The pressure to be smaller, toned, ripped or jacked. The shame around what you see in the mirror, especially if it doesn’t match what you see idolized on social media, magazines and billboards. The fatigue from trying diet after diet after, not getting the results you want. This is Diet Culture, and it’s messing with people’s happiness, sense of self worth, and in some cases, their health. Today I talk about what is is, how it shows up, and how you can start to opt out.

Small Steps in the Show:

  • Notice the people/messages/images that are in all of the health and fitness media.
  • Notice your own language and preferences.
  • Notice how you’re talking to yourself.
  • Ask yourself if what you’re saying/watching/learning contributes to staying in the diet culture norms.
  • Start opting out: unsubscribe, unfollow, stop watching media that perpetuate these ideas
  • Check in with your values around health and fitness, create them if you haven’t.
  • Notice when diet culture thoughts pop into your head, label it and ask some questions.
  • Start to create or think on ways to create your eating and movement practices that are in line with your values and work with/surround yourself with people that share similar values.
  • Consider sharing and talking about this with other people.
