مثّل خطف رزان زيتونة في التاسع من ديسمبر 2013 لحظة فارقة في مسار الثورة السورية. رزان، رغم شبابها، من المحاميات وناشطات حقوق الإنسان المكرّسات في الساحة السورية. عملت على الدفاع عن المُعتقلين السياسيين أمام محاكم النظام خلال بدايات عملها الحقوقي في العقد الأول من القرن، مع مساهمة فاعلة في المبادرات السياسية المُعارضة، وكتابات صحفية مُتابعة للشأن السوري ومُساهِمة في النقاش حوله. مع انطلاق الثورة السورية، لعبت رزان دوراً كبيراً في المشاركة في تأسيس لجان التنسيق المحلّية، ثم مركز توثيق الانتهاكات، إضافة لمساهمتها في العديد من النشاطات المدنية والحقوقية في سوريا عموماً، وفي غوطة دمشق خاصةَ.
