Thank you so much for your financialsupport. And now here is today's episode
where there's a Will, There's aMotor. F W. Fitch Company prevents

(01:19):
Save your Hair. U. FW. Fitch Company, makers of
Fitchers, Denver Remover shampoo and IdealHair Tonic prevents Dick Powell as private investigator
Richard Rogue in Rogues Gallery. Rogspeaking business was booming like California real estate,

(01:49):
and I was lending my magnificent talentsfor about a half a dozen different
investigations. On this day I'm goingto tell you about. I was as
happy as a catnic canary cage.On my way back from lunch, I
stopped at the cigar stand in thelobby of my building to buy a packet
of cigarettes. Herb Hind, thecharacter who owns and operates that cough emporium
when he's not playing Jen Ronnie withme and cheating, gave me a big

(02:13):
win. Herb's a little guy whowas at all times conversant with a score,
who is playing and whether the gameis fixed or not. He's slightly
bigger than the fox, twice assmart, and that balding gray head it
is, contains more pertinent knowledge thanyou're nearest library. When he slyly closed
his left optic and justice slyly openedit again, I bent by many torso

(02:37):
over the counter and gave him myundivided attention. He rogue, Hey,
you got company, Rogui big stuff. Yeah, yeah, somebody wedding in
the office. Yeah, a coupleof million bucks waiting up there. Angela
Mullins, Angela Mullins, yehead, that's right at Rachel whistle from anyone.
She's got ten year door Roguie's moneyand she's looking for a private investigator.

(02:57):
Something's up. But look after youshake hands with her. Be sure to
count your fingers. Yeah, Istand. She throws a door round like
an armless a woman. Yeah, she ain't had it a cool movie.
And when her husband kicked the bucketand she's running up to devil now by
sharp dudes. You know, Iunderstand she killed a husband with her meanness.
Wouldn't even give enough to eat. She's got a niece and a nephew,

(03:19):
her only liver relative Niche lives withher nephews, married and lives in
San Francisco. She won't give eitherof them a dime. Meanest woman in
the world. She's sixty. Don'tyou got her? How do you know
all these things? What have youbeen doing making a study of the old
girl? Just in case she everdropped in to talk with me? You
know how how the rugging Wanting aplace like this, you get all the

(03:39):
gossip her. If you're the poorman's winshield, you store it up information
like a squirrel store is up nuts. Ye oh no, no, no,
what you see. I'm just adummy. I wouldn't be running a
little stand like this. I'd havea big one, big you know,
in a better building. Now,how about some jin running in my appipement.
Tonight, goat shore short, I'llbe over at nine. I'll admit

(04:06):
that I was running a high feverin my curiosity department during the elevator ride,
which whisked me toward my interview withAngela Mullins. The old lady was
a legend in my town. Shewas a rascible, mean, miserly,
and cruel. She drove the onlyremaining electric car in the world and drove
it wide open, right through theheaviest traffic. She had a sea bag

(04:28):
full of residence mortgages and took greatpersonal delight in foreclosing them. Grand girl.
She was waiting in my outer office, black bonnet tied under her chin,
black alpocket dress, shanny with age, low heeled button shoes, and
gimlet eyes. You're Richard Rome, the Investigator. Yes, you don't look
as smart as the newspaper stories aboutyour sound. Well, I'm quite a

(04:48):
bit brighter than I look, Ihope. So you know who I am.
Yes, of course, of courseyou're missus Angela Mullin. Yes,
right, I school. You thinkI'm a little crazy, most people do.
Do you think I'm a miserly oldhead? You know? I hardly
ever think about it. Sit down, please, missus mullins, I will.
I want to talk with you, rogue, but first I want to
know what your charges are. Onedepends on the case. You tell me

(05:10):
what you want me to do,and I'll name my price. If you
want me badly enough, you'll payit. If you don't, I've I've
lost nothing but time. Now whatdo you want me to do, young
man? I've done business with peoplelike you for over half a century.
I don't tell my problems until Iget a price. I've got great respect
for the sanctity of womanhood and forold age, so I'm not going to

(05:30):
ask you to leave until you're arrested. If you're as clever as you think
you are, you can accomplish whatI want you to do in twenty four
hours only your charge. It's fortwenty four hours, depends on the work.
It's as simple as you say itis. It'll cause you go five
hundred dollars for the first twenty fourhours. I've hundred dollars. I'll take
it, mister rogue. I wantyou to find out who it was who

(05:51):
stole my will, stole your will? Yes, a few weeks ago,
I was supposed to die a halfwith a doctor who's been taking care of
me for many years told me Iwas going to die. My relatives had
a great celebration, I suppose Ifor them, though I lived. Yes,
I say you did. Why areyou supposed to die of my heart?
I'm supposed to have a bad heart. I's as strong and steady as

(06:12):
yours. I feels fine, butthat food doctor keeps warning me to take
care of myself, trying to makean invalid of me. Mister Ogue.
Look, if you had a heartattack two weeks ago, shouldn't you be
home in bed. I came downto see my dentist. He's here in
your building. I had a twofollowing mean that was my excuse for getting
out of a house without my spyingmeat, knowing I was coming down to
you. Somebody stole my will, mister rogue, and if I died to

(06:33):
day, I would die intestate. My money would all go to my only
living relatives, a niece whom Iloathe and a nephew whom I detest.
Now tomorrow I'm going to see mylawyer and write another one, just like
the one which was stolen. Isee with what disposition to the will make
of your state? I left fivethousand to each of those helpless little fools,
and all the rest to a missionarysociety. You think it was either

(06:56):
your niece or your nephew who stolethe will? Who else would have any
interest in it? I kept itin a strong box under my bed.
It's gone now, strong box.And all ah, here's your five hundred
dollars. Whoever stole that will expectme to die. They were disappointed the
last time, mister Roge, andnow I don't know what they'll do next.
All right, all right, now, Now your nephew lives in San

(07:16):
Francisco, doesn't he? Yes?How did you know that? Oh?
I'm an investigator. I try tokeep informed of everything. Was your nephew
in town at the time the worlddisappeared? He was? He was by
my bedside, waiting for me todie and arguing with me. I thave
your partner, mister Rogue, Angela, you should be at home in bed.
I told you that when you leftmy office, and I told you
I wasn't gone there until I tookcare of some business. Sam This is

(07:39):
my dentist, mister Rogue. SamuelHall oh, yes, we've passed the
lobby several times. Sure if youelevators, how are you doctohol K?
Thank you, Angela. I wantyou to go right, Sam. If
you don't stop ordering me around tellingyou for your own good go home now.
I'll see you there to night. And if that new crown anstall gives
you an remember this, mister rogue. Our discussion has been strictly private.

(08:00):
Now she'll help me out of thischair. I go home, of course,
yes, I'll see you both needto talk this evening at my home.
I'll be there at five hundred dollarscheck in my pocket did its best
to pay for the depression I feltthat afternoon, and it came in second.

(08:22):
I didn't like Angela Mullins. Icalled up some of the old timers
around the banks and the newspapers intown to put the bite on them for
some information about the old girl. And the best any of them could say
for her was that she had beenthe best speller in the third grade.
Evidently she'd done nothing decent since myconscience told me to give back to five
bills and bow out of the case. Five hundred dollars is a lot of

(08:45):
money. But I have to shaveevery morning, and when I shave,
I have to look at myself. So I decided to turn the case down.
When I arrived in front of thedilapidated old mansion where Angela Mullins lived
and counted her money, there weretwo other cars in the driveway. One
was an old model coop with theear marks of hard use. The other

(09:05):
was a shiny sedan with the insigniaof a doctor on it. It was
just eight o'clock as I went upthe creaky steps across the porch and knocked
with the old fashioned knocker. Hello, mister Rope, I'm afraid we're too
late. What you mean we're toolate? Doctor Hall, I'm right on
time. We're too late, misterRope. Angela had a heart attack at

(09:26):
six o'clock. She's dead. We'llcontinue our story in just the moment.
First. Sometimes after we've talked aboutpitch shampoo, some one will remark,
yes, but I still don't seehow a shampoo will remove dandruff. Well,
there are really two reasons. Thefirst lies in the nature of dandruff

(09:48):
itself. Contrary to many ideas, scientists do not consider dandruff to be a
disease, but a natural scalp condition. Therefore dandruff has to be removed,
not cured. The second reason isthat Fitch shampoo removes dandruf for the first
application, and this means not onlyloose dandruff but the kind that clings to
the scalp as well. For Fitzshampoo penetrates the thousands of tiny hair openings

(10:11):
on the scalp, cleansing them thoroughlyand dissolving every trace of dandruff. Ask
for a big economical bottle of Pitch'sdandroof remover shampoo at your drug or toilet
gooods counter, or have a professionalapplication at your barber or beauty shop.
Remember Fitch is the only shampoo maidwhose guarantee to remove dandruff is backed by

(10:31):
one of the world's largest insurance firms. Use it regularly each week. Now
back to Dick Powell as private investigatorRichard Rogue. In Rogue's gallery, Angela

(10:52):
Mullins was dead. Whoever had liftedthat strong box containing her well from under
her bed had made millionaires of theonly two living relatives the old lady left
behind. I had accepted a fivehundred dollar fee for finding out who the
strong box lester? While when Iwalked into the house, the nephew,
Paul Warner, the niece Claire Mullins, and doctor Hall, the dentists were

(11:13):
there. Paul and Claire were inthe living room when doctor Hall ushered me
in. Claire was as stunning asa blackjack behind the year and was the
lyrics to every love song. Shewas sitting in a big old fashioned chair
crying. Paul was standing in frontof the fireplace, his rugged face caricatured
into a sad scowl. Doctor Hallintroduced me, Claire, this is Richard

(11:35):
Rope, private investigator Fair Mullins.Mister Rope, how do you do?
Hello? And this is Paul Warner, mister Rope and graather than your Warner,
I asked. Doctor Stevens is stillupstairs, mister Rope, He'll be
here in a moment. I supposemay I squat your businesses here at this
time, mister Rome with your aunt'scommissioned me as afternoon to do a job
for she doesn't need any jobs donefor now she's dead. Yes, I

(11:56):
know, I'm sorry, You're sorry. I'm not. Oh, don't say
that. After all, she wasyour mother's sister. I'm sorry, Claire,
but I can't be hypocritical. Theonly reason I'm sorry she's dead is
I wanted to talk with her tonight. I wanted to try again to
borrow some money from her. Anddon't worry about that, Paul, I
can help you out with the amountyou want. Mister rogue, I think
you've got to conduct some other times. Your aunt's death doesn't in my job

(12:16):
for her, miss What do youmean though, I still have to find
out who stole her will from underher bed when she had her last heart
attack. Her will, Yeah, she came to see me about that afternoon.
He'll means something has happened to thatwill, the one that left everything
to that mission into better someplace.Has she written another will? No?
No, not that I know. She said she was going to make a

(12:37):
new one tomorrow. Do you knowanything about the missing will, mister Warner?
No, are you accusing me ofthis death? Rogue? I'm not
accusing anybody at the moment. Butthere were only two people in the world
who stood the wind by the disappearanceof that world. I don't understand what
you mean, mister him. Ifyour aunt died without leaving a will.
Her estate will be divided between herliving heirs. That's you and Warner.

(12:58):
Eh, that's right, Claire,ha ha, we're rich Oh, mister
Rogue, I don't think this respectthe change to discuss the affair of the
missing wills. I would like totalk to the doctor on the case.
Who excuse me? Please? Whydo you want to talk to doctor Stephens
Robe? Because I think under thecircumstances that he should be very sure the
death was caused by unaided heart failure. Before he signed that death certificate.

(13:20):
Missus Mullins was afraid of an attempton her live. Do you think one
of us murgertives for money? It'sbeen done before. I'm not saying it
was done this time, but Ithink there should be an autopsy to protect
the heirs from suspicion. As longas neither you had anything to do with
your ram's death, I'm sure you'llagree that such a procedure is for your
protection. I here to talk ofan autoptsey in here. Oh you're doctor
Stevens. Yes, this is RichardRogue, the private investigator, Doctor Stevens.

(13:43):
Oh, yes, mister Rogue.Could I help you in any way?
I'm working for the late Missus Mullins. Doctor, you are you positive
that her death was due to aheart attack? Are you questioning my knowledge
of my profession, mister Rouge,I'm merely asking you a question. Doctor.
Under the circumstances surrounding the death ofMissus Mullins, there is a possibility
of murder. I'm sure you wouldn'tcare to assist a murderer, murderer when

(14:05):
I certainly would not. You thinkMissus Mullins was murdered, Oh, I
think it's possible. I am goingto tell the facts that I know them
to the police, and I alsoam going to suggest an outipsey. That's
a lot of foolishness, mister Rogue, and I shall so inform the police.
You're willing to say that only aheart failure could have caused Missus mullins
death, mister Rogue, my diagnosisis heart failure. Good day. I

(14:37):
left and called Urban from the nearestdrug store and gave him a quick pitch
on the case. He owed andadd a little bit and finally decided he'd
talked with the commissioner about an eugipsy. I remembered my jen rummy date with
herb hide, so I told Urbanto call me home later that night.
I didn't get the call. WhenI got home, somebody was waiting for
me. I opened the door.Oh oh, and the world caved in.

(15:05):
I fell into a great void.I fell and fell and fell into
a blackness so heavy it felt likevelvet against my skin. I fell for
centering before the blast hit, andthe blackness was shattered with a zig zagging
red, blue and yellow lights. And I was picked up in a blast

(15:28):
so strong that it shot me upinto the heavens of the steam faster than
light. I opened my eyes andsaw a cloud age my home away from
home. I called you, Gord, you gor, you Gorn. I'm

(15:50):
I'm coming. Oh you go.Somebody hit me. You're making another statement.
That's not like you, Chief.Somebody beat your brains out. Oh
it's so good to be here oncloudy. It's so peaceful, And if

(16:11):
you'd shut up, it'd be soquiet. You won't wait tonight. I
thought maybe you were going to getby without coming up. Oh no,
no, who hit me? Youknow somebody did cheat me. Now you
got to get to work. Yougotta get back downstairs. Oh, don't
mention it. I'm staying up herea good long time. I'm kind of

(16:34):
sick. You won't feel any betteruntil you get downstairs, Rogy. Now
come on over the side with you. No, no, you go stop
hanging on cheeping. You've got thosebest You have to go back downstairs.
Well I'm int stick. Oh no, over you go open the side,

(16:56):
so long, Rogy. Okay, hey, rog For the love of Mike,

(17:18):
Rogie, Oh what do you want, Rogi? It's half high?
Remember Jean Rummy day? Oh ohit's you out high her? Fine?
Fine, And what's the matter,Rogie? What happened to you? Well?
Isn't that pretty obvious? Yeah?Yeah, sure is here. Take
a drink of this water. No, get me a get me a brandy

(17:42):
some over there in that cattle shut. Can you see now? Of course
I can see. What have Igot to look at? There's a note
here? Yeah? Oh, Imean have it, Rogie. Somebody wants
to get Rideo huhm of it.It just says get out of town.

(18:03):
Oh, it's not even signed alltont go, devil. Somebody was looking
for something. Ho do you supposeto wich? Roki? Who knows?
Who knows? There are plenty ofpeople who would like to see me move
out of town. Get Urban onthe phone. Will you tell him to
come over here? Sure? Sure, I'll get him right away. Every

(18:26):
nerve in my head was doing theHighland fling of the tune of the anvil
course was. I lay there andtried to figure out who it was that
slipped me that lead pipe sleeping pill. I was working on a half dozen
cases, and I didn't know whichone of them had enough dynamite even to
cause the man herb hide. CalledUrban. We sat there and played gen
Rome until Urban arrived. A partof my mind, which was still working,

(18:51):
was on my troubles, and Herbswas on the cards. I was
three seventy behind when the door openedand Urban walked in. Well what happened?
Oh? Oh, what our question? Somebody here among the head Yeah,
that's right. Kind of shook theplace down a little too, didn't
I? Roggie? Yeah, butyou know all the cases I'm mixed up

(19:11):
in at the moment where am Inear enough to pinch to cause somebody to
bend the plumbing over my head?Well we ordered that. Oudipsey and Angela
Mullins, As you asked us toa Mullins, she said, what did
you find u urban It was agood chip roguie. She'd been fed enough
poisoned to kill an elephant. PoisonHuh, that's right, poisoned with cyanine.

(19:37):

(20:44):
Now back to Dick Powell as privateinvestigator Richard Rogue in Rogue's gallery. For
some reason or other, I wasexpecting Urban to crack that news about the
death of Angela Mullins being murder. One of my famous hunches had whispered that
suspicion of my subconscious. As soonas I had heard of her death,

(21:07):
herb Hide had come over to playJen Rami and remained to put my head
back on after some character unknown andknocked it off. Was delighted to find
himself in the middle of a murderinvestigation. Urban gave me all the dope
and words of one syllable. Shewas poisoned with cyanine. That's all there
is to it. It was fedto her some way, and she died
in a matter of minutes of whatlooked like heart failure. How did you

(21:30):
know it wasn't a heart attack,Roguy? What made you so smart?
Well? Angela Mullins was up tosee me this afternoon. She was expecting
an attempt on her life. Yes, she wasn't disappointed. Washing Now I
only lost a client, rogie.Did you get your dough in advanceage?
Yes, and I'm going to keeprun on the job. Who do you
think did it? Urban? Thereare only two suspects in the case.
I've talked to both of them. That he's the nephew. That's right on
the h had plenty of motive.Yeah, what do you know about it?

(21:53):
Well, I know the old lady'swill was missing, and I know
they'll divide the estate between them. That the will isn't found. A couple
of million dollars is a great motivefor murder. Yeah, it's a nice
price. You managed to break itdown yet, Urban, No, they
both were they didn't have anything todo with it. No, that's a
fairly normal reaction. Yeah, shot, thank you can get an indictment that
they a's thinking it over. Oneof them did the job, all right.

(22:14):
They were the only two people aroundwhen the old lady died. And
this cionide takes less than a minuteto be effective. We got an open
and shut case against one of them. I think I'll take a run over
the Mullin's house. So see alittle Urban, mister rogue, I didn't

(22:36):
poison her. I want you toknow that you might as well face it.
Claire sanide. That's a poison thatyou found your aunt had died of.
It is one of the fastest actingpoisons. And on. There was
nobody in the house but you andwater at the time, was there No,
There was just the three of ushere. Paul and I were sitting
downstairs here, and Antie had justgone up to lie down for a while.
Next thing we knew she was dying. Well, let me look around
a little bit. Where did youaunt keep her important papers? Really important

(23:00):
once she kept in that strong boxunder her bed. The strong box at
the wheel was in. The policehave been over the house. It isn't
here. Did you have a desk? Yes, it's in her office to
study upstairs, studies upstairs, Butyou won't find anything there, really,
mister Rogue, I wish you'd go. The police are taking care of everything.
I want to take a look throughthat desk, Claire. Oh,
now, look, don't clad upand cry at me. I'm just trying

(23:21):
to help you. That's all.I didn't do it, Oh, mister
rogue. I wish there's something abouta beautiful girl's tears that turns my iron
will to sugar and melts my goodintention away like snow in the sunshine.
I comforted Claire for a while, all the time wondering whether or not I

(23:41):
was getting all that fine philosophy awayto a murderous and then I went to
work. I calmed that house likea head of hair, and I didn't
find the wheel, but I didfind some payders, a letter written on
distinctive stationary. A little buzz Iget in my sort of plexus told me
that I've solved that letter. Andthat interview with Angela Mullins in my office

(24:03):
added up to a pointing finger, which I followed right out of the house.
I was on the trail of themissing strong box. I called Urban,
gave him a hot tip on murder, then went to work. When
I arrived at my destination, noone was home, so I let myself
into a basement window. I wentto work like I only had five minutes
to live. I started in onthe top floor and hurricaned my way back

(24:29):
into the basement before I found whatI was looking for, the missing strong
box with the name Angela Mullins stenciledon its lid. I put it under
my arm and walked up the stairswith it. As I walked into the
kitchen, I saw him standing therewith a gun in his hand. Hello,

(24:49):
mister Rope. Oh hello, doctorHall. I see you've found it.
Yes, you're a little bit toosure yourself, Doctor, Yes,
I can see now that very well. Where did I slip up? Rogue?
I found a letter of MWe tomissus Mullins, a letter about a
fifty thousand dollar notes you was pressingyou for, yes or Doc? You'd

(25:10):
carelessly written that letter on the samestation there you'd use to write me a
note, the one you left inmy apartment telling me to leave Tom when
you batted my brains out. Remember, yes, how unfortunate you know.
Rogue killing is like lying one leadsto another. What God is he going
to do? You to kill me? You're the only person who even suspects
me of murdering Angela. I toreup the note, and incidentally, I

(25:32):
also tore up the wheel. There'sabsolutely nothing now to tie me into this
murder rogue except you. Look,Doc, Doc, you'll never get away
with this. No, no,no, you He'll never get me alive.
Well, I guess I'll have towell rogue. Guess we got here
too late. I'd say, yougot it just in time. There's your

(25:52):
murder. Yeah, we check thatinformation you gave us, rogue, And
what did you find? Doctor Hallwas the killer, very clever job.
He put enough to sign I hadto kill a horse into a little gelatine
capsule, and then he put thecapsule in the crown on Missus Mullins's tooth.
Oh brother, And when the capsulemelted, the snide hit the bloodstream.
Oh Urban, what would you dowithout me? Well that was the

(26:18):
end of that case. When thedoorbell rang, Dot got rattled and I
knocked him cold. Urban was veryproud of me. Doctor Hall admitted he'd
put the capsule full of cyanide andthe gold crown he'd made for Angelo Mullins.
She had been pressing him for paymentof a fifty thousand dollars note,
which he couldn't pay. He wasexecuted. The will was never found.

(26:38):
Claire and Paul got the old ladiestmoney, but they did very handsomely by
me for getting them off the hook. And I spent the money and pursued
better. Callahan. She was playinghard to get in those days, but
I wore down case of mouse catchingthe mouse trap. You know what I
mean. This is Dick Powell again, Ladies and gentlemen. I hope you

(28:25):
the solution to this case seemed alittle bit familiar to me because I saw
a nineteen ninety Colombo movie Uneasy Liesthe Crown, where the exact same method
of murder was used, But thatwas written by Stephen Bacco, who was

(28:45):
three years older than when this aired. So probably more case of great minds,
I think, alike, than anysort of actual borrowing. And this
is our last episode of Rogue's Gallerywith Dick Powell. I should say we're
