Il teatro sacro del Medioevo nasce nella Chiesa e dalla Chiesa. Le navate e l’altare rappresentano la sua prima scenografia, i chierici sono autori e attori delle storie bibliche messe in scena e i fedeli sono i suoi primi spettatori. Questo fatto non sorprende se ci si sofferma sull’intrinseco carattere drammatico del rito cattolico. È sufficiente pensare alla suggestiva teatralità nell’ufficio liturgico del Mattino di Pasqua per comprendere il fenomeno, peraltro quasi paradossale, attraverso il quale dalla liturgia cristiana si stacca il germe da cui nascerà - verso la metà del XIII secolo - il teatro sacro vero e proprio, totalmente emancipato dall’influsso ecclesiastico. Tutilone, monaco benedettino di San Gallo, cantore e musico morto nel 909, creò il primo dramma liturgico aggiungendo al testo biblico un seguito di parole sue proprie e accompagnandole con melodie.
