Työväen vappuperinne alkoi, kun 1.5.1886 ammattiliitot Yhdysvalloissa järjestivät laajan yleislakon kahdeksantuntisen työpäivän puolesta.
Ylioppilaiden vappu taas tuli Suomeen Ruotsista, jossa sitä juhlittiin perinteisesti syömällä ja juomalla runsaasti. Suomessa vapusta on ajan mittaan kehitelty ikioma juhla, jolla on ihan omat perinteensä ja rituaalinsa.
