Marginal temperatures and light snowfall rates mean chemically treated interstates should handle today’s snow fairly well. The shift comes late day: as the sun sets and rates briefly increase (~3-9 PM), slick spots expand, especially away from the immediate coast and on untreated surfaces.
Where/when:
Late AM to midday: Snow develops for many; wet snow mixes with rain across SE MA/South Coast/Cape.
Mid to late afternoon into early evening (~3-9 PM): A pulse of steadier precip nudges more areas to snow - even south of Boston for a time - with increasing slick spots.
8 PM to Midnight: Most areas taper to light snow/snow showers. After that, we watch for a narrow “Norlun”/inverted trough to focus heavier snow along the Maine coast, likely midcoast but we’re monitoring from Portsmouth through Casco Bay for any south/west shift.
Snow amounts (most likely):
Southern New England: Coating-2" for most; 2-3" in interior higher terrain (NE MA/W MA hills).
VT/NH/ME: Elevation makes a difference with this event - so will being close to the Norlun Trough - particularly likely along the Maine coast and extending inland along the disturbance, where 6-8"+ is expected.
Wind: Not a factor today. Wednesday AM turns blustery NW (30–40 mph gusts), enough to blow a dusting back onto cleared surfaces.
