In this episode, we’ll explore the division of Germany between 1947 and 1949, a period that marked the emergence of West and East Germany. The unification of the Western zones brought some stability, but it also amplified the ideological divide, especially within the city of Berlin. In May 1949, West Germany approved its constitution, establishing Konrad Adenauer as the first Chancellor. While Britain, France, and the USA maintained international authority, internal governance shifted to the newly formed German government. In response, Stalin solidified Soviet control in the East by merging communist and social democratic parties into the Socialist Unity Party (SED), cementing communist dominance in the region. Join us as we explore the growing divide between East and West Germany and the early formation of the Cold War divide.
