Under våren och sommaren 2023 kämpar treåriga “Sofia” med återkommande allvarliga hälsoproblem som tvingar henne till upprepade sjukhusvistelser. Hennes mamma, Hannah, delar flitigt med sig av dotterns sjukdomskamp i sociala medier och vinner många sympatier. Situationen blir dock snart akut när Sofia insjuknar i sepsis, en potentiellt dödlig infektion som kräver intensivvård. När läkarna då också upptäcker ovanliga tarmbakterier i hennes blod väcks misstankar om att inte allt står rätt till. Snart börjar man misstänka att Hannah kan ha orsakat Sofias tillstånd med avsikt, ett beteende som tyder på Münchhausen syndrome by proxy.
