I do want to encourage you tocheck out our other podcast, and
I want to mention today's specifically publicdomain video theater at videotheater dot Great Detectives
dot net, which is the videocounterpart to this podcast. We're about to
bring you an audio episode of SherlockHolmes this weekend at videotheater dot Great Detectives
(01:17):
dot net. You can watch atelevision episode with Ronald Howard and later on
this month an episode of the USMarshall. We've got years of public domain
television shows and movies for you yourviewing pleasure, so check it out over
at videotheater dot Great Detectives dot net. Well, this episode of Sherlock Holmes.
(01:41):
I honestly don't know how long it'sbeen that I've not noticed this episode
out there. I think I mayhave noticed it on some either side,
and either it was mislabeled and itwas another Holmes pairing, or it was
so bad it was unless and unplayable. However, I was looking at a
(02:02):
site where I look for old timeradio and I saw this one, and
I said, I don't remember playingthat one. Let's see if that one
is actually genuine. And it was. And we are back to the Richard
Gordon era on Sherlock Holmes, whichis the beginning for regular weekly Sherlock's Homes
(02:25):
broadcast in the United States. Andthis will actually be the earliest episode of
Sherlock Holmes, replacing Death at Stonehenge. For that distinction, I will say
that the audio is not pristine, but it's definitely listenable, and considering we're
(02:46):
listening to something ninety years old,it's in I would say decent shape.
Also, after today's commentary, you'llwant to hang around as I will be
announcing a special giveaway. All right, So all that introduction out of the
way, we're going to get intoSherlock Home sponsored by Gee Washington Coffee.
(03:08):
The original air date May nineteenth, nineteen thirty two, and the title is
the final Problem, but not really, we'll get into that after the show.
Let's go ahead and take a lesson. Every week at this time,
(03:35):
the makers of Gee Washington's Coffee bringinga story from the Sherlock Holmes series of
mystery dramas. This week's adventure isan adaptation of Sarath the Counen Dog story
entitled The Final Problem. Remember asyou listened to it, the Gee Washington
stolves your daily coffee problem, justas Shirley as Home solves his famous mystery.
The end of the program, wehave a brief announcement about Doctor Washington
(03:57):
and his friend Sherlock Holmes. Pleaselisten for it, and that opening paragraph
has always leads us to Doctor watchthe comfortable, hospitable studies, where there's
amazing fire on the steaming cup ofGee Washington coffee. The wealthy news decision,
mister Bell made it that you cameup the steps. Thank you.
Back to watching. You know,a good cup of coffee always seems to
me to be the very essence ofhospitality. You name me a better coffee
(04:19):
than Gee Washington's, mister Bell,go ahead, name it Wana, But
seriously, Gee Washington's isn't just anotherbrand of coffee. It's really entirely different.
It not only has a perfect flavor, but it's the easiest coffee to
fix. That's the teaspoonful on thecup. Add hot water. Incidentally,
you'll never make more than you're goingto use, so that makes it economical
too, right, mister Bell,I suppose i'd begin my story, fine,
(04:42):
what's it to be the time?I'll about another tussle between homes and
profession Mariati excellent, always gives meplenty of first class shutters to eat.
That individual well tonight started deals withHolmes efforts to break up one of his
most uncustal schemes, racket you'd callit tod And did he succeed? Moved
Bell, putting cart before the hall. The affair began, and with the
(05:04):
theories of curious disappearances from Saint Antony'shospital. What is the fear? Doctor
wat people or fain they were copsesor perhaps they should say cadaver now,
But I go father that they shouldexplain that Saint Antonis is a medical school
and hospital combined. I myself tookmy court in anatomy and dissection inside its
(05:27):
venerable wall, the lionel great Lake. The head of the staff was an
old friend of mine. We cursedour internship in the same hospital. A
megalong story short. I received afrantic communication from Sir Lionel begging me to
persuade Holmes come straight to the hospital. I remember that night perfectly. A
particularly nasty peace super settled down overLondon, literally feeling our way. We
(05:54):
crept along the embankment till we sensed, rather than saw, the gray walls
of Saint Anthony's looming up ahead.M R harns als Haptos sound so moonful,
(06:40):
No, I said, you wouldinsist. I'm coming tonight, stop
and should be somewhere along here tumbledup at the doorstep lord is backing on
a bell. Here we the nightwatchman hadn't done Anthony's round. No,
(07:06):
no, someone's opening the door.Thank you the part. I can't see
the king that's near. Riding enoughLeo, I dought shell at Holmes along
way, man, I think Hen'scome in, Come in, my old
friend. I'm a great lay.There is no I don't know me say
grateful and relief. And this isthe sixth pest inside a month's home,
(07:29):
not the place in an uproar.Nurse just happens tell ex patient since to
something. I take it you're alludingto the cadavers which had been stolen recent
places to homes. You know howJoe's a hospital who did the reputation at
least to a better scandal or cheerup leo. Oh maybe it's just a
plank of one of the lads. You know what medical students are. That's
what I thought when we found thefirst party missing four weeks ago, and
now the tie had been stolen.Oh no, that's carring a joke too
(07:50):
fast. They tried to get awaywith another this evening, don't I just
happened to drop into the second roomand down to stubb it minute I opened
the door and who someone was inthe others He stipped out the sideway before
I could let the guest come andsee for yourself. Follow me the labor
traiser in this way, almost liummakes you a million nail. Remember when
(08:11):
he is to sneak of I didn'tsmelt behind that room closet, And I
wish the heaven life for the sile. How is faces like a big nothing
with suspicion? Why don't we beenable to keep it out of the papers.
Here we are one second to myun left the door, y no,
just me turn up the guests.Yeah yeah, yeah, quite impressive.
(08:35):
I see you have all the latestimprovement. Well that's the gentleman in
the corner. I take it hewas the odd because tonight the temptatives,
the home dust the cops spends dotake. It's a bit the worse for
wear. Otherwise just spended by ithere if we're most anxious not to lose
them, But they fairly. Isee that the no injections of the preserving
(08:56):
play almost the homes he died onits offer. The other stolen boddies,
they have been dauty preserved, bestpost. Well, no nation, they
were all stolen the pot being treatedpeculiar as rush. But if you're going
to be a bobby snatchy me takefresh one. You'll pardon me if I
rummage around at the trelinal. Ofcourse, of course I can carry out
(09:20):
my interrogations and my investigation at thesame time. My men needs parting.
Now in the male female the stolenboddies with a male of female who was
male all of them interest mean youthink to teach some women hating I wouldn't
go to what age? Do theysing? Corton? I don't know the
middling, I should say the markablygood love of buddies, though no mark
(09:43):
to pets. I mean, here'sthe lads and Caleb intimate that could be
Potter, take some girl on hisname, come wait to get washed up
on the way, and and youfound this, this specimen out here after
the thief was scared off. Ithink of the Cadallas. Aren't usually less
lying about, certainly not. They'rekept in their long steel. Kevin is
(10:03):
over there can't be too careful, you know, has to be rat sooner
building those of this and here? How many people have keys to that?
Cabinet's Lina who is doctor Lazy? You may know him better reputation, mister
Holmes, you will go Lazy. He's our head person and has charge of
the classes in the same thing.Yes, gosh, Brindians follow, I
say, Leo, how's it comingalong with his experiments in tants planting tissue?
(10:26):
Can't say Kenny's on most of hisexperiments in a little laboratory if he's
fixed up in his own learning andnever lifts anything out to his perfect one
of the cleverest persons in the county, mister Holmes, magnificent touch. I
could wish, however, that heis a better no good at teaching a
broh didn't that it's his temper whocan be devilish lassies and let him catch
one of the less as an instrumentbuilt out of place, for it's a
(10:48):
phobia with him as the homes aplace for everything and everything in its place.
Just young Potter says, it seemedto write before lazy season. So
this is the fluids the seat escapethey take it. Yes, and I
boosted on the inside to see that'sgad. I think I've seen all of
this to say, yes, yes, there's watch my calling over abundance of
clues too many to permit of anyintelligent deductions. Fourteen sets a fingerprints.
(11:13):
For instance, in the dust underthat operating table alone, I found shreds
of five different types of to backoff, he haven't paid missus pasters didn't
tell us again? Or she's thecleaning woman, mister home because doctor Lacy
is always complaining that she's inefficient.Well whose to whose finished your investigation?
Perhaps you're gonna advise us how weshould activist. And before I do that,
suppose it comes to an understanding.Would you be satisfied? Minute who
(11:35):
stop the fest or do you wantto know who is responsible for the missing
castles? Hanged out? Everything isat home? Who watches, how and
why? Mistery of any kind ismost immortalizing for a hospital. In that
case, we should do nothing further. We should do nothing further tonight where
the criminal wouldn't show up. Youmay take my word for the line.
The man who has been stealing yourkadabas is thoroughly acquainted with the workings of
(11:56):
this hospital. Look here, mister, but if you don't set the god
on this room, you may stealthis body too. It crely hops out.
He was making things too easy forhim. East you can put the
body back in the canal Watunately, that won't be possible. We can't open
it. The cabin has a springlock. The heef splended after him.
Yeah, yeah, what will easywhen you find this corps out here in
(12:16):
the morning. I don't think there'smuch dangerous that de linal who say,
I hope you will be more Well, there's one thing we can do for
you before we leave. They watn't. No. Well, we can make
up for missus cluts deficiencies, andif you'll get us a couple of old
rags and lineal, I think watchingthe night can go over us room another
time you gonna have them night.I'm gonna go o my dear watch that.
(12:39):
So it's most important that everything shouldbe neat and tidy. Oh that's
(13:13):
a nice bridge. Today women seemsto have dissapinted all the farms of what
the idea rising a chair out ofhis nice warm bed in the streets stills
deserted, depressing into the important thingwhen they're watching this in setting a trapper
is to collect your off catch beforeeveryone else does. No, Yes,
say anthem, who knows the lionelseems to be having a bit of an
(13:33):
argument with someone on the step. And now all the kids improving thing?
You see, I have a homenow these risks, but I'll be back
and when you are, but goingto clean next time? One you are
to be put in charge. Everyoneknows routine is what keeps an officer running.
What's the whole days? And youcome as you want and like no
(13:56):
your party? Why put off?So that that was missus class, the
tomigans and the old red hair islazy, come in, come in,
sorry to will give you such astormy welcome to that. I just caught
Missus class to clean up the laboratory. I suppose you want to take another
(14:20):
look at the place if it's convenient. This is, of course, of
course, follow me, I am. I wonder why the sudden burst of
energy. I'm missus Tutbard. Thedoctor Lacy maybe putting the screws on if
they get along. That Captain Douglastoo, But didn I just hear her
sailors was going home to fix himhis back. Yes, you see,
doctor Lacy is Missus class, butsurely is taking on each other's nerves as
(14:41):
they seem to him. It isa difficult understand, I admit. But
oh, I suppose Lacy hesitates tomove. He he's really very comfortable,
and he's built in a lot ofimprovements, cupboards and things of that stuff.
And I've told you how he isa place for everything, and everything
in its place. Missus Class, the first class cook and Lacy he's a
good feeder. Father less, Iwouldn't put the old girl too far and
(15:03):
be said of finding poisoning the coffeesome bright morning. Oh here's your lever
drivers g you gentlemen looks to seeingthat he did last mind, and I
should be able to judge better afterI've gone over the place of my microscope.
You've said yourself there were too meanprints and things. Now why do
you suppose I insisted on those ragslast morning? Who cost rubbing out those
(15:28):
marvelous my dear watching marvelous? Theold brain is actually functioning the earl in
the morning. And I let's seewhat they baggs. M oh here here,
here's the sleeping stock of a map. The day market has been standing
in the faunner. Yeah, yeah, yes, yes, you know the
imprint of her heavy in hands onthe end of the table. No,
the unusual world on the left hand, little finger like a question mark.
(15:50):
I don't have to missus custers singlepin. And she was just about to
stop just in the table when thatclock in the market on the table or
adago, Well, well listen nowthat seems to be the evalence against the
clat got her out as cookie asI could. Homes, homes, cops
gone, I wonder, how soonly a lot of sand. The corps
has been stolen, but wanted torespect and started to contradict him us the
(16:14):
homes, but the cops has beenput back in the cabinet. I mean,
yes, the metal faces slip myname. We should have missed with
sooner, seems Doctor Beacon's justin latelast night and insisted on putting the cababa
back in the cabinet. The knifeWatchman could save it to Sweden. So
I've told you about his media fororders. These are doubts his finger prints
saying here on the lock and aroundthis panel of the cabinet. Yes,
(16:37):
technical surgeon's hand long sensitive fingers werestrong blankly specially here's what's please recon holmes.
Wan't you going to look inside thecabinet? I spoke you might as
well, as the Lionel can provideus with the key. There is certainly
leasing its hits with the Knie watchinghere. Yes, Joe the cops he's
missing. Yes, I gathered itmight be not. Let's see as they
(16:59):
can find any thing in the Romancloud. Ah, here we are here,
we asked print to the third setof fingers. Yes, yes,
yes, he came in here earlierthan Lacy and those the bigger prints with
an honor. First this individual, then Lacy, and finally mister put all
nicely superposed one over the other, seeing whom this is facinating, almost as
exciting as the plant an experiment.Yea, yes, a third individual and
(17:19):
not any two sadachs ah heah. Here he somebled and had to put his
hand out. The prince clf. Here's a nice drink here on the wall.
He moved over to the yards alcohol. He removed the cover and he
puts it back again. Here here, he staggered out, you mean he
was in toxic? I unders canfind hundreds would come postling around around here
(17:41):
in the middle of the now what'slive in a recollection of your own green
sallar days? Did you ever speaka bit of the laboratory's alcohol to help
out a celebration that has suddenly goneright? And one of the students say,
if it's any idea which one isthe whole? I think I can
make a guess, but I don'tattend to them. The boy isn't mixed
up in this body snatching the courtwas here when he left his prints under
Lacey's on the dona. I think, yeah, what is it? I
(18:07):
just thought that'd depend on my instruments. Before that take good, I do
good, But before the committing getto look at me. I can definitely
go dot do comedian comedian where it'sjust leaving. Mister Hell, we hadn't
discovered any would be hair? Whatsin't hair? We know for sure that
either Lacy or Missus clutters and barsin this business, possibly both. Yes,
yes, I suggest we go topay the clutch manage a Visit would
(18:32):
be glad to take you over myself. What do you bag this morning?
A little bits of downs going on, so utter, Yes, they tell
me tomorrow juice is an excellent episodefor our alcohol. That's the This is
(19:10):
the curtains place over there, thehouse with a white shutter. Look at
that crowd of people standing cloking outin front. Looks like something happened.
Yes, yes, there's my favoritewatchdog of the long specking as well as
cousin Yards standing in the doorway lookingimportant. Hello, Hello, it's round
and what's up? And plenty womanfor the name of class has just murdered
(19:30):
her lodger, doctor Lacy, andI told you she'd do it some day.
Any unusual details, Oh, openand shut Kate. First she stabs
him with the kitchen knight. Thenshe throws the body, closing the arm
into a vat of magic gases. This log was keeping an inverting room.
Means any objections if I come inand take on the ground, all right,
But I tell you this case isopen and shut. But come in,
(19:51):
Come in. Boys in first room, head of the stairs. It's
not nice, but if you wantto look ahead, I gotta stay here.
Vilo chemical smells plus something else that'llbe the acid. Look ali up
stairs the dock. You hear thatnoise, that's the acid that working on
(20:17):
the bunny. Of course smell itis acid dissolving in the room. No
money, jenisons Jackers, the money, the stride taking here to guard the
body? Here, oh Jackings, jenckus, I think it might have another
window. Get a draft to here. Now, wat if you will bring
(20:37):
me that jug labeled olive oil,you may as well stop the action of
this acid. It's a port wagonsthe tub m this is Stride said the
remains. I'm not exactly attractive.I wonder the lionel if you could bring
yourself to to identify Doctor l saidcertain it was the whole. I have
a medical man. I'm quite usedto it. Yeah, he's rather hud
(21:02):
taste, almost an entirely hidden theway with the dark hair, with the
list of it, the pools andthat ring. He never could get it
off his little fingers. Yes,yes, I think all this is Lucy's
jack. How was he killed?Hitching knife on the table? There,
missus clud's fingerprints plainer's day, solestribesman persuaded the valuable fingerprints as good There
(21:23):
the world does progress? Yes,yes, yes, these are missus quest
prints? All right? Why Ididn't kill him? He was dead when
I came in. He would getit and get gone. Let strike us
a moment. I'd like to askthis this maybe a few questions he did
(21:44):
part him? Is it actually hadto call in the police? Of iderne?
Oh, you're calling the police leaningat the window screaming blood murder?
Any idea? Who could have killedthe dart of lay missus? I guess
be no wal knife on accoutom hissister's having the baby. I would safing
Larkly to the hospital. She hasto check up another. Oh that's straight
enough, but she's been home atleast twenty minutes before you call the police.
(22:04):
Times will murder half a dozen dogs? Who you know, astride.
It's just possible that missus cuts mayberight, you see it to take several
hours for assouve the crops as faras this what all her fingerprints are on
the knife? That's enough for meand no one else, and watches me
all that night. I suppose youlook at it again, watching blazing good.
(22:26):
I noticed the order of the Fingerprince, for instance, Come and for
a finger near the blade end ofthe handle. Now, I suppose suppose
you take this pocket knife of mineand pretend to stab me with it.
Obviously just a lot of it,all right, man, you see not
it's the way you hold it.Come against the outer end, little finger
next to blade. In other words, the flip for using a knife for
(22:47):
kitchen work and for stabbing on exactlyto this, Doctor Lacy was not stabbed
with this knife at all. Itwas put here by someone to incriminate Missus
clutch Heart, But she didn't doit. Who did, someone who wanted
to get rid of us? Youany idea who that could have been?
Missus quad? I haven't He onlyput from mean enough to do a thing
like this is best fun of agland legings, And he did. Now
the Lord rest his soul. Ohdeary me, it's not bed enough having
(23:11):
a murdering in me own house andthen losing the best largest but the police
having gold h is in me.I'm topping at all that is not our
live is another tenant of these rooms. Oh that is so much profit,
my dear missus sars compared to thereal danger you're ends the murderer. He's
still at list and he isn't exactlyfun of you. I think I'll just
drup him from time to time tomake sure you haven't been murdered in your
(23:33):
bed. Realisting missus patters in dangerobviously, wasn't that well than she entered
(24:03):
the bell. Anything happening? Oh? Good as and and gentlemen wes to
step inside. I had come tothe door sting them, but I was
up to a screening our doctor ladWould you believe it? I've got a
ten? Does he know its historyyesterday? Does believe he's not suffer septunate?
What do you like? Well,he's a German professor or something,
(24:25):
come here to carry on some experimentwith doctor Lacey. Doctor Ladie told me
he was suspecting him only last week, and so when he come out to
him for lady this morning, andI told him what he happened right away
after doctor la did jokes an instrumentsmust Elia. When I said yea,
he said he'd moved brighting and keerryOn relieved it off. Would you mind
coming up stair as well? Ifinished my work either way, missus,
and I was looking then she wasblonde with a beard. He limps.
(24:48):
Any who I does be a relief. I tell you after that, lady,
he was getting queerer and queer. And we went out at all hours
of the night. I crea wason the bridge of killing the belief to
keep an eye on him. Morethan once. We were just to stack
on the sofa. Now what name, well, what I can see out
of the window, I should saythat your new lodger has arrived. Thanks
to that. Excuse me A bitbetter, big, guys, than the
(25:12):
moment, watching the moment, pentyof time, professor, you know,
good night. Sorry, I hadcome on this way and then find a
friend dead. Here's what you callItalia and spect the fort man to underbend
(25:33):
since touch and make it comfortable anduntest. You had better lax than doctor
him. Come come coman, what'llbe going? She professor? We were
the the detectives on this case.Nothing I'm gonna say nothing. All these
are my notes on the case.I'm really rather ashamed of them. Would
you mind if I if I burnedthem here on your fireplayer or not at
(25:55):
all? Thank you? Thank you. Oh, I don't think that I
haven't met one moment. I'll getto show me here in the garden these
team na here you are a niceleaving box. Thank you, doctor Lay
saying I thought you would know whereto find him, a place for everything
and everything in the place. Yes, I was sure you would be drawn
back to these rooms here. You'llthink I am doctor Lacy. He is
(26:17):
dead. Must No, that wasn'tdoctor Lacey in that type of acids.
It was one of the buddies hehad stolen from Saint Anthony's. Had a
rather curious confirmation of the bones ofthe right foot. I've seen it the
night before, so of course Irecognized it, Yo, miss fortune,
Doctor Lathay. These footschair rubbish andyou see it came to my attention a
long ago all the professor Mayas hewas getting in touch with quite a number
(26:37):
of heavily insured businessmen. One afteranother, these men died, but by
and by the insurance companies became suspicious. I was told to investigate. I
discovered it on several occasions, Professormanyas he had called on Doctor lay said
doctor Lacey, who was experimenting withspacial surgery, Doctor Lacey, who had
access to any number of copses fromSaint Anthony's. And when the time I
began to suspect that doctor Lacey wasworking on these dead bodies and transforming them
(27:03):
so they would look like the gentlemanwho wished to collect their insourldance. The
person my eyes made a handsome prophet, I believe. Unfortunately, though I
couldn't prove my story. Actually itis crazy. No, I wouldn't believe
it. I think I could dothis when you're in prison. The whole
team will follow the ground I havenot stocked. At least you have no
proof there you are wrong. Sothis little match box which you just handed
(27:26):
me contains all the proof that Ineed. On it is a set of
fingerprints which is identical with some onthe cabinet door in the laboratorious and Anthony's,
and those fingerprints are known to beDoctor l said. It's elemental,
my dear element that's the end ofthe stars. Well, doctor Watson isn't
(28:00):
and ever confessed he did better thanthat. He offered a sharp Mariarcia.
When they came to take down histestimony, he was found dead on his
prison corps. Obviously more the Mariarci'swork. There's one thing I don't understand.
Why didn't he take the same wayout as a businessman. Surely he
could have doctored some corps up toit looked like himself. He could happens
above, But that's where human naturecomes in. He hated Missus Clupps,
(28:21):
so he wanted to implicate her.It was his big mistake. Well,
that's certainly is a fascinating story.Do want now how to get back to
something where there are never any mistakes? I know if you're hinting at now
another cup of Gee Washington coffee,Yes, indeed I do. And if
you ever started to consider how muchthe word economy has come to mean to
Americans during the last couple of years. Mean more than me too, I
(28:42):
have to say, and a lotof things I never thought about before.
How do you do it? Ito watch? Did it mean giving up
all the good things in life andusing cheaper quality all? Mister girl?
I still keep to the good thingsthat I'm a little more careful how I
use them, more satisfaction and beinga little careful with good things, you
know, than ing up with poorquality. Oh, by the way,
(29:03):
what is it, doctor? You'rechuckling over something and it isn't be better
to tell what it is. Well, a lot of people have been taking
a lesson from shellot Home, misterBell. They've they've been drawing deduction about
what about my book and shell atHome stories, mister Bell. They've been
observant enough to notice the little numberone on the back of the volume,
and they want to know if they'rethey're going to be other books? There's
(29:26):
more stories in the later on Great, I'm not very deservingt Doug Wasason.
I never noticed that little one,and are there going to be more stories?
I can't over sure, mister Bell. I've been talking you though,
mister Washington. Just in case thatare. I want everybody to get volume
one right away so they want theleft and the first edition runs out and
be unable to make up their completeset. That's right too. We'll have
(29:47):
to warn them about that, especiallywithout economy. We were talking about it
worth while getting a really good bookfor nothing? What about Gee? Washington.
Is that a comy, of course, it's you know at home story
about the rich old mustard manufacturer.Answer, I know, doctor Watson,
against is that I do. Onestory applies to saving money on coffee too.
It seems a smart young man whoToby was smart anyway, Unster mustard
(30:11):
king, if he really made allhis money out of a little bit of
mustard people use on their foods,And what did he says? Did know
he made most of it out ofthe mustard people leave on their place,
not just the way it is acoffee or did my cofton? You mean?
The real experience is not what youdrink, but what you wait exactly.
And that's where g. Washington saved. There's no way you let me
(30:32):
make what you want and that youcan have all you want. That sounds
like economy, all right, ladiesand gentlemen, Doctor Watson, I want
you to test Gee Washington economy.Get a four uns can right away.
Don't be afraid of the size ofthe can or the price. G Washington
is economical because it ends wait, that's a special inducement. Why doctor Watson
will give you one of his booksand seven Sherlock home story that spend your
(30:52):

It's the good doctor, persuade misterWashington deuitions bargum two. That out.
What about next week's story? Nextweek, I'm better tell you the story
of a man twenty years older thanhis bride and how death came to Rose
Hills. Now, in answer thenumerous requests, we want to announce if
the Sherlock Holmes program has been onthe air for three years. The part
(31:37):
of Sherlock Holmes is played by RichardGordon, that of Doctor Watson by Lee
Lovell. Neither mister Gordon or misterLovell played the part of a detective and
his doctor friend in any other programWelcome Back. I actually really enjoyed this
(32:39):
episode. It does a great jobcapturing the kind of spirit and style that
makes Home so appealing. In thisepisode, we hear him doing things that
is compatriots don't understand, and wethe audience don't understand at first, because
(33:00):
he's got this so very different viewof the world and of the case.
His mind is moving in different directions, and I totally love how they managed
to capture this. Holmes is justso much fun in this episode. And
I think that some listeners commented onthe fact that Richard Gordon's performance was quite
(33:23):
a bit different than so many ofthe later Holmes radio stories, and I
think that's because Gordon, if he'sinfluenced by anything, and I think the
same can be said for Lewis Hector, who would follow him in the Sherlock
Holmes role. He was influenced byWilliam Gillette's performance and the stage plays in
(33:50):
the way that those were performed.Basil Rathbone came along and really just decided
to do his own thing, totake the role and to offer his own
interpretation and make it his own,and then most of the Holmes actors until
at least Ben Right just essentially decidedto go ahead and try and imitate Basil
(34:14):
Rathbone, much to Rathbone's annoyance. But that's another story. Speaking of another
story, those who have read throughthe Sherlock Holmes stories will be scratching their
heads at the idea that this isan adaptation of the Final Problem. I
(34:35):
talked about this, you know,a decade ago. If you remember before,
we were at episode one thousand, like episode zero nine something when they
did the Final Problem in the JohnGielgood Ralph Richardson series, and that series
really tried to be extremely faithful tothe source material. A problem with the
(35:00):
Final Problem is that it is soexposition based. There's not a whole lot
of action or character interaction. Itwas something that Doyle wrote as a way
to escape writing Sherlock Holmes stories, not is something that he expected to be
(35:22):
dramatized in some full detail. Soit's very tough to dramatize. And so
I think many of the New Adventureswriters, and particularly the writer of this
story decided, you know, let'sjust go ahead and we're introduced to Professor
Moriarty in the Final Problem, butwe don't actually see Holmes busting up Moriarty's
(35:50):
operations and how fiendish those operations were. So let's go ahead and tell a
story of Holmes doing that now.Of course, in terms of the canon,
that presents some problems in that inthe Final Problem, when Holmes references
Moriarty to Watson, that was thefirst time that Watson had heard of him.
(36:14):
But I think that Doyle kind ofcreated some of that within the canons.
So I guess we can forgive thewriter of this episode the disclaimer at
the end about the stars of theprogram not appearing in any other program as
(36:34):
a crime solving detective and his doctorfriend was intriguing, and I did a
little bit of research, and Ihave no idea what exactly it was about,
though I can kind of speculate. It was nineteen thirty two, which
was still very much a Wild Westera for American radio. The great radio
(36:58):
networks were still just getting established. There was a lot of chaos in the
radio medium and some shady operators. It's not inconceivable that with the success of
the Sherlock Holmes program, which byaccording to this had been on the air
for three years that someone decided, you know, we have a couple of
(37:22):
actors who sound really similar to theHolmes and Watson characters. Let's go ahead
and put our own detective series onthe air and see if we can cash
in on it. And then someonerides into g Washington Coffee and notifies them
of this, and you get thatsort of announcement at the end of the
(37:43):
program. Might also get some lawyersinvolved as well, particularly since the character
of Sherlock Holmes and nineteen thirty twowas very much under copyright. But a
last I could find no details asto what sort of drama went on,
if any, on this worth notinghere. Joseph Bell, who hosts this
(38:06):
program, would be the host ofseveral Sherlock Holmes programs. In fact,
after Petrie Wine left a sponsor ofSherlock Holmes along with Basil Rathbone leaving,
he served as the host during them Conway Najo Bruce era nineteen forty six
(38:29):
and forty seven for Criminal Hairconick. The book Premium really caught my interests.
It was such an interesting promotion asGee Washington Coffee issued its own special edition
of Sherlock Holmes stories, seven storiesselected from the Holmes Cannon, and I
(38:51):
thought it would be interesting to havea copy of it. It's a great
piece of radio history from the veryfirst long running Sherlock Holmes series, and
I thought it would be even morefun to give listeners to the podcast a
chance to own their own copy.So I bought a copy of the book
(39:15):
off of eBay, and it isgoing to be a prize in the first
ever giveaway I've done on The GreatDetectives of Old Time Radio. You can
go to giveaway dot Great Detectives dotnet and enter to win this book,
along with four other prizes. Solet me go ahead and I will talk
(39:37):
about the book itself. The bookcontains seven Sherlock Holmes stories. On the
title page, it's listed as theG. Washington Audition, and it includes
the Adventure of the Illustrious Client,The Adventure of the Blanche Soldier, The
Adventure of the masurin Stone, TheAdventure of the Three Gables, The Adventure
(40:01):
of the Creeping Man, The Adventureof the Sussex Vampire, and the Adventure
of the Veiled Ladger. So mostof these are some of the later home
stories, but that's not all. While doing some research, I found out
that Gee Washington Coffee had issued anearlier high end book, a copy of
(40:24):
The Hound of the Baskervilles. Thisone is also labeled as the Gee Washington
Edition, was printed in nineteen thirtyand it features a picture of the star
Richard Gordon in addition to the textof the novel. I think I would
(40:44):
classify the condition of each of thesebooks as in good condition. They are
far from men. There are thingsalong the cover and and somewhere particularly on
the bonds of the books. They'reboth hardcover. They're not worth a fortune
or anything, but they're fun thingsto have. A nice piece of radio
(41:06):
history from the first American Sherlock Holmesseries Over Radio. The first prize is
choice of the two books. Thesecond prize is whatever the first place winner
didn't choose. Our third prize isthe new Great Detectives of Old Time Radio

But join us back here tomorrow fordangerous assignment. Where what do you see
there, miss you meet June.Just the black sedan, man in the
(43:27):
back seat, driver in front. The man in the back seat was the
diplomat who was assassinated shortly afterward. Now look more closely at the diver.
Hey, it's Captain Rock, capTinak. You may turn the lights back
on. Now you think Captain Rockkilled that diplomat? No, but we
(43:51):
think he was in on the planin some way. At a certain point
in the trip, instead of turningto the left as he was supposed to
do, he suddenly turned to theright into a blind alley. That is
where they're shooting to place. Isee. Well, then if Roc wasn't
on the plan, that means heknew who killed that diplomat. That is
precisely Department schell. We believe thatinterest hostile to that treaty deliberately assassinated that
(44:14):
blot to block the treaty. Yourcommissioner also believes that if they can be
exposed for what they are and linkedto the killing, then the treaty has
a chance of going through after all. Yeah, well, what happened to
Captain Rock. After the shooting, inter polling place has supplied us with that
information. I have it right here. Rock went into hiding. He was
arrested on a minor charge at Istanbultwo months ago and imprisoned there. He
(44:37):
probably figured that that Instabul jail wasa good hiding place. Undoubtedly. I
hope you'll be with us then.In the meantime, do send your comments
