Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is it mayo pizza.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
No, it's not male pizza. It'll never it'll never be
male pizza. Actually, Yo, what is up? Boys? How's it going?
And welcome back to another episode of the Rant Cafe
Anime podcast. I said, cafe Cafe. Okay, anyway, today we're
talking about anime. We made each other watch anime again, Recon.

(00:22):
I believe I suggested your anime, which was King's Avatar,
which is which is an esports anime, but it's also
like a Chinese anime. I don't remember this was a
specific word for it. I don't remember. Yeah, whatever that is. Jordan,
the anime dude, recommended another one of those I believe

(00:43):
called Ringing Fate. What up you Ordan? How you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yes, sir, what up? Everybody? Happy to be here?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
And then I recommended Ping Pong the animation which don't
don't do don't make those sounds. Don't make those sounds.
Don't make those sounds. On how are you? How are
you doing today, Recon?

Speaker 1 (01:03):
I'm doing fine, Thank you.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
I'm so glad to be here to talk about anime
once again and suffer with the boys, because, yeah, we
got some discussions to talk about, especially for Briggs' recommendation, Yeah,
let's do it.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
But also Recon is continuing to watch Berserk nineteen ninety
seven and I woke up to a message today saying
Berserk was amazing this week. Wowie, this show is starting
to make me realize who the true Black Swordsman really is.
And I will say, ah, that got me going, that
got me fired up. Let's talk about anime, do we

(01:37):
What do we want to start with today? Guys? What
are we thinking?

Speaker 3 (01:39):
I mean this episode was sponsored by China, so two
and a half. Yeah, we want to start with the
one that's that Briggs recommended, or.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Sure, the King's Avatar.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
That's my recommendation.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
That is Recon's recommendation from me, whichever one you guys want, Okay,
King's Avatar? I kind of hate did it?

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Did bet say?

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Had you even watched this one though? Or Riecon has
watched it? Ricon has watched it?

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I'm not a fan. It was very nice looking, but
something about a show where he's just like, I'm the best,
but he's not even like saying it, but it's just
like everything. Obviously, he was kind of forced to retire
due to circumstances that I can't even perfectly remember. And
then he just went and continued playing the game that

(02:30):
he retired from under a new alias, and people didn't
really know who he was. But he's still the best
because it's been playing for ten years. And it's just
like these mild, just constant flexes of like just I
don't know. I didn't really It looked cool, It had
some good animation. I liked the scenery, the interactions between
the boss and the main character. Yee yay, whatever his

(02:51):
name is, we're kind of cool. But for the most part,
I wasn't invested in the story and like the game
at all.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Okay, that's surprising.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
I genuinely thought you'd like it because it is very
popular and highly rated.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
You know, it makes me so happy that you say that, Virgo,
because I'm not gonna lie. This show was asked this
was this might be like the worst thing we've watched. Like, man,
I I'm not gonna lie. I never really look up
for reviews of shows, but this one I felt so
gas lit that I had to like look up afterwards.
I'm like, am I the only one that hated this?
And I only really see positive reviews.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
For it, bro, there is so much positivity. How can
you guys hate it?

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Go Like Okay, I guess what I did like about
it was like the soundtrack was okay for like some
of those slower moments, there was a little bit of
ambiance there, like the backgrounds were pretty good looking, and
then like anytime stuff was actually happening, I just hated it.
Like it was like I feel like I'm probably the
opposite of most people in that regard, because I'm sure
most people don't like those quieter moments and they want

(03:55):
to see overpowered band character winning the game easy. But
I don't know, I hated it so much genuinely.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
I don't think I'm the only person that has bad
taste around here.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Oh God, maybe maybe.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
It gets better. Maybe it gets better, because I agree
with Jordan regards like some of the moments between like
the boss and our main character, the quieter moments with her,
like falling asleep and him putting the jacket on continue
the game all night and then crashing and falling asleep afterwards,
like some like those things like oh, there's potential here,
and then he just goes into the game and he's
just flexing on everybody, and I don't know. I was

(04:32):
I was bored.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Granted, I don't have a lot of experience with games
like that. I've played a couple like Tower of God,
where it's like mostly like a an MMO type thing,
but you do do like dungeon diving with a with
like a party of people and you're hoping you get
good drops. And so maybe it's like a lack of
experience with games like that and like a pro scene
like that, But I don't know. Overall, I just I
had so much trouble getting into it. I was so

(04:55):
ready to binge all a ping pong, but I watched
this first and then it's like I was strugg to
get through it. It took up too much time. I
did like an hour long break between every episode.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Recon what do you like about it?

Speaker 4 (05:07):
I'm genuinely surprised, Like I like, we were talking about
all this Chinese animation and stuff, and then Brake suddenly said, like,
why don't you recommend kings Avatar. I was like, yea, yeah,
that that's a great recommendation. Yeah they would like that.
But then you both are saying you hate it.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
That means that.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
If I, if I literally recommend any other good Chinese animation,
you guys are just gonna hate it.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Then if you don't like this, you will hate the others.
I'm serious.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
You never know that.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
But we typically, I feel like, don't like the main
character and what's going on with him in the game,
we're not as into. So maybe a different, like a
different Chinese anime that's not an esports anime might might
work for us. Because then again, Jordan's is that it
was a Chinese anime.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Jordan's recommendation, yeah, so okay, And also this one was
a bit cheesy, and and maybe it's just like the
style of presentation. But like, have you guys ever watched
like those like Moby Sides I think it's called or something.
Have you ever been scrolling through a short surreel and
you get like an ad for like melodramatic h like
Asian drama like live action where it's like no, I'm

(06:20):
never I'm rich, but everybody thinks I'm poor or whatever,
and they just keep like it's it's like, uh, like
Darman type stuff like where it's like that's that's kind
of what it felt like. Some of the scenes where
like it has like that Uh, it's like has this
hint of maturity, like it's trying to act like it,
but it's like really not. I don't I don't know

(06:42):
it was.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
I assume that you you both just don't like the
type of the overpowered protagonist from the get go things,
So I get it.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
It's it's fine personally for me.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
I like this stuff.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
I quite like it.

Speaker 4 (06:56):
I mean, I like the direction that it was going
when I first watched it. You know, a badass gamer
and he's like super good at the game. He retires,
and then later on he just goes on a fucking
smurf account and just destroys everyone with picking the weakest class.
Like I thought that was badass, like held business class.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
How is it the weakest class? Is what I don't get.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Like, literally, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
That's the thing. I genuinely don't know how. He's a
fucking alass makes it.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
He makes it, he makes it look broken.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
I'm just I'm serious, I need to make so good.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
I didn't mind that part because he did have like
an understanding of the game because he's played it for
ten years, so he's probably able to make the most
of every class. I think there is a bit of
thought there. Yeah, and then uh, I guess, to like
clarify my point from earlier, I guess the thing that
made me think of like the uh the k drama
type stuff was whenever he's sitting in the cafe with
the boss lady and he's like, oh, yeah, by the way,

(07:51):
I am that pro that like retired. She's like, no,
you're not. And then like she sees him going, she's like,
you're not good even though like he's sitting there dominating.
It's like it's like that type of thing.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
He's breaking happen. He's like he done like three first uh,
like first kills on bosses that no one's killed before
that are new. He broke a time record, and he's
he destroyed her friend and and she's still like, yeah,
you're not that guy.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
He's just walking. He's just walking in the lobby and
everyone's looking at him. They're like, who the fuck is
this guy.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
There's a lot of overpowered protagonist type anime where they
try to hide the fact that there were a power.
He doesn't hide it or anything. He just like but
like he's just shown believe it, right, And then that
and then uh, whenever he retired and they announced on TV.
Everybody cried like that just sounds like one of those
stories off like and then everybody cried, like the whole
world stopped and just shed a tear attire. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
It was funny, bro, because he's the best in the
world and they're so upset there.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Like I don't even remember like exactly why he was retired.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
I know, like don't remember. His team was doing.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Some stuff like for for money that he didn't like,
and they wanted to use his, uh someone else's face
and then him playing or something, and he just wasn't
about it, so he had to have Yeah, I don't
know exactly what happened.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
But they didn't really have like a good reason that
they showed for it, right, It was like a business
numer Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
But like if he's the best in the world and
he's able to make all this money for you guys,
it's like these two guys, these two guys thought they
were so slick trying to make money off of him.
They could have made the money off of him normally
he was a.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Three time champ, Like they just had a three pet Apparently.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
They're they're just his teammates. Too jealous.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
His teammates are just too too jealous, so they decide to,
you know, try to sabotage the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
But it is what it is.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
He has no money after all this, either because he
was supporting his friends that like didn't make it in gaming,
and now he's working.

Speaker 4 (09:41):
He retired, he lost all his sponsorships. He's this anime
is basically like zero.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Two hero type shit, you know what I mean?

Speaker 3 (09:49):
Yeah, another thing I thought was kind of weird. He
maybe it's maybe my lack of understanding, and the only
one I thought it was weird. He was like, so
are you guys hiring like for like the night manager
or what have you, And like he technically like apply,
like applies, talks to the girl whatever. He's supposedly working there,
but he's just since there gaming all night, yeah, every night,
like that, Like that's the job.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
I mean, I do think some of those like night
places like that, I could imagine the job is just
they need someone there, they need a worker there just
to sit there and whatever. And he just sits there
and games the entire time, I suppose.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Right, But like usually there's at least a little bit
of something else.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
It would have been like, oh, he's gaming and then
gets up and like takes out the.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Trash, you know, yeah, like to do the register like
once or something. Yeah, something besides it just going out somatly.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Like like he's gaming and then like people are walking
in and they need to scan in and he's just like,
you know what, you guys should let yourselves in. I
don't care, like some type something with the Internet cafe
was like the most interesting part to me, And that's
a great point that there was. He just went there
and gamed and did nothing else.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
But which granted there is like a prequel movie and
then there's like three seasons of this and.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
Like yeah, yeah they have. There's a lot of seasons
for this.

Speaker 4 (11:06):
That's why that's why I was telling you guys, because
this is so highly rated of a series, they kept
making more seasons because it's just too good.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Yeah, which I don't understand it, but like that's what
I'm saying is like at least there's stuff out there, right,
So there's we're probably not getting the whole picture.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
But now I know you both hated and the big
question is what would you give a rating for the
show based on the first episode I.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
Gave it a one point out of ten.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Wow, I want to bring my down to three.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Which, like I said, it had those soft moments that
like looked decent, like the I love the backgrounds. The
backgrounds were great, and they had some good soft music
kind of plan as it like panned over those. So
that was that was what bumped my score up.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
I like the scenery. I don't know how they did
the scenery with type of different technology or type of thing.
I like the scenery. That's the point.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
That's what Chinese production studios do. Man, They're really good, right.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Right, Well, speaking of questions, Jordan's recommendation Ringing Fate.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Ringing the Fate, which I'm gonna be honest, was the
show I hadn't even seen yet. I knew a little
bit about episode one prior to like recommending it, but uh,
but yeah, I'm interested to hear what you guys thought
about it.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
Briggs, you can go first if you want to do so.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
The first like ten minutes, I'm like, what the fuck
is this the show that Jordan recommended? Is this the
right one? Am I watching the right one? I'm like,
what is this?

Speaker 3 (12:30):
Like?

Speaker 2 (12:30):
It just looks like a cartoon.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
But the art sound is very cheebiush right.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
In art style. But as time went on throughout the episode,
you learn about the world what Coong is. It's like
an after life where you wake up with no memory.
There is these tournament or like fights that go on
and you're wagering a currency and memories that it's a
resourced tied to memories, and you learn more about went

(13:01):
through these characters. They were humans in their past life
and they all went to this afterlife calm after they
died and then this in this life after life, they
have this cheeby form, but they were all humans. So
you have these characters that you're not super no, they
don't know them super well, you're not super attached to
and through like them recalling what happened in their past life,

(13:23):
you kind of get more attached to them. And then
they lose those memories and stuff like that when they
lose fights, and I guess the overall goal is to
make enough of this currency to go to the gate.
Is that like an to go to heaven or like
another after life.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
I think it's basically like reincarnation, reincarniate, So that's kind
of the goal.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
And I was say, like ten minutes in.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
It's a cool concept.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Yeah, very cool concept. But I just want to say,
ten minutes in, I'm like, what the fuck's going on?
By episode three and the end of episode three, it
was amazing. I loved it.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Bro.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
Episode three got to me. I was kind of the
same way, Like I thought it was pretty good, just
very polished and how it looks like it very fluid
for the action scenes and whatnot, very expressive little interactions
they had, Like it was cute. And I knew going
in that they had live action shots for the memories
and whatnot because main girls like a hospital bound and whatnot.

(14:16):
We find that out in episode one, so like she
didn't really have a lot of memories from that life
that uh, but got seeing that play out the way
it did in episode three. Like I didn't expect to
love it as much as I did. I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
So just for reference for people, how do I how
do I explain this? So yeah, our main Oh. Now,
another cool thing about the memories is that you only
really kept the memories that you liked, and then the
ones that you didn't like you kind of didn't include.
So one of the characters is a dad and like
he had all these memories with his daughter, and then

(14:50):
the daughter in the reincarnating world had no memories with
the father because she had a very traumatic upbringing, had
a traumatic way to die and was killed and stuff
like that with her dad. There, so like the different perspectives.
Oh my god, bro, she.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
Gets abandoned and like nobody loves her. That's how she
ended up in this world.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
The main character.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
About the main character, Yeah, the main character.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
She gets abandoned.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Yeah, yeah, anyway, recon what are your thoughts on ringing Fate.

Speaker 4 (15:18):
I like the concept that you explained obviously, and the
whole thing is just about boxing and all that stuff
that this protagonist because because of her tragic past and
all that, she picks up boxing all of a sudden
to try and let all these emotions out. And I
like the way this is going so far. How she

(15:39):
finds this piece of helmet that talks. It's it's a
bit annoying.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
But it's good. I like it. And with the helmet
she powers up.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
She turns into this big gega chat form and just
destroys everyone.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
And yeah, it's cool.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
I like it.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
Good action scenes and all of that.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
It's interesting. The dynamic between the helmet and this character
and this main character.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
Yeah, and I, like I said, I still haven't seen
all of this myself, so take it with a grain
of salt. But I do like a couple of the
concepts that threw in there, as far as uh, the
guy that was like a bear, and like the people
that are less human looking, it's like based on it's
kind of based on how they were in their previous life.
So like we see that that robot helmet thing is
like a person, right, but like how he ended up

(16:26):
that way, it must be related to kind of however
he was in his past life, right, So we don't
know that yet.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
But and also the amount of memories you keep and
the amount of currency you have is based on your
actions in your past life as well.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Correct, Yeah, and then they go for it recom.

Speaker 4 (16:45):
I was about to say, they wager all that currency
in the boxing matches as well.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
So you know how that.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
That that guy with the main character, he fucking betrayed
her in.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
The end, bro Oh yeah, betray in the.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
He wagered all of her ship so that he can
win and beat her down.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
But Kara karama yea karama.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
Yeah, karma came quick for there, but like, honestly, like, yeah,
a new person in a new world. Like, I like
the realistic aspect of this, especially when you're when they're
dealing with like life and death. Here people are stumbaggs
and are going to take advantage of those newbies that
come into the world with no memories.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
Yeah, and I'm not that kind of comedy by surprise.
And then uh got as far as seeing the good
humanity though, O can we talk a little bit about
episode three because the other part about the system of
how things works that I really find engaging is that subconsciously,
you know, the more that stuff or the the more
kan or whatever you have, the more memories you have,

(17:46):
the you know, the less you lose your memories. But
subconsciously the memories that you keep, it's not like you choose, right,
it's like whatever you want.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
To keep the most.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
So episode three, the directions that it took the fact
that his daughter didn't really want to remember you know,
her dad or like how she learned boxing or whatnot.
But for him, we see the very last things that
he remembered, and like the last things he remembered, they
weren't like the glory days or anything. Uh, reminiscent of that.
It was like those painful memories of like how he
let his family down and how he wants to do

(18:17):
goodbye them, like even even in the past, like he
wants to give his daughter another chance at life because
he feels like he let her down. So it was
episode like broke me man, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
It was beautiful, Jordan, and I love the fact that
this guy who was a boxer in his past life
would fight other people, win the currency, the kwan or whatever,
and then go and fight his daughter and lose, basically
giving her the money that he couldn't give her in
his like when in his past life, giving her the
opportunity to have another chance at life and reincarnate or

(18:49):
go whatever other after life or another version of life
that there is after this Kong. Honestly, it was beautiful.
I was so sad at the end of the episode
because he's basically dead, right, I didn't watch up before.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
It was basically I've watched Epistood four either, but that's
the same impression I got. Yeah, and then uh, it's
it's weird because the director, like I said, I haven't
watched a ton of his other stuff, but it's the
same guy that did Link Click and it's the same
guy that did to Be hero X, which is you know,
it also has a bunch of different styles between two, D,
three D, et cetera. So it's like the chib cutiness

(19:20):
is so over the top that I feel like it
just contrasts really well with like going from that to
like live action for like the uh for the other
segment of it, right, so like going back and forth.
It's weird, it's unique, and it's.

Speaker 4 (19:33):
I don't know, I just know to Be hero X
doesn't way better though, with the transitions between.

Speaker 3 (19:38):
May two maybe, but I will say even if people
preferred to be hero X, the fact that this anime
fell so far under the radar is like criminal. Like
I checked yesterday on my anime list, two hundred and
forty nine people have this completed and on any list,
one hundred and thirty four have it listed as complete,
and it's like free and you little, Yeah, it's like

(19:58):
this is like the most I've ever watched, but like
it's so good quality wise, and.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
Sub hero likes is super popular already.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Which is wow wild to me. Yeah, it's crazy.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
So sometimes I use chat Ebt to remind me. I'm like,
what are the character names? Tell me what? Like the
summary of this show is again, please remind me of
what the fuck's going on. And it did it for
all of them, and then for Ringing Ringing Fate, it's like,
what the fuck is that? Like Chatcht didn't know what
Ringing Fate was and I'm like, it's a Chinese thing.
He's like, And then I linked it like, oh, this show,

(20:30):
like there's not enough online. People don't talk about this show.
It's crazy and it's so so good.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
It's good. I liked it. Remember Jordan, when I typed
on the sport.

Speaker 4 (20:40):
Asked, yeah, I was kind of lying about that it
was pretty hard.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
I figured there's a chance you genuinely didn't like it
because I in my head I was thinking about the uh,
the live action shots and stuff whenever I recommended it,
and I'm like, oh, crap, this is very three D,
Like this is very uh it's good looking through.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
Even yeah, but it's good looking. It's not crappy CGI,
it's really good.

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
Yeah, I know a lot of people out there, you know,
struggle with Chinese animation or no Chinese anime in general
because of the of the way the characters talk. But
if you can, you know, get used to this. It's
it's worth it, trust me, very worth it.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
And I always thought I also thought it was interesting
the opening and ending. Uh grant, I glanced whenever they
played on like whenever Briggs was watching it. And it's
in Japanese for like the new Read Up or what
have you, but uh, but for the original Chinese version,
like the opening and ending are in English, so like
that being the original version, like they're both bangers too,

(21:37):
so I always find that interesting.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Yeah, if I don't pay enough attention to openings and endings,
I should. I should not really.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
I skip them thankfully, it is fun.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
But I love it when they're in English for some
reason I don't know. It makes me feel acknowledged and heard.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
So I I use nine anime to watch it.

Speaker 4 (21:57):
And what nine anime does is put a blue bar
segment for the opening and the ending, and a skip
button to skip the opening and the ending, exactly what
I do.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
I usually don't for like the first couple of times,
and then eventually end up stip skipping them. But I
also like usually when the opening's playing, I'm vibing to
the song and I check my phone or something like
I'm not walked in on the opening visuals or like the.

Speaker 4 (22:21):
I watched them like once and just then skipped like,
I mean, got it, it's cool.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
I just want to get all on the show.

Speaker 3 (22:28):
It's probably for the best with most shows because a
lot of times it's very spoiler heavy. For this one,
I think it's just like dancing and stuff, mostly in
the opening, but it's like, yeah, he's in English.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
I hate spoilers, so another thing. I usually try not
to pay attention to the visuals. But anyway, my recommendation,
Ping Pong the animation.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
We didn't rate it.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
Oh, we didn't rate a ringing fade. I'll give it like.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
An I'll give it a seven, okay, like an eight.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
I like those first three episodes quite a bit.

Speaker 2 (22:56):
Yeah, I'll give it some point five. I feel like
episode three really got me hooked to watch more. But
the first episode or two, like I was like, oh,
this is pretty good. I like the concept and stuff
it does. Even for me. It took some time to
adapt to the art style because it's your GPS and
it's not really my preference. But as like I'm more
invested in the world in the concept. I didn't care
about it anymore, like the way it looked. It did

(23:19):
take me some time to adapt. Speaking of art style
and adapting to art style, Ping Pong and the animation
recon If you would like to go first, go bu.
You're crazy. You're crazy, You're crazy.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
So how is the three anime for this week? Would
you say this is your least favorite?

Speaker 4 (23:39):
Yes, this is definitely my least favorite. It is, okay,
trashy looking. It's just about high schoolers playing ping pong
and you got your overpowered three kids or whatever, like
they're so good at ping pong.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
But it's just crappy visuals all over the place.

Speaker 4 (23:56):
It's like it's all basically, this anime is all and
drawn visuals.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
It's all hand drawn. I don't like that.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
You're gonna make hate gone, you're gonna make all right.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
There's honestly, there's really not much this anime besides high
school and you know, there's a there's a championship coming up,
so they're all just practicing ping pong.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
Okay, click so good?

Speaker 1 (24:20):
Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
I don't. I didn't have a chance to rewatch Ping
Pong on the animation. I've watched it like four or
five times though, and I do love it. I don't
remember exactly where episode three ends, so I don't want
to spoil anything because I do think it goes way
beyond more than just ping Pong, but that's maybe towards
more later episodes. Jordan, just your initial impression and what

(24:43):
happened first, go ahead.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
Yeah, so I ended up watching up the episode four,
but I'll just talk about the first three. So you
also is a director I've avoided up to this point,
just because he always it's almost intimidating, how like all
the praise I hear for his stuff, right, Like it's
but it's very artsy. It's very like over the top.
It's like it's there at its core, but then there's

(25:06):
always extra to it. There's always more layers. And you
threw Kaiba at me last week and now you're throwing
ping pong and ping pong at its core is a
sports anime, right, I love sports anime. This lives up.
It's very good, and then it also has those extra layers, right,
very artsy, very animated, like I thought it looked beautiful

(25:26):
art style wise, it's like it's adapting like a nineties
manga or what have you right, or some older manga
like so art style wise, it's like maybe not like
the cookie cutter piece of Kai look that like gree
cod Bye like the most, but like this, it's animated
so well right, It's I feel like sometimes the more.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
I'd rather watch smartphone over this, I want Oh.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
God, that's crazy. Okay. I do think it looks quite
ugly at times, but the actual animation and the movement
I think is gorgeous and I kind of like that contrast.
But I could see how it could be hard to
maybe get into initially like I had with Ringing Fate,
Like the first ten minutes, it might be like what

(26:12):
the fuck is this show? But it goes way more
deeper than just ping pong recon Obviously, you only watch
three episodes.

Speaker 4 (26:20):
I would love to yeah, that three episodes, it's just
all about ping pong and that there's a championship.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
I would love for you guys to watch the full
thing and talk about it on a future week though,
like truly it's amazing.

Speaker 3 (26:32):
I'm finishing lots of stuff I've I've started for sure,
I still want to know, and then i'd need to
finish this as well.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
But I mean, I am watching all of Brazerk, So
if you want to recommend, you know, if you want,
you can recommend more episodes from some show that we've watched. Yeah,
if you want to, you can do that as well.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
But this one isn't just about ping pong recon all right.
That's the thing about sports series is the the surface level.
It's always about the sport, right.

Speaker 1 (27:01):
And it doesn't go to the does it go to
the extent LIKEIQ?

Speaker 4 (27:04):
Like Haiq was volleyball at first, but then like it
developed further and further also beyond the volleyball, is it
the same thing?

Speaker 3 (27:12):
I feel like Haiq is mostly volleyball, but it's very polished, right,
and it's very character driven. So and this is similar
in that same way where I feel like it is
very character driven. We see a lot about the uh
the main character and his buddy that uh So Sukimoto is.
I still don't quite have a grasp on him yet

(27:33):
because I've only seen those first three episodes, but he
seems very restrained most of the time. He doesn't really
want to make waves. He's not really that competitive, like
he doesn't want to win he thinks it's kind of
stupid to put like dedicate your entire life to a sport. Right.
So it's because of all that foreshadowing and because they
laid out the characters so well, I knew where episode
three was going, not in like this is obvious kind

(27:53):
of way, but like they laid it out really well
that like he's almost empathetic to a fault in like
for the people that do go all out, right, he
doesn't have that same desire to wins, but he knows
that they do. So like he's like, all right, I'll lose,
Like I don't you know, this is just like another
thing to kind of pass my day, right, Like he
doesn't have that to drive to win, and but he
has that talent and potential and uh, he's he's been

(28:17):
doing it for a long time, right, So it's it's
it's tackling some other things there. There's always more layers
to it. I don't know, I don't want to go
to dealy characters.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
In the first three it definitely deals with like the
idea of like winning and losing and like self discovery.
Why am I even playing this? Whoever?

Speaker 4 (28:35):
Why?

Speaker 2 (28:36):
Like how does these wins and losses affect each character differently.
Go it deals with like talent versus hard work. It
has friendship, it has rivalry, there's like and it goes
into some more things I don't want to spoil, but like,
real life is a is a thing when you're trying
to be an athlete. Real life is a factor, and

(28:58):
we'll see more of that future episodes.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
Yeah, and there's a lot of sports and stuff that
are very popular in parts of Asia that people dedicate
I mean, I guess this is kind of true for everywhere,
but people dedicate like their whole lives to it, right Like.
So we see the main antagonistic force of like these
first three episodes. I guess you'd call it Kong. He uh,
like he left home when he was eight, right Like,
he sends money to his family and whatnot. But like

(29:23):
Ping Pong, even though he had like one little hiccup
that like kind of set him back and now he's
having to play in Japan, like, he takes it very seriously,
right like. So it's like that contrasted with with characters
like Sukimoto that you know, he's takes it seriously to
an extent, but not he doesn't really have that competitive
drive versus like Peco, like his friend that like has

(29:43):
that competitive drive to an extent, like he wants to
be great, but he doesn't work for it, like he's
always skipping practice, he's always So it's like all these
different dynamics are being set up in these characters, and
like how they take the narrative from there is something
I really want to, really want to see.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
So have they been calling Sukimoto smile?

Speaker 3 (30:03):
Yeah? Yeah yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:09):
And that's another thing it deals with, like having fun
versus like taking things seriously, Like there's so much going.

Speaker 4 (30:16):
Look, I love table tennis or ping pong, whatever you
want to call it.

Speaker 3 (30:21):
Mm hmm.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
It's one of my favorite sports. But this just ain't it. Chief, This,
this just ain't it.

Speaker 4 (30:26):
I Mean they used to call me back in high
school the Prince of ping pong because I went to
championships and ship so I was really good at it.

Speaker 2 (30:34):
More more invested. If it's just about ping pong right now,
you shouldn't be like enjoying it. I know it's ugly,
recondo all those things that you push if you push
back past the art style and actually watched it, like
did you actually watch it?

Speaker 4 (30:48):
Yes, it's just really hard to get a grasp of
it because it looks ugly.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
It is quite ugly, I will say at times.

Speaker 4 (30:58):
Honestly, I would watch Berserk nineteen ninety because I'm starting
to really get into it more.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
But this one here just no, no, I can't. I
don't like the way the characters look.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
Honest you, if you watch it and actually pay attention
and continue to watch more episodes, I guarantee you end
up liking it.

Speaker 1 (31:15):
I'm not gonna watch any more episodes unless you, of
course recommend it.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
Yeah. I think for a future probably in my top
twenty five favorite anime I see. I personally love it,
but I.

Speaker 3 (31:27):
Also love I was watching peak anime for a bit. Yeah,
because there's so many sports anime I've seen already, Like
if you list one or name one, there's a good
chance I've at least seen it or read it. But uh, heyjo,
this is one I just yeah, cajo, I've seen it.
I love it, And this is one I just had
kind of put off, and it's probably one of the
better ones I think I've seen, right as far as

(31:47):
like taking this concept and the premise that is kind
of universal and can be taken so far and just
go in the extra mile with it and making it
like its own unique thing. I don't know, it feels
like it goes in above and beyond with the concept
Ping Pong was great for those first three episodes. Nope,
Blintz cool.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
So I do. We're also gonna we're going to talk
about Breserve, but I do want to say the summer
anime season is coming out, So for next week, rather
than recommending anime, I think we just go through the
list and talk about these anime and what we plan
on watching, and then we'll do a recommendation episode and
hopefully by then there's been a first episode or a

(32:30):
second episode of everything and we can kind of do
that again.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
Oh yeah, that's right.

Speaker 4 (32:35):
The next season is starting in literally like two dude, sorry, sorry,
next the next yeah, the next season is starting in
about two weeks.

Speaker 1 (32:45):
Very very yeah.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
So I think next week we do going through the list.
After that we we do a week or two of
talking about recommendations and like making each other watch anime,
and then we're gonna watch some seasonal anime and talk
about those. I think is the plan for ran Cafe
coming up in the next month or so or for
the next time or so.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
Sounds good to me.

Speaker 2 (33:05):
Recon, you have been watching Berserk and you've been loving it. Baby,
we're talking about apode ten, eleven and twelve.

Speaker 4 (33:14):
Correct, Yes, ten, eleven and twelve, the continuation. All right,
it is getting intense.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
We are starting to see the light of Griffith. I'm
not gonna lie.

Speaker 4 (33:28):
This show is really starting to make me realize who
the true Black Swordsman really is.

Speaker 2 (33:33):
Yeah, it's crazy, dude, It's it's it's crazy.

Speaker 1 (33:36):
I know it's Kirito.

Speaker 4 (33:37):
Man, it's crazy that Kirio is still the real one.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
I'm joking.

Speaker 1 (33:43):
I'm joking about I'm joking about.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
Guys, so I believe. In episode ten, Griffith and Gut's
relationship is continuing to develop, and Griffith is kind of
giving Guts like the cold shoulder. He's not like treating
in the way he was initially maybe a little bit differently,
And Griffith told Guts to go kill someone and he

(34:09):
ended up there ends up being a pretty dark moment
on that mission to assassinate Julius. Do you remember do
you remember what happens? Rican?

Speaker 4 (34:16):
So in in episode nine, Griffith calls Guts and tells
him that he wants someone assassinated, and it was Julius.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
I think he's the king.

Speaker 4 (34:27):
So he goes, so he infiltrates the castle and then
literally kills Julius and then kills his son, which was unexpected.
I didn't even think that he would be there. And
then the whole castle is just on alert. I'm like,
what the fuck is even going on. He's just esleeping
and playing everyone, and he goes into the sewers and
he's just her and he's trying to survive and make

(34:48):
it out to tell Griffith that the mission is complete.
And then we see Griffith's his his smirk right there,
and we see his smirk after. I think he was
with a princess named Arlotte. I think that's her name.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
I can't remember the princesses. The princess, Yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (35:07):
Think her name was Charlotte.

Speaker 4 (35:08):
He was with her, and then news breaks out to
Charlotte and then Griffith's just smirking in the background, like
I can see his evilness starting to rise up. Now
I don't I don't know what is going to happen
from there, but Griffith is the only one who knows
that Guts did this. So I'm just wondering if he's
gonna tell everyone that that Guts is the killer and

(35:30):
that's where the trail starts.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
No, no way, I mean you're welcome to your theories.
But like Griffith wanted Guts to kill that guy, like
they he completed his mission. The thing that up I'm
just wondering is how Yeah, sorry, I shouldn't have said,
I shouldn't have spoiled you.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
But like no, no, it's fine, it's fine.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
Uh, but it is a fucked up scene where like
he's killed Guts has killed so many people, but killing
that kid, that innocent kid, kind of fucks with him
a little bit.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
Yeah, I guess what correction. Like, So Julius was the king, right,
but there's anytime you have like court politics, there's gonna
be like factions of the different sections of the nobility
that in this case they don't look so kindly upon.

Speaker 1 (36:12):
He wasn't the king of the castle.

Speaker 4 (36:14):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
Yeah, yeah, so it's he was intended for Gets to
kill him, but then his son walked in and uh
you know in that moment, yeah, like the way that
they shot it, you know, he didn't quite know who
it was, but he's knew no witnesses, right, and then witnesses.

Speaker 4 (36:30):
So it was dark the way he died. But yeah,
I just didn't expect that. And then from there on
there were some raids happening with the Band of the Hawks,
you know, challenging more people, and then Guts and Costco
fall off a cliff and he's just rescuing her. And
from there we see a little bit more of character

(36:52):
development between Guts and Cosca, and we also dive into
Costca's backstory and we learn more about her and how
she was, you know, saved by Griffith and why she
actually likes and wants to be with him. So it's
all very touchy and all that. So I'm liking where
this is going so far. It's just so intriguing.

Speaker 1 (37:13):
A good characters, good characters, good fucking characters.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
Yeah, Griffith ends up becoming a noble in these episodes,
like he before he got knighted. He's slowly moving up
and he has said something in chat he Griffith says
something along the lines of I cannot see someone as
an equal if they don't have their own dreams. So
Griffith has been had this dream of like whatever going

(37:40):
up in society. He became knighted, he he became a noble,
and clearly he has some plans that he wants to do.
But yeah, he doesn't see Guts as his equal, and
he's just kind of using him as a sword. He's
been using him all along, but he definitely starts to
treat him a little bit differently, and now you have
Guts is like he's like, like, what am I gonna
do with my life? Like? Am I just going to

(38:00):
be his sword forever? Like he starts to think of
himself like what what Like what do I see him
for my future? Especially after killing that kid? It really
fucks with him and he kind of has this moral
conflict going on.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
Yeah, I think I love about the Golden a Dark
too is it does a really good job of like
humanizing Griffith, Like people don't always know themselves as well
as they think they do. So him saying, you know,
he says, you know, if somebody is not my equal,
like I can't really see them as a friend or
what have you. But also we've seen him up to
this point give Guts a little bit of special treatment

(38:35):
here and there, like he he does view Guts as
an equal, but like there's not really a conversation happening there, right, it's, yeah,
Griffith talking to somebody besides Guts, and then Guts just
kind of listening in on that and drawing his own
conclusions and God getting hurt as a result. So it's
I don't know that and that kind of broke Guts
a bit. So I believe that was in these these episodes, right,
that whole yeah combination.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
Yeah, And by the end of episode twelve, I'm believed
was telling Costca that he's thinking about leaving the Hawks
in general to find his own, like, you know, his
own perpose, his own Yes, he did say that Dreams,
so he was definitely influenced from that conversation that he overheard.

Speaker 1 (39:11):
Yeah, so he's gonna go maybe.

Speaker 4 (39:16):
I don't know if the band of the Hawks is
going to take that as if he's going rogue on.

Speaker 1 (39:21):
His on his clan or whatever. But we'll see what happens.
I'm just waiting for that betrayal a moment. When is
that gonna happen? I have no idea, And.

Speaker 3 (39:30):
That's why I love about the ninety seven version capturing
the heart of berserk because the manga, it starts out
in the same way right where it's like it foreshadows stuff,
and then it drops in or jumps into the Golden
Age arc and you're just you have that in the
back of your mind the whole time. You're like, well,
how do we get from from here to there?

Speaker 2 (39:45):
Like?

Speaker 3 (39:46):
And uh, I love that they they captured that same
type of appeal. I love that that's just in the
back of your head as it should.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
Be, as it should be. Yeah, all right, The Next
Cafe is going to be live on the twenty eighth
at one pm ST aiming for and we're gonna recovering
the seasonal any chart or any list. We're gonna be
going through what's happening in the summer season and coming up,
but start thinking about what we want to recommend each
other as well. Have you guys seen Rising Impact or

(40:14):
heard of it before?

Speaker 3 (40:17):
The Is that a game?

Speaker 2 (40:19):
It's like an older anime. I don't know. When my
friends messaged me, he's like to watch you'll like it.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
From twenty twenty four. Oh is it.

Speaker 1 (40:27):
Twenty twenty four Rising Rising?

Speaker 4 (40:29):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (40:29):
I think unless they did a remake or something.

Speaker 2 (40:31):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (40:32):
Oh, yeah, it is twenty twenty four. I haven't seen
that one.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
You haven't seen seen that one?

Speaker 4 (40:37):
No, because it's an o NA so it's at the bottom.
So I haven't seen that one.

Speaker 2 (40:41):
Hmm. I think this is what he was messaging me about,
and I was like, I'll I recommend it for it.
I guess, so okay, Oh.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
It's on Netflix.

Speaker 4 (40:50):
Oh, I haven't even seen that it's on Netflix. I
might give it an I'm going to message if that's
your recommendation, then yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:56):
We're not watching it for next week. So I just
wanted to know if you got that. You guys have
seen it, right, So I think that'll be my recommendation.
But start thinking about your recommendations. Guys. Remember the checkout
recon on YouTube Anime recon the anime dude. Thank you
for joining me. Boys, happy to be here, and just
like that, I'll see you all next time. Gamers, shimpack
