Speaker 1 (00:09):
Apple Apple Apple, My hands on impressions of the new iPhone, fourteen,
fourteen Pro, Apple Watches and new AirPods, plus your tech
questions answered. What's going on? I'm rich Demiro and this
is rich on Tech, the podcast where I talk about
the tech stuff I think you should know about. It's
also the place where I answer the questions you send me.
(00:32):
I'm a tech reporter at KTLA Channel five in Los Angeles.
Welcome to the show, broadcasting live on my Instagram at
rich on Tech. Welcome to everyone that is listening live.
Uh someone said, didn't know his side gig was a DJ. Yeah,
if you're listening to the podcast, you don't realize that.
(00:55):
I kind of warmed myself up by do a little
dance at the beginning of the show before I introduce myself,
so you know, it just gets the energy up, just
gets things going. Man, what a whirlwind. I mean, I
went straight from COVID pandemic to literally there are so
many things that are coming up on the calendar, so
much travel, so many invitations. It's like it just feels
(01:18):
like it used to be, and I kind of maybe
forgot how much I traveled or how many things I
got invited to because at this point, there's so many
invites to different places and I'm talking around the world
that there's just no way I can do them all.
So it's great, don't get me wrong. But I was
just in New Jersey. If you've been following my saga
(01:42):
of my new fitted suit, my Indo Chino suit, I
got to wear it for the first time at the
wedding I went to. It was awesome, very very tight fit.
I will tell you that I've never had such a
fitted suit. People seem to like it, but it is
definitely I would say, you know, it's one of those
things where I felt like I was like, can I
(02:03):
sit down in this suit or not? But it's definitely
a different feeling and you do feel good in it
because it is so fitted. So that was kind of cool.
New Jersey was great. Stayed in this hotel called the
Canopy by Hilton in Jersey City, which I've never stayed
in a Canopy, but I absolutely loved it because it's
just like it wasn't an expensive hotel, but it was
(02:25):
a very modern hotel, so I had like modern amenities,
Like the room was just very nice and clean and neat.
They had like water refill stations at the every floor,
like near the elevator. They had like a cool like
you know, outdoor area which was kind of cool with
like a craft cocktail bar, so that was nice. It
was just really nice. The people at the front desk
were really friendly, so it was just really really nice. Then,
(02:48):
of course I got up to the Apple event right after.
I was home for a day. Then I went up
to Coopertino. And I'm not kidding Apple, you know, love
them or hate them, They they really attention to detail.
And I'm talking you know, every journalist that goes up
there is warmly greeted personally. They are you know, someone
(03:08):
has you have a point to point contact. It is
very well done. And so I got up to Coopertino.
We did the first Apple event in three years in
the Steve Jobs Theater, which was really cool. They had
WWDC in there just a little bit, but this was
the first time we were like actually in the theater.
So the Apple event was was phenomenal, except for the
fact that Apple has decided it seems that it's easier
(03:32):
to do pre taped presentations, so CEO Tim Cook came
out on stage for about two minutes, did a brief intro, Hey, welcome,
thanks for being here, we're all sitting there, and then
they roll tape. So what you saw at home on
the live stream was basically what I was sitting in
a theater watching. The big difference is that after the event,
(03:54):
I got to spend the next forty eight hours hands
on with all the products, so that was very exciting.
I got demos of every single new feature. I am
very well versed in all things new with iPhone. So
if you have some questions, definitely put them in the
chat here. But I'm gonna go through pretty much every
product that they announced. So the way this show is
(04:14):
gonna work, it's gonna be Apple centric. I'm gonna do
kind of the iPhone fourteen, then i'm gonna do the pro,
then i'm gonna do like the watch, the AirPods, whatever
else they announced, and in between I will do some questions.
So first let's start with the iPhone fourteen and fourteen plus.
So these are pretty much, you know, your standard basic
(04:35):
iPhones this year around, they have the fourteen and the
fourteen plus. You've got a six point one inch screen
and then a six point seven inch screen. So remember
Back in the day they had the Mini, the Regular,
and the Plus. Now it's just the Regular and the Plus.
I think they've decided that the Mini just wasn't doing
it for people. So not a whole ton of changes
(04:56):
for the iPhone fourteen and fourteen plus unless you want
that big phone, right, if you want that big screen size,
go for the fourteen Plus. This is kind of just
gonna give you a lot of phone for the money.
So they do have a new camera on there, new
twelve megapixel main camera. It's got a larger sensor, so
it's gonna capture some more light. Pictures are gonna look
better theoretically, I'm gonna have to test that out. But
(05:19):
they've got a new front facing camera that is that
has auto focus for the first time, so that means
your selfies are going to be in focus, your group
photos are going to be more in focus because the
camera actually focuses instead of just being a fixed focus.
Let's see what else ultra wide camera is. Let's see
(05:40):
that has you know, some improvements to low light photos
with the ultra wide. So that's always good because the
ultra Wide on the iPhone, especially the basic model, has
you know, left a little bit to be desired. Another
cool new mode is Action Mode. So this is kind
of like a GoPro built into the iPhone. And I
will say I was the only reporter up at the
(06:01):
Coopertino event to take one of the iPhones and run
around the event space with it in action mode and
then put that video on social media. And I thought
I was gonna get kicked out for doing that, but
and yes, all of the Apple people. It went around
the Apple PR folks, and they definitely knew that I
did that, and you probably weren't supposed to do, but they,
(06:23):
I think since the video looked pretty good, they were like,
all right, we'll let it pass. So they definitely mentioned
and I was like, oh you did see that, Like,
oh we saw it, we all saw it. I'm like,
oh okay. So they kind of frown upon, you know,
taking the phone from the area and running with it.
But you know, I got to push the envelope and
I was basically the only reporter to do that. If
you look up online, if you search action mode iPhone fourteen,
(06:46):
you'll see like blogs posted about my video. So kind
of cool, you know, trying to make a name for
myself in this tech industry a couple of So anyway,
Action Mode is kind of like this super stabilized video
that is kind of like a GoPro but on the
iPhone it's not perfect, but it will give you some
more creative options there. Now a couple things to know
(07:07):
about the iPhone fourteen, the standard one. It's using last
year's processor, or at least a version of last year's processor,
so not a big increase there, but you know last
year's processor A fifteen Bionic is still really good and
it's super fast and for everything you need on this phone,
it's going to be just fine. A couple of new
things they added to all of the phones this year
(07:28):
are crash detection and Emergency SOS through satellite. So crash
detection I was not able to get a demo off
because they were not going to put me in a
car and crash it. But basically it's using these new
sensors in the iPhone, these accelerometers like a combination of
things microphone accelerometer, gyroscope, and it is using an algorithm
(07:49):
to detect G force and all different types of crashes
in a passenger car. So they made that very clear.
I was trying to understand like what the difference is
between like a semi truck and a passenger car, but
it will work in things like an suv, sedan, you know,
any type of car that a regular person would drive,
but not necessarily like a commercial car. I'm not sure why,
(08:12):
but that they made that distinction clear. So and when
crash detection is, you know, happens just like fall detection.
You'll get an alert on your phone. It'll say, hey,
we think you're in a crash. Do you want us
to call nine one one. If you don't respond within
ten seconds, then it will immediately dial emergency and it
will alert your contacts and it will send your location
(08:32):
to the Emergency Services Emergency SOS via satellite. I did
get a demo of and it was pretty incredible. So somehow,
I don't know how they did this, but they made
the iPhone, using the standard antennas inside the iPhone, able
to communicate with satellites eight hundred miles above the Earth.
(08:52):
I don't understand how they made that possible. It took
a lot of engineering. They actually set up new relay
centers where they have Apple employees that will be waiting
for these messages to come through. For emergencies and relay
them to nine one one, or they'll connect you right
to nine one one. Again, this is all through messages.
It's not a phone call, and it happens when you
(09:14):
dial nine one one if there's no cell phone signal,
it'll say, all right, let's connect you Vius satellite and
on your phone, it will show you how to point
the phone to the sky to get a clear view
of a satellite that is traveling like thousands of miles
an hour. So in that time of your sending and
receiving a message, you actually have to move the phone
a little bit because the satellites moved so fast. But
(09:34):
it is incredible. That's coming out in November. It will
be a paid feature, but you are going to get
two years of that for free. And it's one of
these things where Apple really kind of just kept hitting
home the fact that like if you have an iPhone,
if you have an Apple Watch, you are going to
be safe from you know, not only can you never
be stranded, but you are safe in a crash if
(09:56):
you fall. You know, there's fall detection, there's crash detection,
there's a mergent and see SOS, I mean they've really
done a lot with health and safety here, all right.
iPhone fourteen and fourteen Plus available in midnight Blue, Starlight.
Purple is the new color, and red starts at one
hundred and twenty eight gigs up to five hundred and
twelve gigs. Purple is a new color. And I gotta
say the purple is really good looking. It's a very
(10:19):
light purple. And I would say it's not like a
very you know, anyone can carry the purple color like
it's it's a preference, you know what I mean. Like
it's not like you say, oh, I can't carry that
because you know it's just too purply or it's not
purplely enough. It's like a very interesting purple color. Friday
September sixteenth is when the iPhone fourteen is available the Plus.
(10:42):
If you want the Plus, you have to actually wait
until October seventh. Pricing for these eight hundred dollars or
nine hundred dollars, and that is the iPhone fourteen. All right,
let's get to the first question of the podcast. Roy says,
(11:04):
you may have mentioned this already, but what companies do
you recommend to trade in your old iPhone for money
other than Apple? Thank you? Very much. So here's the deal, roy,
I recommend you trade in your phone wherever you get
the most money. Now, I always say every year, it
goes kind of in a matrix. Right, you're going to
get the most and it's gonna be the easiest if
(11:25):
you sell it to a friend, right, so, friend, family member.
You know, let's go online see how much your phone
is worth, and then you know, take that price and
kind of use that as your guide to sell it
to a friend or family member. That's gonna be the
simplest because you can do a cash transaction. You're giving
it someone. You know, you don't have to pay shipping,
you don't have to ship your phone. You don't have
to think about all that stuff. Very very easy. After that,
(11:49):
you know, there are different levels like eBay. Clearly you're
gonna get the most, but you're gonna have to deal
with the most kind of hassle. There's sites like Swapa,
which I believe someone just mentioned on the live chat.
Swapa is a good one as well. A lot of
people like selling their phone there. Again, you have to
be a little bit more techy to do something like that. Now,
if you do something like Gazelle, you're really not going
(12:12):
to get much for your phone if you do it
like that. But trade in what's happening right now is
the carriers are giving you more money than your phone
is worth. So if you're talking about you know, an
iPhone ten R or an iPhone eleven or twelve or thirteen,
you know they're giving up to one thousand dollars right now.
So the trick is with those trade in deals, they
(12:32):
don't give you the thousand dollars all at once. They
give it to you over anywhere between I think it's
twenty four to thirty six months. So basically you are
on a fixed plan where they give you a little
bit of cash every month towards your bill so that
you stick with that carrier. And that's why they're giving
you that extra money. So it's not real money, it's
(12:52):
not like cold, hard cash, but you are getting almost
like a free phone because of how much they're giving
you for that trade in. So again I would just
talk to your carrier, I talk to Apple, and I
would talk to you know, look at the websites. You
know there's some there's a gosh, there's a website that
I can't I can't remember. But there's like a here
(13:13):
it is Flipsy flips Y, and so if you put
your phone into Flipsy, it will search all of the
different phone websites that you can sell your phone on.
And you know, the reality with selling your phone is
it's a little bit scary because you know you are
taking a leap of faith when you ship that out,
making sure that the person pays you and all that stuff.
(13:33):
But I think these systems have gotten pretty good where
you're not taking too much of a risk anymore. So. Oh,
the other thing that I should mention about these phones
is they've done away with the SIM card and so
now there's what's called an e SIM. This has been
around for a while, it's just never really been forced
upon people in America, and now it's going to be.
So if you get a new iPhone fourteen, there's no
(13:56):
more transferring that little tiny SIM card to your new phone.
You actually have to set up what's called an eSIM
and it's electronic. It happens instantly. You don't even need
a Wi Fi signal to do it. But it just
basically transfers your number to an electronic a little electronic
chip on the phone that's built in and you can
have up to I think they said six or eight
(14:18):
of them only too active at a time, but you
can have you know, a bunch of these different sims.
So let's say you travel to Italy all the time,
like would be my dream, you can just keep your
Italian eSIM in the background and every time you get
to Italy just activate that eSIM. So yeah, it's kind
of cool. Eric is asking what's the max capacity on
the fourteen plus. It is five hundred and twelve gigabytes
(14:39):
on the fourteen plus. All right, now let's talk about
the iPhone fourteen Pro and the fourteen Promax. These are
the phones that the fourteen is fine, but it's just
you know, it's your everyday iPhone. The fourteen Pro and
the Promax is really where you're gonna get going to
get the best features from Apple, and this is where
they came out with newer feature. Well, so again, same
(15:01):
sizees six point one inch, six point seven inch. The
first thing you're gonna notice is this always on display,
which is really really quite phenomenal. So your phone screen
pretty much always stays on. Now if you leave the room,
if you are away from your phone for a while,
it will kind of go to sleep secretly, but when
you come back to it, the always on display will
(15:21):
come on. So it's using different cues to not drain
the battery by having the always on display on when
you're not using it. But if your phone is just
on your desk at work all day, now it will
show the time, it will show the date, it will
show your notifications, it will show you know, the little
Now you can have complications on there, like the weather,
your calendar updates, whatever. It's really really cool now always on.
(15:44):
I know Android phones have had it for years, but
I will say that I think Apple is doing this
really nicely. I think the two best always on displays
that I know of are the Pixel and now I
would say the iPhone fourteen Pro. So it just looks
really good and it's in color. Yes you can turn
it off. Tony's asking if you can turn it off. Yes, yes, yes,
(16:05):
you can turn it off. People are asking. I did check,
Yes you can turn it off. I don't know why
you'd want to turn it off. Apple's done such a
good job with this, and already I'm finding myself just
kind of loving the always on display aspect of this phone.
Does it cause burnin. No, it doesn't. I asked Apple
that question. They sort of laughed at me. They're like, no,
(16:25):
there's no burnin risk at all. I'm like, okay, sorry
for asking. So you do have the always on display. Now,
when you open up the phone, the first thing you
notice is instead of that notch at the top, there's
now kind of a pill shaped area. Apple is calling
this dynamic Island. I know it sounds so silly, sounds
like a Netflix reality show, But what Dynamic Island is
(16:47):
It is kind of smart. It's a fusion of both
the hardware that has to be there, you know, the
little cameras and sensors that they can't seem to move,
and also a mix of software. So when you do
face ID, it shows up in the dynamic island. When
you're playing music, it shows up in the dynamic island,
you get a timer going, it shows up in dynamic Island.
You can tap into the Dynamic Island to change the
song or check your timer. Apps can use the dynamic
(17:09):
Island to interact in new ways. So there's gonna be
a whole bunch of stuff that is happening in this
Dynamic Island, and it's different it's unique. It's kind of
a good little play on the area of the phone
that has gotten a lot of criticism from Apple for
not getting rid of But now it seems to work.
We'll see how long they stick with it. So dynamic
(17:31):
island is there. Next, you have a brand new forty
eight megapixel main camera. So the forty eight megapixel main
camera still takes pictures in twelve megapixels, so each I'm
not a camera expert, but each pixel I guess is
four pixels together, So that means more light gets into
each pixel, which means if you're taking you know, the
(17:52):
standard camera of shots, it's gonna they're gonna be faster
to take, especially in low light, they're gonna be brighter.
You can take four eight megapixel shots if you want
to switch to pro raw. So I'm not gonna do that,
but I know some people may want to if you're
like a really big time photographer. The thing is you're
not going to let in as much light when you're
(18:13):
using all those forty eight megapixels for the pixels, So
that will definitely take a hit on that aspect of it.
But there's also different zooms now, So now in addition,
to the wide angle the one X the three X,
you now have a two x telephoto zoom. And the
way they're doing the two X is they're actually sort
of cropping in on the one X. So that's kind
(18:37):
of interesting, all right, So what else? The Action Mode,
this is what I was talking about earlier. It's the
same thing on the iPhone. On the Pro, it's just
a little bit better because you have that better main camera.
But the Action Pro does work on. Action mode does
work on all the different cameras as far as I know.
Cinematic mode. You can now go up into four K
(18:59):
with Cinema Mode at thirty frames and twenty four frames.
The iPhone fourteen, Pro and Promax also have the crash detection,
the Emergency SOS and these phones are available in again
a purple color. It's called Deep purple, and silver gold
and space black. So my choice here this year is
going to be silver for me. The deep purple is
(19:21):
really beautiful. So the deep purple is really really nice,
and I would recommend it again. I think it is
a color that spans all genders all, you know, Like
I don't think that it's a color that you would say, oh,
that's for you know, one type of person or another.
I think that the purple that they came up with
(19:43):
is really really nice. So it's a beautiful purple color,
and it's it's a different purple than the iPhone fourteen.
The iPhone fourteen is like a bright purple. This purple
is almost like if you didn't know, it's almost like
a bluish black color. So it's really really nice. But
I think silver for me is the color I would
go with this year. This is going to come in
(20:05):
one twenty eight, two fifty six, five twelve, and the
one terabyte capacities, so they start at nine to ninety nine.
I would not get the one twenty eight. I would
bump up to two fifty six if you can. And
it's going to be nine ninety nine for the fourteen
Pro or on eleven hundred for the fourteen Pro Max. Again,
i'd probably go for the two fifty six, although if
(20:28):
you're paying for iCloud storage, you probably don't need all
that extra onboard storage. I pay for the two terabyte storage,
and so you really don't need all that storage on
your phone because my photos are going into iCloud and
or Google Photos, so you can just delete the photos
off your phone, but I kind of like having a
year's worth of photos on my phone. So that's the
(20:51):
iPhone fourteen Pro and the Promax. No real substantial changes
to the the like what the phones look like, although
I do feel like they are a bit lighter, and
I don't think the cases will fit them because I
think that the back like camera array is just slightly
slightly different. So if you're thinking you're going to put
your old case on it, I'm not really sure. And
(21:13):
Michael is asking a terabyte how much? I don't have
the price on a terabyte, but I guess I can
check because you can pre order soon or maybe today's
the pre orders, actually I think it. Yeah, it is
pre order today. iPhone fourteen Pro. Let's just see how
much it is. So if you go all the way
up to that one terabyte, let's see, did you want
(21:36):
the Pro or the Pro Max. Let's see if we
just do Pro Max, the one terabyte is going to
be sixteen hundred bucks. So that's a lot. I don't
know if you need a terabyte, but you know, if
you're a videographer. Let's put it this way. I've been
using the iPhone thirteen for a year, and I'm up
(21:56):
to just about four hundred gigabytes of storage, and so
I haven't reached that five hundred and twelve and I've
literally taken a whole year's worth of videos on those
device on that device. So if I'm not up to
five hundred and twelve, I think five to twelve will
be good. I think two fifty six will be good
for the average person that's not shooting videos for TV.
(22:20):
Any changes with the charging cables, no, no changes with
the charging cables at all. So that's that. All right,
Let's get into the next question of the show here.
All right, Oscar says, my son is turning ten next month.
We want to buy him an iPad. Which would you
recommend for gaming such as Roadblocks? Not really wanting to
buy him the latest version, nor the oldest one, but
(22:42):
one that would be just right. Thanks for your help, Oscar.
All right, Oscar number one, you know, I hate roadblocks.
I am not a fan of roadblocks, so my preference
would be for your kid to not play roadblocks. But
I understand my kids love roadblocks too, and as a parent,
I absolutely despise it. And the reason I despise it
is because I don't see anything redeeming about Roadblocks. I
(23:03):
don't find the games are very good. I find that
they are very all over the place. There's no real
point to them. They are some of them are are
kind of fearful, you know. I just don't. I don't
see the point. I really don't, and I know that
that's just my opinion, but that's the way I feel
as a parent. Like my kids when they played Minecraft,
(23:24):
I really liked it, even though Minecraft has some you know,
aspects of it that I don't think are very good,
but it seemed good for them. Res Roadblocks, I don't
see anything good about it. I see it's almost My
kids are like zombies when they play it. So again,
I would you know, I don't think you're gonna get
your kids to stop playing Roadblocks, but if you can,
that would be my first choice. So I think that
(23:45):
you should get your child the iPad. It's just the
standard iPad, and it is just you know, it's basically
three hundred and twenty nine dollars. Now, what I would
say is look at the Apple. Since your kid is
ten years old, he's in school, I would go to
the education store and right now, Apple has a pretty
(24:05):
good deal for K through twelve. So let's see here
and if we go to the iPad there the iPad okay,
so right now you get one hundred dollars gift card
if you buy an iPad. So that's pretty good. So
you buy the iPad. It is uh, let's see how
(24:26):
much it is with the education pricing. I don't know
if they change the education pricing. Oh yeah, it is
three hundred and nine dollars, so you save twenty bucks
on the iPad and you also get one hundred dollars
gift card. So I think that's a win win. Definitely
the time to get it, and it's only right now,
like Apple doesn't do this for very long, so I
would jump on that. And you can also look and
(24:47):
see sometimes the retailers that are selling the iPad will
match the price, like they'll give you a cheaper price
for the iPad out the door, but you won't get
that gift card. But that's what I recommend is just
getting the standard iPad. Don't go with the Kindle Fire,
don't go with the Mini, don't go with the you know,
the air, Just get the standard iPad. If your kid
is just playing games, on it and doing basic stuff.
(25:08):
That's what my kids have. They like it. It works
for them. It's just fine, and I think that it's
it's still got a lot of life left in it.
So the other thing to do before you check anything
when it comes to buying stuff is go to the
website Buyer's Guide dot MacRumors dot com, and that will
tell you where we are in the life cycle of
these products. So when it comes to the iPad, the
(25:30):
standard iPad, right, let's see where is it if we
look at the oh what happened there? Okay, oh, yeah,
here we go. If we look at the standard iPad
right now, they're saying caution because the standard iPad has
been out for three hundred and sixty days and the
average is five hundred and eighty between new models. So
(25:50):
we're kind of like halfway through the cycle with that.
But I think you're just fine forgetting it because the
iPad they may have an event next month in October,
but I think the standard iPad is still pretty good.
It's about a year old at this point. So okay, oh,
a lot of apple Man, Apple, Apple Apple, All right,
what should we talk about next? AirPods pro or the
Apple Watch. Let's talk about the Apple Watch, since I
(26:12):
know a lot of people love their Apple Watches. All right,
so you've got two three new Apple Watches. Actually, I'm
just gonna go through the Series eight and the se
right now, and then we'll get to the Ultra in
a second. But the new thing on the Apple Watch
Series eight is basically temperature sensing. So they've added a
thermometer to the watch, which it does not like I
(26:35):
was looking for a reading of, like my exact temperature
at that moment in time. That's not how it works.
It looks for relative changes of temperature in your body.
So while you're sleeping, it samples your temperature every five seconds.
Seems like at a little bit much Apple little a
little eager there every five seconds, and it can detect
(26:55):
changes as small as one tenth of a degree celsius.
So that's pretty interesting, or maybe it's a tenth, yeah,
tenth of a degree celsia celsius. In the health app,
you can see your nightly shifts in your baseline temperature,
which can be caused by exercise, jet lag, or illness. Look,
here's the deal, and Tony's saying it right now. Who
(27:17):
sleeps with the Watch. I agree. I've had the Apple
Watch since day one. I've never slept with it because
it just is not comfortable to me to sleep with.
And so the battery has gotten to a place where
now with the fast charging, you can charge it before bed.
It'll give you us it'll say like, hey, if you
want to sleep with this thing, you gotta charge it
now for another twenty minutes and then you'll be okay
to get through your bedtime. But I just I'd never
(27:40):
I take it off, and I just don't find that
the sleep information given by the Apple Watch is very good.
Now today my Aura ring is arriving, so I'm gonna
start wearing that to bed, and that's much easier to
wear because it's a ring. And so apparently the sleep
tracking on that is pretty good. But on the flip
side of the Aura, from what I've heard, is that
the immediate tracking is not very good. Like the fitness
(28:04):
tracking in the in the second by second like when
you're on the treadmill, is really good with the Apple Watch,
but the Apple Watch doesn't seem to be good at
like giving you kind of like your whole body indicator.
So anyway, so temperature sensing is there. So because of
the temperature sensing, users can get new ovulation estimates. That's
obviously for female users, and that you know, that has
(28:27):
a whole bunch of implications in itself. Crash detection is
now built into the Apple Watch as well, so there
used to be fall detection, but now they have crash detection.
And since seven is saying the temperature feature may be
good for COVID, fever or metopause temperature changes, and yes,
I agree, but I'm not sure that that's exactly built
(28:48):
in like right now, I think Apple is just taking
the readings. I'm not sure how much they're doing with
the readings. I think that maybe the third party apps
will come in, and I do think that you know,
if your temperature changes, it could indicate something like COVID
or an illness. But I think it's gonna be third
party apps that take advantage with a big big asterisk
on them saying don't rely on this as your end all,
(29:10):
like see a doctor if you really think that these
changes are doing something to your body. So the crash
detection now for the cars is in the Apple Watch
as well, so it has a new gyroscope, a new accelerometer,
and so that's helping enable those features. There's also a
new low power mode. Now. The old low power mode
(29:30):
that was on the Apple Watch basically disabled everything, so
you only had a little tiny time indicator on the
watch when you put low power mode on, or power
reserve whatever it's called. So this is a low power
mode which your watch still works, it just doesn't do
as many things as it did before. But now your
battery can reach up to thirty six hours, so that's
(29:52):
kind of neat. Now the Apple Watch SE. The only
news there is that it's faster. So it's got the
Apple Watch a processor, which means the Apple Watch SE
is a lot faster, twenty percent faster than the previous generation.
That also has crash detection as well, and the price
is cheaper on that. I think I said it was
(30:13):
fifty dollars less than the old model, but I believe
it's just twenty dollars less. So the Apple Watch SE
starts at two hundred and fifty dollars. The Apple Watch
Series eight starts at three ninety nine, same price as
last year. My recommendation is, you know, there's this whole
idea of do you get cellular or not. So with
the Apple Watch SE, if you're giving that to a
(30:33):
child as a way to keep in touch with them,
definitely get the cellular And what that means is that
they're going to be able to call you, text you,
and you're gonna be able to see their location no
matter what, even if they don't have an iPhone nearby.
If you just get the Apple Watch without cellular, you're
not gonna be able to do anything with that watch,
(30:54):
like communication wise, if there's no iPhone nearby or they
leave a Wi Fi area. So I would definitely, if
you want the most use out of the Apple Watch
SE when it comes to kids, go with the cellular version.
And you're gonna have to pay ten dollars a month
for that or five to ten dollars a month depending
on your carrier for that service, but I think it's
worth it. That's what my kid has Apple Watch Series eight.
(31:17):
When it comes to cellular on the regular Apple Watches,
I only recommend cellular if you run with just your watch.
So if you find yourself in a position where you
are leaving the house with just your watch, you probably
want cellular. But if you never leave the house without
your phone, you don't need cellular on your Apple Watch
because your Apple Watch is always going to be communicating
(31:38):
with your phone and going through your phone for that
cellular connection. So that's the whole distinction between the whole
cellular situation. So for kids, I would go cellular. For
adults only go cellular if you're a runner or if
you leave the house a lot without your phone and
you want to be always connected. So that's the Apple
Watch eight and the Apple Watch sc If you have
(32:01):
an Apple Watch seven, don't necessarily think you need to
upgrade to the eight, but the se definitely a great
new addition for kids like that. That watch has been
a while since it's been updated. So oh and Johnny
at Apple says, you've got to try playing Roadblocks and
you'll see what's so great about it. I don't know.
I see my kids playing. I watched them play, and
(32:21):
I just you know, my kid waited in this. You know,
a lot of Roadblocks is like waiting in these games.
Like I feel like they play a lot of mind
games with the kids, and I just I don't appreciate
that either. Like my kid was crying one time because
he was waiting so long to like play this like
American Idol style game, and I was like, what are
you waiting for? He's like, oh, I gotta I'm up
next or whatever. Anyway, so all right, all right, let's
(32:46):
talk or let's take another question. Where are we in
the questions here? Let's see here? Uh, Pam says, good morning.
Did you say you use your ATM card in Europe?
We're getting ready to travel and not sure how that works. Also,
what was the cell phone idea you spoke of? As always,
thanks for your trusted halo and info. Thank you, Pam. Yes, Pam,
(33:07):
I recommend using your ATM card in in Europe because
you're going to get the best exchange rate. Obviously if
you're if you have a credit card, you can use
that as well, just don't make sure it doesn't have
a foreign conversion fee. So a lot of these credit cards,
especially ones that have sometimes the ones that have no
(33:28):
yearly fee attached to them, they might charge a three
percent foreign transaction fee. You do not want to pay
a foreign transaction fee, that's for sure. So I what
I do in Europe is I was using my tap
to pay credit card most of the time, but I
did take out cash from the ATM and so what
I do is I have a little bit of American
(33:49):
cash on me when I go to the country. Then
when I get to that country, I bline it to
the first ATM and I get some cash in their currency.
So I have it just in case, you know, if
you need it for the train or something that doesn't
I would say, when I was in Rome, ninety nine
point nine percent of places took tap to pay or
a credit card. But it used to be when I
was traveling in foreign countries, like some places just took cash, right,
(34:13):
But now everything pretty much takes a card. But anyway,
I still like to have some cash for little things
like you're buying a bottle of water or something. You can,
you know, toss a buck or two out. So in
the ATMs, there's a little bit of a trick that
they use, and the trick is that it says it
tries in all of these things. When you try to
make a transaction, sometimes it says, you know, do you
want to convert into your currency? And it sounds like
(34:34):
you're doing the right things. You're like, oh, of course
I want to pay in my currency. You don't want
to do that. You always want to decline the conversion
and you want to do a local transaction in their currency.
So the ATM when you're taking money out will try
to trick you and will say, oh, accept conversion. If
you accept that conversion, you're going to pay a lot
of extra fees and you're gonna pay their conversion rate,
(34:55):
Whereas if you just take out money in their rate,
your bank is going to do the exchange rate on
the other side, and your bank is not going to
fool around. They're going to give you the best rate possible.
One of the few times when a bank will not
fool around with you. Let's see. And what was the
cell phone idea you spoke of? So this is a
great thing. We were talking about eSIMs. And this is
(35:17):
where I first used an eSIM was in Europe when
I went to Rome. I used the Erlo app ai
r A l O and that app. You go in
there and you just buy a simcard for whatever country
you're in and it's a great deal and you activate
it right from your phone. Boom, your phone is activated.
They're data only, so you can only you know, you
(35:37):
can't make and receive calls with them, but you can
send text you know, I message Telegram, whatever not, SMS.
But you can also just use all the data too,
so really easy, really simple, and that's what I recommend
Ai r Alo for that. All right, now let's talk
about Apple Watch Ultra. This is Apple sort of top
(36:01):
of the line Apple Watch, the Ultra. I can't believe
for something that is so intense, it is seriously the
lightest watch. Like this thing looks big and bulky on
your wrist, it actually looked pretty. I don't have the
biggest risks in the world, and it actually looked really
good on my wrist. Like it's something I would consider
getting because of a couple things. First off, it's the Ultra.
(36:23):
It's like, you know, it's the best. And then it
it's you know, it's got some extra features built in,
bigger battery, some more durability. It also has a flat screen,
so if you like that flat screen, it is flat.
It's not rounded on the edges, which is kind of nice.
But it looks like it would be very heavy, but
(36:44):
it's not. It's super lightweight. And so I don't know
how Apple did it, but they did. Now, this Apple
Watch Ultra is for the rugged outdoors person or the
athlete and or the you know, any extreme sports kind
of person divers, this kind of stuff. Three built in microphones,
so when you're talking on this thing, you should hear
(37:06):
the quality and voice. You should see a perceptive change
in the quality and voice calls. There's three mics that
are picking up your voice. There's also this new action button,
So this is an additional button on this device, and
it's in high contrast international orange, and it's on the
left side of the device, and it just a big
orange button that you can program to do different things.
(37:27):
So you can press it to bring up an app,
you can press it when you're inside an app for
an alternative functionality. And app developers, you know, they're just
learning about this stuff too, so they're going to start
building their apps with all of these functions in mind.
But the other thing that's different about this is it's
got a bigger speaker on it, So the speaker is
(37:50):
really big. The digital crown, that little turn button is
much bigger and like more substantial, so it's easier to
manipulate with like a glove on your hand. And this
I'm telling you this is just like I can't explain
this watch. But it's not for like the everyday person
like me. It's really for someone who I've got people
(38:11):
in mind that climb rocks for you know, on the weekends,
or really extreme hiking in extreme sports, triathlons, triathletes, those
kind of people, marathon runners, people that really need the
maximum battery, maximum use of an Apple Watch without ruining
it by you know, all these things. Just the bands
(38:34):
on this watch are one hundred dollars, so it comes
with one, thankfully, but an extra band from Apple is
a hundred bucks. That's that's pretty expensive. It also has
more GPS built in, so this has what's called L
one and L five GPS, and so what that means
is that you are going to get even more accurate
GPS locks and quicker because it has better GPS on it.
(38:59):
The it's got this new waypoints functionality, and I believe
this is coming to other Apple watches too. But the
Compass app we did this cool little walk around the
Apple campus where we figured out basically, you can set
waypoints on your watch and you can navigate back to those,
but you can also do something called backtrack. And this
is kind of interesting, and I believe this is coming
to the Apple Watch as well, not just the Ultra,
(39:20):
but the backtracks feature will let you kind of track
your entire walk or run or hike or whatever, so
that if you get lost, you can just follow your
tracks back to where you started. And the interesting thing
about this is that you can start this manually, but
it also triggers automatically, so if you leave cellular or
(39:43):
Wi Fi range, your watch goes hmm, all right, Rich
is leaving like any sort of civilized area, so let's
start recording his tracks just in case he needs to
make his way back to where he started. And so
it uses what's called backtracks, and it uses GPS to
it starts recording your GPS data. I don't know if
it's every couple of seconds or every minute, whatever it is,
(40:04):
but it basically it's almost like a breadcrumb to where you,
you know, can lead yourself back to where you started from.
So that's a really nice way of not getting lost,
which is really nice. Let's see this Apple Watch Ultra
also has crash detection, and let's see what else does
it have that's interesting. It's just a really kind of
(40:27):
neat looking watch. Now, this is the first generation of
an Apple product, so I would say, you know, little
caution here because the first generation of Apple products they're good,
but you know, the second generation comes along and they've
smoothed out all the things that were kind of not
you know, maybe not the best on the first generation.
Don't forget Apple is planning things out, you know, a
couple of years in advance. So this watch is is great,
(40:52):
but it is the first generation and next generation will
probably have a couple of things that are a little
bit better. And yes, someone's asking on the chat. What
is the price of the Apple Watch ultra It is
eight hundred dollars and there is no camera on the
watch that someone's asking in the chat, no camera on it.
Eight hundred dollars. Now that includes GP, that includes cellular.
(41:14):
There is no version of this watch without a cellular connection.
Now I say cellular connection, I mean a cellular antenna.
It's not activated. You know, you have to pay the
ten dollars a month if you want to make and
receive calls and texts and all that stuff. One thing
you should know, at least in the US, if you
have an Apple Watch with cellular and you have an
emergency and you do not have that cellular activated on
(41:37):
your watch, by law, that Watch will still connect to
nine one one for free. So this applies to any
cellular device in America. Cellular device in America, you dial
nine one one on it, even if there's no cell
phone plan on that device, it will still connect you
to a nine one one operator. So let's just say,
(41:58):
worst case scenario, you just want to be safe, you
buy the cellular version of the Apple Watch. It will
still be able to call nine one one in emergency
if you need it to, even if you don't pay
that five to ten dollars a months your cell phone carrier.
Now I did ask Apple that specifically, because that's not
really something I can test out. I knew that was
true of cell phones, but I was just curious with
(42:20):
Apple Watches. But that is the case now, I say
in America, in the United States only because different countries
have different laws about that. So, for instance, in Japan,
it's illegal for a non activated cell phone device to
call nine one one, and I don't know why that is.
Maybe that's just to keep the phone calls down from
you know, prank calls and stuff. But in the US,
(42:42):
at least, any device that is a cellular device can
call nine one one, even if it is not active
on a plan, so good to know. Anyway, eight hundred
dollars for the Apple Watch Ultra. This is available later on.
I don't have the day. Oh uh oh, Friday September
twenty third, so it's available, well not this Friday or
not next Friday, but the next Friday later in September.
(43:05):
I don't know. I think it's really cool. I don't
know if that's for me, but it's definitely a cool device.
Thirty six hours of battery life, sixty hours of battery
life if you put on the low power mode. So
that's that's kind of a big device. You know who
you are if you need that device, right, You know
that you're an extreme sports person. You know that you're
an extreme athlete or are hiking, you know, in the
(43:27):
middle of nowhere, and that's something that appeals to you,
all right, Bobby says, I was one of the few
lucky to actually snag one of those hundred dollars fire
TVs on Amazon Prime Day. The one problem I seem
to be having is that there doesn't seem to be
an answer to if I leave the room for more
than five minutes, my TV shuts off. I have googled
(43:48):
and googled, but can't find a way to change the
settings so the TV doesn't turn off. There's plenty of
explanations out there and how to get the fire stick
to stop turning the TV off, but not this Prime
day one hundred dollars. I figured since you got one,
you might know the answer. I'm sure lots of us
would appreciate the info. Thanks Bobby. Bobby. Yes, I did
(44:09):
get one of these one hundred dollars Amazon fire TVs.
I have since handed it over to my in laws
who are using it in kind of like a kid's
playroom situation, and so far we have not had this issue.
So I think there could be two things going on here.
Number One, you might have set this TV up in
demo mode and that might be causing it to time
(44:31):
out after five minutes and go into some sort of
demo mode. That's just a guess. I don't know. I
haven't heard any talk from my in laws that this
TV is doing this, so I think this could either
be a lemon or it could be in that demo
mode situation. So here's what I would do. I would
(44:52):
or it could the other thing it could be doing,
is it may not be turning off, but it may
be activating a screen saver that is just blank, So
that could be another way. So I would here's my
order of things. Number one, I'd look at the screen
saver and see what that's set to and see what
the timeout is on that screen saver. Number two, I
would reset the TV, like, go into the settings and
(45:14):
go back to a factory reset and start fresh, and
watch every menu as you go through. If it still
happens after that, I would contact Amazon and get a
replacement TV. So it sounds like it could just be
a software thing or kind of a you know, just
a setting somewhere, But it sounds like you've gone through
the settings pretty thoroughly, so maybe you just got a
(45:37):
defective TV. I mean, they sold thousands of these things,
so there's a chance that it's defective. But Amazon should
make good on that TV. There's a warranty on it.
So it's been you know, a couple months at Prime
day was in July, so I think that you should
be good. If not, send me an email hello at
richontech dot TV, and I will escalate the issue to
(45:59):
Amazon and make sure that you get the help that
you need. But you know. That's you know, sometimes I'll
do that for folks. You know, if they're really stuck
in a place where they can't seem to get any
help with something, I will, you know, if I can,
I'll step in. I don't you know. Look, I don't
have any special privileges at these companies, but sometimes they'll
listen to me a little bit more just because you know,
(46:21):
they know that I'll report on it on social media
or on TV if there's some kind of you know,
widespread issue that they're sort of covering up or not
really helping people with. So that's that's what I'm talking about.
All right, let's talk about the AirPods Pro so AirPods Pro.
And again, you know, I tell you all this stuff.
(46:41):
I did have a whole day yesterday. I'm not sure
I can talk about this, but I'm whatever. I did it.
So I spent the whole day at the Apple campus
yesterday going hands on with these products, and so not
just during the event, but after the event. I got
a lot of time to sort of play with these
products and to really see what they're all about, and
(47:02):
not just that, but talk to the experts that help
create them. And so I you know, really have a
good knowledge of these things, a working knowledge of how
they work, without one hundred percent playing with them for
you know, days on end. Just yet, I will fully
review them, but that takes some time. AirPods Pro so
new chip inside. It's been a while, It's been about
(47:22):
what three years since the AirPods Pro came out. New
chip inside H two it's called H one was the
first one. H two chip is going to cancel as
much as twice as much noise as the last AirPods Pro. Now.
I love the first generation AirPods Pro. I thought they
were really good. There were some things I didn't like
(47:44):
about them, specifically the transparency mode and how they felt
like you could be underwater a little bit with the
noise cancelation. I don't sense that in these new generations.
So if you didn't like the first generation of AirPods Pro,
I would definitely see what the new generation feels like
in your ears. So the transparency mode, specifically, this is
(48:09):
on by default, and what it does is it lets
you hear stuff around you. But it's you know, you
keep these EarPods, these air pods in you can still
hear your surrounding areas and what they've done with this
transparency mode is it's sort of adaptive and so even
if you don't have active noise cancelation on. Let's say
you're doing transparency mode, you're walking down the street, you
(48:31):
hear a siren from an ambulance, it will actually lower
the decibels of that siren to make it more comfortable
for you know, your ears not going to drown it out.
You'll still hear it, but it's not going to be
as like jarring to your ears. So these actually do
take out some of the environmental noise, which I thought
was pretty interesting. If they didn't fit in your ears.
There's a new smaller ear tip, so there's an extra
(48:53):
small ear tips, so now you get extra small, small, medium,
and large. This is kind of funky. I didn't try
this feed sure, but I guess I will at some point.
But you now use the camera on your iPhone to
measure your ear and your head and it takes a
reading of the shape of your ear and head and
then adjust the audio for your ear and head. I
(49:17):
don't know, I mean, really, I'm not an audio file
so maybe I just don't appreciate that kind of thing.
But you know, if it makes audio sound better, so
be it. I know that that's a thing, and I
know other companies are doing that, and so clearly it's
a thing. The other big change is now the touch
controls in the AirPods Pro on the stems. Used to
be able to kind of squeeze them to do different things,
(49:38):
to activate Siri or to you know, change the music
to the next song, play pause, you know, change the
transparency mode or active noise cancelation. Now you can swipe
up or down on them and adjust the volume. And
it's a very easy motion. It's a very simple motion
and it works. I did test it out and it
(49:59):
actually is quite useful. You get a slightly better battery life,
so an extra one and a half hours of listening time.
I thought that the AirPods Pro first generation listening time
was amazing. I always joked that I barely ever had
to charge these things. But these apparently get even more time.
So now you get six hours extra total listening time
(50:22):
over the first generation. So I feel like AirPods. I mean,
unless you're going on an international trip and listening for
like twenty four hours, I don't think that it's that
big of a deal. And Tony's asking if they're waterproof.
I don't think they're waterproof, but they're definitely water resistant.
And so I dropped mine in a cup of coffee
and they survived. The first generation. I thought they were dead,
(50:46):
and no, they came back to life after they dried out.
I did rinse them off and dried them out for
a day or two and they still work. Let's see.
The new thing about charging is the case is I
believe it's charging wireless charging by default, and you can
now charge the case with an Apple Watch charger, so
that's kind of nice if you're in that Apple ecosystem.
(51:06):
You can charge the case with an Apple Watch charger,
so one less charger to bring with you. They also
have a newly designed charging case that has a lanyard
loop on it. So there's a lanyard loop on the
charging case, which means that you can attach a third
(51:27):
party lanyard to the case, which makes it easier to
hold clip to a belt, whatever you want. The lanyard
that they showed us as a demo was thirteen dollars
and Apple does not include a lanyard in the box.
But there's going to be plenty of accessories that will
latch onto this. It's just a standard lanyard loop area.
The other thing is that they've built find My into
(51:49):
the case, so you can now locate your charging case
with precision on the iPhone. So if you have an
iPhone twelve or thirteen I think it's a twelve or
thirteen or fourteen, your phone can actually guide you to
the case with precision. There's also a speaker on the case,
so the case can emit a tone, so it tells
(52:10):
you when it's you know where it is. And if
you look at my instagram at rich On Tech, you
can see I did a little demo of the sound
on the case. It's actually quite loud. It's not like
the sound that the AirPods themselves emit, which can be
kind of soft. It's quite loud coming from the speaker
on the on the actual case. These are two hundred
(52:30):
and fifty dollars, same as before. They'll be available on Friday,
September twenty third, and I will tell you that I think,
just in the demos that I got that the AirPods
Pro second generation are are much better. Maybe I don't know.
I think they're more comfortable. In the year they sound better,
and the noise cancelation is definitely better, and so is
(52:52):
that transparency mode. So if you didn't like the first
generation of AirPods pro, I know, two hundred fifty dollars
is a lot for a pair of earbuds, but it's
something that you come to really love and enjoy. And
my wife and I bought her the regular AirPods. We
got to the checkout at the Apple Store and she
had no idea how much they were, but you know,
(53:13):
they ring us up and I think they were like
two hundred bucks. And she said, wait, two hundred dollars
for earbuds. What are you crazy? And I said no, no,
just trust me. And they turn out to be her
favorite device for the iPhone because she just loved them.
I mean, they just until they stop working. I don't
know what the deals with AirPods, but there's this weird
thing that a lot of times, like the right or
(53:33):
left like doesn't charge, or the right or left like
stops working and it like doesn't connect. So I've seen
that problem a couple of times with her AirPods, some
older AirPods I had. So I hope that that problem
is gone. And let's see what did someone ask what's
transparency mode. Transparency mode means that you can have these
AirPods in your ears and you can still hear what's
(53:56):
going on around you. So it's sort of it sort
of takes in the outside sounds, it processes them, but
you're still hearing them. Kind of like the way they
sound and kind of true to life, just maybe a
little bit less, all right, Dennis says, need your opinion
(54:17):
on two phones. I'm not an Apple fan, so I'm
looking at the Galaxy Flip four or the Pixel six
Pro currently using an LG stylos. Dennis, the Galaxy Flip
four is a very endearing device. There's something very fun
about the Galaxy Flip four. So if camera is not
your number one priority, if kind of like having a
(54:39):
fun overall device is an Android device is your thing,
I would go with the Flip four. The Pixel six
Pro is great. I just find that it's a little big,
whereas the Flip four is going to be a lot
easier to hold and handle. And also the Pixel is
coming out with a new version on October seventh, and
so they're having a big event in New York City
(55:00):
where they're going to launch the Pixel seven so I
would hold off on the Pixel six for now because
I think the Pixel seven is going to be better,
and I think the size of the Pixel seven is
going to be better than the Pixel six Pro. And
I don't know if you need the Pixel six the
pro or the seven Pro because that just adds a
zoom lens and I'm not sure you really need that.
(55:21):
So I would check out the Galaxy Flip. You do
not get zoom on the Galaxy Flip. You do, but
it is optical and so you don't get any sorry,
it is digital zoom. You don't get optical zoom on
the Flip four, so it is an optical zoom. So yeah,
you can go two x four x ten x whatever,
but it's going to be a digital zoom, so it's
(55:42):
not going to be as good as an optical zoom.
All right, let's go to another question here while we
still have another couple of minutes. Lisa says, you always
seem to have good advice, so I need some. My
husband has hearing aids that make holding the phone up
to his ear impossible. He uses the speaker phone Future,
but still has problems listening even at the loudest volume
(56:03):
for use at home. Can you recommend a speaker so
we can use to link to or a cable to
increase the volume. I await your suggestions. Thank you, Lisa, Lisa.
Home Pod Mini, home Pod Mini two words, three syllables,
two words. HomePod Mini fantastic extra speaker. You link it
(56:23):
up to your iPhone. You can make and received calls
on it. It works as a speaker phone and it
will be significantly louder than anything that the iPhone can admit.
It's ninety nine dollars regularly. I'm sure you can find
it on sale for cheaper than that. But it's very simple.
It's very easy, same thing as speakerphone. When the answers
the phone, you just toggle a little switch there and
(56:44):
it says, you know, do you want to connect that
call to the HomePod. Yeah, it's been a while since
I use the HomePod. But it may even ring on
the HomePod. There may be a setting to have the
HomePod ring or to answer by default on the HomePod
as well, so I would check those features. But HomePod
Mini super simple, super easy. Put it next to your
husband's chair and you know he can just use that
(57:07):
for you know, whatever he needs for listening. Tony says,
how is this when someone leaves their room phone in
a room and you can hear the sound on the phone.
I'm not sure what that means. All right, one more
question before I go here. Doug says, if your family
(57:27):
or close friends was telling you they were switching cell
phone plans from Verizon, what cell phone company would you suggest?
Thank you, Doug C Junior, Doug, that's an interesting one.
I will say that I have Verizon, and I've been
not very impressed with the service lately. And I don't
know if it's just my phone. I don't know if
it's the LA area. I don't know if it's where
(57:48):
I live, where I work, but it seems to me
that the Verizon service either going through some growing pains
or some issues. I'm not sure, but it has become
spottier than I like. And I was on a very
important call in my studios at KTLA where I literally
(58:09):
could not make or receive a phone call. It was
that bad. I had to go outside and that has
never happened before in the history of working at that studio.
So I don't know what they changed. What's different. In
my home? My Apple Watch doesn't get a good signal,
which is really also annoying. So I don't know, I'm
not bagging on Verizon. I still like them. I still
(58:30):
think overall from everywhere I've traveled in the world that
Verizon has been very good. But I think that when
it comes to the service that you have. For instance,
my dad just switched to a different cell phone carrier
because his carrier didn't work where he vacations, and so
he wanted a phone that works where he goes on
the weekends to you know, this little cabin, and so
(58:53):
he wanted a phone that works there, And everyone that
goes up there says, oh, yeah, this service works up there,
So he switched to that service provider. And so I
think it really just comes down to where you work,
where you live, and what you're doing. So for years
I would go to USC games at the Coliseum and
no carrier work there. I think maybe, I mean I
(59:15):
can't even remember, but maybe Verizon worked there but at
and T T Mobile didn't. So I know a lot
of people like their carrier. They like it because it
works where they need it to work, and the price
is right for them. So I think that carriers to
look at include T Mobile, Mint, Mobile. If you want
a very good value Visible which is owned by Verizon.
If you want a cheaper Verizon plan, let's see at
(59:39):
and T. If you want just a kind of a
rock of a carrier that has just worked and it's
just solid and they've got lots of features, and you
know it's going to work in a lot of good places. Verizon.
I love their UW when you have it, like the
Ultra wideband is just phenomenal. When it's there, it's pretty phenomenal.
(01:00:00):
And Johnny at Apple says, do you think flip phones
already yet? I do. I think with the Flip four,
it's finally at a place where I can recommend it
to people. I think that you have to be willing,
like I said in my review, you have to be
willing to accept some of the pros and cons of
a flip phone. And the pros or that it's cool,
it's different, it's fun, it's unique. It gives you various
(01:00:20):
like angles that you can watch videos. You always have
a tripod. The downside is that it's a foldable phone.
The screen could crack, it could break. You're not going
to get as good of a camera system as you
can on the regular Samsung phones, but it's kind of fun.
And finally Bella says, how about Spectrum. You know, Spectrum
(01:00:41):
Phone is fine, I personally don't like it because it
links you to Spectrum service and I don't want to
be I want less bundled products because when you bundle products, yeah,
you might save some money, but now you're you're less
likely to switch when you're bundled up. So if I
have Internet with Spectrum and I have Spectrum on my phone,
(01:01:04):
I'm not going to switch from Spectrum if there's a
better deal that comes along, because it's too much of
a hassle to switch. And so that for that reason,
even though yeah, you can save a lot of money
maybe with Spectrum, I just would rather have my services independent.
And so I just like the flexibility of not having
everything bundled in. And I'm telling you, mark my words,
(01:01:24):
we're seeing more and more bundles. So we're seeing like
the carriers, like Verizon, they just added a bundle that
gives you Apple One. You know, you've got used to
have HBO Max bundled with AT and T, although that's
been decoupled. T Mobile. You know, they give you Apple
TV Plus, they give you Netflix. The reason why they
bundle these things in is because you are going to
(01:01:45):
be less likely to switch because you're like, ah, it's
too much effort. I don't want to ruin my Verizon
or my Spectrum or my Hulu or my Disney Plus
or my Apple or whatever, because it's all kind of
intermingled and it's all mixed. So that is what I'm
talking about. And even with you know, someone mentioned insurance,
same thing. They bundle the insurance because you know, once
(01:02:06):
it's all bundled up, or you're really gonna go to
different places to shop around for different types of insurance.
So oh, no more questions. I think that this is
what I was looking for. That sound means this is
gonna do it or that's gonna do it for this
