I’m Jeremy Devens, and over the last 19 years I’ve looked at thousands of birth charts. But I still remember the first time I opened one and thought: what is this? You might feel that way too. That’s why in this episode of Quietmind Astrology, I’ll walk you through how to give your very first Vedic astrology reading—even if you’re a total beginner.

We’ll start with your own chart and focus on the Big Three: the Ascendant, the Sun, and the Moon. These three placements are the foundation of readings, and you don’t need to memorize hundreds of things to start interpreting them. I’ll show you a step-by-step system that makes astrology less overwhelming and more practical.

I’ve created a workshop to guide you through this. It’s normally $47, but you can access it free with the link in the show notes. In just 15 minutes, you’ll decode your own Big Three and begin seeing patterns that bring your chart to life.

Step One: Read your own chart.

The letters are the grahas—the Sun, Moon, and planets plus Rahu and Ketu. The numbers are the zodiac signs, not the houses. The Ascendant shows the body and personality. The Moon shows the mood and emotions. The Sun shows vitality and leadership. Start with keywords. Aquarius rising: unique, eccentric, innovative. Moon in Sagittarius: adventurous, philosophical, fun-loving. Sun in Virgo: a leader who thrives on systems and structure. Simple snapshots you can build on.

Step Two: Look at public figures.

Practice with celebrities, musicians, leaders. Find their Vedic birth time (Astrosage.com is great). Then decode their Big Three. Pisces Ascendant might look dreamy, intuitive, spiritual. A Capricorn Moon can reveal a stable, practical mindset. This way you see how astrology plays out in real life.

Step Three: Give your first reading.

Start with an interview reading. Ask open-ended questions about their personality, emotions, and leadership. “What is your personality like?” “What was your relationship with your mother like?” “What inspires you most?” You’re not proving anything—you’re gathering information and building experience.

Once you’ve listened, try leading questions that sound like predictions but invite confirmation: “Do you like to bring harmony to others?” “Was your mom adventurous?” Over time, you’ll see patterns across charts. That’s when you can confidently move from questions to statements—and people say, “It’s like you’re telling me my life story.”

This path is clear: first your own Big Three, then public figures, then interview readings. From there, astrology becomes a living system, not just memorization. The more you practice, the more accurate you become.

Key ideas from this episode:

"You need to experience astrology first (read your own chart) before you try to read others charts"

“The Ascendant shows the body, the Moon the mood, and the Sun vitality and leadership.”

“Instead of memorizing hundreds of things, use the nesting doll system—grahas, then signs, then houses, then nakshatras.”

“Your first reading should be an interview, not a monologue.”

(00:00):
I'm Jeremy Devins and over the last 19 years, I've looked at
thousands of birth charts. And I still remember the first
time I looked at a chart and waslike, what is this?
And you might feel that way as well.
So in this episode, I'm going towalk you through how to give
your first reading in Vedic astrology, even if you're a
total beginner and you can startwith your own chart.

(00:23):
And I made a, a Class A workshopfor this that is available at
quietmanastrology.com/big Three.It's $45.00.
But now you can get it for free with the link in the show notes.
So this is a chart if you're watching the video.
If you're not, I'll explain it. We have some things going on
here. We've got some lines, we've got

(00:43):
some numbers, we've got some letters.
What does it all mean? And if you can see the video,
like what do you see when you look at it?
No matter your level of experience, what do you see
here? Maybe you know, SA is Saturn, MO
is Moon, SU is Sun, and I'm going to talk from beginners to
experience. So hang in here.
If you're more experienced, if you're a beginner, then you want

(01:06):
to know what those shapes are and what those numbers are and
what those letters are. So the short version for now is
those letters are the planets, the Grahas.
These are the not just planets because Sun and Moon are not
planets. K2 and Rahu are not planets,
they are Grahas. And then we've got the planets
in there as well. The numbers are the signs of the
Zodiac, not the houses. So the number one is Aries, 2 is

(01:29):
Taurus, 3 is Gemini, and so on through the 12 Zodiac signs.
And then the houses are the shapes here.
So what we're actually looking at is drawing of what the sky
looks like at that moment when you're born.
So the ascendant is what is on the eastern horizon at the time
of your birth in the 7th house is what is on the western

(01:51):
horizon at the time of your birth.
And then from there we get all the placements in the sky.
And you can see this with beta astrology.
You can actually look at the skyat that moment and you'll see
that it is true to astronomy, unlike western astrology which
is actually based on the seasonsand not the actual
constellations. So in western astrology, if you

(02:11):
had a ascendant in Aries, it's likely back one sign and it's
now an ascendant. In Pisces, there are 6 days
every month where your sun sign stays the same.
It's in the middle of the month. So if you're born in the middle
of the month, your son might stay the same in the western end

(02:32):
Vedic system because there's nowa 24° difference between the two
systems because it's now 2000 years since that difference of
calculations has been playing out.
So you have this picture of the sky at the time of your birth
and then now what do you do withit?
How do you interpret it? So for those of you are a little
more experienced, you might alsosee things in the chart like

(02:54):
aspects and Karakas, rulers, yoga's, these kind of things,
what retrogrades are about. And these are now deeper aspects
that we're not going to go into today because what I want to
focus on 1st is addressing what you see in the chart at the most
basic level and then build on itfrom there.

(03:15):
So as you look at it, you might be thinking, Oh my gosh, I have
no idea what all these things mean.
There's 12 houses, 12 signs, 12 Grahas.
We work with 9 in the picture, 9main Grahas plus the outer 3
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. And here we have this image of
what? What are we seeing?
What are we looking at here? And you might be thinking like,

(03:37):
am I going to say something wrong?
Am I going to make a mistake? Is someone going to judge me?
If am I going to give someone bad advice and they're going to
make a big mistake in their lifeand blame me?
I don't want that karma, right? And if you're like me when I
first started reading charts, you, you just go blank.
Like you don't know, like what it what is this?
What do I say? OK, And then you start to know,

(03:57):
OK, I know that's Taurus. I know we have Rahu and Taurus.
But what does that mean? What do I say about it?
And then that's where I start togive you keywords and you can
start to make snapshot predictions as we go along here.
But you might be doubting yourself like, Oh my God, this
is too much. It's too much to memorize.
I don't have time for all this. And again, you can make this
simpler by not trying to memorize everything, but trying

(04:19):
to focus on a system of how to learn this.
And I talked about a nesting doll system in my mentorship
program. So instead of learning hundreds
of things, you learn 12 things. And these are the grahas, really
nine things. And if you know those grahas,
then you know the signs and the houses associated with them.
And then it starts to make everything easier.

(04:41):
And then from the 12 signs, you get the 27 nakshatras.
So it keeps going deeper and deeper.
And then we get to dashas and all sorts of deeper stuff in
transits. But again, that's all down the
road. And if you watch some random
YouTube videos and different sources, random things, then you
might be trying to wedge all of that into your first time

(05:02):
reading a chart and it's just too much.
It's overwhelming. Like you can't get all of that
without having a path to follow. So that path starts with the Big
Three workshop. Again, you can get it for free
at the link below. And then it leads into
eventually the mentorship if youwant to go all the way into
learning all the things that I have to share and all the things
you need to see to read the chart, but start with the Big

(05:23):
Three. And that's what the workshops
about helping you read your Big Three.
And if you are newer, maybe you see the video and you can see
what are the big three in this chart.
So we look for the AES, the Ascendant, the MO, the Moon, the
SU, the Sun. And we see the AES.
Ascendant is the number 11, that's Aquarius, MO moon #9 that

(05:46):
is Sagittarius. SU Sun is in number six, that is
what Virgo. So we have ascendant in the
Aquarius Moon in Sagittarius Sunand Virgo.
What does that mean? Well, now we start to use the
snapshot interpretations that are in the free workshop and you
can start to put that together. So we see the ascendant in the

(06:09):
1st house always in Aquarius. Just again, while you're
listening or watching. What does that mean?
What does it mean to have ascendant in Aquarius?
Well, what is the ascendant? It's the body, it's the
personality, it's how people perceive you.
It's the physical body. And what is Aquarius?
It is unique, eccentric, innovative.

(06:32):
And how do we know this? What we watch through patterns,
over time, through research, through experience.
And that's what we're going to get to in a little bit.
But we're still in step one here.
I'm just observing yourself and your own big three.
So we put those things together. The body is unique, the self is
independent, your personality iseccentric, innovative.

(06:53):
So Aquarius rising people tend to be very creative people.
We know over time, you may know a little deeper is that Aquarius
is an air sign and the air signstend to be quite intellectual,
very creative, very smart, very witty.
So this person's probably very clever, innovative, creative
into technology or interesting ideas and things like this.

(07:16):
So that's ascendant in Aquarius.Ascendant keywords plus Aquarius
keywords gives us a really nice baseline interpretation that we
can build on. And that's not going to tell us
everything, but it's a good start, a really good start.
And then we've got the Moon, thenumber 9, which is Sagittarius.
We're not going to talk about the houses yet.

(07:37):
For those of you more advanced, you might start to do everything
I'm applying here to the houses and then to the rulers.
But for everyone else, we're just starting out Moon and
Sagittarius. What is the Moon again?
The keywords are in the workshop, but Moon is the mind,
the mood. It's an easy one to remember.
Moon is mood, the mind, emotions, the mother as well,

(07:58):
and the maternal energy. If you are a mother, then this
is how you are as a mother and how your mother is with you as
well. You learn a lot through the
Moon. Sagittarius, what is that about?
Well, we can look at the symbol,we can look at the element of
it, but we know the keywords from all of that and all the
mythology of Sagittarius is adventurous.

(08:21):
What else? Outgoing, fun loving, loves to
travel. So the mood is fun loving, loves
to travel. Your mom, your mother probably
travels a lot or is very adventurous or very
philosophical. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter.
For those of you a little more experienced, Jupiter represents

(08:43):
wisdom and knowledge. So Sagittarius and Pisces both
have a level of wisdom and knowledge because they're both
ruled by Jupiter. So the Moon and Sagittarius, the
mind and emotions are philosophical.
This kind of person might be less emotional like a moon and
Cancer and more philosophical and more about having fun and

(09:05):
excitement because it's a fire sign.
Fire is about initiation and action, so the mood is more
fiery, more active, more fun, more free spirited, more
philosophical, more interested in ideas rather than maybe just
needing to vent or express or remote in the way that a water
sign might. And or more needing of that than

(09:29):
like practicality and grounding like an earth sign might like
Taurus or Capricorn. So the relationships help us
understand these things as well.So again, we're still in step
one, just understanding the big three yourself.
And there's a whole workshop about this.
I guide you through it. I'm using this example.
And now for the sun, it's in Virgo.

(09:50):
And the sun has what qualities? Well, it's the center of the
solar system. It's the spotlight.
It's when everything revolves around.
It's the light that brings life.So it's where we have vitality,
where we have life, and where wecan be seen as a guide for
others. Again, those of you more

(10:10):
experienced, you can apply what we're talking about here and
start to interpret some deeper stuff in this.
You can leave the comments of like, what do you see in the
chart? There's 8th house Virgo, ruled
by Mercury, all this kind of stuff, There's aspects, all
that. But for the foundation, it's Sun
in Virgo. And that is Sun being the
vitality, the creativity, the leadership, Virgo being

(10:33):
organized, detailed and practical.
So this person as a leader is going to be organized.
It would be good for somebody who's like a COO or project
manager, somebody who needs to be leading and organized
together or a home organizer, interior design architect, these
kind of things, especially if itends up in Chitra.

(10:55):
For those of you more experienced, Chitra is the
architect, Nakshatra Sun and Chitra would be a good
architect. But in general here, Foundation
Sun and Virgo is a leader who isorganized.
You get vitality through having systems and processes and
structure and routine and practicality in your life.

(11:15):
That's the snapshot interpretation, putting together
the keywords that are all in thethe workshop by my
astrology.com/big Three. You check it out, use the free
promo code. And now you've done that.
So let's say you've gone to the workshop.
It's just 15 minutes. I guide you through how to do
this for your own chart. Now you've got the big three,
now you've got some experience with astrology.

(11:38):
It's not just an intellectual thing.
It's not just a theory. You're not just memorizing
stuff, you're not just reading stuff.
You have experienced it for yourself and you know what it's
like to interpret your big three.
Now you're ready to do it for public figures.
So this is Step 2 of this process today and three steps to
it. So Step 2 is that you look at

(11:58):
public figures that you know well, like if you're really into
Madonna, look up her chart. Make sure you're looking up
vedicastrology.astrosage.com is a good resource for Vedic birth
charts. Like 95% of the stuff online is
all Western birth charts, and we're not using that here.
It's not true to astronomy, so we're not using that.

(12:19):
So we're using Vedic birth charts and this helps us really
understand the soul and the essence of the individual.
Western birth charts are pretty good for the personality, but if
you want to really understand the life path, the karma, the
soul, the timeline, that's Vedicastrology.
So we're looking at public figures now in their big three.
So whatever public figures you know well and love, try to find

(12:42):
their birth time. If they don't have the birth
time, skip it because we are going to look at the ascendant.
So we need the birth time to be accurate.
And the more famous they are, the more likely the birth time
is out there. So if it's like a president or
politician or a famous musician or singer or actor, actress,

(13:03):
it's more likely their birth time is going to be out there.
From biographies. If they've got a biography, they
probably got the birth time out there.
So you do the same process. OK, let's say that the ascendant
is number 12. So that's a Pisces ascendant.
What does that mean? The body versus ascendant and
then Pisces is spiritual. It is go with the flow.

(13:26):
It is dreamy, intuitive. So their body might be just
doing what feels good. So they're not so focused on
like bodybuilding or aesthetics as much as like feeling good in
their bodies. They might choose more
comfortable clothing, things like this.
That's an example of how the Pisces descendant might look.
Again, there's always many factors to this.

(13:48):
We got to look at other placements, of course, to give
really accurate readings, but this is the foundation.
Let's say the Moon is not in Sagittarius, but it's in
Capricorn now. So we've got a Earth moon, but
the Moon is around the Earth. So where the Moon of the mind,
the mood, the emotions is Capricorn, which is grounded,

(14:09):
practical, structured, stable. So this person has a stable
mind. Again, there may be factors that
cancel that out or other things that influence it, but that's
the foundational interpretation and so on.
So you do it just like that for the big three for yourself
first. That's step one.
Step 2, as you do it for public figures that you know and can,

(14:30):
you could talk about a lot of things about them without
needing any info, like you just know about Britney Spears or
whoever you grew up listening toor whatever.
And you can look at their chart and now you can start to see how
the big three play out for them. And then finally, Step 3 is the
title of the episode, How to Give Your First Reading is now
you have some experience, you'vegot some relationship to the

(14:52):
planets and signs, and now you can do that for others.
But instead of just do the reading directly and say, OK,
you have Ascendant and Gemini and that means you are this and
that for your first reading. I recommend that you do an
interview reading. This is one of the 11 templates
that I give in my mentorship program.
It's an interview. It's not monologue from you and

(15:15):
it's not you teaching them something.
It's not you telling them their life.
It's you asking them questions so you can better understand the
chart. And then once you got the
answers, you can show them wherethat shows up in their chart.
So this is the easiest form of astrology.
And it's what I generally don't like so much.
When other astrologers do transits and they say, OK, this

(15:37):
week this thing happened and of course it happened because the
sun was in Leo. It's like, that's not really
useful for anything. And unless we're doing a lot of
research and like meta analysis of past patterns, that can be
helpful. But it's very beginner level and
it's very good for starting out.So you can look at transits or
placements, or in this case, we're talking about just the big

(15:59):
three, ascendant sun and moon, and you might see, OK, they've
got ascendant an Aquarius. What is your personality like
and just ask them questions about their personality that are
open-ended. Not yes or no and not leading
because we're not trying to prove that Aquarius descendant
is a certain way. We're trying to get information

(16:20):
and experience reading charts and not just trying to prove
that we know something or tryingto impress somebody.
That was a mistake I made when Istarted out was I had no idea.
Just throwing darts in the dark of like, oh, you've got Saturn
in the 1st house, then you must be XY and Z.
And they're like, no, not really.

(16:42):
I'm like, oh, OK, I'm a little nervous now.
You've got Jupiter in the 1st house.
Well, that must mean you are this.
And they're like, I guess so, you know, so there's things I
wasn't seeing and missing and I was assuming that I got the
snapshot prediction, so I must know what I'm doing.
But that's really just the firstfoundational piece.
But to really start to do this well you need a lot of

(17:04):
experience with a lot of charts and to be very curious and open
minded and start to see where things might be cancelled out.
Or like for example they might have just the ascendant sun and
moon and different signs, but then they've got like 5 things
in another sign. So let's say the ascendant sun
and moon is just Aries, Taurus, and Gemini, and then they've got

(17:28):
5 things and Cancer. You're not even talking about
Cancer at all. You're not thinking anything
about Cancer, but everything they say is about Cancer
placements like comfort, home, being a parent, these kind of
things. And you wouldn't see that from
the ascendant sun and moon, but you would see it by having 5
placements in Cancer and realizing that's going to have a
big emphasis in the chart. As I've talked about in past

(17:50):
episodes, that's the big 3 + 3 or more placements in a sign is
really predominant in the chart. So as you do your interview
readings, you're in Step 3 and Irecommend you do at least one
and then you do more and you getsome experience with seeing how
things actually play out for people. open-ended questions and

(18:11):
not yes or no, not leading. You're just asking, OK, the
moon. What is your emotions like?
What are your emotions like? What was your relationship with
your mother like? If they are a mother, what are
you like as a mother? How would people describe you?
How have people described you? What has your life been like
emotionally? And they might say something
like, well, when I was younger Ihad all these Moody things going

(18:33):
on, but now I'm much more stable.
And that might be a factor of the D9 chart.
So now it's like, oh, there's a whole another thing to explore
here. Might be a factor of the dashes,
might be a planet factor of the planetary maturity.
And these are all things that you learn over time that you
don't need to know yet. What you need to know right now
is how to start to look at the chart and start to see things

(18:57):
and start to be curious about them and start to put it
together. So as you start doing this with
sun, moon and sun, you get to the sun.
You might say, do you have any sort of leadership roles in your
life? And what do you like as a
leader? Again, open-ended, not yes or
no, not just are you a leader, yes or no.
But how do you lead when you're in situations where you are the

(19:21):
leader of the group and what brings you vitality, what brings
you creativity? When do you feel most inspired?
These are all sun questions. What do people look to you as a
guide for? Wherever the sun is, you're like
a spotlight in that area. If it's in Virgo, people might
look to you for health advice. If it's in Leo, people might
just naturally look to you as the leader.

(19:41):
Like a lot of kings and Queens and rulers have Sun and Leo, the
King of Pop, Michael Jackson, somany people, so many presidents
have Sun and Leo or Leo ascended.
So naturally people look to themas leaders.
So again, you ask the open-endedquestion, like what do you show
up as when you are put in chargeof a group?
How do you show up? So you're asking open-ended

(20:03):
question, what's your father like?
The son is the father. If they are a father, what do
you like as a father? How do people describe you?
And again, you're trying to get as neutral, just open-ended
research as much as you can. And then the more you see these
things, you start to see. Oh, OK, I was right on about
this. Or actually I was way off and
what could have been that was making me inaccurate here.

(20:26):
Maybe it's because they had three or more placements
somewhere else. Maybe it's because the D9
totally changed the chart and ithad a total change in life.
Maybe it's the Dasha's bringing up difficult things.
Maybe there's transits bringing up different energies right now,
A lot of factors. Maybe there's an aspect from
Saturn you're not factoring in or aspect from Mars or whatever.

(20:47):
Those of you who are more experienced, you might think
about the ruler. So again, maybe there's the
ruler of the Sun is Mercury and that's debilitated.
So their actual ability to lead is challenged.
So rather than just being a straightforward leader of groups
and organized, they are a bit unable to communicate well and
they have difficulty with their communication and get feedback

(21:07):
that they could improve their communication.
So if you just ask about the Sun, you're like, why are they
talking about communication? Well, now you got to start to
look to Mercury. That's communication and that's
ruling this. So then you start to see these
connections. That all comes over time.
Again, that's building on that foundation of the big three.
So people ask me sometimes like I want to learn astrology step

(21:28):
by step. There's so many random things
out there. The first step is the big three.
Get your free chart, start to read your big three and then
start to look at celebrities andthen do an interview reading and
start to see how it plays out for someone else.
So again, in the interview, you're not trying to impress
them or prove anything or show them how much you know.
You are learning yourself and getting feedback.

(21:50):
And then when they say, oh, interesting, I can see where
that would be like the sun in Virgo.
What does that mean for me? And then you would try to
interpret that. And now you're asking questions
that are leading, right? So this is the last little tag
of this of like, OK, so you havesun in Virgo.
So are you organized? Do you prefer to be organized?

(22:15):
Do you like to bring systems andstructure into systems that are
around you and businesses and work and your life?
The let's say the ascendant is in Libra.
Do you find value in like bringing harmony and balance to
others? So now you do start to ask more
leading questions. After you've asked the

(22:35):
open-ended, not leading questions, now you can start to
do some research and you basically predicting, but it's a
question. And again, this is like the one
O2 level. The next easiest thing to do in
astrology is to just make a prediction.
But it's actually a question. So you're not trying to put your
neck out there and say, I know what I'm talking about.

(22:55):
You're just saying I think it might be this.
Is that true? Let let me learn with you.
Let me understand. And as you do this, you're
gaining more experience, more perspective, more accuracy, more
insight. And this helps you eventually
become a more accurate astrologer for yourself, for
others transits, for everything, for looking at all the areas of
life, health, wealth, relationships and purpose.

(23:17):
But it starts with this interview reading and then
leading questions in the interview reading.
And then you start to gather information and start to collect
notes and like, oh, OK, interesting.
This Scorpio rising said the same thing as this other Scorpio
rising. And it's kind of the same
energy. And the Scorpio moon said a

(23:38):
little bit differently and the Scorpio sunset a little bit
differently. So it does take time and
experience and practice to get good at this.
But to get started, this is a clear path for you.
Again, step one, get the workshop.
Use the discount code Kwi, My astrology.com/big Three and get
that $47 workshop for free. And Step 2 is you, if you've

(24:00):
gone to that workshop, step one and you've decoded your big
three and Step 2 is now you do that with public figures, let's
say at least five that you know well.
And you might be interested to find that those public figures
you resonate with have some similar stuff as your chart.
That's very common. And then Step 3 is now you find
somebody. You know what?

(24:20):
You can talk to real life human being and ask them questions.
Open-ended, not yes or no and not leading.
And then once they've you've gone through that and you've
kind of gotten all that you can get out of that.
And then he notes you can get now you do the leading questions
that are actually you trying to predict, but it's a question.

(24:42):
Was your mom someone who liked to travel?
That's moon in Sagittarius or moon in Capricorn.
Was your mom somebody who was tricked?
Was she religious? Moon in Gemini?
Was your mom very creative? Was she very talkative?
Was she very chatty, Moon and Taurus?
Was your mom very focused on finances and keeping the home

(25:02):
and taking care of home life or ascendant in Aries?
Are you somebody who's very ambitious and driven?
Right? So these are now the leading
questions you would start to askat the tail of the interview
reading. And with all this, you've done
your first reading and you've gotten some information and
you've gotten some experience, and now those questions can
start to become statements. And when you go forward from

(25:25):
here, you can start to make things that are statements with
confidence. And you've seen it enough times.
Looked at 15 charts of Aries descendants and you've seen that
they're all XY and Z. So when you look at the 16th
chart, you can say this energy would show that you're likely XY
and Z. And that's when they say, I feel

(25:45):
100% seen. Yes, it's like you're telling me
my life story. That's the kind of feedback, you
know that you're on the right track, but it comes through this
kind of process. And again, there are 11
templates. I give my mentorship program.
I give you the direct feedback from me and your peers and the
support and the training and theresources and the worksheets and

(26:06):
the workbook and the spreadsheets, everything you
need to do this step by step. And the first step is the big
three workshop. So that's free for you for
