In this week’s Pattern Predictions we focus on why the next two weeks evolve the way they do. Recent cold has been fragmented - what we’ve been calling disjointed cold - thanks to a warming stratosphere and a weakened polar vortex. That continues into the holiday: a milder midweek bump delivers rain Tuesday night into Wednesday, followed by a cool shot for Thanksgiving and Friday. By the end of the holiday weekend and into early next week, warmer air fights back. The bigger story, though, is upstream: the polar vortex begins to recharge near Hudson Bay and the Pole, rebuilding a deeper reservoir of cold on our side of the Northern Hemisphere as we head into early December. It doesn’t flip all at once, but by late next week into the Dec 6-10 window, signals strengthen for colder-than-normal to press into the Northeast - most robust across Canada first, then filtering south.
