(02:17):
when I first laid eyes on suspiciousSlim at that party, I was over
the side like a Jacob's letter. Her hair was as black as the lover's
despair, her eyes with the blueof the wash guy around a rainbow,
and she was the feminine architecture. What the at a bomb is the science?
Ah, There's never been anything likeit. I liked her and seemed

(02:43):
like me. In fact, sheseemed to be spending most of the evenings
trying to be alone with me.But another lovely flatter out maneuvered her.
The next day, I went tomy office a little late. I was
just sitting there at my desk tryingto make my checkbook agree with the bank
serious when the door opened and whowalked in? But I've explained the foolish

(03:09):
impulse to grab her and shout Ilove you by looking bored and saying hello,
hello, road. I guess Ishould have called an appointment. Oh
now, now look, first off, let's call me Richard, because I'm
going to call you Pat. I'mso glad you came in seeing me.
Pat. Let's get down to thehunt room and talk things over, Shalli

(03:30):
after a while, if you wantedit sounds charming, but I want it't
talk to you here alone first?Oh oh okay, what should we talk
about? Mister road Richard? Thankyou? I know this sounds dramatic.
There'sn't two attempts made in my lifein the past three weeks. M Well,

(03:50):
why would anybody want to harm you? I don't know, I really
don't. There's no reason that Ican think of. Who aren't you poor
kids? Where does these atte I'mfrom in your life take place at our
summer place up on lake the country? And there's nobody up there with any
motive for wanting you out of theway. Nobody. I don't know whether
you've ever been the lake to comesor not. It's a small resort,

(04:12):
just a few families have cast maybea better starts in the beginning. You
know, I don't really know muchabout you. Give me the whole story
when you know, all right,You already know. My name is Pat
Prine. My father was Michael's inthe attorney. Yes I knew of him.
Of course. Mother was much youngerthan dad. About a year after
he died, she married Herbert Lewis, the British artist. He was a

(04:36):
widower. He had a daughter,Diane. That's my age. She's a
lovely girl, very British English finishingschool and the wonderful musical education. Was
the best of friends. She gotmarried about three months ago to John Anderson,
the boy had known since he wasabout ten. They're very happy.
We're all up the lake together, all staying in the same cottage. Yes,

(04:59):
well, isn't exactly a cottage. We all call it that, but
it's really rather a large house.Okay. Now tell me about the attempts
on your life, how to hapthem? Well? That three weeks ago,
I got up earlier than the restof the family I often do.
I went down to the lake fora dip. I'm pretty good swimming.
I headed right out to the islandin the middle of the lake. I

(05:20):
heard a bullet whistle past my head. I dove under water and swam back
to the shore as long as Icould hold my breath. Then I came
up. I heard another bullet hitthe water and out of foot from me.
I was frightened to death. Istayed under water as much as I
could until I saw mother and Johncoming down for them morning dip, and

(05:40):
I swam in and joined them.Did you tell them about him. No,
I was afraid they'd laugh at me. There was another attempt later.
Yes, I always have a glassof milk in my room at night.
One night, for no reason atall, I gave it to my cat
indeed, and don't die. Shehad convultions and died. The veterinary that

(06:08):
she'd been poisoned. Somebody tried topoison me. Look, baby, I
think it's about time you're telling somebodyabout this. There's no future in being
murdered at all. That poisoned milkmakes it look like an inside job,
doesn't I don't see how it couldbe anyone in the house, mister Rogue.
There's only the family and no servants. Only Mary is a crooking While
she's like a mother, she wouldn'twant to hurt me. Richard, I'm

(06:31):
scared. I'm supposed to go backup to the lake tomorrow. I know
that the next time they've only succeedin killing me. What do you want
me to do? I want youto come up with me as a house
guest. No, I don't know. You're an investigator and mister Rogue,
Yes, Pat, you can protectme. We'll continue our story in just

(06:58):
a moment. The three essentials ofattractive, healthy looking hair are one cleanliness,

Now back to Dick Powell as privateinvestigator Richard Rogue in Rogue's gallery,

(08:20):
I couldn't understand why anybody would wantto prive this ugly old world of Patricia
Flenn's beauty. But she was convincedthat somebody was trying to promote her to
a better land than this. SoI accepted her invitation to be a house
guest at her family's eighteen room cabinon Lake decom Cit. I like to
be Uncle Tom on a cabin likethat. The living room was a little

(08:43):
smaller than the Los Angeles Union Station, but it was much more comfortable.
There was a fireplace at each endof it, about the size of the
entrance to the Hudson Tube, andthe room was done in rustic furniture with
down cushions. Every place you'll lookat the walls, you either got an
inquisitive look from a defunct moose ora cold stare from a motted fish.

(09:05):
If this was roughing it, Igave up my scouting too early. The
first evening I sat her on andtalked with Pat's mother, who looked thirty,
and her stepsister, Diane, wholooked dandy, and John Anderson,
who looked like John Anderson. Johnwas Diane's husband. We're so happy that

(09:26):
you could come up with Patricia.Mister rogue she hasn't been enjoying herself this
summer for some reason. She seemsso depressed. Well, girls of her
look should never be depressed. IfI went Patricia's mother, I think she
was in love. She has allthe symptoms. Are you the cause of
all this? Rogue? Well,I hope so, but I adopted.
It's an interesting thought. Where isit she went out for a walk down

(09:48):
around the lake? I suppose?Oh, well, perhaps we're keeping you,
mister rogue moonshiney know they romantic outfor the league. No. I
think if she had wanted me togo with her, she would have asked
me. You don't know, women, mister rogue are very settled. It's
really a lovely night. Come on, Diane, let's take a walk and
show mister rogue around the place alittle bit. No, you and mister
rogue go ahead, John, I'mgoing to stay in tonight. I about

(10:11):
this sniffles all day. I don'tthink I should be out in the night.
You'd better slip a coat on overyour sweater if you go out.
Mister rogue gets pretty chilly up herenights. Well, how about it,
a rogue, Shall we take alook around? Oh? Yes, certainly,
I'd like to take a look aroundthis place. Sure I'm not putting
you out, Oh not at all. I usually take a stroll before turning
in. Come on, okay,if you ladies will excuse us, of
course, I'll see would break withmister Rogue. I'd probably retired before you

(10:35):
return. It's so nice having youhere. Thank you, good night,
good night. Well you live veryquietly here on the lake Roadue, I'm
afraid you might find it a littledoll I could use a little quiet,
you know. Ted long Oh well, though quite a while. She's a

(10:56):
grand girl, as no, oneof the best strange kids. I think
she's the most beautiful girl I've everseen. There's something on her mind lately
at all. Doesn't seem to bequite her old caffree self. You've noticed
the two. She was very closeto her father, you know, hasn't
been two shots since he's dead.I'm kind of worried about her. Do

(11:18):
you think that's what she's brooding abouther father's death. I can't figure her
lately. She's changed completely. Can'tlook at it down there by the side
of the lake all alone as usual. Suppose she would resent it if he
joined it now we can try andsee a pat. You're receiving callers this
evening. Wow, you look mightybeautiful setting out there on the moonline.

(11:41):
That remark has my enthusiastic approval. How don't you called out here with no
rep petting? No, it's niceout here. I like to breathe.
I have a seat on the stand, mister Goad. Wow. Thanks,
Oh brother, this is the livebreaks out the David crocketting the garment.
Does a place come equipped with acanoe? Canoe, speedboat, rowboat?

(12:03):
Take a choice? Personally, Iprefer the speedboat. These both hands break,
yo, you and your elephant's memory. John used to make mad love
to me out there on at lake, mister Rogue before he was married.
Okay, well that was puppy love. Pats soon tired of me. What's
the program for tomorrow, Panna goRiley? Sure? Six o'clock. Then
at the stables six o'clock in themorning. Will the harshest to be awake

(12:26):
or they go to bed early? What are you looking for? Rogue?
Oh? My cigarettes? Because Ileft them on my coat. Can you
spare one? I didn't bring anywith me, did you, Pat?
You know I don't smoke. Well, I'm an awful slave. Looks like
I'm gonna have to go get them. I'll be back in a minute.
Okay, we'll be here. Ididn't know handsome John well enough to call

(12:50):
him a liar, but I didn'tknow he had cigarettes in his pocket.
It was hard for me to believethat a guy living in all that luxury
would begrudge a house guest a cigarettefor financial reasons, so I had to
assume that he wanted to be alongwith pat I felt as unnecessary as a
laugh at a funeral. As Iwalked back up to the house, the

(13:13):
French doors into the living room wereall put and I headed for them.
I wasn't making any noise walking inthe sand, and I stopped an embarrassment
when I heard the conversation which wasin progress in the room between Diane and
Patricia's mother. I tell you,I'm not going to put up at this
much longer. The brie pet throwsitself at John is sickening. John's old
enough to take care of himself.I believe Diane. She's doing everything she

(13:37):
can to cause trouble between John andme. Everything she hates me from Nettie
and John. Yes, I believeshe's still in love with John. She
always has been. And if shehadn't been away at school when you met
John and married him, Jeez, don't you dare say that again. Ever,
it's the truth. If it hadn'tbeen for you, John and Pet

(14:01):
would be married as they always plannedto be. She doesn't leave John alone.
Something terrible is going to happen toher. I love Jos He's nice.
You hate you hate the mendiant chalk. No, I don't hate you,
Diane, but I'm her mother.I want my daughter to be happy

(14:24):
again, and I'll do anything anythingto bring her happiness back. You can't
take John away from me. I'mgoing to have a talk with it now.
We're leaving here in the morning. When Diane left that room, you

(14:45):
could feel a hape radiating from her, like heat from a deepost stove.
She walked directly toward the spot whereI was standing, and I ducked back
into the shrubbery. I followed heras she headed for the couple on the
beach, and I was only afew feet behind her. When she stopped.
Hat and John were knee deep ina conversation that was a phone Lord
and the last note of asleep inthe beep. Diane listened so to die.

(15:09):
We have to do something about this, John, and we can't go
on this way if you don't tellher you wanted a voice. I don't
want a voice. Pack. Nowthat's final. I'm not going to let
the fact that you fancy yourself inlove with me ruin my whole life.
Make it over to night, donemaking on me. I'm at six tomorrow
morning. Good better go in.All right, I'm eat in the morning,
Pack, but you go in,John, I love you. This

(15:37):
group of lovely people was just fullof potential dramas a little bitter. On
opening night, I followed Diane backinto the house, walked noisily in the
front door, and said good night. I thought I heard somebody enter and
leave my room while I was underthe shower, but there was nothing much
I could do about it. Theroom was empty when I re entered it,
and I helped myself to a drinkof water from the turmos on the

(16:00):
night table. The water tasted funny. As I hit the pillow, I
knew what it was. I wentup like a match a bucket of water,
and when I opened my eyes Iwas on Cloud ape. You Gore

(16:26):
was looking me over, and thatlittle dame was there. Think you guys,
You guys ain't cheepy? What happenedon your head? Oh? Never
mind? What's that girl doing here? If you're going to ask me for

(16:48):
permission to get married, the answeris no, Yeah, but cheep.
Don't you think it's about tying youwhen I sudden down? Don't you get
tired of getting hit on the head. Look you go. You've got all
you can do to take care ofyour job as my alter ego without taking
on any more responsibilities. I don'tmeet any can no roy I ask you

(17:18):
man to man to man anything youask me a spook to man, yougor,
you're nothing but a figment of myimagination. He's a little off his
trolley right now. No, thisis no time to be making a decision
which will affect the entire lives offree people. You're not clear in that

(17:41):
he Did it ever occur to youthat if I was clear in my head,
I wouldn't be here on Cloud eighttalking to you in that lettyputian Lana
Turner. This Cloud eight is strictlynon coeducational. Now you throw her out
of here you. Oh no,no, no, I have to rest

(18:06):
a while. Go away, yougo help me all right over? You?
No, no, cut it off. I strangle you, but your
own beard. You gore. Stoppushing you see it? When I woke

(18:38):
up, the sun was high inthe heavens. My head felt like a
busy blacksmith's anvil, and my tonguewas made of mink. I leaped out
of bed like a startled fawn, and oh boy, I sat back down
fast. I dressed without loring myhead, and made a belated appearance at

(19:03):
the breakfast table. Pat and hermother were having breakfast. John came in
a two months after me. Hedidn't look well either. Good morning,
John. Where's Diane? I don'tknow. We had a bit of a
disagreement last night. She slept ina guest room and I just looked in.
She wasn't there. She probably wentfor a morning dip. Have you

(19:26):
been in here this morning? Pat? Not me. I slept. I
couldn't wake up this morning. Whateverhappened to our horseback? Ryan? Pan?
Oh did you get up for it? Oh me? Oh no,
No, I slept. I slayedthrough. As a matter of fact,
I never slept a lot in mylife. Yeah, that goes for me
too. And I feel terrible thismorning? So do I I feel dopy?
How about a canoe ride after breakfast? Pat? It was both good?

(19:48):
Maybe that's what I need? DoI look as stupid as I feel.
I don't know what you mean. You look kind as sleepy. You
look like I feel somebody tope melast night, Pat? You did?

(20:12):
Are you sure? Honey? Iknow? And I've been stepped a tricky
mickey last night? Will run ofthose times? Who would have wanted me
out of the way last night?I don't know. I'm sure somebody told
me last night too, Richard. It's almost as some crazy personal hiding there.
Maybe we should call a police.Look, Chicken, that that step

(20:33):
sister of yours. It's kind ofburned for you, Diane. No,
don't look so surprised. You knowit. I happened to over here a
little conversation between Diane and your motherlast night. Diana lifted your boyfriend,
didn't you. You're asking for trouble, Pat, hiding back like that?
I Hey, what's Mary? What'sthat over there? Oh? Riches?

(21:00):
Don't look Diane, isn't it?Yes? My white bathing suit she's wearing
my bathing suit. She's dead.Pat somebody shot her. Hello Richard,
whoever shot her thought they were shootingme. We'll return to our story in

(21:27):
just a moment. First, aword to the ladies. You know how

your hair meets the test. Byshampooing regularly with Fitch's Saponified Coconut oil shampoo,

to look at easy to arrange.Remember always to ask for Fitch f I
t fitches selfonified coconut oil shampoo. Now back to Dick Powell as private investigator

(22:42):
Richard Rogue in Rogues Gallery. Well, Pat Flann had proved her point.
Her half sister Diane was lying thereon the beach, dead shot while swimming
in Lake Decompson, wearing Pat's whitesatin swimsuit. I stood over Diane's body

(23:07):
while Pat ran screaming hysterically up tothe house to get John. They were
back in a few minutes, andthe three of us stood looking down at
the dead girl. Oh, darling, John, take it easy, old
man. Let go of me,Rogue, let me. I know how
you feel, John, Oh,you know how I feel. You ever
loved anybody so much you couldn't getyour breath then had them murdered? You

(23:32):
know how? I how could youknow? John? Just please, you
don't away from me. Patty, you're here. This is all your faults.
You hadn't been such a supid littlefool, she wouldn't be dead.
I'll take it easy, John. You don't know what you're saying, could
you blaby? John? Whoever killedher thought they were shooting me. I
wish they had. You were thecause of all the trouble. You've hated

(23:53):
her ever since we were married. You think she stole me from you?
How could you think that you wouldn'tnever anything to me. We'd better get
up to the house. The policehave to be called. This is murder.
You know you take care of that. Of course, you better come
with me, John, I'll stayhere with the an. Let's take that

(24:15):
with you. God, leave herout here with me. It's all good
job. Who as you wouldn't getback to that house. And when the
police get here, rob something thattell him bring him right out here to
me? All right, all right, John, Oh this is a horrible

(24:36):
thing. Pat Tell me, howdid your mother react to the news of
her stepdaughter's murder. She didn't sayanything. She just said, oh,
Richard, you don't think mother,I don't know. It looks like everybody
in the house was dope last night. But your mother, Mother, she
wouldn't want to hurt me. You'reoverlooking the fact that whoever shot Diane might

(25:00):
have known just who was wearing thatwhite bathing suit, aren't you You couldn't
have been mother. It was someonetrying to kill me. That's just a
theory. Go call the police tohim to come up here. I'm going
to have a talk with your mother. As soon as Pat was out of

(25:21):
the way, I ran up thestairs to my room. I took the
stopper out of the thermis and sniffedthe water in it. There had been
coral in that water. I knewthe pungent smell of it. I visited
Pat's bedroom and John's and sampled theorder of the water at their bedsides.
It was a very interesting experiment.I headed for the bedroom occupied by Pat's
mother and hesitated outside the door. There was the order of burning cloth.

(25:47):
I opened the door and walked in. She was on her knees in front
of the fireplace, trying to burna scanty red swimsuit, a damp one.
What do you mean coming into mybedroom, mister rogue. Your step
daughter Diane has been murdered, andI'm investigating the circumstances. Give me that
bathing suit. Give it here.No, I won't. I'm sorry,

(26:08):
I'll have to take it. Then, you know destroying evidence is bad business.
Give it here. I killed her. I killed Diane, mister Rogue.
You did why she was ruining mydaughter's life. I killed her this
morning. Where there's a bathing suitand into it? Why are you trying

(26:30):
to destroy it? I didn't wantthe police to know that I'd been in
the lake this morning. Oh Isee, well the Polica mother. What
are you doing with that swim suit? Pat? Whose is it? It
was done? You might as wellface it. Pat, your mother killed
I aane. You just confessed tome. He was bringing that suit to

(26:52):
keep the police from finding out thatshe'd been in swimming this morning. That's
ridiculous. Look at that. Solook at the size of it. I'm
not looking no more into that.Pet. No, No, she couldn't,
could she? But you could?Pat? And if I did it,
I killed her. Pat, don'tsay anything. The water on my
nightstand was drug last night, Pat, chloral so was John's, but yours

(27:15):
wasn't. And you shot Diane, didn't you know? Pat? Don't answer
him. I shot her. Ihated her. She was no good mother.
I did it. I killed her. I saw her sneaking around listening
to what John and I were sayinglast night, spying on us. I

(27:40):
gave her something to listen to.I made a date to meet John on
the island a day, six o'clockthis morning. I knew what she'd do.
I knew, Pet, Pet,how could you do? I'm glad
I did it. If I can'thave, I just as soon be did.

(28:04):
I'm only sorry I wasn't a littlemore clever, Pat, dear will
we'll get the best attorneys. No, not for me, Bless your heart.
That wasn't wonderful you try made forme. The police arrived a few

(28:34):
minutes later, and Pat told himeverything. Her diary was admitted as evidence
of her trial. Every day sincethe marriage of John and Diane, Pat
had planned Diane's death. The funnyattempts on her life that she told me
about were part of the build up. There could be no doubt about the
fact that Pat's mind had given awayunder the deadly poison of jealousy and hate.

(28:59):
She was I'm not guilty by areason of insanity, and was committed
to an institution all on account ofjealousy. Oh well, jealousy is a
very strange thing. You drive yourselfdaffy trying to prove something that you hope
isn't true, because if it is, you're going to drive yourself crazy trying
to convince yourself that it wasn't importantanyway. You know what I mean?

(29:34):
This is Dick Powell again. Ladiesand gentlemen. I hope you enjoyed our
story tonight. Ray Buffam wrote it, Leith Stevens composed and conducted the music
in the Ankelbach produced and directed.Next week we have a story for you
about a redheaded stranger, a youngwife, and something different a murder.

Doyle be here to tune in againnext week, same time, same station.
When you will again hear Dick Powellas private investigator Richard Rogue in Rogue's

between Fitch shampoos. You can keepyour hair shining and manageable by using a
few drops of Fitch's Ideal Hair Tonicevery day. Fitch's Ideal Hair Tonic is
not sticky or greasy, yet itgives your hair that well groomed look.

(31:00):
Welcome back, well a very goodmorality play the way it worked out,
and this is one of those episodeswhere Gerald Moore is a guest star but
did not actually commit the murder.Well, which is kind of different for
our Rogues Gallery. I've kind ofdeveloped the habit of when there's a murder
on an episode of Rogues Gallery andGerald Moore is on guessing that Gerald Moore's

(31:26):
character is the one who did anunusually end up to being right like three
out of four times. We dohave a listener comment from Melissa who says,
I love you're showing a fallen inlove with Rogues Gallery. Is the
voice of yougor actually William Tracy,Tracy who plays Peppy in the Shop around
the Corner with Jimmy Stewart and MargaretSullivan. It sure does sound like him.

(31:48):
Well, thanks so much, Melissa. It is actually not him.
Rather, it is Peter Leeds,a well known sort of I guess Radio
and Tell of Vision character actor, and I'm thinking for one of our am
extras coming up, we might playa Peter Leeds in another role. He

(32:09):
didn't have a whole lot of storingrules. Well, we'll see what we
can put together. All Well, thanks so much for your comments and questions.
We will be back tomorrow with letGeorge do it and next week another
episode of Rogues Gallery. In themeanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen

I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
