Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome to simple man sermons, the preachings of
a simple man called by God to share the good
news of Jesus Christ. Come to me, all you who
labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for
(00:22):
I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will
find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy
and my burden is light. Rest is a good thing.
We are commanded to rest on the Sabbath. You ever
(00:43):
think of what a blessing that is that God will
command us to rest. It's the longest of the Ten
commandments by far, telling us to remember to rest. Rest
is a good and holy thing. I would submit you
can't have true rest apart from God. One of the
(01:07):
things you might notice when you look around in this
world is a lack of rest. And I don't mean
physical rest. A lot of people today are more physically
let's say, lethargic than they've ever been. That's not the
rest we're talking about now. The physical rest is part
(01:28):
of it, but at our core we are spiritual beings.
You can be laying in a completely quiet room, on
the softest of beds, the perfect temperature, quiet laying there
and your soul. Your spirit could be disquieted, not resting.
(01:53):
You could your brain, your mind, your soul could be
in a frenzy of activity. You could be in fear,
you could be anxious, you could be worried in your
spirit and your soul, and you're not resting. But there
remains a true rest for the people of God. So
(02:18):
if you are labored, heavy laden, especially in the spirit
and the soul, the most important, go to Christ. Go
to God to get rest. You see, the world has
all these other places. They go for this kind of
(02:39):
They seek this kind of peace and rest and contentment.
But it's all false. It all falls short of the
true rest that one can have in God. A big
lie of society and culture. Oh, if I just had
more money, I'd be happier, I'd be content if I
(03:02):
just had more money, if I just got a dollar
an hour raise, I would be so much more content
in life. But that's not true. As soon as they
get a dollar an hour raise, don't want another dollar
an hour raise. Assuming they actually did have enough to
have their base needs met with the money they were making. Now,
(03:22):
there's nothing wrong with getting a raise, but that's not
where your peace and contentment is going to come from.
A big lie in society and culture today is well,
if I just got more attention from the opposite sex,
I would be so much happier, so much more content
One principle that was kind of an epiphany in my life.
(03:43):
You can't give what you don't have. You can't give
what you don't have. And if you're not at peace,
if you're not content with yourself, with your life, with
your relationship with God, at rest, content, happy, joyful, you
can't bring that into a relationship because you don't have it.
You can't give what you don't have. Now, again, this
(04:09):
is a good thing, being an a good opposite sex,
spiritual at the base relationship. God created man. And the
first thing I'm aware of in the Bible he said
is not good, is not good for man to be alone.
But just a mere attention from the opposite sex is
(04:30):
not going to give you any contentment. It may, if
I'm being honest, view a fleeting pleasure, but then when
it's gone, oftentimes be lonelier and less at peace than
you were to begin with. Now, being in a deep, spiritual,
committed relationship with your wife getting married, not living with somebody,
(04:51):
not cohabitating, not you know or Facebook official. No, I'm
talking about an actual marriage between a man and a world,
and where you're dedicated to making it work and you
are committed to that relationship. That is a good and
beautiful thing. Marriage was made by God, not Man. That's
a beautiful thing. But even that is not where your
(05:14):
true peace and contentment comes from. If you don't have
peace and contentment, A marriage partner is good and a
beautiful thing, and they can hopefully help you be better.
But your wholeness, your contentment, your identity, is in Christ.
And if you look to any partner a matter how
(05:34):
good they are, to fix all your problems and make
you complete in life, to fulfill some deep seated spiritual gap,
that's not going to work out because that whole, that gap,
that thing that you're seeking, can only be filled in God,
in Christ. Go to Jesus and he will give you rest. Ladies,
(06:01):
I'm not a lady, obviously you can tell from my voice.
So I'm not a lady, So I'm gonna be careful
what I speak to. But I see this in culture
so rampantly, so infectious and pervasive that women just crave
this sexual attention from seemingly everywhere. So much of what
(06:23):
they do and devote themselves to is to get this attention.
And the beauty of a woman is a powerful thing.
But if you are only paying attention to that, no
matter how beautiful you are, and a man, tons of
men give you attention for just your beauty, that's not
a fulfilling relationship. That's not going to give you rest
(06:46):
and peace and contentment and life. That's not going to
give you any kind of fulfillment. Tangentially to that. We
see people today with all this social media stuff, and
you know, if I just had more likes, more clicks,
more attention, I would be so much happier, so much more.
That would really bring meaning to my life. But it
(07:08):
wouldn't if you are not at peace in your own soul,
with yourself, with your life. If a bunch of people
give you attention, there's going to be somebody who's not
content with a bunch of attention. It's not going to
fulfill you. Praise from man, even if it's good for
(07:31):
a good thing, it's not going to fulfill you. One
day you'll be dead and they all will be too.
As far as our earthly bodies on this earth, and
all the social media platforms will be gone. And deep
down you know that. So that's not where you're going
to get your rest. None of those things and many
(07:53):
others that we could probably ramble on about, are not
what's going to give you rest. You know what's going
to give you rest, Christ, a restored relationship with your
creator and your Savior. Come to me, all you who
labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
(08:16):
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for
I meek and lowly in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and
my burden is light. A true rest now, and this
is more important than the physical. There will be times
where you can be physically tired. You can be in
(08:37):
an environment that maybe is not the most conducive to
physical rest, but still be at rest and at peace.
There will be times in life where you get lack
of sleep, where you are jet lagged, or you just
had a child, or any number of reasons. But your
inner self, your true self, your spirit, your soul can
still be at peace. You could have all kinds of
(09:01):
attention from the opposite sex and not be satisfied. Or
you could have a based relationship in God, a firm foundation,
in a deep spiritual relationship with your husband or wife
and be completely content without a social media platform with
a bunch of likes, without a bunch of that stuff.
(09:25):
Because humans have been that way for the vast majority
of our existence. So you know that all those other
things aren't going to make you happy. Long before there
was paper money, fiat currency, you know, giant mansions and
(09:46):
shiny rims on cars, people were happy and content and
relationship with God. That other stuff doesn't change that. So
while the rest of the world is scurrying around like
a and a race looking for the thing that's going
to make them happy and at peace and RESTful and content,
(10:08):
it's not far from any of us the God who
made the heavens and the earth to see and all
that is in them. That's where you find your contentment,
and the one who saved you from everything, in Christ.
There is a rest for us. Like to read for
you a bit from the book of Hebrews. For He
(10:34):
has spoken in a certain place on the seventh day
in this way, and God rested on the seventh day
from all his works, and again in this place they
shall not enter my rest, since therefore it remains that
some must enter it, and those whom it was first
(10:54):
preached did not enter because of disobedience. Again, he designates
a certain day, saying in David to day after such
a long time, as it has been said today, if
you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, For
(11:15):
if Joshua had given them rest, then he would not
afterwards have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a
rest for the people of God, for he who has
entered his rest has himself also ceased from his works,
(11:36):
as God did from his. Let us therefore be diligent
to enter that rest, least anyone fall according to the
same example of disobedience. For the Word of God is
living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword,
piercing even the division of soul and spirit, and the
(11:57):
joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts
and intents of the heart. And there is no creature
hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and
open to the eyes of Him, to whom we must
give a count. I'm gonna read part of that again.
(12:22):
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.
For he who has entered his rest has himself also
ceased from his works, as God did from his. Let
us therefore be diligent to enter that rest. Thanks for listening,
(12:44):
and have a blessed day.
