Hello once again everybody, and welcomeback to Soccers over Time, your weekly
look inside the San Diego Sockers andthe Major Arena Soccer League alongside Tony Sanchez,
Craig Elston here with you. It'ssuch a pleasure to be back with
you in the West, per Familiaday Little Soccers they San Diego, Tony,

(00:59):
how you been my friend? Hey, Tony, Hi, and you're
going to hear you yeah, now, yeah, I mean literally, all
all that was missed is that itwas a rainy day here in San Diego.
Some equipment might have gotten a little, you know, damp, but
we rock on and thank you foreverybody who joined us. Hope everybody stayed

(01:19):
safe and man, it was interestingout there. But you know what,
I'm happy to be back with theFamilia that'll soccers. As you said,
Greg, oh my goodness. Sogenerally everything okay at Casta DAYTONI Yeah,
yeah, you know, we're rightnext to the Tijuana River valley and yeah,
you know, interesting interesting days here, but everything is a okay.

(01:41):
Puppies are dry, everybody's fine, outstanding, outstanding. Yeah, it's been
a wild seventy two hours in SanDiego. It's been raining everything but goals,
and we'll be talking about it all. As mentioned. Special guests this
week, the Gabriel Costa. Hechecks in to talk about his adjustment to
San Diego, playing the Strikers forthe first time and learning the ropes of

(02:05):
what it takes to do an interstateback to back. They're starting to figure
that out. They're going to haveto figure it out again this weekend.
Speaking of which, here comes anothertough back to back. That's why today's
show is titled Here we Go Again, Season six, Episode twelve, third
time in twelve weeks that we aregoing into an interstate back to back.
We'll preview both matches here in SanDiego against Saint Louis and on the road

(02:29):
at Tacoma. Then, in thesegment that everybody in the league tunes into
here MASL News will tell you howtough it is to win in Mexico.
Kansas City found out the hard way. Monterey the only team who says no
problem winning in Mexico. They beatChihuahua again and continue to run the show
all the latest at MAASL News. All ahead on the show of record in

(03:12):
listeners as well well, Tony,a weekend without Soccer's wasn't a weekend without
soccer There was plenty happening in theMASL, But for San Diego, I
think an important chance to kind ofcool the Jets a little bit. After
three games in five days, fourin seven if you count that futsal exhibition,
which the players who played in itcertainly would count, it was a

(03:37):
good thing. The last two morningsyou talked about the rain. The last
two mornings training was moved to LaMesa Indoor thanks to Bradley Field Bradley Park
just being a puddle, and soI actually got to go to a little
bit of training the last two daysbefore Annie and Elston got to check in
for at least twenty thirty minutes downat La Mesa Indoor and good to see

(04:00):
a lot of the players who wehave been noticing their absence on the floor
at least out there for training today. Yeah, it's a really good reset
for the team, right. Youknow, they had a couple of instances
where the legs were on their lastyou know, I don't even know electronic
energy, not a science guy.Either way, those legs were tired and

(04:24):
definitely needed that rest only to kickback up because again, as you're saying,
there's going to be more interstate gruelingtravel coming up for the soccers and
they're going to have to be wiseabout how they manage those legs coming into
this stretch because things are getting spicyin the West, especially with Chihuahuan who
how are they're managing to play youknow, flash the way that they have

(04:46):
and interesting times here. Yeah, the landscape of the MASL is shifting,
There's no question about it. It'sshifting to the south, where I think
the further south you go, thecloser you are to championship contention. And
luckily we're very close to the borderTexas Outlaws a little bit further north of

(05:08):
the border and everyone. The furthernorth you go, it just seems like
the lesser chance you have right now. Of course, anything can change in
the ma ASL. Injuries change thingsvisa issues change things. Many things change
over time. But right now,we know we did that tier list last
week and I I mean, Idon't think I have one thing to regret

(05:30):
based on that tier list. Thatwas some good stuff, Craig. Honestly,
the reasoning behind that, I thinkthat that's what I like about you
know, our less You're a less, Craig, because it has the whys.
It's not necessarily an arbitrary Well hereyou go and this team hasn't played
in a week, so we'll considerthem, you know, not losing or
however that gets dictated. But eitherway, you know, that's why.

(05:51):
That's why people tune in right tofind that out the show of record.
That's why every time when I lookat the Twitch numbers, it always goes
old here and then up here andthem asl news up here to the highest.
That's when you start to see allthe folks from the league in the
chat as well. So don't worry. That's still coming up. But first

(06:14):
we do have a game to review. It happened a day after our last
show, so it's six days old, not fresh in everyone's mind, but
it's a goal that's always going tobe worth revisiting. As we head up
the highway for the Soccers and theEmpire strikers, you'll hear Gabriel Coasta talk
about this momentarily first shift, firstshot, first goal in his old home

(06:35):
with his new team. Sort ofa subdued celebration for Gabriel Coasta, but
he was actually battling a sore hamstringTony after a weekend that included a back
to back and all of the activity. He was just kind of happy to
get his laces through that one.Yeah. No, it's a good start
from him, especially when we weretalking about they need to score in the

(06:56):
first quarter and they got it done. Gabrio ghost I go ahead, get
it in there, and getting earlyin on the action against his old team.
From that point, a goaltenders dueldeveloped for at least a quarter or
so, a lot of good saveson both sides. Brandon Gomez for Empire
and of course our good friend BorisParto for the Soccers. There's one of
them right there, denying Harold Hanson. Flurry of quality saves here at one

(07:21):
nothing for Boris Parto to keep thematch exactly where it was. Combo saves
indeed, as Empire tries to putthe pressure on. That was some not
so great defending by San Diego rightthere, and Parto cleans it up.
Miatovic is a good shot. Partocleans it up, seeing a consistent refrain
here. Now it's Gomez's turn fora lovely kick save to keep things at

(07:45):
one one. Here's a golden opportunity. Gomez comes all the way out and
denies Ruggles, this time a littlebit of a miss, and at this
point in the match one nothing. It's Parto's turn again. He gets to
go post to post. Cardin ishelping. You're starting to get that feeling,
aren't you, Tony, because itjust hasn't been much offense for the
Sokers of late, and this farinto the match there wasn't either. Yeah,

(08:09):
It's kind of like that vehicle thatyou have that you can need to
let it warm up once the oilstarts flowing, once things starts warming up.
If they're not warming up by acertain point, you start thinking,
well, can this potentially be anotherstruggling game? But you know, at
the end of the day, Strikersdid have a lot of opportunities on themselves,
and I think it's just those detailsand Minutia. That needs a bit

(08:30):
fixed because the elite teams are notgoing to be as let's say generous as
strikers are in those positions. Here, just bad luck for Boris Poto.
He has no eyes on Miatovitch tryingto clear the ball winds up drilling Miatovich
in the leg. It's a penaltykick, not just a penalty and it's
against X for that matter, SoMiatovich drills the PK for one one.

(08:56):
The strikers didn't score a regular goalin this match, didn't score a single
goal in the run of play.It was either six attackers or that penalty
kick for how Empire got their goals. But now one to one. Some
back and forth action here that windsup leading to San Diego taking the lead,
starting off with another great save byParto and then Hanson almost in sort

(09:18):
of a harbinger of things to come, attempting the bike back to the other
side, Morgan putting it into themiddle. Salazar gets an inadvertent touch,
but it drops to Wan Gonzalez whodrills it for two to one and least
the Sockers have the lead going intothe locker room to him. Yeah,
and that was essentially what you wantedwhen you go into the locker room.

(09:39):
Even though it's a two to onelead, nobody's happy with it going into
it. You need that booz ofconfidence to make sure that it's not just
on Boris parto at this point gettingthe Sockers out of trouble and you know,
having a fantastic performance, but againyou need that offense to really start
coming in half time and an immediatechange for the San Diego soccer our GM

(10:01):
Sean Bowers told me some real halftimediscussions were had at Toyota Arena, some
adjustments were made, and instead ofnear goals, it became goals for San
Diego. In fact, overall aflurry of seven consecutive goals for the soccers
in this match. Here they come, one after another, this one unlucky
for Brandon Gomez and a well placedshot from outside by Aescoto that would normally

(10:26):
be saved, but he's screened andthe ball almost playing tricks on his eyes.
If you can imagine it even betterfrom the low angle to see how
it goes right over the head.Morgan and way were a guy, pardon
me, we're posted up there. That might have been Cisa and ball goes
right over the top of the twoof them for the goal for four to

(10:48):
one. We thought that would beEscoto's goal of the week candidate, turned
out to be a distant second CharlieGalasso going forward. Look at the sustained
pressure for San Diego. Here, second chance, no third chance, ding
ding back to coast. Finally agoal. Yeah, and it's those chances
that we've been seeing that at theend, it's not a goal. And
you see the rebounds, rebounds, rebounds. Chatlie being very smart there after

(11:11):
the initial free kick is he can'ttouch the ball. He can't be the
first player to touch the ball.He waits for the defender to be that
first point of contact. That's whyhe can then go and start that flurry
of shots and rebounds that eventually endsin a goal. But again, it's
that breath of fresh air like finallike yes, these plays actually turned into
points and meaningful scoreboard in meaningful ways. And look at that shot. It's

(11:35):
a great shot, Like how didthat not go in already? That's yeah.
Doc Reimer called it the three postring around. I mean I think
it hit two posts right, Itwas ding ding and out, so maybe
the two post ring around. Idon't know. Nonetheless, the Zaker is
happy to get the goal for fiveto one looked like five to two for

(11:56):
a second until the replay came out, at which point this is one of
the more obvious handballs you'll ever see. I loved it if you were watching
Eddie Bear's recap here that it's gotdoc like, well, it's not very
definitive. You can't really see,and then oh, I guess you can.
Yeah, there was an immediate turnof like uh oh, like expression,

(12:20):
oh, Charlie, Charlie glosso thatfootsoal move, stepping on the ball,
pulling it back, switching from rightto left and scoring. I mean,
it never gets told to just tohave that talent to put it exactly
where you want, because this isn'tnecessarily a shot as much as a power
pass, and you just have thatcorner located and to put it exactly where

(12:43):
you need to. It takes incredibleamount of skills. Golasso Chile's four hundredth
point and it comes with a pointas in pointing to a spot on the
floor for steph on Miatovich. Inthe moment Miatovich takes his little bunny hop
boom, the balls in the ppatch. You gotta love it. Congratulations
Craig Chiles. Uh, you knowwhat, do you wish it would happen

(13:05):
here? But I'm glad it happened. You get it out of the way.
It's just part of the course ofthe match. And let's keep this
match going for a for a sevento one at this point, you know
what. Congratulations, But man, okay, let's let's get it out of
the way. Now. We havebetter things to take care of. According
to Craig himself in the intro videoof every episode, indeed, and there

(13:26):
it is, how does someone decideto do this? Tony okay? So
clearly there are situations where you cango for this attempt right This is usually
a last resource attempt in near proximityof the box. But to have the

(13:48):
wherewithal to know the location of notonly the defenders, not only the goal,
but the trajectory that you have totake, the airborne aerial maneuver you
have to take behind the line, and to have it placed exactly over Gomez.
I would be honored to have thatgoalscort on me. That's a beauty

(14:11):
through and through right footed. Noless for the lefty Eskoto, there were
more goals. But here's the thing. At eight to one, and after
that goal, I truly believe Tony, this socker's just shut it down.
They were like, cool, sateone, let's celebrate the games over and
then here come the six v fivegoals for the Empire Strikers. Just somnambulance

(14:35):
defense right there for San Diego, not moving left to right very well.
A lot of ball watching for eightto two. And then we'll come around
again and here's eight three. Likea moment a moment later, it's eight
three and we're like, I don'treally care. Oh but it's a four

(14:56):
so yikes, still doesn't matter. It's a four goal game, no big
deal. But again everyone is behindthe play out on an island. Poor
Boris Pardo. Great chance there tobeat the extra keeper, doesn't happen.
Miatovich comes back, Miatovich scores eightto five, which winds up being our

(15:20):
final score in this one. Ithink a truly deceptive final score, Tony,
in that it's four six attacker goalsin a span of like four minutes.
There right after eight to one.Hey, look Grada Honrado getting in
the face of a San Diego soccerYeah, getting himself booked on that and

(15:41):
the blue card, and you knowwe were talking about that. This is
we'll talk about this a little bitlater, but well, this was scary.
I just want to let everyone know. Tavoid was on the floor of
full participation yesterday, full participation today. So it was scary, is what
it was. It was scary, and it was just that a scary scary
as two boy is. Okay, see, can we watch it one more

(16:03):
time? Let's watch it one moreso. I actually have an I don't
know if you want it with audio, because again I do see the comments
Filly in the doctor with equal opportunitygoal lasso callers, and I have to
tip my hat off to that becausenot everybody that in that situation. But
to be able to recognize the momentand recognize how great of a goal that

(16:26):
is, it takes a real understandingof the match. But here it is
momo pressure on Gomez whoa Oh mylord, that has to not only be
the goal of the game, thegoal of the week, possibly the goal
of the season. A scoto withthe bike, Oh dear Sma, what

(16:49):
a golasso doctor walk us through.Someone get the estate of Freddie Mercury on
the phone, because we got aman here who wants to ride his bicycle
a bicycle kick from outside the yellowline? Are you kidding me? King
me? That is a wonderful, wonderful addition to this goal in itself and

(17:14):
this beauty that I mean, Craig, I couldn't agree more. This isn't
agree more poetry in motion. It'sso amazing to see you able to see
these athletes do what they do onthe school ground. And it takes such
skill to not only do this,Craig, but to not hurt yourself.
Is another aspect of this where helands on a cushion, he lands so

(17:40):
well, he had this planned thatyou look at his right risk, right
hand, right risk goes dad elbow, elbow actually takes the brunt of it,
helps bring him down to the turf. I would I there's no aspect
of this I could do. Ican't do that. I definitely can't do
that. And if I did dothat, I would have two broken things.

(18:00):
I'd have a broken wrist and I'dhave a bruised tailbone. Man here,
this nope, can't nope, no, no, can't do that.
Nope, nope, Oh I couldbreak my wrist. I could do that
and still follows all the entire way. He knows that's going in and there's
no doubt, like all right,it's a good hit, it's a good

(18:21):
strike and you feel it immediately. But he has to make sure and to
see that ball going has to besomething else. Brandon looked excating. Yeah,
that's a worldie. That's a that'sone that you dream of to have
a chance to score and to evendo right, you get the ooze and
the ohs. You practice that beforethe coach gets there, before you get
warmed up and you start messing around. You score one of those coach comes

(18:42):
up and it's like, better nottry that, and then guess what,
You try it and you get yourselfa golasso. I was really excited,
man, that's we love to seeit. That's the best indoor bike I've
ever seen, Like, I've neverseen one better. Yeah, I was
there live for forbes By in Harrisburg. That was closer. That was inside

(19:03):
the crease, you know, thatwas kind of like around the top of
the d that he put it in. That was a great play that he
biked in traffic, but thirty yardsout, you know, to be able
to connect that, to have itgo right in the upper heart of the
net like dead center, you know, honestly, I mean there's been some

(19:23):
great outdoor bikes in history as welltoned in obviously it's a completely different animal,
but just in terms of distance, power accuracy, I don't know I've
ever seen a better bike. Yeah, because guess what, at the end
of the day, Like, yeah, that was the last resource to he
had because he wanted to score. He wanted to do a movement in order

(19:45):
to get a point, because itwould have been just as easy just to
stand there and let the ball drop, have him control it, look around,
pass it over, hopefully they canget a shot on. There's still
no goalkeeper. Gomez is still outsideof his box. But all of those
calculations and scenarios have to happen inorder to get to the point where you
decide, I'm going to go airborneon my weak foot and have and see

(20:11):
what happens. And that's the thingthat's to see what happens. That's good
contact, that's good enough to goahead and look behind me and okay,
cool, we're good man. Goalof the year, goal of the year,
sensation goal of the year. Iknow the n ASL made a goal
of the week video and put othergoals in, and I think that was
silly. The goal of the thegoal of the week video just should have

(20:33):
been what we just did. Itjust should have been the Escoto goal from
every angle, recycled six times, and then be like, Okay, vote,
here are your choices. Iscoto,Iskoto or Escoto. It's Iskoto,
thank you, And if anyone votesanything else, you're a homer. You're
a homer. You are a deerfan of a different player. Maybe you

(20:59):
were a relative or family member orteammate of a different player, but nobody
objectively in their right mind would pickanything other than Acto. There is not
a player in this league that wouldn'twant to have been Brandon Ascoto scoring that
goal. Period. Everybody wants toscore a goal like that, no question

(21:19):
about it. I'm sure though,Zach Record did something perfectly marvelous. So
while Kansas City got bummed three times, I'm sure I'm sure he did something
good. So I'm sure that madeGoal of the Week two. Yeah,
what a goal. I'm not gonnasay, what a game. The soccers

(21:41):
had to go out and play agood game in Empire. We talked about
that in last week's show. Itwasn't just a matter of winning. It
was a matter of going out thereand looking good and taking care of business,
restoring order, restoring confidence, puttingthe Chuabo game way behind you.
At eight one, it felt waybehind us. But a first half of
even play against Empire doesn't feel great. Two to one didn't feel great,

(22:06):
and allowing four goals in the fourthquarter didn't feel great. So there's still
a lot to work on for theSan Diego Soccers. My friend, this
is by no means a finished productof a football club. I feel like
they are still growing, and Ithink in many ways they still need to
grow because there are levels to thisand the highest level is south of the
border. And this was a goodgame to get that morale back, get

(22:30):
that moxie of This is who theSan Diego Soccers are meant to be.
They are world beaters. If youcome and challenge the soccers, we will
go ahead and layeth the smacketh down. But again, you have to go
ahead and be able to recognize thatyou do have stuff to work on,
Like you're saying, because if you'rejust gonna go and trust that we're good
right now, this town's gonna carryeverybody over into the championship game. I'm

(22:55):
afraid that that's not the case, because I'm seeing some really good team play
out of other teams that is goingto be at a point of almost perfection
by the time playoffs come in,and that is going to be enough to
take any talent off the court andrun it out. And we saw it
here with Chihuahua, and I reallyhope that that was a wake up call
for the soccers, and I hopethey answer the bell and they seemed okay

(23:18):
and answering the bell with the points. Now, let's go ahead and get
better as we move forward with oftheir different levels of competition as well,
and two big opportunities to get sixpoints here this weekend. You know,
we'll talk about it more in maASL news in terms of where the goalposts
are for the San Diego soccers goingforward, kind of from a soccer centric

(23:41):
standpoint. The more Monterey wins, the more you really start to wonder what
value there is in pursuing a maASL shield this year. It could literally
already be over because I mean,I know, Monterey has thirteen more games,
but they've played the toughest competition they'regonna face. They've won every game.

(24:03):
We went through it last week,we asked the question, will Monterey
lose? There's another chance in Milwaukee. You know, there's a couple of
chances north of the border. Butfrom what we're seeing so far, they
very well may go undefeated. Andif they do, we're gonna feel really
dumb having chased hard to get totwenty three and one. You know,

(24:25):
I mean, you need to finishone game better than the rest of the
West, essentially, if Monterey isgoing to go twenty four and oh yeah,
and you can't be worried about numbers. You can't be worried about stats
at that point, or maybe evenpersonal accolades if that those are in the
conversations at the at the end ofthe season. And I think setting those
parameters to understand that if the shieldhappens, fantastic, you take it,

(24:48):
you roll with it. But again, what is that gonna do for you?
You got that last season? Howdo that feel? You got the
shield? But this time you havean opportunity to really make up for the
lack of whatever it was in thatshiuaha game and right or wrong in a
sense. And look, I listenedto Craig Chiles in that intro in the
arena every time, and I almostresponse to him like, Okay, let's

(25:11):
see it. Let's get that lastone. Let's do it for everybody,
for San Diego, for the building, for everybody who's worked there. Let's
do it. Let's go. Andwith performances like Chihuahua, that takes a
little bit off that, a littleshine off the crest. But if they're
going to be resilient, if they'regoing to be a working champion that's going

(25:32):
to claw from the depth whenever theyget there, let's go. I'm all
in for that, Craig. Timefor a special guest. Now it's been
a situation. We've been excited fora while. I think week one,
honestly, Tony I reached out togobrideil Costa and said, listen, you
know new soccer. We'd love tohave you on the show. Please,
let's get you on. And hesaid, cool. One problem. I

(25:53):
coach every Monday, Tuesday and Fridayfrom four to eight pm and walked in
private lessons, publicly all these thisthat can't be there, so had the
chance to see him Monday morning.Like I mentioned at Le Mesa indoor,
we did it last week, sonow it's an open avenue. I said,
hey, Goby Gol, how aboutyou and I get together on the

(26:15):
old zoom zoom before you head outto coaching. So that's exactly what we
did. This was recorded yesterday fora full full open disclosure on January twenty
second, Brandon Niscota's birthday forlie ComplianosChurras. And here it is my conversation
with Gabriel Costa. All right,we promised it. Here he is Gabriel

(26:45):
Costa, Gabbi gole is joining usfor the first time on Soccer's Overtime.
I'm glad we could make this work, my friend. Thanks, thanks so
much for the time, of course, it's a pleasure. Thanks for having
me, Craig so well. Isevery Brazilian excellent footballer named Gabriel Gabigol?

(27:07):
I think a lot of them.It's a pretty common name, so there's
a lot of Gabers in Brazil.Do you prefer the more americanized Gabriel or
Gabriel Gabri is fine? I meanwhen I went to Spain, they called
me Gabriel. When in Brazil theycall me Gabriel. I mean Gabriel.
Here it's Gabriel. So it doesn'treally matter to be honest. As long
as they come a name, I'llhear it. Well they I'll call you

(27:29):
late for dinner. I feel you, I feel you. That's great,
hey, early on. Now you'refitting right in. You know, fifteen
points so far, tied for thirdon the team in eight games. That's
basically the same rate you were atlast year with the Strikers, so you're
producing at that same level. Yougotta feel comfortable about that. But just

(27:51):
overall, how has it been foryou in your first few weeks with the
team. I've really enjoyed it.It's definitely a little bit different experience.
There's so many players to do everything. You know, everybody in the soccer
team, and with the Empire,I felt like I had to do more.
So it's a good thing. Andof course points will come no matter
what. So I just try todo my job, try to learn from

(28:11):
the guys that are playing here, just learning from them, and I know
little by little we'll get better. It's one thing to try and fit into
a team, it's another win.A couple of the pieces get taken away
along the way. You've had someroad games without the captain, Craig Chiles.
Leonardo has been out the last couplethree games, and that does slide

(28:33):
the offensive burden around a little bit. It is seemed as such that when
yourself, Brandon and Charlie find yourway out of the field at the same
time, it just feels like agoal is gonna cook every time. Have
you enjoyed the synergy working with thosetwo guys, Yeah, of course,
And that's the thing. That's thething about our team, and that's why
I bought into the planoff coming hereis that if people are out for either

(28:56):
work or injury, there's many otherplayers to fit in. And once those
guys are those guys are out andit's for whoever is left over there and
we are sure that everybody can dothe jobs. So it's actually very fun
to play with all those guys. Now, your first game back to Empire
was last week was a very importantgame for the club, of course,

(29:17):
coming off of a loss to Chihuahua, But what was it for you personally
to go back to Toyota Arena itwas a little bit different. Obviously.
I think I played like over tengames in that arena before. But I
was funny, it didn't really getto my head about the fact that I
was playing against them because we hadplayed them already at home. I just
had felt a little bit of myhamstring during warm up, so I wasn't

(29:38):
a little bit upset and scared togo into it. But I think I
did fine end of the day,and I'm happy that we got the win.
I mean, you started it offwith an absolute laser. Did that
make my hamstring feel a little bitbetter? Yeah? I felt a little
bit in warm up, and thenthat was once I shot it, I
felt a little bit that. Iremember people talking to me like, hey,

(29:59):
why are you not set? AndI was like, I didn't think
about it, was just a littlebit upset that I saw my hamstring.
Then. Interesting, how important wasthat game kind of internally just bouncing back?
Obviously there were levels to these things, and we'll talk about Schuaba in
a second, but to have agame that yeah, the final score is
eight five, but it was eightto one. You know late in the
fourth you guys really had that gameby the neck. Was that a comforting

(30:22):
feeling. Yeah. I mean I'vebeen part of teams that always win and
teams that don't win all the time. With those teams, soccer's already established
team that we know we're gonna winvery like most of the games. So
once you get one lass, it'smore about like just play another game because

(30:42):
the win is gonna come back. It's more that than you know, lack
of confidant or more like anxiety fromnot winning. It's just a matter of
time for us to get back.So at least I didn't feel that pressure
or you know, there's nothing goingon like that. Let's talk a little
bit about the Chiuaba match. Itcertainly was a stunner to the league,

(31:03):
the soccers. I honestly didn't knowGabriel until I was told by John Green
some point in the fourth quarter thatthe soccers had never been shut out,
have never been, have never been. I've got wood right here, I'm
knocking the wood. Have never beenshut out in modern history since coming back
under Phild Slovagio two thousand and nine, they've never been shut out. Got

(31:26):
within three minutes of that. Howmuch do you credit what you saw from
Chihuahua how much do you credit whereyou guys were physically mentally after a really
tough weekend of travel or is ita mix of the both. Yeah,
it got to be a mix ofboth. I don't want to see here
and say that we weren't you readyfor X reasons because I don't want to

(31:48):
put excuses. We weren't out ourbass, that's for sure. We didn't
play well. We didn't We weren'table to like fix what was going on
in the game. And I thinkpeople, or at least for myself,
was exhausted. I think I sattwo hours, did not have the energy,
and I think that happened with alot of the guys and even the
players that were coming in that didn'ttravel. They they didn't travel, but

(32:08):
they also weren't one hundred percent. So think was a little bit of everything.
They had new coach, new goaliethat played well, and their energy,
and they press used the whole time, which is something we're not comfortable
and usually teams are not able todo that because we usually break pressure.
But we were tired, so Ithink I think we just didn't have enough

(32:29):
with the ball, and then wegot tired and more tired and mentally we
were exhausted too, so we justa little bit of everything. But again
you got to prep to two hourbecause they ended up beating us, and
you know it wasn't close. Theyclosed the game. We was early in
the game that we you know,we didn't have a lot of chances until
the like I said, third third, three minutes left that we scored.

(32:51):
And after watching the game, Iwatched the game many times and I remember
once you saw it once it saidthat, and I was like, wow,
thank God to avoid because I didnot would not want to be a
part of the team that gets shutout for the first time. Yeah,
I was truly honestly blown away bythat. But then again, you figure
Craig Charles was on all those teams, so usually that's a goal or two

(33:13):
right there. In and of itself. It's it's remarkable how this sport goes
though in it I mean that somethinga result like that is still possible.
Anything's possible in this game with thecrazy bounces in the walls. Yeah,
it's crazy. Like when I firstjoined, I was so excited to play
a game that you know, itends up being like, I don't know,

(33:35):
twelve to ten. I was soimpressed by the fact they can have
so many goals back to back, and it's impressed with as well, how
the momentum gets teams going. Soit's very fun. And yet, as
you found out here in San Diego, twelve to ten is not going to
be a score we're going to acceptbecause giving up ten is not okay.
I don't think that's ever gonna happenhere, Gabriel, just talking about kind

(34:00):
of the living side of things. So who are you clicking with on the
team. What has it been likeadjusting to being here in San Diego.
It was usier than I thought, obviously coming from an opposing team, and
I had, you know, buthas with a lot of the players,
But it was usier. They werevery They made me very comfortable from the

(34:21):
beginning, and obviously I knew alot of them from before, like half
of them. I had played youknow, off season with them, and
you know, I played video gameswith some. We go to Starbucks together.
So it's it's pretty fun and there'snothing really for me to complain.
I Los San Diego and I'm happyto be here. What's something that soccers
fans don't know about you? Hmm? That they don't know about me.

(34:46):
I don't know if you look. You guys said a lot already about me.
I'm assuming that I've lived in Spainfor like a year and a half
when I was under age, likesixteen. I think maybe that's one of
the things. That's when I playedfoots there too, So that definitely helped
me with the indoor world. Whatwas it like to be away from your

(35:07):
home, your family, your country, being in an entirely different place at
that age. What was that likefor you as a young man growing up?
Yeah, that shapped me a lotand how I am and like with
a lot of my feelings and beingable to control them. I think that
helped a lot because I think Ilost the first time. I was fifteen,

(35:28):
and then I was away for likefour months I think, then it
came back. Then after a monthI went for like a year and a
half. Then after I came back, I came to the US and fully
like my greatest to day US.So I've been around my pretty much my
whole life as far as I remember. So, I mean it's tough for
everyone, you know, for theirown ways, but I was just able

(35:51):
to I'm happy that I was ableto adapt pretty well. And obviously I
married than non American. It's alittle bit easier for those that have,
you know, girlfriends or her wive'sin Brazil. You know, my life
is a little bit easier because she'shere. So yeah, I'm used to
it. When you think and youdream, do you think in dream in
Portuguese or in English? Both?It happens either in Portuguese or English,

(36:15):
but mostly in English, to behonest, because I'm always speaking English unless
I'm calling like friends or my family, so most of the time he's English,
but a lot of the times it'sPortuguese as well. Where have you
found the best Brazilian food yet inthe States. We just found a Brazilian
place called Brazuka Cafe, me andmy wife found like two weeks ago,

(36:37):
I think in Orange County, andit's by far like the best that I've
had in the US. Okay, all right, we'll look for the Google
recommendation. Yeah, very good.Along the line. All right, before
we let you go, it's abig weekend. It's Alumni Night. First
off, I don't know if youknow that on Saturday night, but it

(36:58):
is the last alumni night at Pachangaarena. So for Brian Quinn and Julie
v and Zoltanteth and some of theseyou know, all time legendary players,
it's the last chance for them tobe down on the arena. It's always
a special night for the soccers franchisebecause you know you are playing in front
of these MISL greats. You're playingKevin Crowe, you know, et cetera,

(37:22):
these players that have been a partof indoor history. Saint Louis is
in town for that game, butthen it's right back on a plane.
We're doing it again, but inreverse. You guys are flying into Tacoma
this time instead of out of Tacoma. So obviously you've had experience with this.
Now it'll be the third time alreadythis season. But what is the

(37:43):
challenge different when you know it's backto back. Yeah, that's that's pretty
insane that we had to do allthose traveling. I'm not used to that,
and my body definitely feels it becauseplaying outdoor, it was always a
game. Even in college, waspretty close, but we had like two
day rest, so I was ableto be somewhat recovered. But with the

(38:05):
MSL, it's pretty tough. Ithink for me at least, what I
would say is I will try tosave myself in the first game, because
before we play Chiuaha. If youremember the night before, it was a
very tough against against Takhoma. Ithink we won with like two minutes left,
and I was exhausted after that gameand thinking about having a game that
the day before. My mind willremember Chiuahua and be how tired I was

(38:29):
for that game. So I willnot let that happen again. So I'm
there to not let you know, another lose come in our way. But
yeah, watching it'd be fun.I think it's in the halftime right the
Alumni game. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Otherwise it'll be fun to watch
these guys because I I've never reallywatched them. I have to probably should
do some research and watch them backwhatever they played, because that they must

(38:52):
be really good. Yeah. Well, ask Childs a couple questions. He
can fill you in. Certainly heknows all the history, and otherwise you
can ask me a couple more andI can fill you and on the rest.
So it's a history that's unlike anyother. I'll tell you that.
It's it's a history of true dominationand greatness. And international superstars and everything
in between. Speaking of international stars, here's the newest one on the team.

(39:14):
It's it's Gotty Goal. Thank youso much, man, appreciate the
time. Good luck with coaching, and we'll see out on the floor.
Thank you, Greg. Pleasure tobe here. Thank you. Okay,
and now back to Live Soccer's overtime. Different look, no hat,
different jacket, different T shirt becausewe're in real time now, Tony,

(39:38):
we're back out of the time machine. But what were your thoughts on what
you heard from Gotty Gold there?Oh, Albrigado Gabriel. Well, we'll
say that's about all I have,but h no, I really liked hearing
the fact that it's a real perspectiveof what the team is going through from
the loss against Shiuahuan, how thatbounce back really was fired up because of

(40:04):
that game and the fallout from it, and just you know, I love
that you ask those questions as faras it's just a respect to give to
players that do come from other placesin the world of like how do you
pronounce your name and what do youlike that? Like that's just a great
consideration that a lot of people don'tdon't do that, right like you know,
Jose or Jose. You know, you can make the effort, but

(40:28):
it's one of those things where youwant to make the person feel comfortable.
And Gabby seems incredibly comfortable in allaspects here in San Diego and with the
soccers, and that's that's great tosee. Great for him to recognize that,
Yeah, no, I had someTIFFs with with some of these players
before, but now I have themas my teammates and it's something that we're
going to have to work through andnow at the end of the day,

(40:49):
it's really coming together and the synergiesis palpable. And that's why I love
about Goby himself is that he recognizesthat, yeah, Empire, I had
a little bit more of the loadto carry and how to make sure that
you know, I was doing asmuch as I can. But here it's
not so much that he's taking astep back, but he's just letting his
teammates also contribute to that. Andthat's an aspect that I think is going

(41:12):
to be an X factor when itcomes to playoffs. He's if Escoto's playing
the way that he's playing, andthen you add Gabi to that and Leo
comes back healthy. It's a completelydifferent San Diego soccer scene that we're talking
about. I think we heard andis one of his last answers there too,
you know, almost skipping ahead tosoccer's new He's a big key for
this weekend's preview, which is takecare of business against Saint Louis, like

(41:36):
drop the hammer against Saint Louis,to have an easy game and the type
of game where you're not going tobe exhausted at the end. You know,
they played a nail blider in Tacomathat went right down to the final
whistle. They finished that game, and then they're on a flight the very
next morning, and as you heardhim say, like basically a couple hours
sleep really no chance to reset yourmental fittigue from being in such a battle.

(42:01):
And then it absolutely laid out intoSunday's match. So I certainly expect
there's going to be lineup changes fromSaturday to Sunday as well. I mean,
Gregor hasn't gotten on a flight yetthis year to Tacoma, so you
know, we'll see if anything changesin that respect. But for a team

(42:22):
that doesn't have the level of depththat it had a year ago with an
m two team. Maybe that isgoing to be a real key is how
quickly can you take care of businesson Saturday so that you can kind of
pull the parachute for Sunday's game.Yeah, And it's that load management and
the players know it, and heknows it himself. As far as the
body goes is knowing that that restis absolutely crucial. And you know the

(42:45):
travel is grueling with travel coming upas well, that's something that they're gonna
have to take that mental note. And the players themselves have to take care
of themselves more than say in theoutdoor game, because there's somebody who provides
the food here, they have toprovide to their own essentially ways of going
about things. Every player is different, Every player does different rituals, different

(43:06):
stretches, and all of that hasto be factored into how to better prepare
themselves for the training that the soccerswill give them and put them part on
them to go into the game matchfit. So it's multi layered, Craig,
and it's sometimes not something considered, but I'm glad we're talking about it
absolutely. So thanks again to Gabby, I really appreciate his time. Thanks

(43:28):
to Xavier. A week before whohad the same situation couldn't come on live,
but we were able to get himon. I'd much prefer to have
a live interview where we're getting yourcomments in the chat and we're getting Tony's
questions mixed in with mine. Butyou know, we'll do what we can
to get you the stars of theSan Diego Soccers on Soccers Overtime. We
will not rest until they are allon the show. We will catch them

(43:49):
all like Pokemon in our little disco, We'll catch them all. Okay,
is everyone here? Has everyone arrived? Is everyone in the waiting room?
Is everybody in the chat? It'stime for m ASL News. Come on
in, make yourself at home.Don't worry. I'm not going to burn
you too bad. I don't think. I don't think we got anything too

(44:10):
serious. Uh this week in mASL News, what we've got is Kansas
City flame out is what we got. We've got the comments. Taking a
season that was looking like it wasgonna be a chance for number one and
now it's really looking like are yougonna be number four? Are you gonna

(44:30):
are you gonna be in the sacrificiallamb position of fourth? And going into
Monterey in the first round, becausethere can't be a Comets fan anywhere that's
happy with what they saw in Mexico. Now, you know last Sunday,
the twelve to five loss, youknow, coming off the heels of a
loss at home, that was bad. But the second game Tuesday, it

(44:52):
was a game that started when wewere on the air last week and then
I was sending you texts, Well, you were doing two balls in a
mic, going like, you can'tbelie leave this guy, you can't believe
this match. Kansas City was supposedto win that match. They were up,
they were up at halftime, theywere up in the third quarter,
they took a lead in the fourthquarter. Was there some sketchy officiating in

(45:14):
the fourth quarter. Arguably so,although I honestly think the penalty against Chad
Vandergriff that led to the penal theblue card that was the goal ahead goal
was the right call. He reachedout from two hands with two hands from
behind on a player and and yankedhim. So that you know, okay,

(45:35):
the call with the play that Montereyhad with one second left to scissor
down a Kansas City player, thatshould have been a red and a suspension.
In my opinion, they gave theplayer a blue card, but the
cynicism of it was so extreme, especially in that it was the last footballing
action of the match in a onegoal game, and you know, by

(45:59):
committing that foul, essentially the gamewas ended regardless of what penalty you gave.
So to me, that's why ithad to be a red I was.
I was very disappointed with that particularcall, which was also funny because
you might, I know, youwent back and watched a little bit of
it. But like the Flash announcers, who I love. I love the

(46:21):
Flash announcers. No one is havingmore fun than the Flash announcers. They're
singing through goals. They are goofingaround on the air. I mean all
the time, they're goofing around.H The keeper for the comments was Philip
Jamadhu, so he became Yabba dabadoya yaa. I played three clips from

(46:47):
that game the next morning on anyoneelse did, just because of how good
their calls were. But through thatthey were riding Kia Deppena like the pony
outside Woolworths that she put in thepenny to make it rock. I mean,
every single time the whistle blues.Yes, that's the Endopna. At

(47:13):
what point He's like, uh,nobody is kia Kiya Yeah, kio Kiro,
Ultra Marca another another brand. It'sjust absolutely tyg. But I mean
they were riding him like a drayhorse and then what do you know in
the fourth quarter all the calls wentmonters white. Yeah. I mean,

(47:35):
talk about a fun one in allaspects. I was sports entertained uh for
that match. And that's that's whatthis league can go ahead and have.
I have to agree right with witha red card, Uh, shout there
that should have been because you canin a game like that, you're essentially
rewarding a team for playing dirty andand cheating the system. Uh. There's
no such thing as let's tack onextra time at all. But you know,

(47:59):
it's it's a strategic loophole in away that I think even with that
call, and had it been ared and a suspension, they still would
have done that and would have calledit worth it and probably man of the
match worthy because of that action, and you know what you took them for
the team. Should there be anNFL like game cannot end on a defensive

(48:20):
penalty, type rule where if youcommit a deliberate blue to deny a scoring
chance in the final seconds, youactually get to have that power play.
That's interesting in two ways. Right, there's the Rocket League, So I
don't know if you're familiar with RocketLeague and the Little Car I know it,
I've never played it. Yeah,So essentially, if the ball is

(48:43):
in the air and not touch theground, the clock can be at zero
and you can score a winning goal. It can score a tiang goal in
that sense, right, So Ithink that's possible. But there is instances
where the foul causes the action ofa free kick, which then you know
it can mean a one last shot. And I've played in leagues where that's

(49:06):
that's been a part of it whereyeah, this is a foul, but
I can't blow my whistle in thissituation, almost like you're not supposed to
blow a whistle when it's a dangerousone on one play on the outdoor game
because you're taking the advantage away. You still want that to happen. But
again do you in part, Well, if the ball's in the air,
you can still have a play andthen you know, as long as it

(49:27):
doesn't touch the ground. Interesting butuh, you know, I don't.
I think we're onto something here.Let's contact the league. I'm just asking
questions. I know you're watching,Ryan, I know you're watching, you
know, Commissioner Tozer. You know, you guys are at least getting the
clip of it. But it mightbe something to consider. The thing about
that particular play was the distance fromgoal. Because obviously, if if you're

(49:51):
committing a terrible blue card penalty inthecrease, it's going to be a penalty
kick. Yeah, so you knowyou've got that, or or it could
be a shootout, and you know, is so on and so forth.
But from the distance that they werefrom the goal, that decision, which
was to straight up leg wrap andtackle a player and deny their opportunity to
send a you know, miracle hailmary long ball into the zone for the

(50:15):
remedy to be Okay, well, now you can kick your miracle remedy long
ball and you kicked a tweet.Okay, you know, game over.
It didn't It just allows for thatto happen again, is my point.
It allows for that to happen again. Nobody got red carded, nobody got
suspended. Really, there wasn't Idon't think any controversy around it. There

(50:36):
should have been some controversy, Ibelieve around that final call, but that
was the eight to seven game, and hey, you know, okay,
they got shoved twelve five coming offa loss at home to Utica, you
know, very disappointing for Kansas City. But then they had two days to
kind of like chill reset. Theycome back. They lose this game in

(50:58):
Monterey, but it's a complete heartbreaker. They played great, they absolutely
could have won. Then they getone travel day, another day to rest,
plot, prepare, stew and theyhit Corners Sport Arena to take on
Chihua and they get boat raced eighttwo final score. This result, on

(51:22):
the back of what Chihuahua did tous at Pachonga Arena is why I'm like,
yep, you got to put Shiwabain the top three teams in the
MASL. This is the new Savagewith Reinoso not allowing goals at all.

(51:42):
Yeah, now this team is reallysomething that's been a bit of a revelation,
right They're coming into their own andyeah, you look at Kansas City's
downward spiral, it looks like it'sstill still might be happening, but it's
still in that well, there stillhave been. They have been really good
in the first part of the sea. So they are a good team.
They're capable of putting a good teamout there and being competitive. But then

(52:05):
Chihuahua, did they have that extrapazazz agenisiqua after coming to San Diego and
beating San Diego and just riding thathigh still new car smell, but now
you're driving it in your in yourtown, showing it off to everybody.
And you know, I think that'sa combination of column Ay and columb perfect
storm of that coming together. ButI saw this a two and I'm like,

(52:29):
Chihuahua is not messing around, andyou know what Porto comments, but
they just run into the bus.Saw that Chihuahua now is once again when
we say there are levels to this, you know, this is the kind
of thing. I'm not trying.I don't want to say anything bad way.
This is the kind of thing peoplein the MAASL need to pay attention

(52:51):
to. These are the types ofresults that ma ASL people should be weighing
heavily. Come awards time, comeselecting top teams. Because we can list
all the Comets who kick butt againstHarrisburg, you know, and you know,
just flatten Saint Louis And we cantake that and just rate it even

(53:15):
to everything else and do ourselves adisservice. Well, we can say that
how you play against the soccers, how you play against Monterey, how you
play against Chihuahua, Like, that'swhat you need to stand up and pay
attention to. If you're getting dominatedby these other teams and then yeah,
you're you're beating some of the lowerteams in the league. What's that phrase

(53:35):
I heard a couple of weeks ago, flat track bullies. That's what you
are. You're a flat track bully. When everything's just flat track and no
problem, you're racing by, andthen once it starts to get a little
hilly and a little mountainous and youget to start to have some grade that
you have to go over, allof a sudden, you slow way down.
And that's what There's a lot ofthat in this league. The MVP

(53:55):
has been determined every year by theguy who can rack up the most points
against the bottom tier teams and dominatethe most against the third and fourth tier
teams, and what they do againstthe first tier teams really doesn't matter because
at the end of the day, they just look at the score sheet and
they just look at the points accruedeand goals and assistant points and say,
okay, well that player must bethe best. I mean, I'm telling

(54:16):
you right now, if I wasgoing to fill out and all m ASL
bracket right now, I don't knowif there would be anything but Flash on
the bracket. I mean, Imight find my way to one or two
other players, but I would makesure that the Flash had someone at every
single position, because that's they're thebest team right now. I Roho Yo

(54:38):
Pantera Elsarhent though Christian Hernandez, youknow, you go down the list.
I mean, I would just stockthe ballot because that's clearly the best team.
That's everyone can Everyone has the right. Everyone who has a ballot has
the right to fill it out theway they want. I fill it on
NBA style. I look for bestplayers on best teams. That's how I
do it. And the reason thatpeople in the NBA who get paid lots

(55:01):
of money and people who have tohave, you know, be part of
a writer's association and everything else, the reason they do it that way is
because it's fair to the players asopposed to just going, oh, well,
you know the kid on Washington scoresthirty one points a game, he
must be League MVP team went seventeenand sixty two. But must be League

(55:24):
MVP. Yeah, and I meanuntil proven otherwise, right, Like the
flash has to be the backbone ofthat potential best eleven slash six in this
version of this voting system. AndI challenge, I challenge the league to
really look hard at some of thegreat defending and contributions that players are doing

(55:45):
behind the attacking line, because that'swhere a lot of this attack and bases
start from. You have to havea good defense when building a team.
If you tell me from the back, from the back to the front,
you need to have a very versatileand solid defender to be able to go
up and distribute the ball, havethe speed enough to come back and track

(56:07):
back and do everything that a midfielderdoes. And occasionally if you can get
yourself a goal or be involved inpoints, that's something that has to be
taken into consideration. Even more,a goalkeeper like White, that's one guy,
that's one position, that's one individualwho's single handedly taking goals away and

(56:28):
opportunities and points away from players ona day in, day out, quartering,
quarter out basis, that's the mostimportant and valuable position. And we've
seen it right with Boris. IfWars isn't there, you know what,
respecto love smiles, but at theend of the day, it's it's gonna
look different on the score sheet,in the score line if he's not present

(56:49):
there. Going through the weekend thatwas in masl On Saturday, there was
just one match at Ambush Blue OutBaltimore at Family Arena in Saint Louis eight
to three. Baltimore loses again. The Blast are eleven points out of fourth

(57:14):
place now in the East, elevenpoints out of fourth place for our beloved
Blast, trailing Kansas City, whohas twenty two points eleven points for the
Baltimore Blast. They do have threegames in hand on Kansas City. However,
if they won all three, they'dstill be in fifth place by a

(57:37):
couple of points. So not muchto say right there, other than you
know, we'll talk about the Ambushin a minute. And Saint Louis scoring
eight goals is highly unexpected. Thatdid not happened on a Saturday or anything
close to it. So I justkind of took that as okay. Baltimore,

(57:58):
Baltimore doing Baltimore things, Baltimore athome, beating up on cream puffs
like Harrisburg, putting up Instagram videos. You know, we beat Empire,
we beat Harrisburg. We're back. You're not back, dude, You're fifth.
You're the fifth best team in theEastern. You're gonna stay there,
total respecto to not not ed Hill. Continuing through the weekend, that was

(58:23):
interesting game for Dallas. Actually gaveMilwaukee a ride up in Wisconsin for three
win for the Wave there. ButDallas was was good and actually might have
beaten them. Blas Perez heard hishamstring after the first half. He had
a couple of goals though early on, and I know Tom Win on the

(58:45):
broadcast was kind of saying over tolike, well, where's blasp Perez.
Where's blais Perez? This game isgood, Like where is he? He
was hurt? So he got hurtin the first half. Marcio is still
doing Marcio things. Goal and threehelpers, but yeah, four three there.
Nice, nice win for Milwaukee. Not super impressive. The last two

(59:07):
games of the weekend were the twomost interesting games of the weekend, really
entertaining match to watch in Upstate NewYork, as Utica and Texas went back
and forth. Nine to eight wasthe final. However, that LOGOSL Soccer
logo is dead wrong, incorrect. It was the Utica Riggies taking on the

(59:29):
Texas Outlaws. Did you have anyany idea what a riggy was, Tony?
I had no clue what was goingon. I don't, but I
don't know when I heard that thiswas a thing, and it might have
been on MASL Facebook group, butI like grazed over that had that logo.
I'm like, okay, I thinkthis is some I literally just scrolled

(59:52):
past and I thought, okay, this is some you know, minor league
team that's coming up at some point. And right after doing some research,
I I didn't I didn't know whatto expect. I think I was looking
at the schedule from the m ASL. I'm like, who is this team?
Is this another in season one offFootsal game? And this is a
Footsal team? Like, what's goingon? Like? And then I went

(01:00:14):
over and saw the news of them. I've never heard this was possible in
any league, but a one gamename change one just complete brand appealal yeah,
wild. It happens in minor leaguebaseball all the time, where they'll
they'll just change and they're the TacoMasters for a day, or you know

(01:00:36):
whatever, the Margaritas or you know, a Jimmy Buffett team or something.
When I saw the logo, Ithought it was some kind of sandwich like
because look at doesn't that look likethere's like some vegetables sticking out the top
there. Yeah, I mean, unless you're told that that's Rickatoni, do

(01:01:00):
you know that's Rigatoni and not evenfrom the name. I mean, I
mean Riggy's Yes, I can puttwo and two together now. But look,
it looks like a overstuffed tamali.Yeah, it could be like a
euro you know, like sort oflooks like a euro rap. Yeah,
it could be a burrito. Iwas like, well, is that what

(01:01:21):
they call burritos? An upstate NewYork Riggish No. In fact, Riggis
is short for chicky Riggies or chickenriggies. Because somehow, and I did
the same thing toy Runner did.I googled it. I googled Chicky Riggy

(01:01:42):
and then it led me to someI wasn't in the New Yorker, but
it was like in some boutique websiteabout how chicken rigatoni is the Upstate New
York specialty dish that it just happensto be something that if you go to
Upstate New York, you're gonna lookfor the chicky riggy on the menu and

(01:02:05):
it's gonna be rigatoni pasta in aspicy, creamy tomato sauce with of course,
you know, chunks of chicken andmaybe some other vegetables along the way.
I think it's one of these ifyou know, you know, or
if you're there you get it,Like as I'm sure if we were one
day out of nowhere the San Diegofish Tacos and we were just like,

(01:02:30):
the fish tacos are here, thefish tacos are there, the fish tacos
are everywhere. There might be someonein upstate New Yorker's like, what are
you talking about? Fish taco? What is that? Just like I was
like, riggy, what is riggy? What are you guys doing? I
thought that, you know, thelocal cuisine would dictate that it's steam hams

(01:02:52):
that Upstate New York and Yudica isknown for It's one of the most viral
little clips of the SIMS is thatSuperintendent Chalmers and Principal Skinner are eating and
he sneaks over to Krusty Berger andsays, oh, I just made these.
Where are these? Oh they're steamHams. Never I'm from Utica and

(01:03:13):
I've never heard of steam hams.Oh. Well, you know, it's
a regional dialect. So it's allgood. But that's maybe in the maybe
in the nineties it would have beenthe Unicas steam cams. Steamed ham soccer
is on the air. It's aregion about indeed. Indeed, so you

(01:03:37):
know, shout out to the Riggies. Lost. Does that mean we never
get to be the Riggies again?Oh? Wanted over time. I mean,
it was a really good game thatUnicas scored like what, I don't
know. In the closing minute,Taylor Bond got a goal in the middle.
H Taylor was really doing the job. It's great to see Taylor,
you know, continuing to succeed uhin the Major Arena Soccer League. Then

(01:04:00):
Texas gets the win, so,you know, good win for Texas.
And we had those two teams,Texas and Utica in the same tier as
I remember last week, and thatwas why because it's in that group of
teams that could theoretically win a playoffseries depending on the matchup. Ten seconds
left for that bond goal. Yeah, it was a great It was a
great game. It was a reallyreally entertaining match, great flow back and

(01:04:24):
forth, you know, very veryexciting, entertaining to watch. Bummer for
the Riggies. Who can never bethe Riggies ever again because they lost,
So come up with a new regionalfood to name your team after. No,
you can be the Riggies again. It's fine, it's fine, it's
fine. We would never do that. We would never take a name,

(01:04:45):
lose and then have the game havethe name again. Yeah, it's a
first name. It's cursed. It'scursed forever. I would never eat Chicken
Rigatoni ever again. If I livedin Utica and was a supporter of the
club, I'd be like, I'mswearing off the Chicky Riggy for the rest
of my life. I just liketo say chicky riggy. I don't like

(01:05:06):
to say chicken riggy. I liketo say chicky riggy. And I'm gonna
just keep saying chicky Riggy, ChickyRiggy chicky riggy Okay, last match was
the match of the year so farin the league. Can't beat the flesh,
can't beat the flash. Chihuahua playedreally well, had that early lead,

(01:05:31):
shut out in the second half. They said Arena Monterrey. It was
Arena Barregos. They did not moveback. They did not put it on
the grand stage. If they did, I would have really had something to
say about that. No, Montereyis five and zero against the Chihuahua Savage,

(01:05:53):
which make the Chihuahua Savage the mostunderrated team in the league at four
and five, four and oh againstevery team that's not Monterey, oh and
five against Mona Ray. It doesIt brings me no pleasure to scroll down
this score sheet, Tony and seethe star, second star, big roh.

(01:06:15):
Yeah, and in the moment, the moments, because those ended up
being the two goals that led tothis four to two victory. And look,
it's a it's it's very stark seeingthem succeed elsewhere and doing very well
and being able to come back ina difficult match too, because again Chiwawa
played really well, scored two early, really fantastic goals. Any other week

(01:06:41):
contender of goal of the week, but as we know, doesn't take that
one. But then just to seeim and and Rojo assimilate very well together
and be part of something special tobe that's happening over and I don't know,
Bregos, I don't know. Ialso don't know how I have how
I completely feel about that, AndI don't know. The lights. The

(01:07:04):
dark lights is kind of ominous inthat arena to see what's going on,
and there was a common early asfar as I is that the camera is
that dark like that in the arena. I'm not entirely sure. I don't
know until I'm there, and Idon't think i'll be there, you know,
I don't even know if we madeit to the finals, depending on

(01:07:24):
when it was, if I'd beable to travel to Arena Bregos with the
radio show. But I'd love tosee a Monterey San Diego final. I'd
love to see those teams match up, and the soccers, frankly, have
work to do if they want toget there. You know, we're not
going to put anything in the bagbecause Chihuahua is in this conference, man,

(01:07:45):
and on the heels of that lastperformance and knowing how tough it is
to win at Cornersport Arena. Idon't think I don't think anyone in San
Diego should be acting fat and sassyat any point the remainder of the season
to me, and I'll I'll justsay very briefly, I wasn't at training
long today, just you know, situation with the new job and whatnot.

(01:08:08):
But even in the brief time Iwas there, a couple players had a
couple of words with me, notwords with me like craign no, but
just noting like, there are thingswe want to work on as a group.
There are things we want to getbetter at as a group. There
is a need, there is adesire from this team to improve, to

(01:08:30):
work on some things, and itis incumbent on the coaching staff to work
on those things and to give thisteam every opportunity to succeed when they are
put in the most difficult situations.Because right now we're a little bit of
a flat track bully. You know, we're able to pummel teams that are
of a lesser level on the tierlist, But when we took on Shihuahua,

(01:08:51):
it didn't look like that at all. So, you know, understanding
all the things that went into thatmatch, the travel, the difficulty,
the injuries, everything else. Nonetheless, soccers have work to do, so
that turns us to Soccer's News.Let's start with kind of going through the
bullet points things that I want thefront office wants to make sure that we

(01:09:12):
get out on the show, andthat I want to get out on the
show as well. I believe wementioned this last week too, but February
thirteenth is confirmed as the makeup datefor Texas coming to town from the water
Main game. So they're going tobe here on the thirteenth and the fifteenth,
a Tuesday and a Thursday, bothseven thirty starts. The new news
that I'm excited to share with youis that the concessions we received from the

(01:09:36):
arena for the Thursday match have beenextended to the Tuesday match. So on
February thirteenth, like February fifteenth, free parking at Pachanga Arena. There's a
fifteen dollars savings right there for bothmatches. For both matches, three dollars

(01:09:56):
bud lights, So it's a budlight Thursday night. It's a bud light
Tuesday night at Pachanga Arena. Bythe way. This coming Saturday is a
bud Light Saturday Night at Pachanga Arena, three dollars bud Light cans this Saturday
against the Saint Louis Ambush for alumnigame. But February thirteenth. February fifteenth,

(01:10:17):
back to back against the Outlaws, with one day's rest in between for
Valentine's Day so everyone can take outtheir novias. We're still working on the
media game reschedule. It will notbe February thirteenth. It will not be
February thirteenth. I'm here to tellyou that right now. We have at

(01:10:39):
the staff meeting, we determined thatbeyond beyond a reasonable doubt, it just
makes no sense to try and havea Tuesday night media game. It's not
gonna work. People are busy, people are working no good. So it's
gonna be in March. I don'tknow which game. I'm still kind of

(01:11:00):
stumping for Star Wars Night, whichis a Friday night, but it could
be one of those Sundays, thethird or the tenth. It'll be one
of those dates. But don't youworry, Tony, we are going to
have the media game. I wasnot worried for a second My record is
the one that people are chasing andgetting me to take a loss at Sports
Arena, at Patango Arena, it'snot going to be the case. So

(01:11:21):
I think other people start reving upthe engines and you know, use the
extra time that you're given because itliterally took an act of whatever it was
to stop another victory on that halftimecourt. Oh yeah, Well, I
wonder if any of the alums areout there with an Allen wrench and an
all and a sledgehammer to try andpop a main because this Saturday night is

(01:11:45):
the final alumni game halftime. It'sspectacular at Pachanga Arena for the greats of
the past as the soccers take onthe Saint Louis ambush. Seven to oh
five will be the opening kickoff, and then at halftime the alumni halftime game,
final chance for those guys who madethe Sports Arena what it was in

(01:12:06):
the nineteen eighties to be back onthat same field, same turf, in
between the boards, with those standsabove them, with their fans cheering them
on, with their names above them, and the rafters. It's not like
we won't have an alumni game nextyear. In front Wave arena, but
it's different. This is the grandOld Arena. This is the last chance
here on the Midway, So verymuch looking forward to that. John Green's

(01:12:29):
handling all the alums coming in.But we know we're going to have a
big group there on Saturday, andit is a three dollar budd Light Saturday
Night, So prepare your uber oryour Lyft or have your designated driver within
your group. If the supporters groupsare there, designate a few drivers.
Because the three dollar bud Light cans. I mean, look, there's no

(01:12:50):
better deal in intoxication than the threedollar bud light can and in sports in
San Diego, right like, it'sfun to come out. I had a
couple of people who were interested incoming out last game and they went to
the Chiwawa game and even though theresult was a result, they had a
really good time and are pumped whenI told them that, hey, there's

(01:13:12):
also this type of nights and thenyou can go ahead and get some deals.
And they got some, they gotsome child care taken care of,
and they'll be there at the twentyseven for three dollars bud night Lights or
bud Light Nights, bud Light Nights, but bud nights, Butt nights bud
Bud night lights, but a budnight light is different. It's Budd Budweiser

(01:13:33):
that you plug into your wall tokeep you warm and drunk at night,
just like oh Budweiser, No budlight nights or when we drink bud lights
for three dollars at Pachanga Arena.Lisa an SDSX in the chat, do
you know what happened with Paul? That should be Dougherty pulled, Dougherty pulled,

(01:13:55):
Dougherty left the staff of the Empirest Vikers left Paul Right's staff after
the second week of the season. So basically they had their first couple of
games and then they went on aroad trip without him, and then when
they came home that was that.So love Paul already didn't work out with
him and Paul up in Empire.Hopefully for Paul Right it works out up

(01:14:18):
in Empire. However, things arenot working out so far up in Empire.
Back to us, I want tomention this special from the soccer's ticket
department, Saturday, February twenty fifth. February twenty fifth, Not sure what
day of the week that is,Let me check on the old calendar here,

(01:14:42):
February twenty fifth is u Sunday.Sunday February twenty fifth, it's Country
Night when the Soccers take on theKansas City Comets, and you can take
part in a special line dance downon the field at Pachanga Arena before the
game. If you buy a specialboot scootin ticket to the Soccers and the

(01:15:05):
Comets boot scootin line dance at PachangaArena for the February twenty fifth game.
There's a special ticket you buy thatwill get you in early, that will
have you part with a line dancingcoach. I guess there's such a thing.
I'm sure there's such a thing.I mean, there's enough country bars

(01:15:27):
in the in the world that therehave to be line dancing coaches. But
yes, you can do the bootscoot and boogie as a fan of the
Soccers. And that line dancing isfrom three to three point thirty down on
the floor and then at five ohfive Soccers and Comets. So Country Night,
Soccers will have Soccers Country hat giveaways, Cowboy hat giveaways. I've seen

(01:15:56):
them there. Like straw it's likea straw thing. It's almost like a
straw hat giveaway in the last thatis February twenty fifth, So st soccers
dot Com slash ticket specials if youwant a boot Scooting ticket stsoccers dot Com
slash ticket specials for the boot Scootand Boogie boot Scooting Chicky Riggy. These

(01:16:18):
are just fun things to say.I'm excited to see a different, you
know, different culture from my own. It's gonna be very interesting to bear
witness to this. I love itboot Scoot and Boogie. St soccers dot
Com slash ticket specials. All right, onto the preview to wrap things up.

(01:16:41):
There's not a ton to be saidabout these two games, Tony.
This is about toy Runner, bootScoot and Riggies hours combined. Just bring
them all together like wonder twins. You two can order some boot Scoot and
Riggies today. Saint Louis Ambush arein town. Saint Louis Ambush are a

(01:17:02):
lower tier team in m ASL.They're in sixth place in the East.
That's almost undoubtedly where they're going tofinish. Although good on them for beating
Baltimore and kind of getting into itin that sense. The key to know
about Saint Louis is that they donot have a developed offense. This team
is averaging four point six goals permatch. They have one ten goal scorer

(01:17:25):
in william S k They have threedouble digit point scorers in sk Lucas Almeida
and Robbie Christo. It's kind ofwhere the offense ends for Saint Louis.
This is a team that's been heldto one goal multiple times this year.
Even at home. They are winlesson the road. They're three to one

(01:17:46):
so far this year. They willbe playing a multi game road trip.
They're going to take on Empire laterin the weekend up at Toyota Arena,
and I am suspecting that Saint Louis, much like Tacoma we saw a couple
of weeks ago, they're gonna reallykind of put their emphasis on that Empire
game as one that they might havea chance to win, and then they're

(01:18:11):
gonna come into our game and youknow, try and put up a representative
effort. Soccers fans should hope forthat, because, as we heard from
Gabriel Costa earlier in our interview,a big key to getting six points and
clearing six points out of this weekendTony is to make the first three not
too much of a difficult slog.Yeah, And that's the key strategy here
is to make sure to go inand take care of business. And I

(01:18:33):
think that offensive onslaught can start earlyand really carry them into the first couple
of games and utilize whatever energy istowards the back end that's necessary. And
if you have to fight for agame that shouldn't be as tight as it
is in the second or third, you're just wasting energy in that sense,
and you can't let those games getaway from you to begin with. Right,

(01:18:56):
this is a schedule that you're gonnahave to manage regardless, and you
have been planning this and it's goingto be interesting to see how, you
know, a Philosophazio and the crewreally attack this in a tactical strategic way.
And load management is definitely something that'sbeen talked about this season for the
soccers, and not just for thesoccers, just in general. I think
I have here just the map ofwhat this looks like. Oh yeah,

(01:19:26):
I mean ouch, you know, and Dallas and Mesquite are are relatively close,
so you don't see them there. But that's the roadmap that the soccer
taken Soon it is brutal. Yeah, it's it's a long trip popping right
out of this home game. Soyou know, soccer is Saturday, Saint

(01:19:50):
Louis ambush. You know, PaloNacimiento, that's the player really you want
to talk about when you're talking aboutthe ambush, their goalkeeper. He's athletic,
he's a dynamic shot stopper. He'sa player who comes across midfield.
He'll come into the attacking zone,he'll shoot. He does have an excellent
save percentage on the season at seventwenty one. We don't get to see

(01:20:13):
Paolo that often. I was likeso freaked out when I saw it on
Goals and Boards a couple of weeksago that I like literally texted berg rude
because they put him on the spotwith a name your all time team,
like all time indoor team, andhe named Poolo is the goalkeeper. I'm
like, what Paolo like? He'sinteresting, but I've always kind of thought

(01:20:36):
of him as like good, butnot ever like in my thought for top
goalkeeper of the league, never mindever. And he told me he felt
some pressure to you know, includesome new players, some internal pressure.
No one was telling him that, like just say Victor Nagera. It's what
you mean when you say Paloma Simanta, what you mean Isgera. So just

(01:21:00):
say that. But so my pointis the guy who could make this match
tough on Saturday is Paalow. IfPaalo is dynamite, if he is on
his game, if he's on one, Saint Louis will feed off of that.
And quite frankly, we've seen thesoccers in this season play to the
level of their competition, get alittle frustrated, go into a scoring drought

(01:21:24):
for a little bit of time. They're kind of channeling the Aztecs in that
way. No scoring droughts like takecare of business, move the ball,
stay wide, stay in your lanes, make it hard for Polo to make
quick reactions saves, shifting to hisleft and right. You will have no
problem in a match like this. The soccers should run the show with Saint

(01:21:45):
Louis. Honestly, Saint Louis shouldnot score more than two goals in this
match. If they do, youknow, there's probably some tapework to be
done because then it's on too Lindbergfield in the morning. First time we're
doing this in reverse. Yes,maybe it's better in reverse, but it's
a flight up to Tacoma to takeon Nick Pereira and the Stars a Sesso

(01:22:09):
Showwear Center Sunday at five o'clock. The way the schedule rolls out, the
Stars are playing Thursday at home, hosting Empire, and then they get to
rest straight through to Sunday. Sothis is a major rest advantage for the
Tacoma Stars. This is the mostsignificant rest advantage you could have. They're

(01:22:32):
playing Thursday, so they're fresh, they're not rusty from the week. They
get the full day recovery, theyget the second day recovery, and the
Soccers are playing a home game duringtheir second day of recovery and flying the
day of the match. So honestly, I expect Sunday's match to be close,
and for the first time all year, I wouldn't be stunned to see

(01:22:58):
the Soccers lose in Tacoma. Iwould be disappointed. I would be sincerely
disappointed, because the Soccers simply shouldn'tlose to Tacoma. We've seen these teams
play enough, we know what thelevel is, we know what Tacoma thinks
about it because they sent their keyplayers away last time that the two teams

(01:23:20):
met because they knew that the nextresult against Empire was the one they could
take. However, they're gonna havethis one circle. This is the one,
like, oh, we got toplay these jerks six times, this
is the one if we're gonna beatthem one time out of six. The
one is match five Saturday or Sundayon the twenty eighth, when the soccers

(01:23:40):
are flying in the day of thematch. So I am literally expecting Pereira's
best, Juice Cox's best, ChrisToath's best, And I think the soccers
cannot afford to do what they've doneand just go you know what, Childs
is gonna chill. He's not gonnamake the trip. You know, Leo
obviously missed the last couple three games. Are they going to ask him to
play a back to back? Theyprobably aren't. They probably aren't. And

(01:24:05):
so even if Leo plays on Saturday, and you know, someone asked in
the in the I don't have anofficial injury report. All I can tell
you is I took a picture ofhim on the field today. So he
was on the field today for thesoccers. That's good news on a Tuesday.
But you know, the idea thathe would play back to back after
being hurt. You take Craig andLao out of the team. Now you're

(01:24:27):
you know, we saw what happenedlast time with a diminished Tacoma against a
diminished San Diego. It was six' five perer can by himself, you
know, put the four or fivepoints up that Tacoma needs to stay in
the match. So I'm really lookingat Saturday being a game that there's pressure
on San Diego to really execute andto have that score, you know,

(01:24:50):
six nothing at halftime, five toone, six nothing, something like that
at halftime. Come out, playa strong third quarter, play a third
qu just like it's the first quarterof a game, and then pull the
parachute. Hopefully be up seven eightgoals at that point, pull the parachute.
Put kids out there, rest theveterans, put Xavier in that.

(01:25:13):
You know, hey, wouldn't hurtfor Xavier to start Sunday's game. Would
not hurt for Xavier to start Sunday'sgame. The soccers really have to start
thinking beyond just the purity of liketwenty four games. Got to get twenty
two wins, got to get theshield, got to like got to play
every game like it's the same gameand start to take these things tactically.
They've got a veteran team. Thisis we'll see, we'll see how everything

(01:25:35):
plays out, Tony. But youknow, to me, to be able
to take all six, you haveto really take care of business with the
first three. Yeah, And Ilike that show to have X start because
again he's had already a couple oflooks and he's had meaningful contributions in that
look over there in Tacoma. Butman, Tacoma is also the team.

(01:25:58):
Just like you said that we've seenthe most, they've also seen the soccers
the most, and now they havetape on potential loopholes or its potential strategies
to take that Chihuahua took to takeit to the soccers. And look,
they've played better each and every time. Each and every time, they're closer
and closer and closer to getting avictory or getting in a position to really
put a game away or a positionto put the Sockers on their butt and

(01:26:20):
they're not going to come back. This is where you show that this is
now a different side of the Sockers. This is now a Sockers that punches
back a Soccers that is able toget back up because again, the talent
of Nick Perreira can carry that thatteam against anybody, let that be Soccers,
let that be whoever. Nick Pererais going to be a factor.
But I think that this team hasalso come together in Tacoma where they know

(01:26:44):
who they are, they know whatthey're up against, and like you said,
it's circled and this is probably oneof their biggest games because they know
if these three points are under theirbelt, it's going to very much affect
where they're going to be at theend of the regular season. Couldn't agree
more. I mean, right now, right now, I almost feel like
the standings are set, and thatsounds weird. The one thing is I'm

(01:27:11):
one hundred percent positive Chiuabo will overtakeTexas and finish second in the West.
But then I think the West isgoing to be Soccers, Savage, Texas
Tacoma, and I think I justdon't see any other way for the West.
I don't see any other way.The Strikers are not going to make
the playoffs unless there's a whole notherset of chieves ready to arrive. And

(01:27:34):
even so, even so, Iwould not be so sure that they would
make the playoffs. I mean, let's be let's be honest. Miguel Ponce
you can tell me he's played inthe league. I haven't noticed him on
the floor. I didn't even hedidn't even register against the Soccers in that

(01:27:55):
match. I'm not honestly sure howmuch he was on the floor. Like
it's that bad, Like I noidea when it comes to Ponte Fabian scores
on power plays scores on six.Attacker does not defend at all, but
is an offensive weapon in the league. There's no doubt about that. Pontse
no clue, No clue. SoSaturday Home seven pm, Sunday Road five

(01:28:20):
pm, no official watch party.I am here to tell you that the
end of this road trip will seethe Soccer's first official watch party. That
will be the Friday, February ninth, six pm showdown at Cornersport Arena between
the Soccers and the Chihuahwu Savage, and it will be at the Califno Tasting

(01:28:43):
Room, the Califno Lounge up inCarlsbad, adjacent to the Soccers offices.
And not for nothing, Tony andI are likely to be doing an English
language broadcast of the match from thesame place. Yeah, Susan asking English
call it calif that that's the plan. That is the plan. How we're
going to execute it. I'm notsure. We might be up in Yeah,

(01:29:10):
we might. We probably won't beon the floor like we normally are,
Tony. We might be up inthe up in the conference room,
or we might be in the nextroom. I don't know where the hell
we're going to be. We're gonnabe somewhere, but we're gonna be doing
it. So that's the end ofthis road trip. The road trip starts
Sunday in Tacoma, continues Thursday andSaturday next week in Texas with the Texas

(01:29:32):
Two Step. Every year we havea Texas two Step, and the Texas
two Step is next week with thesoccers first being at Texas against the Outlaws
on Thursday, February first, andthen on Saturday, February third, they
will be in Dallas where they alwayswin by one, like it just every
time they go there. It's sixsix or seven to seven in the fourth

(01:29:55):
quarter and the soccers, you know, push their food around the plate for
fifty five minutes and they go,oh, we got to win the game.
We got to eat now and thenthey win and they eat some nervous
times ahead. Honestly, this isa defining stretch of the season here,
Tony, I mean Saturday's game.I know. I saw Eddie say the

(01:30:16):
soccers have never beaten the Ambush inNASL history. Yeah, that was like
in twenty fourteen or whatever. LikeI remember being on a trip in twenty
thirteen fourteen when we went to SaintLouis and lost, and then Nick Pereira
and Phil got in a fight atthe restaurant after not like a physical fight,
but you know, like yelled ateach other in the restaurant later.

(01:30:40):
I'm not worried about that. Ithink that I think you can take that
stat and flush it sometime around ninepoint thirty on Saturday evening. I think
that that stat will be done. But at Tacoma, at Texas, at
Dallas, at Chihuahua, get alltwelve points to the West champion. Lock
it up, get all twelve points, you're the West Champion. Everyone else

(01:31:02):
can snooze and cruise, and wewill do what we've kind of done since
day one, which has put ourminds on autopilot till the semifinal, and
say that's when it's real. Youdon't you get six out of twelve points,
You're still in pretty decent shape. You're still in pretty decent shape.

(01:31:24):
But you have given probably Texas hope. And if you lose, if you
go down and lose in Chihuahua, soccers can't be any better than third in
the power rankings the rest of theseason. So you gotta go down and
show that you've got a game toplay against Chihuahua at the end of this

(01:31:45):
road trip. This is stuff fromnext week's show. We're moving ahead to
next week's show right now. Let'stake let's take care of business this weekend,
get six points out of this weekend, and chop this trip in half,
and then you know you've got someor bite sized chunks next week down
in Texas. Tony, Yeah,I agree with that. Take care of
business. That's gonna be the monikerfor the rest of the season. It's

(01:32:08):
just do what the soccers know howto do. Do the philosophy, do
the soccer, do the shields,do the arena, do the fans,
do yourself the service of really representingthis team as it deserves to be,
and go all out. And Ithink the players are in that mindset now
and just a matter of putting itinto action, and yeah, you're gonna
run into hiccups. You're gonna runinto situations that are difficult. You're gonna

(01:32:30):
run into potential referee calls, potentialclock mismanagement in the arena or whatever shenanigans
are gonna happen. But regardless, you still have to persevere through all of
that and really cement yourself as thebest team potentially that you can be in
the league because again, tough competitionwith Monterey and Chiwawa coming up. It's

(01:32:54):
an interesting league. We're in themiddle of it. It's always fun tom
aisl, but this you're very, very interesting the way everything is shaken out.
