the And I didn't know the guys, but it
was a.
Speaker 2 (01:49:20):
Super cool picture.
Speaker 1 (01:49:22):
So one hundred percent yes, will use a director of antiquing. Hey,
Jake loved the interactive Friday question. How are Donald Davidson
and Paul Page doing well? Would love to hear how
they're doing, and thank you that from Truck a Rob.
They're both well. Donald, I am fortunate well, both of them.
I'm fortunate enough to talk to on a fairly regular basis,
(01:49:46):
and both of them doing very very well and enjoying
retirement and enjoying watching races and talking about racing and
all of it. And each time I talked to you,
in particular, Donald, it makes me feel good, no question
about that. Speaking of which, it is Franciscan Health, Feel Good,
Good for the Heart Friday. And we tip the cap
to a regular on the program. We do it next.
(01:50:08):
It's a Friday. It is the bottom of the two
o'clock hour. You know what that means. It is time
for Franciscan Health, feel Good, good for the Heart Friday.
And I'm serious when I say this. Over the course
of the week, and I would have to think about this.
If we do three segments an hour and three hours,
(01:50:32):
that's nine segments a day. And then is it three
or four segments we do in an hour Corban, maybe
it's four. I'll just give myself credit for four.
Speaker 2 (01:50:44):
Three scheduled. Sometimes you do four.
Speaker 1 (01:50:46):
Okay, three scheduled and sometimes four, So so we'll say
three segments an hour for three hours, so nine sometimes ten.
So basically what I'm getting at is we do somewhere
around forty five eight segments a week. This one is
my favorite each and every week for a couple of reasons.
And yes, I get it. I totally understand that people
(01:51:07):
are like, yeah, man, we get it heart attacks. As
a matter of fact, this coming week, I believe Wednesday
is the five year mark for my heart attack. And
if you've had a heart attack, you know what that
you just you don't forget the date. So I appreciate
everybody bearing with me when I make reference to that.
(01:51:28):
But then I see things like JC that sent me
a message. Matter of fact, I will read it right here. Hey, Jake,
is part of your good for the heart Friday one
to let you know that my heart scan came back
all clear. Thanks a good Thanks again. It is good
to have that peace of mind. In fact, that is
great news and I am thrilled for it and for
all of you when it comes to a heart scan,
(01:51:49):
if you are over forty man or woman, and you
have one of the following risk factors a history and
the family of heart disease, or for yourself, a history
of heart disease, these high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity,
If you were at one time a smoker, or if
you were still a smoker, all of those things then
(01:52:11):
it is definitely important. But I would certainly say for
all of you the peace of mind of a heart
scan from Franciscan Health. It is just forty nine dollars,
you can pay out a pocket, you can self refer,
and the heart scan is not invasive, it takes it's
literally it's super easy fifteen minutes or so. I have
a buddy that just did a heart scan and immediately
they said, you know what you need to do beyond
(01:52:33):
a heart scan and do a heart stress test. And
that's the importance of the heart scan is you never
know what it might be able to find, and you
get with it from Franciscan Health a heart risk assessment.
So in other words, you're going to get kind of
a roadmap on your heart and what you need to
do and what things in terms of the roadmap for
(01:52:53):
your cardiovascular health that are there. Eight three three two
three eight zero six eight eight. I don't expect you
to remember eight three three two three eight zero six
eight eight. You can always text me twenty four to
seven and I'll get back to you as soon as
I can to let you know all of the information
on where to do it. Franciscohealth dot org slash screening
bundles is another place where you can get that information
(01:53:18):
to make sure that you are up to speed if
you will on the heart scans. And I want to
give a tip of the cap in this segment to
Debbie Antonelli. Debbie Antonelli, we have had on this show
on numerous occasions, of course talking about the Indiana Fever,
her work within college basketball, her work with professional basketball,
(01:53:42):
and her work with of course raising awareness. We've talked
about it a lot. In Special Olympics, her free throw Challenge.
We had her on the program to help a Special
Olympian get to Minnesota raise the money for that. But
she is going to be awarded in November and honored
with the Inspiring Sports Storyteller Award by the Indiana Sports
(01:54:05):
Corps coming up in November, and I wanted to spotlight
that for this reason, not just because Debbie is a
friend of the show, and not just because Debbie Antonelli
has utilized and you know, come on here to spread
her belief in being a champion for athletes of all abilities,
(01:54:28):
but also because I wanted to give her credit for
doing those things, but also to show that there is
this champion and being a champion for those that don't
necessarily always have the voice for themselves.
Speaker 2 (01:54:44):
And it is so easy. It is so.
Speaker 1 (01:54:51):
You know, convenient, and so obvious. When you go tonight
to a high school football game and you go and
you watch as Kyle Neddnrip, who we had on earlier,
is going to go do Pendland Heights in Shelbyville, and
he is going to feature kind of a behind the
scenes of what happens within Pendlan Heights football and yet Shelbyville,
here's a program that was winless just a couple of
(01:55:13):
years ago and now is sitting there still halfway through
the year with a five hundred record at four and four.
When you go to these games and you see and
it's wonderful to see the marquee athlete, the future Division
one athlete, but what you should probably also cheer for
and what you should also look for is that kid
(01:55:34):
that is out there and just being on the field
is their victory. Being on the diamond is their victory.
Being on the floor is their victory. You know, we
talked about it earlier when we were discussing with Kyle
and one of our former stories that we've told on
Feel Good Good for the Hard Friday, a young man
(01:55:57):
that was, you know, wanting to play sports, was a
little undersized, so began playing tennis instead of football, realized
that he was in need of a kidney transplant, was
able to get that and is now not only going
to play tennis, but also play high school basketball. We
talked about it on this show, but there are so
(01:56:17):
many students out there that just being on the sideline,
not even getting into the game, but being on the
sideline putting on the uniform is the victory. And you
don't know. I always go back to if you've seen
Ted Lasso, and I'm not going to spoil you know,
I'm not giving a spoiler here, so it's no spoiler alert.
(01:56:39):
But when Roy Kent is in the press conference and
he's talking about one of the players and he says,
you know, I don't know what's going on in his life,
and so when something goes wrong, I give him love
because I don't know, and we don't know with each
and every athlete what they are going through. But sometimes
(01:57:01):
it's very apparent when you see a special Olympian or
when you see a student that might not get an opportunity,
what it means to them, and I think that that's
sometimes what we need to focus on.
Speaker 2 (01:57:16):
I think we.
Speaker 1 (01:57:17):
Prioritize almost too much at times. And I get it,
you know, the division IE level player, but there are
victories all over the field. And Debbie Antonelli and her
ability to share that story to talk about her son, Frankie,
who is working his way through his own journey, living
on his own with down syndrome but overcoming those odds.
(01:57:40):
That's not coincidence that he grew up in an atmosphere
with a mother that was not saying you can't, but
rather saying, let's find out how and why you can.
And so for her to be recognized for that coming
up in November, when I read that, I was inspired
by it because her inspiration to others is inspiring, in fact,
(01:58:04):
to those of us that simply want to be able
to illuminate, to those that need the candle placed in
their hand, and so I appreciate it, and I salute
not only DeBie Antonelli, but the Indiana Sports Corps for
also bringing that to attention, kind of like how a
heart scan can bring to your attention if there is
in fact something that you need to be aware of
(01:58:25):
Franciscanhealth dot org. Slash Screening Bundles is the website. Eight
three three two three eight zero six eight eight is
the telephone number. We will come back part of Interactive
make Up Friday. John, I'll get you. You got a question
about the colts, We'll get to that the rest of
you as well, and we'll hand it off to John.
As part of our crossover from Love Heating and Air,
(01:58:45):
we'll do it all next four generations of a family
owned business that you got with Love Heating and Air.
And the way that you last that long in any
market for one hundred years, over one hundred years now
is with treating every customer like fans. And that's what
you get from Love Heating and Air. When you are
inviting and they are official and official Hihle Heating and
(01:59:05):
Cooling dealer. When you're inviting companies into your home to
work on things, you want to make sure you trust them,
and you also want to make sure that they are
doing it on the up and up with the integrity.
When you're talking about furnaces, air conditioning units you don't
know a lot about, you want to make sure that
they're being honest. That's what you get. They're not going
to make a small job a big job. They're going
to be honest and upfront and twenty four hour on
(01:59:25):
call maintenance and the very best of quality. All of
those things are what you get from love Heating and
air Love dash hvac dot com is the website three
one seven, three five three twenty one forty one. I promise,
like me, you will love these guys. Thanks to Jeff
rab Johns, Kevin Bowen for joining us on the program today.
Kyle Nenrip as well again. Look for his column on
(01:59:48):
put On on Heights in Shelbyville in the Indianapolis Star.
Speaker 2 (01:59:51):
I mentioned it is a make good.
Speaker 1 (01:59:53):
Interactive Friday, and joining in on that is John who
has been waiting patiently and has a cults question.
Speaker 2 (02:00:00):
Hi John, how are you good?
Speaker 12 (02:00:03):
You know it's interested in what Kevin Boone had said
when you'd asked him about the defensive line lack of productivity,
and he had mentioned Quitty Pay. I'll never forget. I
was watching the draft that night when they drafted Quity Pay.
I think he was the twenty first draft in the
first round. And when they do the draft, they then
immediately cut to the pundits for their opinion regarding that
(02:00:26):
draft pick, and I'll never forget. They asked Booger McFarland
about Quitty Pay and he showed videotape it was a
bull rush. It was a straight bull rush with a
complete lack of spin moves, and Booger McFarland said that
will not work at the NFL level. He has absolutely
no ability to spin. The bull rush will not work,
(02:00:49):
and it looks like he was right in retrospect.
Speaker 1 (02:00:52):
Yeah, it's interesting because John, I think and here's the
other thing, and I make this a lot this point.
Maybe I belabor it too much, but I think oftentimes
we assess and evaluate players understandably so on where and
how they were acquired. And Quitty Pay is the kind
of guy that I think he's to use my term,
(02:01:14):
he's kind of just a guy.
Speaker 3 (02:01:16):
You know.
Speaker 1 (02:01:16):
He's not terrible, he's sufficient, but he is not what
you expected when you are drafting to your point in
the first round and at sixty three, two sixty five, yeah,
I mean there's some speed there, but in terms of yes,
the rush itself excellent point and I think we saw
the same thing, to be honest with you, from Jerry Hughes,
(02:01:37):
when he was drafted. That Jerry Hughes was undersized when
he was drafted, going back to that point, and then
he developed that between when he was in Indianapolis and Buffalo,
and so that development changed Jerry Hughes in the trajectory
of where and what he was as a player. But
quity pay right now, John three sacks on the year,
you are correct. I mean it's an area that for
(02:02:00):
needs to be improved and built upon. JMB is at
one of the best places that he could be on
a Friday to talk about the Colts and get you
set a lot to talk about as a matter of fact.
But John, I got a feeling that not only are
you going to enjoy some great beverages, but a little
food today as well.
Speaker 10 (02:02:17):
The Hermanakis, the Herminaby and I love it when I
mentioned the Totten Nakis and people come in in order.
When I am here of the Toadan Nakis, that is
always a good thing too. But no, Jake, I'm assuming
you've been to the Castleton location. It has expanded. However,
every time I go and expanded. I'm telling you you,
being a person that you know the history of Indy,
(02:02:38):
do you remember what this place was called prior to
it becoming the il Emporium in nineteen eighty two.
Speaker 1 (02:02:44):
Now that's a great question because I know it's right
next to what you know, there's the fun new place
right next door. Obviously, Yes, I this is gonna drive
me nuts hit me with it.
Speaker 10 (02:03:00):
It was I think it was called Lefty.
Speaker 2 (02:03:01):
Was it Lefty? And Louise, does that make that ring
a bell? That sounds right? There was a Godbothery.
Speaker 1 (02:03:08):
I think there was a Godfather's Pizza in that same strip, mall.
I could be wrong in that as well, but I
mean it's and you are correct, though, John, in the
fact that the location and we're talking about basically eighty
second and Allisonville just north of it on the north
east corner there is where all Imporium is and it
has expanded now to essentially that entire which is fabulous, right.
(02:03:31):
And the other thing about it, John, that's amazing to me,
even with the expansion, it still is always full. But
they are so efficient in terms of the service there.
I mean, Shannon and I go there all the time.
It's unbelievable. There is I mean, boom boom boom. Man,
it is literally it turns out as fast as your
(02:03:53):
food comes out. Right there, it's fresh, everybody is awesome.
Might be the best place in Indy's.
Speaker 10 (02:04:00):
Memorable this area for me too, because Jake, back in
the late summer of nineteen eighty nine, I still wanted
to be a part of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation. And
I didn't have a lot of rhythm, but I wanted
to be a part of Rhythm Nation. So I bought
tickets to the Rhythm Nation tour at Marcus Square Arena
from some dude in the parking lot over here at
is it Kittles the furniture.
Speaker 2 (02:04:21):
Store of the SI across ye.
Speaker 3 (02:04:24):
The street.
Speaker 10 (02:04:24):
Yeah, yeah, me and rhythm That's how I became rhythmic
with Rhythm Nation. Was back in well the early fall,
late summer of nutgeenety nine. Rhythm Nation in that parking lot.
Very famous, famous moment.
Speaker 1 (02:04:38):
That I'll tell you what. There was another restaurant that
was up near that area. Do you remember, John, this
is going back. Do you remember a restaurant called People's.
Speaker 3 (02:04:49):
I do not remember people It.
Speaker 1 (02:04:51):
Might have been on the northwest side. People's had all
of the stools were were like people's butts.
Speaker 2 (02:04:55):
It was a little weird, to be honest with you,
but it's cool. It was a fun joint, right, I
love that is kind of weird.
Speaker 10 (02:05:01):
Do you remember Chalky's up here?
Speaker 1 (02:05:02):
I do remember, yeah, and I think actually, go ahead, John.
Speaker 10 (02:05:13):
The other thing I remember about the Ale is when
I worked at the other station, much like you did
back in the day before you did. In fact, at
the end of every stop set there was a thirty
second Ale Emporium commercial that played on cart back then
at the end of every stop set.
Speaker 1 (02:05:32):
That's that's Rhythm nation eras what that is basically, right,
I mean, that's that's going back For those that don't know,
that's basically talking eight track language there. You know, the
now al is is awesome. That entire area up there
is awesome. Like I mentioned, there used to be a
Godfather's Pizza, right, I think it was in that same
strip mall but Ale Emporium.
Speaker 2 (02:05:53):
John's going to be there. What he got lined up
on the Big Show, John.
Speaker 10 (02:05:57):
We're gonna have Hagen's gonna be out here. Joel a
Erics it's going to join us live because we continue
our Bad Influence tour of our own with Joel. We've
got Mike Wells of ESPN Radio Voice of the Hoosiers,
Don Fisher. We'll talk Signetti I you tomorrow. We've got
so much hoop tonight, collegiate hoop. We've got the Pacers
on the road in San Antonio College and then obviously
(02:06:18):
the cults of the Chargers coming up on Sunday, so
there is a lot in Oh Bob Lovell Indiana sports Talk.
We've got high school football tonight as well, So we
are locked and loaded and ready to go. Man, I
will take that baton and run with it like I'm
a part of Rhythm Nation right here.
Speaker 1 (02:06:33):
I appreciate it and we will throw it out to John.
Just a couple of minutes, you heard him mention the
college basketball tonight. Aget a reminder in terms of the
college basketball lineup for tonight, I you six thirty taking
on Maryon that is an exhibition. That game can be
heard at ninety three to one our sister station WIBC
Butler and Notre Dame. Also at six thirty our sister
(02:06:55):
station Fuego ninety two point seven FM, and the Pacers
in action tonight taken on San Antonio that can be
heard right here on this radio station. Job with the
loaded show Ale Imporium, plenty of time for you to
get up there and enjoy live and in person, and
we will be back with you at noon on Monday.
Have a wonderful weekend, avoid the wet leaves if it rains,
(02:07:16):
and I thank you for listening to Querying Company.
